2015.04.30 | 隔夜燕麥

[Volume 10 Issue 4, #2017]
Finally, My "Belated" Overnight Oat..
Overnight Oat with Raisins, Sunflower Seeds, Almonds and Green Apple

okay, i think overnight oat is something so last year and no more the "in" thing now huh?? well, i have heard about this and wanted to try it out but not until we finally have a fridge in the office.. i didn't do this at home because i spend more time in the office, and i always sleep till the very last minute to get to work, so it's not advisable to make that at home, haha!! i have actually been eating muesli parfait for breakfast all the while, but i quit due to the ever inflating price of muesli and yoghurt, i resorted to just instant oats.. so, when i heard about this overnight oat, i find it looks like what i used to have.. and yes, it really tastes like it when i really get my hands on it!! just that the muesli parfait cost me RM30 for 1kg of muesli and RM2 for a cup of 130ml yoghurt, the overnight oat cost me only RM12 for 1kg of organic oats and RM5 for a bottle of 700ml yoghurt drink.. the latter is of course more economical, i can also add in fruits and nuts to make it taste good..

so, the above is my very first overnight oat in mix-berry yoghurt, served with raisins, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnut and green apple.. a smart idea is to make individual portions in jam jars like this, convenient and to look presentable too!! recipe?? haha, you must be kidding!! this isn't any cooking folks.. anyway, it's unbelievably easy, if i can make it, then none in this earth couldn't!! place equal amount of regular oats (not instant) and any drink you like into a container, cover and leave them overnight in the fridge.. for better taste, serve it with fruits and nuts, bon appetit!! :)

  2. Good morning and happy holidays bloggers.. Starting from tomorrow, long holiday jor lor, until next Tuesday baru come back to work..

Ooohhh, today about overnight oats eh.. I know it’s the in-thing and the new pink at one time.. In FB I see, in blogs I see, actually, it looks very creamy and appetizing.. But nope, I not yet try, coz I don’t really like oats, hehe.. I only like my oats with condensed milk, that’s all.. Hot oats soaked in condensed milk..

    1. But to be honest, I really want to try this cold overnite oats, coz everyone was talking about it.. But then, I gotta spend on fruits and what not, for the sake of decorating it and making it colourful, then take picture, store in hp, then blog about it when I’ve run out of stuffs to blog about, teehee.. I see many overnite oats has kiwi and strawberries and blueberries in it.. Mahal ooohhh, call me cheapo..

    2. My overnite oats ingredients are very simple.. No berries and yoghurt like yours.. From what I read (I choose the simplest one to follow), just oats, cold fresh milk, then let it soak overnite in the fridge, top with chopped bananas (the most cheap way), that’s all.. And top with some nuts, or dried apricot/cranberries if got..

    3. I’m wondering hor, if raw oats, soak in fresh milk, put in fridge, next day, will be soft ahh? Coz I love my oats soft and soggy.. If hard and raw, not nice lor.. Maybe it’s just me la.. But I know, I have to try it to know it.. Maybe find one day, I do and try, and I post about it la.. But no fancy glass jars.. See, if I want to make this, have to buy a fancy glass jar pulak, haizzz… For the sake of camera and the blog, hehehehe.. Put in bowl jer la..

    4. Your recipe looks good too, since I always have yogurt in my fridge all the time - for the boys.. Can just add in a dollop of fruit yoghurt, no problem geh...

    5. errrr depends how you like it la, simple or luxury is all your control mah.. actually I heard any drinks but I think dairy products actually nicer gua?? you can put milk of course then add in yoghurt and then bananas, nice woh I think.. hahahaha, depends on your photography skills also geh not just nice props la.. xD

  3. No worries, if you are making your own food, then to me, that already constitutes as cooking! Yes! Good job!

I tried these overnight oats once, but I don't really fancy it. For me, breakfast I need something warm, so I always make those instant oats instead..

    1. oh really?? you consider that as cooking?? haha, then mine must be the "laziest man cooking"!! instant oats also nice but I think I am one who actually prefers cold stuffs than hot one~~ :p

  4. Errr...It's been a long time since I ate oats. My mum and I used to eat Quaker oats with bran for dinner to lose weight. It was such a torturous thing to eat. So we gave up.

    1. I have heard of this overnight oats and some people are saying that it is so delicious. I guess it depends on what you add to the oats. From your photo, it looks like very thick. I suppose the oats absorb the liquids and expand. It must be quite filling and can last you through to lunch.

      Delete
    2. I was actually thinking to try this overnight oats lah because I still have some leftover organic baby oats (which I bought to bake cookis hee..hee...). But somehow I was not motivated to do it.

      Delete
    3. I heard that the Scottish people eat their oats raw. The soak it in milk or something like that. Maybe that's where the idea of overnight oats came about.

      Delete
    4. I guess it is a convenient breakfast item because it is prepared teh night before. Then the next morning, no need to prepare anything. Just add on your nuts and fruits and makan.

      Delete
    5. But you know, I find it hard to eat cold things in the morning even though I take my coffee cold. Let's say if we add more liquids and less oats, it can become like a drink, right?

      Delete
    6. Yah, I think I want to try this overnight oats just to know what it taste like. Even if I don't like it, at least I know what it taste like. But I am hoping that I like it because this is something healthy.

      Delete
    7. I scrolled up again to take another good look at your overnight oats. I'm thinking thick soft oats with crispy sweet/sour apples and crunchy nuts and yummy raisins. Hey, I think I will like it lah!

      Delete
    8. So any liquids will do yah? Yogurt drink, yogurt, milk or fruit juice. I wonder if can put santan hah..hah...Then that would be like a dessert.

      Delete
    9. yeah I have been eating oats, but just for the past few years, I didn't grow up eating oats, haha!! I take muesli or oats with yoghurt as I like it to be thick, don't really like them with just milk.. and yes, you can use your organic baby oats, they will absorb the liquid overnight and becomes soft.. hence do not use those instant oats, else I think they will dissolve totally, have not tried but can imagine the possibility huh?? yes, juice and milk and yoghurt drink would be ideal, takkan you want to use soft drinks right?? haha.. I have not heard of using soft drinks but maybe you can try?? hahahaha.. anyway I find it too bland to just have the oats, I always like adding in some dried fruits and nuts, it's a lot tastier.. :)

      Delete
  5. I was curious about the muesli parfait because it sounds so exotic and I clicked the link. Alamak! That time you don't have dwi bahasa so I could not benefit from that post. But never mind, I can google it.

    1. You know, tried muesli before. Eat with milk, wah! Sangat sedap! And as you mentioned, it is very expensive. Which is why I don't take it anymore.. When I go to supermarket, I will stare longingly at the packets of muesli hah..hah...

      Delete
    2. Actually muesli is just a mixture of oats and a few other things like dried fruits and nuts, betul tak? In that case we can make our own mix and that will be cheaper.

      Delete
    3. In fact some things like granola bars which are also pricey, can be made at home. Of course lah, troublesome a bit. But for someone whole loves muesli and granola, it could be worth the time and effort, But I know lah, SK tau makan aje :D

      Delete
    4. haha yeah that time I was still writing in just one language, so you can imagine it was so long ago.. yes, those muesli I bought were oats (mixture of rolled and toasted etc) with premium dried fruits and nuts.. I didnt go with milk but yoghurt because I like them to be thick.. actually my "muesli parfait" is just muesli with yoghurt lah, hahaha!! but then as they are getting more and more expensive, I cannot afford but to find alternatives.. this overnight oats is close to what I have been having.. like it!! :)

  10. I have heard about overnight oats but I haven't tried it before as I dislike taking oats. It actually sounds interesting as you get to put in nuts, fruits and others into the oats mixed with yoghurt. Guess it tastes delicious too.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I love oats!! but oats itself is bland so adding in fruits and nuts will make it taste a lot nicer.. of course they are not the same like the Quaker oatmeal that we grew up with.. :)

      Delete
  11. wah, you are eating so healthy food! Muesli is definitely more expensive so I also eat oats than muesli. You really so healthy to use organic oats as well. I won't dare to make this overnight oats in the office by leaving it overnight in the fridge because you need to really trust your colleagues. Who knows someone may sabotage you and add some additional ingredients in your overnight oats.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah, can actually add dried fruits and nuts to make my own "muesli", more economical, haha!! wow, so you don't trust your colleagues or your colleagues hate you until they wanted to sabotage you?? hey, that's not safe to survive in that office already, hehe!! :p

  12. I saw this overnight oats thingy in FB

  13. I also use Princess signature 'jakun' word. I know some ladies took cold yogurt added to cereals or oats or honey stars or corn flaks ...etc, for breakfast but never heard of overnight oats. Not even my wifey.
When I read your post, first thing comes to my mind.... would it cause you to 'lau sai' ? It's cold, contains of yogurt and oats... aiyo...if it's me, sure visit the toilet before reaching the office!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. haha, yes I do think this really helps in digestive system, to me I won't "lau sai" lah but after eating this I can have very smooth business in the toilet.. I think it's the fibre from oats as well as those good bacteria in the yoghurt.. you are lactose intolerant??

      Delete
    2. I am not lactose intolerant...maybe not used to it as well as I needed a hot kopi in the morning. So, it's like ying and yang imbalance ...muahahahaha...

      Delete
    3. haha so you are actually a "cold base" kind of body?? I guess it's the coffee addiction only lah probably, you just have a cup in the morning everyday?? :p

      Delete
  14. Yeah, I really 'jakun' with all these mixed of cold oats. My breakfast is very simple... a cup of kao kopi and kaya toasts. Once or twice a week, I have 2 half boiled eggs together with it.
In between, I have economic mee hoon, which is common in SG here with a cup of kopi kao la...
All very cheap....around $3-4 per meal.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. this breakfast also very simple mah, just throw everything into a container, tuck into the fridge and the next morning just take out to enjoy.. here!! convenient leh~~ :)

    3. perfect for lazy people:p

  15. I once tried oats or flakes with cold milk and yogurt, in the hotels' breakfast. Somehow. I don't quite like it, it's too cold for a morning brekkie which I believe it should be warm to soothe the stomach. Its filling but when I drank a cup of hot kopi (a must) , something will go wrong with my digestion system and next... I will detox.... muahahaha...
I rather go for ham, salad, buns, red beans, egg with hot coffee.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh of course I love those breakfast in hotels where I got a buffet of hot and cold items.. but I usually start with cold course, at least a cup of juice and salad then only I go for hot food.. even in usual kopitiam I also order cold drinks to go with my food.. errr, just a habit..

      Delete
  16. Anyway, this mixture of cold oats with muesli and yogurt sure is an healthy breakfast! And got fruits some more !! It's really a nutritious and power energy breakfast. It's equivalent to those fruity or yogurt muesli bars I had at times to counter my hunger pangs at work.
I am sure it will give you all the required nutrients.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes it something like muesli bar if you are more used to it.. oats and dried fruits and nuts, I just love this combination.. well it is surely filling but then I have to say, it won't last for me la, still I am hungry pretty soon later.. only rice and noidoes will last for me :D

      Delete
    2. Yes, i am more use to muesli bars, at least they are not cold...muahahhahaha.
And , I had it with my protein drink. It's really full for light supper.

      Delete
    3. wah that is really "geng"!!! muesli bar with protein, indeed supplement all the nutrients you need leh.. good!!! :)

  17. Btw, this post gave some insights. I can make one if I am suffering from constipation...muahahaha...
I remember a doc asked my nephew, who has constipation for a few days, to eat yogurt mixed with fruits. Together with prescribed medicines, he has a wonderful time in the toilet after that.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes I would definitely recommend this is you are suffering from constipation.. sure help you to "flush" easily after you have eaten.. a very good remedy indeed :p

      Delete
  18. Oh...yeah, it do certainly contains lots of fibre which aids the digestion system, as well as good bacterias from the yogurt. And, those oats surely contains lots of vitamins.

I had my fibre and lactobacillus (good bacteria) from supplements. Sometimes, I tried to take a lof of fibre rich fruits like guava to supplement my fibre intake.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh so you have them through supplements, I think they are not cheap huh since those supplements are extracted from the best sources and the processed to make it even better.. me cannot afford la, so just get them from food..

      Delete
  19. So, how long it takes you to prepare it though it sounds simple? As for me, I usually don't have the patience to prepare food for tomorrow including simple spread of kaya on bread. I just want to settle all my stuffs when I am alone in SG after a workout and relax in an air-cond room.
OK la... I prefer to eat out, less trouble...muahahha...
I know some of my foreigners' colleagues likes to bring their breakfast and lunch to work and they woke up very early to prepare it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. it's really simple leh, just throw everything in and tuck it into the fridge.. I think preparation time is not more than 5 minutes.. but probably eating time can be long since you will have a lot of chewing to do, haha!! :)

      Delete
  20. So, all in all, did you save $$ compare to eating out ? Of course, I am sure this nutritious food cannot be compare to those not so nutritious and unhealthy oily breakfast outside. So, even if it's more expensive, it is still worth it.
Try getting some organic food in nuts and fruits too. Much more healthy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think it makes much difference in the end, coz add up all the oats, yoghurt and fruits and nuts probably can be about RM4 already.. those nuts can be quite expensive, but then it's for a change also la, sometimes eat out everyday also jelak leh..

      Delete
  21. Once, my MLM friend asked me to try drinking a mixture of beverage which will give me all the nutrients, fibre and vitamins and keep me full. It's simple, just mixed a few scoops of the powder and mixed with water and drink. It only lasted me 2 hours while some of my friends especially ladies said they are full. Well, maybe I am big...hahhaa

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. eih those MLM products sure can pack in all the nutrients you need lah, but then u don't think they are quite economical huh?? anyway, I have to agree with you, though I find those meal supplement things quite filling but I won't say they are lasting, I still get hungry fast!! hahaha~~ give me five!!!

      Delete
  22. Maybe with your creative mind, you can prepare some varieties of it and sell to your colleagues ? hahaha.. It's just like how you sell your souvenir online. Can give it a thought especially ladies who don't have much time in the morning rush, as well folks like you who sleep until the last minute before waking up for work...muahahaha...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. haha don't think I'll do so la, it's just some very simple thing leh, everyone can do it.. if I can do it, no one else in this world can't!! hehehe.. you give it a try and you will know how easy it is.. but of course if selling this, it will be more about packaging to make it look more attractive and more worth it.. :)

      Delete
  23. Fuh! I've never tried this as I like to have hot drinks in the mornings. Maybe if I do succumbed to this one day, it will be for tea break as that is the time I like to eat cold stuffs :)

    1. oh I am surprised you have not tried this before!! errr I think the kids would love to eat this, and probably you can get Ethan to do it for you too, it's basically campus everything and tuck into the fridge :)

  27. SK, my all time favourite breakie is overnight oat. I love it, I everyday also eat overnight oat. My overnight oat really overnight many days in the fridge at home one. I prepare it in the evening and bring to office on the next day. but my overnight oat very simple one.

    1. I seldom put fruit, unless i have bananas. I love putting bananas on my overnight oat. I will put chia seeds, raisins and pumpkin seeds. That's all. The oat that i use is those big rolled oats, I always bought from organic shop. Two packets only RM12 (before GST). I stocked up a lot of rolled oat before GST.

      Delete
    2. I love overnight oat, because it is healthy, easy to prepare, nutritious and yummy. It is my type of breakie actually. It is kind of filling too.

I will put plain yogurts sometimes. Most of the time, I put soy milk or formula milk to soak the oat overnight.

Your overnight oat looks no bad to me here. I never put into jar. I stock my overnight oat into different size of air tight containers, then it is easy for me to bring to office.

      Delete
    3. It is of course better taste to put in nuts. Like you say, nuts are very expensive, therefore I put raisins and chia seeds nowadays. I never feel "jelak" having oat every morning. I just love it.

      Delete
    4. Even i go for buffet breakfast, the first thing I take is oat. Only weekends, I allow myself to have a break from oat. I will go out having breakfast with my family.

    5. I really adore overnight oat, and I thank those who share overnight oat recipe with me. It makes my life so easy. I don't have problem thinking of what to eat in the morning now, especially I lead a very hectic and busy life.

      Delete
    6. Besides taking overnight oats, I take steamed sweet potatoes in the late afternoon. Otherwise I will be too hungry before lunch time. it is a better idea to eat many meals buy small meals. Starvation will make me eat more than usual, therefore, I try not to make myself starve now.

      Delete
    7. Another reason I love overnight oat best, it is because it is cold from fridge. I love everything cold. I don't take fruit which is not kept int he fridge.

      Delete
    8. SK is more hardworking than me, you cut green apple when you eat overnight oat, I only tear the bananas into smaller chunks to put on my overnight oat.

    9. SK, i like this post of you, simply because I like overnight oat, I have so many things to write about overnight oat.

Too bad my jin jin never like overnight oat, he said he will vomit when seeing overnight oat.

Last time he didn't take steamed sweet potatoes, now he will fight the sweet potatoes with me. I hope he will like overnight oat in future.

    10. SK, thank you for making the comparison of price between muesli and oat. Thumbs up! I remember that it was you to tell me that muesli is very expensive in one of your comments at my post. I need to something more reasonable in term of price, as I need to consume everyday.

      Delete
    11. hehehe, when i was drafting this post, i also thought of Mak Yannie leh, because i know she loves overnight oats the most and she is eating that everyday.. yeah, i am late in making this but i think i will be eating this more often now since we have got a fridge in the office.. but i don't go into office at the same time everyday, sometimes just have to settle breakfast outside before i go in.. so probably the overnight oats would be like afternoon snack for me, good enough.. errr, i also lazy to purposely cut the fruits, just that for this post in order to make the photo looks more presentable, i did that.. usually just nuts and raisins will do, no fresh fruits, not even bananas~~ :D

      Delete
    12. But then, SK, just to share with you. I made one overnight oats last week, and I forgot there was this long weekend because of Labour Day and Wesak Day, when I brought to work on Tuesday. The taste of my overnight oats became very awful. Yucks! So better don't prepare so early. About 3 to 4 days still ok. A lesson learned by Yannie .

      Delete
    13. I won't put too long, the next day I will consume already.. I actually find it tastes a bit like alcohol probably due to the yoghurt bacteria fermenting inside, hahaha!! so I make sure I finished it the next day, don't even dare to leave it two nights leh.. thanks Yannie for the tips!!! overnight oats also must 趁新鮮, haha!! :p

    1. hahaha, i don't like milo at all especially the hot ones, if you serve me milo i would prefer the cold ones.. actually i think overnight oats is as simple as making milo also, it's the perception that makes you think it's troublesome :p
