okay okay, i know the picture above is rather disgusting.. but if you can still remember, i blogged about my "healthy food" a fortnight ago and slightly mentioned my dad's very horribly oily cooking at home?? so i am showing you what "horribly oily" means now, just look at the picture above.. just tilt the dishes and i can easily "collect" this amount of oil (in units of tablespoon) at the corner of the plate, but i'm not complaining since my dad cooked with all his heart.. being the last one to have dinner, i usually clear up all the dishes if possible to show my appreciation.. of course, i really have to tilt the dishes so that i can get rid of the excess oil, and sometimes i even have to rinse the dishes with soup or hot water to wash away the oil.. haha!! oh my, now you get what i meant by "horribly oily" and why i gotta have oats for breakfast everyday?? :D

    3. I laughing la.. Scary picture? I think my comment will be cursed.. I somemore say I "hoi wai" leh, if I eat the oil+soya sauce with rice..

By the way Meow, I love your comment in my post today.. People who ask me why dont you cook fresh? Why wana freeze? It's not good, etc.. Eh, who dunno mum is a woman? If I can cook fresh daily, of coz I would have done it.. But please la, unless my mum eats porridge with G everyday, ok la.. If not, the balance of carrot or potato who eat up?

    4. Good afternoon ladies and SK. Xiao Ying you have the first sip here today. Why so scary? nothing lar... just Oily Only! Maybe you're scared off by the two "Argghhh" face expression..

      Delete
    5. Haha yea, it's not scary, just a bit gerli :p

But I guess what 小影 is trying to say is the color of the oil makes the picture 'scary'? At first glance we might not know it's actually oil, but something else.
Plus usually SK only shows us 'beautiful' photos, no ugly ugly photos one ma :p

      Delete
    6. haha, yes!! GERLI is the word, kekeke, no scary lah.. maybe 小影 had something else in mind when she sees the photo?? only the Princess Ribbon likes to lick that plate full of oil~~ :D

      Delete
    7. I think maybe I'm the one something wrong here wor.. I really don't mind eating that gravy with rice wor..

      Delete
    8. yierr, then i think you will love "g yao lou fan" (pork lard with rice) very much lor?? errr, think also i feel gerli already leh~~ :p

      Delete
    9. Yah la, I mean gerli, but at that moment I can't think of other words else mah, usually like this oily well just "slide the plate" to eat it, because me and sisters can't imagine the oil go inside to our stomach and stick into to it, awe~~~ >.<!!!

Princess Ribbon you seriously eat like that argh? Maybe you're too young so can do so, hehe!!! Because I got influenced by my family a lot, like my mom has diabates, she won't take too sweet food, so those like herbal tea or red bean soup, she never put sugar in, so I used to drink the kosong one, I think maybe because of this I hardly picky on food!!! Also, my mom and her family all original has the "three high" high blood cholesterol, hypertension and also high blood sugar!!! So must be very take care of our health, like one of my cousin already kena these three high in very young age and it can't be cure, it'll follow you until the end of your life!!! People might say then take medicine, but as we all human can't forever take the madicine, because those are not good for the bones, so like my mom she has to take those madicine to control her high blood sugar also another one to protect the bones!!! It's very troublesome one, so the best is to we ourself do our best to keep our body healthy la!!! =]

      Delete
    10. 小影, very true. We cannot just say we don't care and take medicine to control it. Forever it will never helps. I prefer to eat and live healthy than taking all sorts supplements.. I don't think it is good for our body too.

    11. I would cry with joy if my father could even make me a cup of hot Milo!!!! Here you complained dad's cooking was oily. My father never made me a drink all my life and not to mention cook instant noodles for me! I would eat happily no matter how oily it could be.

      Delete
    12. yeah, i think we should all eat moderately and try to avoid too much oil, too much sugar and too much salt.. and also combine healthy diet with a healthy lifestyle, then we would stay strong and healthy, haha!!

aiyoh, TM, i am not complaining lah, do i sound like i am complaining?? in fact i didn't at all, i just share with my readers my dad's cooking only~~

    3. Good morning Sharon and Xiao Ying

      Me haven't have breakfast leh...

sore throat. recovered but now having super duper sexy voice...muhahahaha...

Cant eat nasi lemak for the moment.

      Or anything too oily ....

Firt when i saw the photo I thought SK having Wantan mee. and showing the plate of noodles so oily. Read the post baru tau it's his dad cooking

      Delete
    4. i had my breakfast, and you all know what i had lah, haha.. oh, wantan mee ah?? have to see which stall lah, some very oily but some are not woh, the sauce ngam ngam enough for the mee and won't leave extra behind leh..

      Delete
    5. Meow, drink more water la.. Nowadays, a lot people cough la, sore throat la, fever la, phlegm la.. G's cough+phlegm has been on going for about 2 months! Tried western medicine, chinese bou ying dan, everything.. But still got phlegm.. Scared la, later kena masuk hospital suck out the phlegm then teruk case lor..

Eh, talking about wantan mee, people also use shallot oil to make ma.. Come on, am sure everyone agrees, without the "chung yau" (shallot oil), dried noodles don't taste nice liao, kan?

      Delete
    6. Mamarazzi, oh not feeling well eh? No wonder you commented so short and rush that day la~
So recovered already? Yea it takes few more days to gain back the voice, hehe, so must take good care and totally cannot take heaty food, not even a little bit! Cause sorethroat will come back easily, must wait til fully recover first. Nasi lemak, hmm, tahan je la~ What to do? You sure don't wanna get sorethroat again right?

Speaking about sorethroat, actually I am very keen to get it one, I wonder why? I hardly get cough or fever (touchwood touchwood) but I get sorethroat very easily! I asked dr why and he said I must have eaten so many fry food. Hmm, to be honest I do eat fry stuff but not very often ma! Plus I drink lots of water daily, and even take at least 2 types of fruits daily, why sorethroat still come to find me one?! Aiyoyo, I hate it when I have sorethroat, very suffering one! Don't say about getting the sexy voice, but swallow saliva also very painful, really makes me feel like don't eat/drink anything at all! But at the same time, tummy grumbling wo, so how? :p

Anyway, Mamarazzi, remember to drink lotsa water! Also can try some 'leong cha'~

      Delete
    7. wah, all people so caring about Mamarazzi lah.. sore throat the cough ah, i know one remedy very good one.. saw on Facebook: cut an orange about 1/4 from the top, use chopstick to poke some holes, and then sprinkle a handful of salt on the flesh, then steam for 10 minutes.. drink the juice and it will help the cough a lot..

      Delete
    8. Mamarazzi take care ya, drink more water and rest more!!! =]

      Delete
    9. Got shadow or not SK? I want to try this remedy. I was like start coughing jor. Thanks for sharing the idea.

      Delete
    10. i think Mamarazzi will recover faster if she reads more books!! haha..

aiyoh, Angeline ah Angeline!! i read until 8 eyes when you ask got shadow or not!! haha.. of course got shadow lah, i read from FB and internet one.. you can try that lah..

  3. Oh? For a moment, I thought you were complaining about the oil from the kampua noodles I sent you.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That's what they are used to - using a lot of oil, salt and msg in their cooking - and in the past, they used their own home-made lard even. Old habits die hard...and they will tell you it would not be nice otherwise.

      Delete
    2. This is very comment at many places if you eat out especially when it comes to Malay food - they use a lot of oil to fry the multiple ingredients used and if it is chicken, the melted fat from the bird would make it worse. Look around and you can see the one-inch layer of oil floating on top of the curry at those nasi campur stalls.

      Delete
    3. When I cook chicken (soup) at home and a lot of fat comes out of the bird, I would use my fat separator to get rid of the oil:
      http://suituapui.wordpress.com/2012/07/25/conscious
Too bad I can;t use it on myself. Hehehehehehehe!!!!!!

      Delete
    4. If you do not have the separator, you can put the dish in the fridge - the fat will harden and you can get rid of it easily.

      Delete
    5. LOL...takut? Nah...the oil in the instant kampua not that much what. and the sauce where got so black punya...unless you sent his the black sauce ones la

      Delete
    6. Yup..my granny used to have pork lard oil at home. Goreng and get the oil. use it in cooking. ahem ahem...but the the cooking memang got difference leh... taste nicer ones leh.

      Delete
    7. Usually if we tapau the gulai or curry from stalls home , husbby will pour away the oil from the top layer of the packet. Mother in law pulak will take the kitchen tissue and serap out the oil.

      Delete
    8. For me if the dish gonna be eaten next day i will put in fridge as you have suggested ,STp. Next day can see the white oild harden on top. Just use the spoon and scrape away all the oil kau tim.

ahem ahem..me not oil separator gadet wor *wink wink* LOL

      Delete
    9. haha, no lah, the kampua noodles doesn't have that much of oil lah, just that little sachet of lard.. but look at those dishes, can easily scoop three tablespoonfuls of oil dei, isn't that scary enough??

errr, only if i am cooking lah, then of course i will have control over the oil.. but then to freeze the dish?? eih, then what i am going to have for dinner?? have to let it freeze for few hours, then scrap off the oil, and reheat the dish again?? aiyoh, like that supper time over already i still cannot eat lah, haha!! :D

      Delete
    10. My method same with STP, hi 5!
I boil my soup using chicken or pork.. Whichever also sure got oil one.. I strain it, put in jars (for future consumption), let it cool and put in the fridge.. Once it hardens, the layer of fat on top can be easily scrapped using a spoon..

Don't curse me, however, sometimes leh, the hubs likes to use this layer of oil to cook.. He says more "heong".. Errr I know la not healthy..

      Delete
    11. wah, your hubby really knows how to enjoy woh.. err, but i think this type of oil from boiling soup is not that bad lah.. better than those from lard?? haha, dunno lah, i don't cook one mah~~ :D

      Delete
    12. Same here, when there're oils floating on the chicken soup then mme or my eldest sister will stand to "bat" the oil out slowly, because my mom can't see it clearly, so me or my sister got to do so, she said she doesn't want the oil stick in her stomach, hehe!!!

      Delete
    13. Use chicken breast meat to boil soup lor. Not that OILY...

      Delete
    14. yeah, if i can "baat" the oil out then i would surely do that.. cannot tahan seeing those oil floating and then goes into my stomach leh~~

  4. Elo, elo.. Morning.. A food post ahh? Not yet read actually.. Come here to say hi first.. Got work to do.. I come back in a short while okie?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ok, am back.. Ok, I know many will “sue” me or curse me, but I’m still commenting from my heart.. I LOVE those oils! Depending on what oil you use (some use olive oil), it’s kinda yummy.. Ok, I’m talking about fried fish, then sure you will pour some oil and soya sauce on top right? Ask 10 people, and 11 people will agree.. First, fry garlic, put aside.. Next, fry the fish.. After the fish is done, use back the oil and pour on top of the fish, add soya sauce.. Lastly, scoop those pre-fried garlic and put on top of the fish, and serve.. Everyone in the family will “lou” the oil+soya sauce and eat with 3 bowls of rice.. Ngam mou? Ok, maybe it’s just me.. But give me (fried) fish oil (mixed with soya sauce), I can eat a mountain of rice..

      Delete
    2. Since this topic is about oil (and fried fish), let me drag a little to restaurant food.. In restaurant, there’s always steamed fish right.. Don’t ask me the name coz I’m not very expert in it.. I know la the names, but I dunno the look of the fish.. I know patin, tilapia, hung jou, fei zhau.. what else?

Ok, anyway, back to the topic, they will steam the fish, then same thing.. After the fish is done, they will pour some oil, soya sauce and put those pre-fried garlic (and fresh ginger) on top.. The gravy nice right? Am sure kids (and of course adults) can eat a lot of rice with just the gravy.. Some people will say, without “some” oil, the dish is not appetizing, I guess you all will agree kua?

      Delete
    3. Next, curry mee.. Those sold in kopitiam, coffeshops, cafes.. When the kari mee is served, surely there are some oil floating on top of the mee soup right? We still wallop the entire bowl without complaining.. Ok la, maybe will complain, but in the end, still finish one rite.. Again, without “some” curry oil, the curry mee won’t look appetizing kua.. Hor?

      Delete
    4. To be honest, after I see your picture (minus your “so oily” captions and emoticon), I feel “hoi wai” wor.. I am imagining this dish is fried fish. Ngam mou? Even if it’s not fried fish, I think this is some fried meat or whatever, then oil +soya sauce added towards the end.. I got a feeling somebody in the family will scoop some (I said some) of that “gravy” on the rice and “lou” together and eat.. Ok ma, “hoi wai” kan? But not too much ok, I said “some”…

Take luncheon meat for example.. We sometimes put or no put “some” oil on the pan before frying.. If want more “heong”, can put some oil.. If not, can just use back the oil from the luncheon meat to cook.. Everybody not complaining about luncheon meat I guess.. Give me a bowl of rice and a few pieces of luncheon meat, I think I am contented already.. Dunno about u la.. Luncheon meat is fattening and oily also ma.. But again, without “that” oil (and taste), it won’t taste the same anymore, kan?

After luncheon meat, I wana talk about bacon pulak.. Come on, admit it.. After you fry bacon, you don’t throw away the oil right? You will either keep the oil, or immediately use it back to fry something else.. After you fry your bacon, you scoop up your bacon, you immediately fry mushrooms (or other stuffs) in that oil liao.. “heong” ma, kan? Or you use back the bacon oil to cook the gravy for your dish.. Take for example, carbonarra.. After frying that bacon, you sure use back that oil to cook with cream, mushrooms, onions (and what nots), add cream, egg yolks and toss with your pasta.. Ask everyone, I guarantee they use back the bacon oil to cook the carbonarra sauce..

      Delete
    5. Actually in Chinese cooking, it’s impossible to ask the fella to cook without much oil la.. Unless we buy healthy oil for our parents to cook for us lor.. Like olive oil or wat.. But then, some olive oil is not suitable for cooking (or frying), be sure to check the labels.. Some olive oil only suitable to toss and eaten just like that, without cooking, like pasta or salads.. So have to check the labels and see which is for what..

      Delete
    6. Oil is good for us.. But (don’t curse me yet, I say BUT) also have to depend on what type of oil.. Take Scotts Emulsion for example.. Again, I may not be 100% right, but I think most parents give their kids Scotts Emulsion (or 7 Seas), whatever is it, it’s still fish oil.. So fish oil is good for us, yes..

Steamed fish, all kinds of fish, especially the “yue lam” (tummy) is good.. Yep, the texture is “smooth” and fattening, but it’s good oil.. I will be the first to hog the “yue lam” when the steamed fish arrives the table.. And the fish head too.. Full of good oil and collagen timmm..

Ok, burrrpppp… Time to get back to work..

      Delete
    7. Good morning princess ribbons.

You still young can afford la to take in all those oil. I think everyone of us at one point of our life will like the oil but then as grow oil cannot take in that much oil daily.

Now I also cannot tahan too much oil. If the wantan mee too much oil or the vegetable too much oil i will get indigestion. Old jor. system shutting down

      Delete
    8. that one is called "Yau Jum" (oil droused) steam fish i think..Normal ginger or teo chew steam fish they wont put more oil on top of the fish.

A bit of oil is good la. Too much will make some diners feel muak.

      Delete
    9. Hahaha...yea agree with you there...curry mee served in the hawker shop and restaurant usually have a line of oil floating on top. Saw they after put curry, they will put a layer of oil.

Normally i will tell them less oil.I went to the one Chicken Cuisine restaurant and had kari mee and they know that and they will put less oil

      Delete
    10. Yea have to use better oil. But not oilive oil la. darn expensive leh. The way SK's father uses oil one bottle not even half month will habis liao lor.

Maybe Naturel or something like that la. am using that for stir frying. But if wanna goreng keropok will use the Knife or Neptune oil coz those are more suitable for frying

Yea hard to tell the elder to use less oil when cooking coz they are accustomed to it already

      Delete
    11. yalah, i agree that it's impossible to have no oil at all, and i think we do need some oil in our body.. but the thing is, don't make it too oily lah, like the photos above, aiyoh, so scary lah.. i would think it does not necessarily need to be so oily, maybe cut down to one-third of the usage will be perfectly nice lah.. and come to oil, of course it has also to depend on what type of oil.. olive oil ah, omega-3 ah and those what poly-unsaturated ones are good lah.. but pork lard and recycled-many-times oil and those unhealthy oil, really i hope to avoid them :)

      Delete
    12. Elo, am back to checkout the comments.. Wah,l so fast 55 comments liao yer.. And it's not even lunch time.. So everyone sure go for wantan mee or kari mee afterwards for lunch yer?

But Meow, you cannot eat kari me ok.. You stay home eat porridge enuff la.. You eat ching-ching dei enuff la, since you got sore throat and all..

Aiya, my MIL also the same.. Every week, when we go to her place for dinner, all her dishes all "yau jum" one.. Even the green vege.. Imagine fried choy sum also "yau jum".. If she cooks white-cut chicken, lagi the dressing "yau jum".. But nice leh, without the dip, the pak jam gai not nice leh.. She fried shallots, add a lot of oil, soya sauce, sesame oil, some "yim sai", wahloa, I tell you, I can eat the whole chicken.. But too much is not good la..

I cannot resist pak jam gai skin leh.. If I see fatty juicy skin, I sure sapu the skin liao.. Maybe many people will jelak la, aiya, but pak jam gai not everyday eat ma.. Only once a while, during tai yat ji or something.. Jou yin ji, if I see the skin, I'll go crazy... I sure grab the skin.. Hehehehehe...

    13. wah, this Princess Ribbon described until so yummy lah.. but then sometimes it's quite true that most of the nice food are not healthy lor.. healthy food are most of the time not as nice, muahahaha!! but this Princess Ribbon so skinny, can have quota to take more fats lah.. me already fat, cannot dei~~

      Delete
    14. Agree that healthy food are not tasty, like my sister, she bought B22 omega oat that one, she had it once then not nice so never want to touch it again!!! =.=!!! I always tell her don't waste it, at least finish it first, then she told me..."you eat it with me lo!! >.<!!!" Like that also can?

      Delete
    15. Food with oil looks nicer, noodles with oil look tastier, chicken rice with oil looks good and smell good too. See? this is the trick from outsider food mar.

Nowadays, whenever I Da Pao chee cheong fun, keow teow soup or wan tan mee for example, I 'll ask the taukeh so not to add those garlic oil... into my noodles...

I don't eat pak zham gai, But I eat roasted one - so the skin taste nicer too... LoL...

Xiao Ying, if the oats taste not nice, but at least got partner to share and eat together then that is another different story because, when got partner to eat together, we feel more happier... good good good! Don't waste lar..

      Delete
    16. haha, you tell your sister lah, you buy for me then i eat with you.. and eating together something that doesn't taste nice, can probably make that thing taste nicer woh!! haha, what kind of theory is that!! :D

  5. Sometime can understand the way elderly cook can be very oily one, I've tried before but just slide a bit the plate to eat lo, coz don't want the oil kena the vege wat!

But when eat outside, we'll say "the oil is very cheap is it? if not how come they put some much oil?"

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Usually my case will be garam or gula turun harga... LOL

but i noticed nowadays more and more restaurant/stalls food have less oil and sugar liao. Maybe these item price increased very much so everyone jimat cermat when using. Just hope they dont recycle the oil too many times enough la.

      Delete
    2. yeah, different generation lor.. the elderly say must put more oil only "fragrant" but the younger generation will be more health conscious lah.. anyway, the one who cooks put oil, the one who eats will try to filter lor.. haha!! :D

      Delete
    3. Hard to please everyone, hor?

      Delete
    4. Haha sure hard to please everyone, everyone has different taste bud, but then nowadays lots of hawker also started to be more healthy already, can see they write 'less oil' or something like that on their stall poster.
Some people even promote being a veggan to be more healthy, and say no to killing animals too~

      Delete
    5. yeah, people now are more health conscious lah, they know all the 3 low - low fat, low sugar, low salt would be healthier :)

      Delete
    6. When the 3 low - low fat, low sugar and low sugar, then the price of the dish will be different ady. Not cheaper but more expensive... plus the word there...Organic Char Keow Teow! Hehehe

      Delete
    7. yalor!! i actually don't understand also lah.. less fat, less sugar, less salt.. but then the price is even more expensive than more fat, more sugar, more salt!! what's the economic here?? confused @_@"

    10. But, I've a bff, who's work in the lab, she told me those low fat or zero fat actually is not help at all, those will makes you gain fat some more, she told me to choose other flavor but not those!!!

      Delete
    11. Xiao Ying and SK, think of this;

Low fat and zero fat - I don't believe it too. I always choose normal one. Belief me or not. We must be moderate in taking any kinds of food. The more we take also not healthy... so "agak agak"...you can eat and taste any new food, but moderately lor. Or else how to enjoy life? Plus exercise also lor. Exercise is very important too. But don't go eat KFC or eat one big bowl of ramen after 1hr session of yoga? Alll back to square lor... sigh...

      Delete
    12. yeah, actually those low fat or zero fat, could have more artificial additives to make it taste more normal right?? hmmm, i am convinced since you say your friend work in the lab.. but then sometimes it's the psychological thing that make us buy low fat things lor, haha!! but come to the bottomline, it's all down to our diet and lifestyle also lah :D

It's braised "sam chang bak" (fatty meat) with hard boiled eggs.. Black dish.. Very "hoi wai" one.. Something like tau ewe bak.. She packs food for us to bring home ger ma sometimes.. Wah, the next day when we wana heat up the meat ahh, the layer of fat is on top of the container.. You will run away, but I still heat up together anyway...

Certain stuff really need to deep fry first then only nice.. Like butter ayam or butter sotong.. Have to deep fry first, put aside.. Then to make the sauce, lagi mau letak butter (plus some oil) kan?

    5. Princess Ribbon, I just had that dish last night! MIL's cooking, I wallop 2 eggs, with the egg yolks together some more *guilty*
I can see everytime she cooks this dish, there'll sure be lots of oil in it! With lots of fatty meat some more, actually those fatty meat contributes to the oil also!
Though I sounds so glutton but really can't help it, everytime I see this dish I'll eat slightly more rice, haha, cause the gravy is so good!
I think it's ok to eat slightly oil once a while, don't do it daily la, or too frequently. Some dishes must be oily in order to be yummy, agree? Even the 'tau yew bak' also same, must be oily then only good one wo!

And everytime after having heavy/oily food, just make sure to sweat it out lo! Then it should be fine!
Like later I got yoga lesson, must do a bit harder than usual, to burn all the fats I ate yesterday, and today, kakaka xD

Mamarazzi, can try using healthier oil lo, like olive oil, though the taste will be slightly different already la, but sometimes for the sake of our health, must do some sacrifices~

    9. Hayley, yep, we usually go to MIL's place for dinner every Saturday.. So she packs some food for us to take home and put into containers.. We will put the food in the fridge, and only heat it up on Monday lor.. We purposely leave the food until Monday so that we don't have to cook after work lor.. Sometimes the food can last til Tuesday.. But I know it's not good la, keep so long in the fridge.. The "kak yeh" dishes not good to overnite so many days, I know..

Oh yeah, when my MIL cooks that fatty pork bwith egg, I can eat 3-4 eggs leh, together with the yolk somemore.. And guess what, she adds in intestines too !! My favourite.. Err, so will I be cursed for talking about unhealthy food here?

Hmm just had my lunch - Pork trotters with vinegar - Chu Keok Chou, green vege - choy sam, Four Heavenly Kings - Sei Dai Tin Wong and white rice. Splendid lunch I had today - But it terms to relate with your post today, definitely is an oily meal lor, especially the Chu Keok Chou. You all must be wondering who belanja since I have 45mins of lunch break oni. Actually, I didn't go out lar.. mana sempat kan? After sending my son to school, I straight away "Da Pao" eco rice to work. This eco rice shop is very convenient for those who goes to work early, cos' this shop open as early as 7am. So today, I saw got so many "hou liew", so decided to get those dishes as I mentioned earlier. Take note ya - not everyday!

In the morning, get to eat "Yau Char Kwai". So nice dip with with my Nescafe White Coffee... Oily or not? Colleague bought some for us today.

Dinner, I'm not sure yet. Water rationing starts today in Taiping. Today my area don't have water leh. Probably need to "Da Pao" or dine outside. Probably another oily meal again.

Ok alr, I know you all not interested with my menu of the day, but it is an example how much OIL comsumption we have in a day, if we didn't control it. Imagine, right now my body is full of oily stuffs...Yucks!!!

    1. Good afternoon Angeline!
Yea water rationing starts today! For 2 weeks right? Damn! Your area no water today, same like my mum's place, but mine got, but this weekend, our turn to experience no water, haih, cannot imagine la! For 2 weeks leh! Must be so so inconvenient! I am a person who use water a lot everyday, wash this wash that~ Saturday I can go back my mum's place, but Sunday.... I told hubby why not we go somewhere else this Sunday? Haha xD Shun bian go shopping, LOL!
I guess my MIL won't be cooking when there's no water, just go out eat la, easier~
But luckily it rain today, kinda heavy too, I believe if everyday also rain a bit, like for 1-2 hour, the water rationing won't be so bad? I hope so!

Oh, I thought you went out for lunch, haha! Your chap fan sounds so yummy! I love that pork trotters with vinegar, I can wallop a big bowl of rice just with that dish, keke~
Hmm I wonder which chap fan stall is that?

    2. Ever since, my father had his operation last year. My mum try her very best to cook healthier each day for him and her grandchildren. Use chicken breastmeat/pork lean meat/mushroom/anchovies to boil soup instead of chicken feet ribs, and marrows. If really have to cook drumstick and thighs, mummy will remove the skin.

My MIL is more health conscious in her cooking. Every process must be done properly. She always make sure all her ingredients are good and washed thoroughly. One thing I find a bit strange is -she likes to use medium heat for all her cooking. She is afraid of too much oil spilt out in her kitchen area. Then, probably she wants every food she cook is perfectly cook and nice until golden brown - healthy right? nothing is over burnt here. Maybe can save the gas usage too because she use medium heat.

But to think reasonablely, I would say the food is not healthy. When comes to stir fry and deep fry, the oil must be enough hot.. yes we can adjust to medium heat when we notice the chicken(e.g) is turning brown. But when we fry 5 pieces of chicken cutlets or more, we need to turn the fire to a higher level. Because the more items we put in, it will reduce the heat of the woke and consume more time to cook the chicken meat. So end up, take more time to cook, more gas usage and can you imagine how much oil already absorb inside the meat?

      Delete
    3. Frankly speaking, my hubby and I, we both family persons. We love our own parents very much. So by hook or by crook, must show our appreciation to hantam all right? Or else they will say " why never eat chicken? eat lar... why never eat the fish BKwan? ear lat... I will say " hor, ok..... die die must wallop the whole fish..

Hmm, if is during festive seasons or any Dai Yat Ji, my mum definitely will buy Siu Yoke for prayers. Actually. my parents know my hubby loves it. Whenever the Dai Yat Ji comes, got lunch or dinner, that plate of Siu Yoke definitely place in front of my hubby. See... so sayang their son in law.... hehehe.

What about my kids? I don't bring my kids to fast food chains always. Sometimes, once in a blue moon, that is ok. Or else, not even once in a month. Even we are crazy over the Happy Meal free gift toys - then I'll let them have some and we share together.

    4. Qing Ming this week, definitely will have roasted pork, chicken lar, duck lar... here it goes again....we will never get rid off oil in our daily intake actually. Perhaps drink ALOT of water is best solution. Plain warm water is enough. Please not cold water ya. Chinese tea, green tea and sorts of tea will help to clean our oily stains in our body eh...

So try to eat healthy lar, life is very fragile. Just like my friend, we all really got a shock knowing that she is gone. We get to know from friends, that got a sudden heart attack. Ya, why so serious? example mar... life is unpredictable so starts a healthy life today. Go exercise, go gym, don't drink and smoke and all this tiny things combines together it really make ALOT of different, if we start a healthy living today.

    5. So SK, what is your papa cooking there... look so black and oily? dark soy sauce siew yoke or dark soy sauce pork chop? Must be delicious right? More oil, more salt and sugar to taste.. Elder people taste bud is getting less sensor.. Same goes to us when we get older.. So that is why they keep saying the food "Mou Mei Tou" - tasteless, "Mm Kau Ham" - not salty enough... "Lok Tor Tit Yim" - add more salt to taste....

But so far, my father didn't complain my mum's cooking. My mum always have many ideas in cooking. So it is not so boring for my papa at home and her grandchildren.

Right now, my father already goes for jogging at lake gardens for months now, eat oats in the morning and sometimes take sandwiches with lots of tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce. So when he gets bored, then he will go for keow teow soup with my mum. Once a while go for a big splurge is ok lar... but not always. I also kenot tahan even my hubby - KFC fried chicken... yumz....

  20. Good day SK~!
How's weather in KL? Got rain? It rained here this morning, stopped now but the sky is still very dark and cloudy~ Good also, we sure miss the rain ;)
Is there still water rationing in KL area? If you read my comment above, Perak is experiencing water rationing from today til 16th!! It's the first time I guess, I mean in Perak. Haih, sad sad.... Just hope at least there'll be some water to use, rather than no water at all.

Ok, when I look at the photo, I was really shocked! Yep, sorry but I do feel it's quite gerli~ Is that how your daddy cook everytime? Hmm, actually cannot blame them also la, elderly likes to eat slightly oily one... Probably cause of the change of taste bud when age is catching up? Just like my parents... The more we advised them don't eat so oily, the more they wanna eat! Haih, elderly are as stubborn as small kids! But luckilt my parents is quite 'afraid' of my brother, haha! My brother is a very health consious guy, he eats very healthily so everytime he comes back from Singapore, he'll 'spot check' the fridge and the cabinet to see if my dad and mum buy anything unhealthy.. And when he is here at home, my mum will cook with very less oil, less meats too!

People might think it's not good la, of a son controls so strictly of what the parents eat... But my parents sure understand his 苦心,it's all for their own goods. Really, elderly should not eat too oily, cause hard to digest.

Hmm, may be you can tell your daddy politely to not cook so oily from now on? Good for the whole family ma!

Oh you always eat the last? Hmm I understand your situation, sometimes cannot say too much, else will hurt their feeling, since your dad cooks with all his heart, must show appreciation.
But erm... Haih, it's so confusing la hor? :p

    1. Using soup to wash away the fats? Haha, it happens to me sometimes too! Though we not sure how much oil can be washed off with this simple trick, but at least 心理上 we will feel less oily already, hehe~!

We eat MIL's cooking 5 days a week, and as you say, since they cook with all their heart we must 'give face' and show appreciation... But what if that particular dish is too oily/unhealthy for me? I'll still eat it but I'll first wash the oil like what you said, or I eat a bit enough, at least this way we are not showing to the elderly directly that we don't like that dish, later when they see it sure they'll feel not good lo! Plus she is my MIL I am not supposed to say so much :p If it's my own mummy at least I can still voice out...

Hehe, not easy being a daughter/son in law eh? :p

    3. wah, good lah, maybe you should get your brother to come home more often so that he can "clean" those fats and unhealthy stuffs away.. haha, but then you also seldom eat with your own parents mah, so probably you can try to ask your hubby to do the same thing on your in-law's fridge!! haha, 好像沒有死過醬!!

but true lah, the elderly already used with their own style of cooking.. old habit follows them for so many years and dies hard lah, so rather we would be the one to 遷就 a bit lah.. somemore they cook for us, should feel grateful also lah.. :)

    6. My aunt always said I'm very hor miah, don't have to do anything, because for her, she needs to cook for her mother in law and father in law from 1 to 10th of every month, according to their traditions, the eldest son wife cook for 1 to 10 then second one on following 10 days, she always felt so sad got to cook for them, because I she got to go to their house to cook and then come back to her house to do cleaning and cooking!!! As for mom also, I always said she's superwoman because she'll get her work done no matter what, cooking, cleaning, ironing......and us really can say very hor miah, don't have to worry what to cook today, the house not clean enough, the clothes not yet dry or anything!!!

  21. SK, I come here 142 comments already. Actually for me the oil you show up there is quite normal. I mean, it depends what sort of oil was used. There are oils that are healthy and good for our heart and entire system. Like olive oil, coconut oil or grapeseed oil. But of course to be taken in moderation and not for drinking. My mum and I use olive oil and some dishes do need slightly more oil or else it won't taste good.

    1. So your dad cooks everyday? It is nice that you get to eat home cooked food for dinner. If you don't want too much oil I guess you just have to dish up your meat/veggie and try to drain off the oil. But for me, I will scoop the oil and put on my rice. Nice!

    2. Especially oily black sauce looks delicious to me. Like the sauce for konlow mee. Aiyo so long haven't eaten konlow mee. My partner and I can eat the one big packet each. I like the wonton and char siew that comes with it. Eh, why am I talking about konlow mee and what not? I think I kena the spamming disease liau. Cabut!

    3. definitely not healthy oil like olive oil or grapeseed oil you mentioned.. so that amount of oil is rather scary to me, haha!! but then, yeah, my dad cooks everyday and it's actually nice to have homecooked dinner once reached home, just have to tilt the plate to drain off the excess oil and say nothing at all, hehe.. well, i would like the black sauce as in the braised pork, OMG, that would be the best thing to go with a bowl of rice alone!! hmmm, start to like spamming here?? :p

    4. Wah, can see Phong Hong starts to comment a few in one thread liao now.. Kekekeke.. Like chatting liao.. Oh yes, certain oil is good for the system.. Now, everyone is hoo-haa-ing about VCO in the baby-mummy forum which I'm joining in FB..

VCO stands for Virgin Coconut Oil.. Not cheap one small bottle.. Now they are talking about serving this to babies after 8 months of age.. Can be mixed into their porridge, rice cereal, or use a syringe and straight pump into their throat.. But they suggest mixing into porridge or any blended cooked food..

They say this VCO will increase baby's immune system.. Good for health, yada yada... Talk until like magic oil like that.. They say if the baby has flu or fever or sore throat or what-nots, just feed VCO, bla bla, and baby will recover faster..

They ask many questions in the forum.. Mostly "my baby is down with flu and sore throat, and I don't want to take him to the pead, any natural remedies?" Then they will give many options and solutions la, and many of them will include "give VCO" in their answer..

So I think VCO is the next in-thing kua..

  26. Hi SK, how's your day today? I had a great day teaching my austistic student cos it seems he is improving and beginning to open up to me and smile more, oops, am I out of the topic, oh today's topic is about oil, some dishes need oil more tasty, my mother also like that, tend to cook more oily food... your father, I mean uncle, cooks with all his heart right? Maybe older generation cooks like that, just like my mother... Maybe you can remind him gently to use less oil...
