"Messy" Burger : Don't You Agree They Are The Best??
Messy but Delicious Luncheon Meat and Egg Burger

first of all, let me apologize for this somehow unsighty and surely-failed-under-the-foodie-blogger-standard photo above.. i was actually sitting in front of my laptop gulping this luncheon meat with egg burger, and since i do not have anything in mind to blog for today, and since this burger comes in handy, and since i was holding my phone, i snapped a photo of this "messy" burger.. be instant and be impromptu, we have today roadside burgers versus fast food burgers!!

okay you can actually skip the previous paragraph and start reading from the next sentence, muahahaha!! so, tell me.. if you are one who actually eat fast food or even down-to-earth roadside food, which one do you actually prefer??
  • fast food chain burgers prepared by "trained" kitchen crew who work like robots, packed with corporate standard numbers of (and countable) toppings, fixed amount of dressing (but not more than two types), in a mass production environment, charged additionally for air-cond and franchise royalty (and not-working-free-wifi) and size getting significantly smaller..
  • roadside stall burgers prepared by an anonymous who works like a michelin-star-chef-wannabe, stacked with random numbers of (and uncountable) toppings, arbitrary amount of dressing (always more than three and all the time oozing out), in a made-to-order environment, charged accordingly by your order (but not on additional requests) and size getting fairly smaller..

    1. Aiya......miss clicked the "publish" button!! =.=!! Anyway if choose one I eat the most one is the fast food chain one coz the roadside one usually is like when you go mamak or pasar malam then only get chances to buy, but the fast food chain one is mostly inside shopping mall, sometimes alone feel like to eat something, if one person go in to the restaurant to eat is very weird mah!! So only can choose fast food, because even you eat alone also no one care, no one keep on staring at you! If those usual restaurant, sure got people keep on starring at me and gimme that impression "why this person so weird one, eating alone!" =.=!! Actually I want to say is that illegal to eat alone ya???

    2. But if come to taste I think the roadside one is better (so difficult for me to recall back what I had last time) coz the chain one all the taste all slightly the same just depends on which ingredient you're asking for only! But the roadside the taste of the burger of this stall is different from the other one!

      Delete
    3. true also lah, many times it all depends on the mood and also the crave to decide which type of burger we want to eat.. because the roadside burgers don't have SOP and corporate standard, but depends on the owner, of so one is different from the other.. :)

      Delete
    4. But honestly hor, I found those roadside are almost the same also the taste, no big difference, guess burger is very hard for them to make it taste less, right?

      Delete
    5. hahaha, you are right lah.. if you can make the burger to taste awful then you are really an awful cook lor~~ :D

  2. Taste wise of course I would prefer those roadside Ramli Burger. Actually my favorite in Penang is called Papa Burger (near where I stay) LOL! But I have McD more frequently, not because I like their burgers or wifi, but because they have big TV screen to catch live football hahaha!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. same same.. and for me too, i would have McD more than Ramly, because McD seems to be more accessible than roadside stalls.. the opening hours, the location, weather and also comfort all play important factors to the choice agree??

  3. Ooohhh, so today is about burger ahh? Ok wor, burger post, I like.. I know what to comment ma, hehe.. Eh, first thing when I see your picture ahh, I thought it’s those “yok kon min pao”, neh inside got “yok kon”, egg (upon request), cucumber, “yok si” (floss), cili sauce and mayo.. Those type ahh.. But you said luncheon meat.. Means “mm chan yok”? So you home-made this yourself or buy from stall sin? If luncheon meat then I think sendiri make and bring to work wor..

    1. Ok, now to answer your question.. I like both.. Air conditioned burger place, I like, coz like you said, comfortable ma.. Can eat slowly, “tiap” the fries and slowly sip the drink, then sometimes, the drinks are refillable one.. Can drive thru somemore.. Got free cute stuff somemore, toys and all.. So leh, yeah, sometimes go to air conditioned franchise burger place also I like..

      Delete
    2. Roadside stall also I like wor.. Sometimes, ad-hoc, suddenly teringin wana eat burger while on the way back to house, then see roadside stall burger, wah, will automatically “lao hau sui” one.. Think of the daging special with coleslaw also very nice already.. So both also I like..

      Delete
    3. If can, I would love to make at home la.. Buy the burger patties from the frozen dept, then sendiri make lor.. Can put as much liew as we wish, like cheese, egg or baked beans.. But hor, I don’t like the thawing part only.. If suddenly wana eat, then take out from freezer, have to wait how long wor, rite.. No mood already..

      Delete
    4. Talking about frozen stuff, I have some frozen nuggets and fish fingers in the freezer.. A bit potong stim one when cooking those.. You have to plan in advance.. Then you take out how much you wana eat and thaw.. If you suddenly feel like eating, hou sien, coz it’s frozen, how to fry and eat immediately? But frozen sausages and meatballs I’m ok, coz if I wana eat, I just boil a saucepan of water, dump in the sausages and balls, boil for a few minutes, then can eat liao.. But frozen nuggets, takkan I boil it meh, hor..

      Delete
    5. Ooops, sorry ahh, talk talk har, go to Holland liao.. Happy Friday, ok bye..

      Delete
    6. Eh, I thought those frozen nuggets and fish fillet can straight away fry in hot oil? I never tried lah but I have baked it in the oven straight from freezer.

      Delete
    7. yes, actually i bought from the "yok gon mien bao" stall lah, they also have this luncheon meat egg "mm chan yok dan".. i find this nice so i bought this instead of the "yok gon" lor.. of course all also can make at home lah, very simple only lah.. but then i lazy lor, hahaha!! :D

  4. Good morning burgers & blog lovers! I love to eat burgers very much and look at my size that speaks for all. Look at Thambee's size that also speaks louder. Thanks to the burgers that is most appetizing for any meals. I prefer the road side burgers but often avoided them due to the worries about the car and vehicles pollutions.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The road side burgers are often bigger and messier sometimes until everything inside would drop off due to the chef seller's angin to stuff too much fillings. However they have regular die hard fans who would queue up each night around my area. When I saw families waiting for 5-10 burgers, I would swoon away.

      Delete
    2. There is one popular burger stall here which is specialized for its POWER BURGERS! When I saw its size, I thought it should be shared by 3 persons. Their style Macam the Subway Long sandwich packed to the maximum but Power Bugers are high like clock towers.

      Delete
    3. Long ago, a colleague taught me how to judge if the burger seller is good chef. If you see him always playing his guitar and singing with friends, forget it!! His burgers must be lousy, no business until he has too much free time to play guitar instead of frying the meat patties! LOL

      Delete
    4. yeah, i eat too much burgers until this size already, how bad!! hahahaha.. err, not only roadside burgers but anywhere if i see people queuing up, i will swoon away.. and for sure?? the seller playing his guitar may not make good burgers?? hmm, but i don't think so, i will think they make good burgers because they are the hippie style who are not into real business, and would probably give more passion in making the burgers for you.. :p

  5. When it comes to food, real life food that's taste good, looks don't really matter to me. As long as it is hygienically prepared, that's good enough for me. Some food may look good but taste wise, it is nothing to shout about.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. you are right but i think the look somehow plays an important role.. unless you already know how the food tastes and expected it to look like this, else i guess it won't be too inviting for you to try for the first time?? haha..

  6. But if course if I am dining at a restaurant that charges steep prices, of course I would expect both taste and presentation to be good.

    ReplyDelete

    1. yeah.. very much agreed!! the price and ambiance of the restaurant actually sets me an expectation on the food..

  7. Coming back to the main topic of fast food chain burgers vs roadside stall burgers, for me the roadside stall burgers wins hands down. It actually tastes a lot better don't you agree?

    ReplyDelete

    1. yeah.. it actually feels more satisfying having the roadside Ramly burger huh?? hehehe :p

  8. Come to think of it, any burger will look messy once you start biting into it! I have not had luncheon meat with egg burger before. I think this one I can make at home. The wrapper looks convenient too, just a normal clear plastic bag. Very practical. By the way how much was that burger?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. haha, i guess nowadays fast food chain burgers are slowly becoming like the "messy" burger, don't you think?? the burger is RM3.20 for one, from those bakwa bread stalls.. comes with luncheon meat, egg, cucumber, and of course lots of chili sauce :D

      Delete
  9. What I like about the roadside burgers is that you can request to tailor made the toppings (like more onions) or sauces (bagi sos cili lebih sikit) and most of the time the guy will accommodate your request.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh yeah, i definitely raise both hands to agree.. it's like when we go to fast food chain, we just get whatever given.. but when we go for roadside burger, we tend to request for customizations.. :)

      Delete
  10. Besides, the roadside stall burgers are made to order and not like certain fast food chains that prepare a few in advance.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah, that's the distinctive difference.. but i think nowadays fast food chains are slowly adapting the just-in-time policy huh?? they prepared the stuffs but only assemble the burger when orders come in..

      Delete
  11. But of course lah, fast food chain burgers you can eat there in a comfortable air-conditioned environment. After makan, just walk off, no need to clean up. At the roadside stall burgers, we will tapau and bring home to eat. Maybe by the time go home, the burger could be soggy from the cucumbers and lettuce being exposed to heat for too long. It is not so convenient to eat by the roadside or in the car. Some people very pantang about eating in the car because if food or drinks spill, alamak!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. maybe that's why when the roadside burger reaches home, it becomes soggy and hence more messy?? anyway, usually when i buy, i would probably go somewhere nearby and then i will already finish eating the burger after a short walk :D

      Delete
  12. But the disadvantage is that the roadside stall burgers mostly operate in the evening right? So far those that I know operate evening time lah.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i've seen many that are open throughout the day till night.. but usually i only feel like eating roadside burgers at night :D

      Delete
  13. Price wise of course the roadside stall burgers are more affordable compared to the fast food chain burgers. Usually the fast food chain burgers will bundle in drinks and fries for a better deal but I only want the burger. That way I prefer the road side stall burgers for the no frills deal.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. that is why i usually go for fast food chains for the bundle as meal, but roadside burgers just as snacks.. hahaha!! :D

      Delete
  14. I love the roadside burgers but my biggest complaint is the wait time especially if you're hungry. They only make a few burgers at a time, and they take long too! So if there's a queue, hello gastric!

Then, now the roadside burger, never Yannie went and bought any so far. My Jin Jin would buy roadside burger to eat as supper or after his badminton games.

    2. I remember, 11 years ago. I was in hospital delivering April, my first child. I had labour pain for more than 15 hours. Jin Jin was in hospital with me. After the labour was over, it was about 1am in the morning. Jin Jin left hospital and went back home happily after witnessing his first princess was born safely.

I asked him when I saw him again, "What was the first thing you do when you reached home?" His answer was, " I bought roadside burger and I ate and then I went to bed with a smile on my lips."

Until now, I am not too sure, the smile on his lips was because of being a new dad or having the roadside burger. Tsk...tsk...

  18. That's tough ! It really depends on the folks who are preparing it. Both can be very tasty if the burgers are well prepared. The established ones do have a nice formula for its burger but if the crew didn't follow it religiously and passionately ,then the standard definitely deviate from its intended quality.
As for the roadside ones , again it boils down on how good the cook is. I do tried very nice burger by he roadside and some even have long queues. Of course , there are also those which cannot make it.

  24. I agree with ChrisAu's comment that SK likes. I will break it down further to taste and price. For the price, of course I prefer road side stall burgers that are tasty and I have eaten some pretty good ones from road side stalls before but that was a long time ago. Nowadays I seldom eat burgers and only recently ate burgers again because they are gourmet burgers just to see what the hype is all about but do I prefer the gourmet burgers over roadside stall burgers? The answer is no because again of the price factor. Gourmet burgers are really expensive but if you are referring to burgers from chains such as McD, then yes I prefer McD to roadside stall burgers because I know what I will be getting from McD, no surprises there whereas roadside stall burgers, if I have not read a review about them, it would be a hit and miss.

But nowadays there are gourmet burgers being sold in food trucks but I have not eaten any so I don't know how they taste like. Would you classify food truck burgers as roadside stall burgers too?

    ReplyDelete

    1. burgers are one thing very common to me.. and i guess i actually have burgers more in the fast food chain, because i only treat the roadside ones as snacks!! furthermore, while spending more time in malls, its' more reasonable to go to the air-conditioned fast food chain for a meal that comes with drinks and fries.. gourmet burgers in restaurant, hmmm, how long have i not been to one?? :p

  26. Hmm, I agree the burger doesn't look presentable in the photo, so I accept your apology :p Haha just kidding la! But the 'liu' looks good, overall the burger still look yummy to me.

Which one I prefer? Actually no preference. I like burgers, so it doesn't matter which one, especially when I am craving for burgers, I will just wallop whatever burgers.

Speaking of burger, I just had filet o fish this afternoon, brought Aden to McD to main main, so 顺便 eat the burger, hehe. We shared a regular size of french fries (opps), I know we just recovered from colds shouldn't eat fry stuff but cannot resist la, hehe... But we drink lots of water after that.
Whenever I go McD, I will usually order filet o fish, not too fancy of chicken burger, beef one lagi lah never order.

Anyway, I love to other types of burgers, I mean besides McD one, too bad Taiping choices are limited. I miss burgers from Burger King, even the charcoal burgers, as well as Subway sandwiches (although it's not the real 'burger' la if you know what I mean).

You mentioned roadside stall burgers, those like Ramli burgers right? Those are very good too! Usually the hawker is very generous in terms of the sauces... So very worth ordering such burger. And they have lots of choices too, ayam special, hotdog, oblong, some with cheese and so on... Yummy!
But they make one by one so the cons is have to wait patiently la, hehe!

  28. The two question ah. A bit susah to answer for me. Coz it depends on my mood.

Sometimes just don't feel like wanna think much. Just go fast food restaurant and point to one picture and order that. Yeah most times the burger comes out much different from the pic but hentam la. Otak just freeze up and refused to jalan.

And one thing is that the fast Food restaurant punya comes with fries and drinks. I can share with J lo coz he likes fries.

Nowadays...each week will have at least once fast food Coz daily tapau from shops till jelak liao. Just drive to nearest McD and ask J which burger he wants. Not bad la. RM6 get a burger , fries and drink. Unhealthy but ...well you know la

    1. yalah, actually quite difficult to answer also because it all depends on the mood what you feel like eating that time huh?? but then of course fast food one more convenient lah, cos of the location and also more comfortable place to dine in..

    2. Normally tapau only lor.

Yes more predictable coz already know where got the McD, KFC Burger King etc. Whereas roadside stall not open daily. sometimes drive all the way there...aiyak...boss cuti...kantoi

  29. With fast food burger I can at least estimate the size and the quality and taste of the burger . Unlike those from roadside ones.

Guess would be great for those who are not very adventurous eater. And they do have certain standard of cleanliness. Each month they will close one day and clean up the place and do pest control will not discuss how effective is that la but at least I know they have a certain standard lor. Now worry will lausai if after eating those burgers

  30. As for roadside messy burger . They have their positive sides too.

Apart from more topping and done to order type of topping like your have mentioned, they also offer more variety.

Have special burger, burger ayam, burger daging and the more exotic type burger ostrich burger rabbit burger kambing and what not.

That would be a nice change from the generic ones that are found in fast food restaurant

    5. oh yes.. wet-wet and not as dry as those we get in fast food chain.. and surely Twilight Man loves all the oozing and dripping juice that he will lick and suck them clean~~ :D

But if you happen to find a good one...must really bookmark it. There was one good one near our pld place. Price also RM2-Rm3. very cheap lo.

  34. Hello SK! I am afraid I dont have much to say about burgers here.. never like fast chain food here in Ipoh nor those road side burgers.. in the first place, I am not a burger lover.. I see one, I feel very full already! That is why I think I cannot survive in a western country where only burgers are mainly sold.. hahaha..
Oh by the way, cannot start spamming yet... still got to wait till next month.. please wait for me!! hahahaa..
