The Chronicles of My Mobile Phones
i only started to own a mobile phone in year 2000, i am pretty sure i was the last to (finally) have one amongst friends and colleagues.. i consider myself quite a moderate mobile phone user because throughout these years, i have had only 6 phones all together, which means i ditched an old phone for a new one every 2.5 years on average.. look at the chronicles of my mobile phones, i actually spent some time searching for the pictures especially the antique ones, haha!! how about you?? when did you first own your mobile phone, what model was it?? and what is the phone you are using now after how many changes?? :)

  1. Good Morning Everyone. Ring! Ring! Riiinnnggg!!! Rrrrriiiinggggg!!
Oh today is about the very interesting mobile phones!!
You made me crack my head on the year I owned the mobile phone but I remember that it was like the year 1995 because my HKG boss was so kiasu and forced me to get one. I think my first brand was Motorola as those earlier years we had few brands only in the market like Motorola, NEC, Siemens and dunno what else.

      Wakakakaka

    2. Oh all the brands I have used, I rank Samsung the best and actually owned 3 models of that brand.
All in all I had Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung X 3, HTC, Siemens and several forgotten brands. The worst I had was HTC which was the most crazy phone but was a gift from a friend. This phone whould shut down and restart by itself while I was talking with someone. It happened like every 2 days after 1 year's use. I thought I was alone but the seller told me it happened to everyone!!! Geeeezzz!

  2. I clearly remember when I was in US during my student days, my Japanese friend told me that someday the humans could invent the telephone that we could carry about just like a walkie talkie! I laughed and told him to finish his beer & stop talking rubbish. Both of us were stoned drunk with many cans of Budweiser.

I asked him how it was possible to talk without wires? He told me to think about how the walkie talkies worked. Oh well, this guy I have blogged about him before as the only one I know who has OBE!!! If you dunno what is OBE, kindly read this post......>>>> http://twilightzone518.blogspot.com/2013/11/out-of-body-experience-anyone.html

    1. My first phone when I was 18 was the Siemens phone – with antenna that one.. I forgot the model la, sendiri go imagine la.. Got antenna one, grey colour.. Dad bought it for me so that parents could reach me easily, like asking me what time I come back, where am I, etc.. BUT, got condition one.. Upon reaching home, the handphone MUST put downstairs inside the kitchen before I go upstairs to do my college work, etc.. Like prisoner only.. Parents made me do that coz scared I curi-curi sms/call friends/boys wor, pfffttt…

      Delete
    2. Second phone was Nokia 6610, forst polytone handphone.. That time my bf curi-curi buy for me one.. Parents didn’t know about it for a few months.. When they finally found out, I just said bought from my own money, yada yada..

      Delete
    3. Third phone, I think the SE walkman.. When I was working.. That time very “hing” SE walkman phone.. Big hoo-haa already, got “walkman” download MP3 songs inside, fuiyoh, looks canggih pun.. The next phone, another SE phone too, flipover one.. That time cute ma, pink colour, metallic, flipover, ok jugak, suitable for girls..

      Delete
    4. Next phone, I think straight upgrade to smartphone already.. My first smartphone was Samsung Mini.. Used for a year, then change to Samsung Hello Kitty phone, then Samsung S3 and now, XiaoMi phone, huhuhu..

      Delete
    5. Haha, I remember the Siemens phone with antenna, very popular one. Then the SE walkman thing, yes yes, many people went crazy for it once.

      Delete
    6. i think i recall too the antenna siemen phone. That time very popular . Kira as "in" la.

Kira your parents sayang you la. worried you kena kidnap or what when in college.

I dont think your parents worry about you sms boys la. Maybe wanna make you study more . scare play phone till no study leh

  7. I have owned two mobile phones so far hah..hah.... The first time I used a mobile phone was not my own. It was a company phone. It was those big bulky big ass one. Can't remember the brand. Maybe it was Motorola.

    1. That big old fashioned phone was an embarrassment and I hardly used it and kept it in my handbag. At that time, many people were already using the new and improved smaller phones (that was before the smartphone era) that were slimmer and not bulky.

      Delete
    2. Everytime I had to use that phone in public, aiyo! So malu to take it out of my handbag. Luckily I did not have to use it often. Can die of embarrassment I tell you!

      Delete
    3. But it was useful to use when indoors especially to call home. I was staying at a rented place and it was not convenient to use the landlady's phone. I used to have my caller (my mum hah..hah...) call the landlady's phone but not so nice to chat while landlady is around. With the mobile phone, it made things easier.

      Delete
    4. Then some years later, the company upgrade to a Nokia phone. Those small cute no frills one. It was very user friendly and I hung on to it even though smartphones were already all the rage. I loved that phone so much until one day it dropped and the casing fell apart.

      Delete
    5. So I bought a new one on my own. I still chose Nokia and it looked something like your 2007 phone. Had to learn the functions all over again. But I got used to it and still refused to upgrade.

      Delete
    6. It was only last year when my brother asked if I was interested in Microsoft phone. I was cheap lah RM429 so I agreed. Besides, I was already feeling self conscious using an ancient phone when everyone around was swiping their phone screen hah..hah...

      Delete
    7. So there you have it. I finally got a smartphone and now I love it so much! Can do so many things that the previous phones can't. But this Microsoft phone has it's problems. The keypad is not so friendly and sometimes, it automatically dials number when all I did was to put the phone on standby. Very annoying and also very disturbing to the people who get the "accident" calls. Luckily so far it was my partner, my mum and my brother.

  8. Bila mau upgrade that buah buahan phone? Hihihi

  9. Now this auntie wanst to have a look and comment on your phones. I would have thought that someone like you would have more than 6 phones by now hah..hah... 3. Lina, you are right. He is very down to earth and practical type lah. I did notice. But I thought it might be an exception when it came to phones hah..hah...

    4. 2003 : This one looks more sleek and sophisticated compared to the first one. Got color screen and an additional function - camera! You know, even when I had my own first mobile, though it has a camera, I never used that function. But with my smartphone ah... everywhere pun chik chak chik chak especially when makan at the restaurant.

    5. 2007 : Yah this one the design very canggih and cool. Another one is the Motorola Startac, you know where you can flip the cover. I saw my client using it and I thought it was so stylish back then.

      Delete
    6. 2007 : Oh, too bad your phone kena pick pocket and you had to get another one within the same year. This one lah something like the one I bought when my other phone pecah. I did not bother to sign up for internet because I felt it was unnecessary. Yeah, I can see why you say it is not your style hah..hah...

      Delete
    7. 2007 : Still on this phone, I agree with you that this phone was actually good and useful. Like you, I also hang on to it although most people already switched to smartphones. But in the end I succumbed to the smartphone era although my old phone was still in good condition.

      Delete
    8. 2011 : I suppose if the 2007 phone had not dropped, you would have stayed on with it and migrate to smartphone later? Maybe not lah hee..hee... My partner switched first before I did and I was like a dungu when he asked me to help type message or answer calls on his phone while he was driving. Hmmm...

      Delete
    9. 2014 : Wah Apple iPhone 5S. It looks very cool, so slim. My brother has one like this. I guess if all goes well, you will hang on to this and not change so soon yah? After all it is only one year.

    10. Now that I have jumped on the smartphone bandwagon, I am thinking of changing to Samsung. Why? Because the features on this Microsoft one is not so satisfactory. But this auntie is kiamsiap lah so maybe won't do it so soon.

    11. But nice lah come to think of it, having a smartphone is so much fun. Can whatssapp and send pictures and videos. And can browse internet and go blog hopping to pass time especially when waiting for food to be served etc.

    12. True, smart phone is so much fun and useful. My first smartphone was the Samsung. That's when I started Whatsapping.

  10. My first phone was a Nokia and with a Digi line.
Cannot show off when go back hometown as there was no line. SUCKS. hahaha

Subsequent phones were also Nokia until one time I changed to Sony Ericsson.

Kena stolen, then changed to Nokia Lumia.

Then I jump brand to Samsung.

Now on my 3rd Samsung handphone. ;)

  11. I think I bought many mobile phones since its inception to the world market, after I graduated. That was also the time where mobile phones becoming popular and more mobile plans are introduce. In the past, you needed to buy a phone and then subscribe to the plan, which is more expensive. I remember I follow my bro to buy a phone in the early 90s then for a Motorola heavy phone on the PCN network, which was considered canggih at that time.

My first encountered with mobile phone was a Nokia 'Banana' shape model. It was shown in the movie 'Matrix'. Its actually not my phone but my company gave it to me for work purpose. It was one of the stylish phones then and light as well as it looks good. I felt so 'atas' then!

    1. That was in 1997 and I ditched my pager.muaahahahaha

      Delete
  12. After I left the company, I bought my own phone and it's another stylo phone, the Motorola Startac running on PCN network too.It was a 'clam' shell kinda design but it certain looks good but the reception was bad.

Anyway, I lost the phone to theft where I left it on my desk while away for meeting. That was 1998.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I finally got myself one of those best and reliable Nokia phones to replace my lost startac. This was the time of the Nokia boom ... until it recently defeated by the smartphone makers. I got a Nokia 6+ series phone and running on a GSM 800 network. It was the best phone I had then and the reception is crispy clear. I also can play snake game...hahahaha....

Then, I almost change phone every 2-3 years and all are nokia. I remember the next nokia I got was one that supported WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) where I can surf the net with limited bandwidth and WAP sites. It was one of the first phones to adapt the WAP technology. WAP sites also trying to pick up but not successful.

  14. I was in SG and I subscribed to Singtel for my first phone then the rest are on the new ISP, Starhub which was formed in 2000. I simply love the roaming services where when I was in Malaysia, I can access to all the ISPs based on the strength of the signal like Celcom, Maxis. Digi was not so popular then and reception was also bad.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wireless internet picks up and I got three other nokia phones in 5 years. Then they only supported 2G which is good enough. I remember I watched the Olympics free on my Nokia N series which is the best in the market then with 8GB of storage. THe streaming run on realmedia and the screen size was 2.5 inch. I remember I watch LCW v Lin Dan final on the small screen while coming home in the MRT. I felt so 'atas' then ..hahaha... And, data was free for the Olympics.

    ReplyDelete
  16. My first smartphone was an IPhone 3S and I was excited then. Data was abundance then as I was given 12GB of data here. Running on 3G, it was good enough for Facebook, surf net, instagram, whatapps....etc. Then, with only 3G or sometimes 2G, surfing was good enough though I complain about the battery life of the phone.

Since I signed a 2 year contract, I change phones every 2 years.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Following my Iphone3S, I upgraded to a 4S after my contract ends and eligible to re-contract. It's a much better and faster phone with HD recording and clearer screen as well as more storage with 32Gb.

Anyway, I got tired of iPhone and the small screen and I decided to buy a Samsung galaxy3 without contract. Thus, that was also the time I started changing phone yearly. I gave the ihpone 4s to my wife.

      Delete
  17. Following year, I changed to a phablet, which is a Samsung Note 3. That phone 'wow' me and I can do a lot of things on it especially running with the phone using Runkeeper. With such a big screen, I also can comment on blogs. It was my best phone thus far.

I thought I can use this phone for two years but since I can re-contract yearly (due to that I have special privileges in my ISP), the phone was giving my problems after 1 year and 3 months. With the availability of iPhone 6 which is my current phone, I decided to sell it where I also make some $$ since I bought it over contract.

I got my iphone6+ without contract early this year.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I can recontract my phone again in three months time and I guess I am getting a iPhone6S if the features are great. You can say that now I change my phone every year but I actually sold it away since I bought it at a cheaper price with contract. If the iPhone6S has a lot of features than its predecessor, I make take it and sold my old iphone6 else it will be vice-versa.

In other words, I change phone yearly but I also sell my old phone to cut the loss or make some $$. And I will go for valued phones like iPhones which still can fetch good price.

    ReplyDelete
  19. oh...I also got a xiaomi redmi 1s out of curiosityand use it in Malaysia...hahaha... It's affordable and good to use it also as a backup phone in case my main phone calls it a day.

    1. I still keep my Nokia phone as my back up phone. Just in case, I need to use it.

  20. Hmm, interesting post, me like!

I had my first phone in year 2002, when I was in Form 6, that time we were allowed to bring handphones to school, but of course with limited usage (mainly for emergency purposes). Back at that time, handphones din't have games and apps (may be just a small number of phones have) so we use the handphones just to sms/call.
I still remember very clearly the first phone I had is Nokia 3310!! This model is so popular back at that time and I believe many people also own it too =) It's so nice to use, tahan lasak! Now I believe it's an antique already, may be it doesn't has any value now, or may be it does. Many people jokingly said that this phone is so hard that it can used to crack crabs! LOL!
Anyway, I had the blue one, and it was so expensive back then! About RM 500- RM 600! My dad bought for me, after several beggings from me, haha! Cause you know la, peer pressures, when my friends have phones, I also want one ma! I was so happy and thankful to my dad cause I know he was a bit reluctant to buy for me one actually, cause not cheap and he thought that I don't really need a phone, yet. Anyway, I forgot how long I used that, may be just 1-2 years, after that I get to know my then-bf and he bought me another Nokia model (forgot the model, but it has a 'pen' with it which allows handwriting). Then upon going to University, I changed to another handphone and this time is not Nokia anymore, it was Sony Ericsson, I think it was like yours, T630. After that, changed another one, Samsung, the flip model, more 'feminine' xD
Then, after I graduate, I guess that time, smartphones have slowly been introduced... I had a Samsung Ace series when I went to work. Next, changed to iPhone 4s, and now, my current one is iPhone 5s.

Your Panasonic model is damn classic man! Those with antena ones, haha! 大哥大! I wonder now still can find or not? :p

I think Nokia is a brand everyone is familiar about. It was so popular many years ago! Siemens also, and Sony Ericsson. Now I think no more liao lo.. Erm may be Nokia still have la, it's like the great grandfather of handphones!

Now the common ones are Apple and Samsung lo, right? Though we have other brands like Oppo, Xiaomi and Lenovo.

Ok last but not least, you still can remember the model names of those old phones, geng!

  32. I remember my first one is the 3310, the one can use to hit people, then also nokia the one with color screen, but can't remember which one, then the common phone like so bored cannot close and open like that, so don't know how I got a chance to switch to nokia 6111, the slide phone. Then 5700 because of the camera. And I still remember last time because I was kept on using Nokia, I wanted to switch to sony ericsson so bad, so when I was US I bought Sony Ericsson camera phone Vivaz. After that because of iPhone 4S the white color, because of the white color I go buy iPhone 4S. Then Samsung Note 2, then I gave that to my dad, I switch to Samsung S4, then iPhone 5S because I figure out I like iPhone more, and now is iPhone 6, hehe!! So many ya! Serious, if I didn't list out, I also don't how many did I change already...

    1. I only remember that I don't change mobile phone often too. I only changed my phone when my phones were spoiled or the batteries were spoiled or the chargers were spoiled. My phone life span is about 3 years, the shortest one is my beloved Samsung S3 that dropped inside jamban in 2013 August. That incident caused me heart broken. Because it was my first smart phone and it was only 8 months old.

    2. Now I did some mathematics, I got about 7 mobile phones the most up to now. I still remember I got phone lasted for 4 to 5 years one, especially Nokia phones. Falling down on the floor many times also no problem one. Unlike the smart phone now, easily break, especially the screen. I hope that I can use my current phone, Sony Xperia for another a couple of years before I upgrade my phone again. I bought it in 2013 August, after I said RIP to my Samsung S3.

  40. alo SK...as for your question when I start using handphone ah.. I also cannot recall exactly. I think it would be around 2002 or 2002. Not quite sure about that. That time calls and handphones are very expensive leh. Can't afford to buy . Some more thing of it as a waste of money. After all i can be reach at home or office lo. And if i need to make calls there are public phones around, Back then more public phones available geh. Not like now.

That time i have no idea what handphone is all about and what is a sim card. I thought sim card and phone are together one. Buy phone comes with sim card punya

but when everyone having one lor..then peer pressure or influences, I also end up joining the gang la.

My first phone..i can remember ..it was motorola. Not the one bulky ones like in the movies. Kinda slim. Like your first one. Only mine was the colorful one. That time it was trendy ma. Can change the cover leh. That one kira as very "in" lo. If i recall correctly...i buy that time was around RM600. Mak datuk.....heart ache leh to fork out so much money for the phone and every month still have to fork out more to pay for the phone to makan. That time was having prepaid plan. no feed no call no sms.

That time RM600 was as big as a bull cart wheels for me lo coz my salary was around RM900 only dei.

That phone very the soey leh. Buy not long only,,.,the screen sotplug. Looks like raining on the screen. went back the shop. then the shop sy have to go bukit bintang HQ to fix.

KNS lo. had to take annual leave go there and fix. not immediately get leh. have to wait like one week baru get back.

after that i stick to Nokia liao till not long ago. That time Nokia was popular and was fighting for market with sony ericsson

I like that phone very much . That phone was small enough to put into my pocket. The buttons easy to press too. I can sms accurately without looking at the screen leh with that phone. Not bluffing leh.

  42. I forgotten the reason why I changed to Nokia 6230i lo. I think maybe coz of the color screen liao. That was the time where all phones seems to have color screen and using MMS . Was it then ah? I really don't recall lo.

That phone was slightly bigger that the Nokia 8310i la and it at least can fit into my pocket. I choose phone that is loght and easy to fit into pocket instead of bulky and have to put into handbag. Very jialat la if handphone hilang

  45. year 2000 - still with antenna. That time memang all phone have antenna la. Very troublesome to put into the pocket coz will poke the hip. Some more many cases where the antenna patah because of that. you got hang the mashi maro or doeremon on the antenna or not ? That was a very "in" thing back then . And also the blinking thing where people stick at the back of the phone saying that it will absorb the bad frequency that comes when the phone is in use.
