Hokkaidō Trip Summer 2014 - DAY 4B of 8
Garden Hopping in Colorful Furano (富良野)
中文讀者請注意: 因為篇幅問題, 這一系列日本遊記只有英語版本, 敬請見諒..
after enjoying a rather serene morning in the (still) quiet Heiwa Dori shopping park (平和通買物公園 Heiwa-Dori Kaimono-Kōen) and the beautiful Tokiwa Park (常磐公園 Tokiwa Kōen), we proceeded to one of the highlights of this trip - visiting flower fields in Furano (富良野)!! thank god, it was such nice weather on day 4 itself, else we would have to miss this if it continued to rain like the day before :)

Furano Japan - On the road to flower fields
#4B-F1 ■ ■
our friend was so kind to take his afternoon off on this monday and drove us all the way from Asahikawa (旭川) to Furano (富良野) for the flower fields.. hence, i don't have much useful information about how to get there.. the tourist information counter in Asahikawa Station (旭川駅 Asahikawa Eki) and most hotels would be able to advice on the transportation, but since many flower fields are not served by public transport, it would be wiser to go for a local tour or better still to rent a car and drive to travel on your own pace.. Furano Japan - Breathtaking views on the road
#4B-F2 ■ ■
it was about an hour's drive (okay, not just 32km if you spotted that in the previous photo, it was taken half way through the journey) but i did not actually feel it taking that long.. the scenery along the road to Furano (富良野) was so picturesque capturing the landscapes of farms and fields, probably gazing out of the window at such scenic views has made me forgotten about time passing away..

during summer, many different species of flowers bloom in the many flower fields along the route from Biei (美瑛) to Furano (富良野), hence the most popular activity in this area would be "garden-hopping".. our first stop was this not-so-tourists-packed like-so-cincai-by-the-roadside-only Kanno Farm (かんのファーム Kanno Fāmu) in Kami-Furano (上富良野 - literally Upper Furano) which already got us so excited!! all i want to say is, breathtaking!!

#4B-F4 ■ ■
... and when i said excited, guess how excited i was?? jumping-high-up kind of excitement that was!! muahahahaha.. okay, so this one looks way more cool than my signature pose huh?? what do you think?? :p
Furano Japan - Farm Tomita Parking
#4B-F5 ■ ■
it was kind of a "garden-hopping" excursion, remember?? so after a brief stay at Kanno Farm (かんのファーム Kanno Fāmu), we continued to the next field.. the Farm Tomita (ファーム富田 Fāmu Tomita) in Naka-Furano (下富良野 - literally Lower Furano) which is, to a higher degree, more established and tourist centered.. this photo was taken at the carpark (parked with lots of cars and tourist buses) looking at the Furano Valley at the far end.. our Japanese friend told me, he comes to this place every year and this was his 4th time..

#4B-F6 ■ ■
colorful fields of flowers and large pieces of lavender fields were found in this Farm Tomita (ファーム富田 Fāmu Tomita).. the excitement was not as intense as we were in Kanno Farm (かんのファーム Kanno Fāmu), first because this was no longer the very "virgin experience" (muahahaha!!), second because this place was very crowded with tourists.. anyway, it was still a very beautiful place i would like to stay to admire the flowers, and also to keep on breathing the very soothing scent of fresh lavenders..
[side note] the scent of fresh lavenders is mild yet soothing, not the strong smell those heavily processed essence/ fragrance/ deodorant/ by-products etc you thought that can make you feel dizzy.. :)
Furano Japan - Tomita Melon HouseFurano Japan - Tomita Melon HouseFurano Japan - Tomita Melon House and the MelonFurano Japan - Tomita Melon House and the Melon
#4B-F7 ■ ■
inside Farm Tomita (ファーム富田 Fāmu Tomita), there is this Tomita Melon House (とみたメロンハウス Tomita Meron Hausu) which is a shop selling all kinds of refreshments in everything melon.. melon is considered as one of the "posh" fruits in Japan and amongst them, the orange-flesh Yubari melon (夕張メロン Yūbari Meron) is the most expensive and coveted breed, like Musang King of durians (???).. so, how could we miss that??!! of course we could not afford one whole Yubari melon each (can be thousands of yens), but two sharing one slice of Furano melon (¥300!!!) just to taste would do also lah.. how did it taste you wonder?? so fragrant and tender and juicy and sweet that i rolled my eyes having it in my mouth!! another favorite of this trip, it's HEAVENLY HEAVEN!!!
Furano Japan - Lavender and Melon Ice Cream
#4B-F8 ■ ■
"trapped" in a lavender farm we were, we bought some (expensive commercial) souvenirs made of lavenders and saw also refreshments made of lavenders!! just had our melons, we cared for nothing but went ahead to get each an ice-cream (¥300), recommended by our Japanese friend who claimed it as the best in Hokkaido.. we had melon (orange color in front) and lavender (violet color at the back), true enough, so silky smooth and lavishly creamy, both very delectable but i personally prefer the melon one more.. okay, yet another favorite of this trip, but don't go and see the giant ones on the left lah basket, kids also know they are fake!! :D
Furano Japan - Farm Tomita
#4B-F9 ■ ■
Furano (富良野) has the similar climate as Provence in Southern France, hence the lavender as well as cheese and wine.. of course we didn't manage to get to the cheese and wine factory due to the shortage of time (and also paiseh to ask our friend to drive further), but i definitely was extremely happy and felt grateful.. look at how sweet i smiled reflecting my feelings, though i was already sunburnt under the bright sun by then, muahahaha!! :D
so that was our "garden-hopping" in Furano (富良野), capturing tons and tons of beautiful images of flowers into our cameras and phones, and of course memories.. certainly not to be missed by nature or flower lovers, being neither one of those but i frankly say, i was pretty amazed by the timeless beauty of nature.. next, still on the same day 4 (yeah, i know you just said "huh?? still got ah??") and continued to be amazed by the nature on the way back to Asahikawa (旭川) for dinner, stay tuned!! :)

My leaves are very precious one.. Usually for the kids and emergency, if they are sick or unwell.. I don’t even have time for myself.. If I wana go do my hair or go shopping, I have to apply sick leave jor.. Shhhhh..

    2. Eh, nice wor the scenery along the road to Furano.. Like postcard leh.. it’s really nice.. I would have set it as desktop background in the office pc jor.. Then everyday look at it, barulah semangat..

    3. OMG, I clicked on the numbers.. Is that lavender in the 2nd picture? I’m not a fan of lavender, never liked them becoz of the smell, very geli, BUT in your picture, wow, they look so nice and peaceful leh.. I could imagine myself standing there smelling them (altho’ I hate them).. But it’s so so nice.

And flower #3 looks like postcard too.. I like..

Both my boys love Baby Eisntein, and really, this Farm Tomita entrance really looks like something from one of those baby Einstein scenes..

    6. Ooohhh, look at that orange melon ice cream! Can I lick some ahh? Can only imagine now I guess..

Errr, no thank you to the lavender ice cream, but well, my motto is: Already come here, sure must try, cannot everything say don’t want..

    7. Ok, I might lick some of that lavender ice cream too..

    8. The smell of lavender makes me dizzy.

      Delete
    9. geli on lavender?

Fresh lavender scent is very mild and soothing. not like those car air freshner type punya. Those car air freshner type already campur with a lot of chemical. smell already will pening.

hahaha bet Sk purposely wear colorful to make a striking balance between the flowers.

      Delete
    10. It is so strange that I hear people feels dizzy with lavender scents. Like Small Kucing said, some were not pure ones so the smell could make me pengsan too. I buy the pure essential oils of lavender from US online and it relieves headaches & migraines instantly when rubbed on forehead. I love it.

      Delete
    11. I also used Lavender essential oil before, which they mixed with something else. It's soothing and relaxing. I tired the lavender shower foam also but the smell goes away as fast as my fart, after the shower.

    12. Good afternoon Princess Ribbon,

Ate your lunch already? Yes, I agree his Japanese friend is very nice to take him and his friends around as annual leaves are very precious to people with their own family.

Must try, must try the lavender ice cream. I have tried sakura ice cream made from the sakura flowers before so die die must try lavender ice cream. I think the lavender taste should be very very mild and not those artificial lavender flavouring.

      Delete
    13. Chris, when at lavender fields, please control the gas. LOL!

      Delete
    14. Phong - sure sure ...thought I add more smell to make it better.

      Delete
    15. LOL...what la you Chris...fart and lavender..ho ho siew.

Yea some "chemical" type of lavender scent does makes me dizzy. but if pure ones ok.

Think same goes for all types of perfume.

    16. errr, i never said i am going to finish within this month at all, all i said is that i will be blogging about it the whole August only.. still can continue into September one mah, right?? no need to countdown how many days left for the month lah..

aiyoh, definitely different not those strong smell you all were thinking lah.. maybe you phobia with those smell from heavily processed lavender added with lots of chemicals and additives lah.. but the fresh scent i was smelling in the lavender farm, was so mild and refreshing and soothing and relaxing lah.. if the scent can make people dizzy, i think the place won't be so packed leh~~ :p

  3. Alright! A much anticipated post on flower fields! I can see from the windscreen that the weather was good with very clear skies. Alas this attraction is not near train stations and understandable so. One hour's drive is not that bad. I am not a good car traveller. I get car sick but it is certainly different in Japan where it is not so hot. Besides, the excitement is enough to "drug" me and I think I would be OK even if it is more than one hour. Love the greenery. The road to Furano is like travelling along a picture book!

    1. yeah, thank god weather was good and sunny that day, else we would have to leave without seeing the flowers.. lucky!! and the hour drive journey didn't actually seem to be an hour, because i was gazing out of the window all the time.. even the countryside looked so beautiful..

  5. Kanno Farm is like paradise to me. Gosh, I love all those flowers. I would be clicking and clicking my camera away. Oh, you look like a ballet dancer leaping into the air. That is the effect from all those gorgeous blooms eh? Yes, I like this pose. Very graceful and like I said, very much like a ballet dancer!

    1. haha, ballet dancer?? that is rather a funny description on me, i've never been imagining myself as a ballet dancer, muahahahaha!! i thot i jumped quite clumsily~~

  6. This Farm Tomita is equally beautiful with all those blooms in particular the lavenders. But when a place is too touristy, it kind of spoils it a bit right? But as long as it is not over crowded, it should still be alright. The scent of Lavender is supposed to be therapeutic and soothing. But quite honestly it makes me pening heh..heh...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. it was quite okay because the place was large but kind of pissed off when some inconsiderate tourists just took up the space, hanging on the same spot for so long and didn't want to let others go take photo.. hmmm, depending on what kind of lavender you are smelling?? :p

  7. Ah, I like this Melon House! I love melons and how I wish I could taste the Yubari Melon. The honeydews or rock melons that are available over here are sometimes not sweet at all. It has very bland taste sometimes. Can't say that I have tasted one that would make me go wow!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh yeah, those melons are so nice to see and even nicer to eat!! how i am actually missing it already.. ours one are not this type, what they have are the cantaloupe while we have honeydew or rock melon here, i think it's a crossbreed between these two..

    3. betul wor...can spend whole day there...but if spend whole day there will be torture also cause can see but cannot bring home all those lovely flowers. Plant here very hard to grow coz of the weather.

yes, some people does have allergy. Happy the SK and friends doesn;t have them else they wouldn;t have gone and see...or maybe they will still go. just take allergy med. .

    4. RM13 one biji of melon, that one i think nor special at all, just the price of our normal honeydew or rockmelon only woh.. those Japan mali punya, if not RM130 a biji also at least around RM100 leh, no play play one..

that's why, it's cheaper there and have no reason to not try them!! OMG, i am starting to miss that already..

Lavender is nice, I love the scent of Lavender, always, I love the purple colour of Lavender too. Your ice-cream looks very creamy and yummy.

  42. Good afternoon SK,

Of course this jumping pose is more superior to the running pose. The photographer is very keng to capture you in action in mid air some more. So from now on, it will only be jumping pose, no more running pose?

Or the jumping pose is inspired by the lavenders. So no flowers no jumping pose?

The melon, should have one slice per person since it is only 300yen (RM10 only). Here one Japanese melon is so so so so expensive so I guess it should be slightly cheaper in Japan than here.

At a glance, I thought the ice creams in both photos are real. Thank goodness you say that the ones on the left are not real. How does lavender ice cream taste like?

We must have lived in Japan in our past lives that's why we never get enough of it. Must go again and again! I suspect Thambee was a flower boy in Furana! Look at your happy face when found the flowers again! DejaVue! I hope to be able to visit those hills and hills of flower farms in Japan. So awesome la!!

    1. #4-F1: What a good blessings that you guys had a kind friend to chauffeur you all to visit the farms! I understand about this remote areas where public transport is Zero! We need to hire a guide or rent cars but not easy la. Anay might end up inside the volcano instead! Muahahaha...

    2. #4-F2: I love all your green, green, grass of home photos! They look like beautiful post cards with your arrangement like that. The picturesque shots with little houses dotting on the greens looked so peaceful and tranquil. Good place for meditation and lead a Zen lifestyle. My regret is that I could not snap them like you in Japan as the bullet train was running too fast! My camera phone was like half asleep and could not capture. Now my wife's new Mini-DSLR can take the fastest moving object to become still. Hmmmm...can't wait to use this gadget.

      Delete
    3. #4-F3: The colours look like rainbows growing on the fields of flowers! Anay is in love with the bunga-bunga cantek now! It would be lovely if Anay could bring Letchumy to go garden hopping like Thambee & Kamala! What a pity we don't have such fields in Malaysia which is not impossible to plant since we have same season all year round! Look at their yellow and orange flowers! They are Pom-Pom flowers which are easily grown in our climate too. The Lavender is so nice in purples but I think this plant needs cooler climates like Japan to survive.

    4. #4-F4: This photo is SUPERB! I didn't know Thambee can jump so HAIII!!! I mean so high! Wakakaka I thought you said you are fatty but my Thambee really jumped like a frog! I think you looked so slim now that's why you could leap or spring up so perfectly with such a colourful backdrop! Did your yellow pants rip apart after that? Muahahahaha Naughty Anay! Just kidding la, don't angry. Next time I must start jumping your signature poses too!

    5. #4-F5: Your Japanese friend visited that place every year and that was his 4th attempt. He is probably from another town or he just lived there since 4 years ago. If I were him, I would move and live inside the flower farm. Drink flower Tea and smell flowers daily! So heavenly.

      Delete
    6. #4-F6: I believe the Lavender scents have good beneficial values for our health. The smell could calm and pacify one's soul hence the hyper tensions would be gone. I observed the photos and realised the farmers are very smart to plant different colours to make the fields attractive until it becomes an annual tourists attractions!

      Delete
    7. #4-F7: I like the name of Tomita Melon House. It sounds so cartoon and fun. I have seen this fruit during Japanese Food Fairs at ISETAN but didn't observe its price. I know the Japanese are fond of melons and our Red Watermelons are their top favourites too. Maybe this one is prized melons for its taste and texture. Your closed up shots reminds me of the Cantaloupe Fruit which is very popular in US. So similar.

      Delete
    8. #4-F8: OMG! Look at that ice creamssss! Yummilicious! Anay would eat 10 ice cream cones at one sitting until go bankrupt! 300 Yen per cone is like a Haagen Dazzz price here.. The colour is so rich until looked like fake plastics! How nice itf they could export them to Malaysia and sell them at vending machines! I would drown inside or put my mouth at the ice cream taps!

      Delete
    9. #4-F9: Look at my smiling Thambee! You looked so happy like kena lottery or something! Sure your poses looked gaya and handsome! If David Beckham saw this, he might scream to see his replica! Wakakaka... Arigato Gozaimasu for sharing all the lovely photos!!!

of course i was very happy, indeed just looking at the beautiful and colorful flowers, one can easily get high spirited.. and you are right, they are so smart to manage the farm to attract tourists, afterall this place wouldn't be packed with people during the colder season where flowers won't grow.. what's more, having tried the very nice melon and also ice-cream, what can an afternoon be nicer than this??

When the right time is here, everyone please jump like SK in picture #4B-F4 to show off马甲线, but please forget about showing the blooming black lavenders. Deal?
