20.11.2013 | 有心漢堡

[Volume 8 Issue 11, #1823]
i personally find burgers from roadside stalls probably the heartiest ones i have had, they sure aren't presentable (but how nicely are fast food chain burgers done today??) but boy, they taste good!! last weekend i found them went franchise and marched into selected LRT stations.. excited and didn't see crowd, i gave it a try, afterall it's been a while i last had such a burger.. comes in ala-carte and set meals (with drinks and fries), the burgers and fries were pre-cooked and laid on the heated rack but the extra egg i added-on were done upon ordering.. basically not far from the taste i expected, same generous amount of white pepper for the egg (though without worcestershire sauce or salted-pepper), same generous amount of chili sauce that kept on dripping.. but seemed things were lacking, there's no heaps of generous portion of veggies (lettuce, onions, tomato and cucumber all-together found only in roadside burgers), no generous spread of margarine to make the buns even crispier (and gracefully greasier), no generous splat of mayonnaise to make the sauce drip even more profusely, and the burger was likely laid there for hours.. errr, how do i put it?? trying to upscale to a chain where burgers are neater?? i would still prefer the roadside version that looks messy (but taste heavenly) and you probably end up putting a mess all over your mouth, hands and even clothes!! could be the reason i see no crowd there.. sometimes the junkier the food the better it is, agree?? haha~~ :D

  2. Roadside burgers can be cheap & filling but nowadays, some has gone up a few notch and sell high-pricing (high quality) burgers.

You had that one nearby your house already?

    1. i think the few i saw still at reasonable price.. huh, you mentioned that one nearby my house?? errr, so paiseh i have not tried that yet.. haha!! dunno lah, don't have that urge to even walk up to queue and try~~

    2. That place still doing roaring business kah?

      Good lah...

At least it shows that the stall has quality and the food served are not just fads. Right? Still got time to head there and report on it to us. Hehehe

      Delete
    3. still doing business but where it's roaring business i don't know lah, but i think should have gone less crowd and the queue should be a lot shorter.. i really have not tried that, so cannot comment how their burger taste.. i think i would probably just order the standard single patty lah, too much i will get so jelak~~

      Delete
    4. I think if I go also, I'd just try a single patty.

Seen friends with a tall tower of burger patties served in front of them... I sure hope they finish all of it! @.@

      Delete
    5. probably too ambitious to order that tall tower, one person sure cannot finish (even can finish will also get jelak of burgers for the next few months).. i would rather eat little and savor the taste~~

      Delete
    6. I think la, those who ordered those crazy tall burgers syiok doing it as can show-off at FB or tweet about it, not so much for the makan! Muahaha

    7. I think now price increased already la. Now if not mistake around rm3.50 for a normal burger at the roadside. Last time was around rm2.50 only. at my old house have many burger stalls but now new house tak nampak. kinda miss those burger leh

I also heard nearby ah boy house got one famous roadside punya but the queue up to 1 hour wor. Me also dont think i wanna wait that long crazy man....

oh the 12 inches ones is it? how the heck ti finish la. dont think kaldip can fininsh that big burger la. if too much like that i feel maybe can become jelak. all in moderation should be good enough, dont you think so? How la to share the tower burger. seems very unhygenic if sharing with friends.

ahem ahem...maybe they were paid to post up those burger leh. There was an invite fro a burger restaurant to sample their burger not long ago. I tarak go coz not really into burger

    8. These days the burger seller's friends have been using their Facebook to arouse attention and provided indirect advertising for the burgers with all sorts of out of the world comments on their drooling tastes. Often I found them mere bullshits. Need to trust our own reliable friends to provide honest comments before sinking my teeth into those alien burgers.

Just like movies, it has become one man's meat and another man's poisons! Different rating and tastes have emerged between Ah boy and Anay. Tengok la tu Mortis Rigor. Anay slept and Ah Boy said veli gud movie. LOL

      Delete
    9. Well, for this; it's subjective. We cannot say a person's taste is right or wrong.

We just take the review to form our own la... No?

  3. Cook to order burgers are always better for me.

Still can find a simple burger for RM1.50, egg banjo for less and burger special for RM2.40 nearby the place I work. I'm happy to indulge eating them once in a while. :-)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i think the roadside stalls actually make the best egg banjo, so much nicer than the fast food chain ones.. the veggie and dripping sauce, and the hearty amount of Lee & Perrins and white pepper they put in the egg, so nice!!

nearby the place you work?? got such thing?? somemore only RM2.40?? cannot be lah, nearby your work place sure at least RM12.40, unless you bought from the supermarket, haha!!

      Delete
    2. Nearby lah. Not AT.

You know... near the Klang River there... Ah Boy sure never venture there. ;P

      Delete
    3. oh, you mean on the opposite side around the abdullah hukum apartment area?? really never venture there lah, going there jalan kaki wat.. i go and leave always by vehicle mah, never jalan kaki out of the place before, hehe!! :D

      Delete
    4. Yalah... I know Ah Boy class. Where got the inclination to travel to this kind of place. And travel - horror upon horror; by FOOT!

Lina has no problem going there. She passes this area often. Plus, if wanna go to Bangsar LRT, the fastest option is not by taking a shuttle bus and braving the jam but just walking there. Need to walk up two pedestrian bridge though so it may not be everyone's cup of tea. hehehe

Leave the vehicle once in a while la dei!

Ajak Anay also, go jalan-jalan instead of driving around. Can save money paying for those expensive gym membership. Oh wait! Yours is lifetime. Sudah pay dy. Must use the gym often also lah, like that. What for go out in the hot/rainy weather like orang gila macam Lina. Bwahaha!!!

Anyway, I see a lot of JKR staff (those working at North Tower) heading off to the riverside stall every morning. I guess cheaper breakfast there than going to Makan place, huh?

      Delete
    5. hey, i think i walk not little since i take public transport.. Anay would be the one who goes everywhere with his car!! no wonder he caught a flu, hehe.. well, i have actually thought of walking between MV and Bangsar, but kind of find it's a bit not safe lah.. the pedestrian walkway seems to be narrow and cars are moving so fast.. i takut the safety more than takut to jalan~~ :p

eih, definitely cheaper outside than inside the mall dei.. furthermore inside the mall, makan time sure packed with people!! scary~~

      Delete
    6. RM1.50 burger ah? mana..show me next time. so cheap leh

darn it...the two of u are makking me craving for the burger la. Kaldip gone meeting. later i text him buy burger Muhahahaha

how to walk to bangsar LRT station? no idea on the route. Next time will ask u in details coz bagus jugak coz sometimes the bus very slow la.

      Delete
    7. Just use the pedestrian bridge in front of the North Tower/Gardens Hotel la Meow. Then follow the people walking. Past by the low cost flat. Naik another pedestrian bridge and just walk straight to Bangsar station. Good exercise. Fairly safe too as you are not really alone and can avoid motorcyclists/cars too

      Delete
    8. Eh harlow.... I would rather ditch my car and walk on foot aimlessly like wandering all over China la. I rather smell the rats and drains to find nice burgers to try. Jom kita pergi yeah. I can trust Lina's judgement and taste la cos she Mak Glam and damn fussy for perfections only.

    1. I didn't know now roadside-stall burger have so-called value meals, together with fries and drinks wor.. Lastime when I had it, just ala carte burger only.. They have chicken, beef and special.. Special means additional telur mata..

      Delete
    2. The time when I had it, they had really really generous portion of coleslaw inside the burger. Messy and tasty I would say. And I used to ask them to tambah mayo kat dalam... I can eat two biji sekaligus.. Those days, the portion was huge.. The bun was huge, the daging was tebal, the coleslaw would be banjir type...

But now.... Aikks... There was one time when I passed by G*a*t Hypermarket, at the entrance they will have all sorts of burgers, fries, fried chicken, fishballs, sushi, etc right?
I saw this so called roadside-stall-burger brand, and I grabbed one and paid, and ate in the car.. Errrr, I didnt even finish the patty, and I threw the whole thing away.. It was dry, meat was cut into half, no slaw, and the whole thing looked pathetic..

I guess if I teringin wana have this roadside-stall burger, I would have to personally go to the stall and order from there, instead of buying ready-packed ones from the hypermarket..

      Delete
    3. If you teringin, can always buy the patties from the frozen dept. in hypermarkets.. Then can customize and make your own.. Can add your own cheese, egg, bacon, ham, whatever. Haha. But I guess the roadside-stall ones still taste nicer.. "People cook nicer" or "Eat outside food nicer"... Rite?

      Delete
    4. Can make one's own patties with all fresh ingredients - nothing of those frozen since the Ice Age stuff, thank you very much... Very easy really to make one's own.

      Delete
    5. There are made-to-order shops that can customise our patties. This is great for those who wants freshly made patties with quality ingredients but doesn't want the hassle of having to stock up on ingredients.

After all, some of us might not have the luxury and time to spend so much effort in the kitchen, although we want to.

I personally think such shops are GREAT!

      Gotta pay a premium though.

But quality always comes at a price. Right? ^^

    6. LouizYee loves to read food post?? hmmm, then you must go to this blog http://suituapui.wordpress.com/!! it's a foodie blog with food and only food post everyday, sure you are going to enjoy reading that!!

wah, you sure or not?? you so petite but can wallop two Ramly burger, somemore those last time which are even bigger?? i don't believe you, you must record a video and show us your ability!! hahaha.. aiyoh, true also lah, those from supermarket, you will only find them nice if you are almost famished, they are laid there for hours and surely very dry and tasteless lah.. so you make your own burger so loaded with goodies ah?? haha, how many can you eat?? :D

yeah, even if we can make our own patty, we still need to find time lah, not every has the luxury so some would rather just fork out the money and enjoy what others cook for them.. as long as the food is nice, then the money is well spent.. but sometimes i find cooking at home could be more expensive than dining outside..

And you do not get robbed point blank...and pay so much not for the food you get but to cover the cost of the franchise. Kind of silly, if you ask me, going to all those franchise places - mostly for young kids trying to be trendy and follow the ways of the West.

      Delete
    3. yes, very true!! cheaper and nicer, especially when fast food chains kind of gone more relax on their QC at the back kitchen i guess..

    4. I just saw on Facebook. A friend bought home a lot from McD, so happily sitting down for dinner. Then, next photo - the burger with NO patty inside! No meat!!! I'm sure he was charged the full price for that burger....

Now, what to do? You go back to the shop to complain? They can say you ate the patty already...then want to go back to the outlet and claim the money back.

      Delete
    5. wakakakaka!! that's very funny, no patty at all but just the buns, and probably the veggie and sauce?? muahahahaha.. interesting!! errr, nothing he can do lah, probably can only post the complaint onto McD's facebook.. but still, they will just ask you to fill in their online complaint form - standard reply~~

    6. Latest! At Marshall's Burgers, Penang - flies eggs on the bacon in the burger!!! They shared the photo of that on Facebook! That has got to be the pits!!!! Eyewwwww!!!!!! And they would not admit their fault - said the flies deposited the eggs after the burger had been served.

I was making noise that fillet o fish burger only have half slice of cheese . the manager called me back say sorry coz normal fillet o fish only have half cheese. if double baru have full slice of cheese. wah last time if i remember it was full slice leh. cham moe

I think if your friend wanna complain he/she can write to McD la, They do respond to comment.

I shot the one in amcorp mall before mah. the manager also call me up to apologise and want to give refund but i malas go take

    9. I agree that we often paid so much money for simple burgers and the money actually went to feed their franchise and advertising plus big overhead costs. We should be wiser now that the GST will be implemented soon and everything else will go up except our salaries!!! What the hell man?? Someday I might end up eating just Burger Kosong will egg-flies inside!! Muahahahahaha

    3. yeah, be it sociology, culture, history or even personal story.. i guess those probably are a lot more interesting than just describing the food that masuk our tumm?? well, at least i think so.. and you are right, that is why we often miss things that we have missed or never have had the chance to get them easily..

  9. I agree that roadside burgers have generous fillings plus they could be unhygienic sometimes, depending on the chef seller himself. I have seen some using recycled oil like my car;s engine oil colour to fry the patty meat. Those sellers who used the franchise meat for the burgers, seems to loose its quality compared to some sellers who actually made their own patty meat. I am sure you have heard of the famous POWER BURGER which is sold in my area. That seller has got many female fans who are so loyal and miang over him. They would pose banyak photos with him in his singlets showing off his muscles & good looks. They would post into facebook & openly sound flirtatious with his yummy muscles & not burgers!! Adoi!! New way of luring clients!!

I might check it out this stall and consider blogging about this famous seller whom not-so-famous actresses also frequented his stall.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Beware of roadside-stalls which sell fried stuffs tho'.. Especially fried lekor.. I heard they use recycle oil over and over again, and just before the lekor is done, they throw in a bunch of straws (yes, straws), to make it crunchy...
The straws will melt into the oil, and stick onto the lekor's, and you guys will chomp chomp chomp and say "wah, hou hou sik ahh" !!!!!

      Delete
    2. oh really?? i have not heard of that POWER BURGER before.. in fact that Burger Kaw Kaw just 5 minutes walk away from my house was so famous and the queue was so long, yet i have not tried it.. ulu Thambee~~

errr, when feel like eating those roadside food, i will not think that much about the hygiene issue lah.. just hantam only, because it's some once in a bluemoon thing just to satisfy that sudden craving, i think should be alright..

      Delete
    3. I agree with SK.

When one choose to eat at roadside, don;t think so much about hygienic issues because for sure it's suspect one. :P

The option is to boycott or avoid them. But not so easy leh...

      Delete
    4. yes, why think of the unnecessary?? if we want to go for it, just go for it and care less.. or perhaps care later lah.. what's more important is the thing right in front of us.. hahahaha!! :D

      Delete
    5. I have this simple thinking.

      Worry about hygiene?

Sendiri masak and sendiri house. No need to complain and look down on others.

Don't like or have issues at certain eateries, just boycott. (Why I never boycott K*C or M*D, beats me!)

      Delete
    6. Anay...this just shows that sex sells. You have been advertising industry should know this la :p

wei...lekor or pisang goreng ah? The one is pasal pisang goreng la. Lekor no need to make more crunchy la.

Never heard of power burger too. only heard of the Ramli burger. I like ramli burger la., They reused the oil la> I thought the burget they just put plantan then fry it . Got put oil meh? tak perasan la

ahem ahem...now me converted...instead of Mcd, i find that Burger King also quite good leh. they having this meal set offer RM5 for a burger plus fries and drinks . The burger taste quite good

      Delete
    7. I agree that Burger King's Burgers are good compared to all the fast food chains in the whole country. Their bun size larger with thicker meat that looks like home made sizes without scooping from the mould. The fries are thick cuts and yummilicious too. Sadly their sales cannot compare with McD which also top the number of franchise outlets throughout the country la. Burger King also seldom place ads!

  13. I think there are too many roadside burger stalls being sprouted all over Klang Valley now. I would say some are really as good as you have tried and some should close shop since they attracted no customers! The poor seller & his assistant could be seen strumming their guitars and sang mournful songs waiting for customers.

    1. There are also so many franchise burger outlets here in Klang Valley which attracts many folks from the East Coasts. My friend from Kuching would always pack his suitcase with so many Burger Kings to bring home for his family. He boasted happily that those burgers have the thickest meat and fillings. Hmmmmmmnn..

      Delete
    2. I still think the better ones are from Carls Jnr which have pricey menus but excellent burgers that are cooked to almost perfection. I can see what makes them stand out differently from others is the meat marinated with delicious herbs and smeared with yummy sauces!!

      Delete
    3. I never attempted to make my own burgers and should consider giving it a try! Where to find good recipes to marinate the meat instead of buying ready made ones??

      Delete
    4. WHen Anay talk about East Coast, I thought he's talking about Pahang, Kelantan or Terengganu.

      Kuching, Sarawak rupanya. ;)

    5. For me, Burger King is slightly better than McD. For the same range of price.

Carl's Jr already like premium, just cost a bit less than American chain restaurant; but I also love Carl's Jr.

But cannot afford to go there eat often.

Once a month to satiate the burger craving enough la...

Funnily enough, if I go to TGIF, Tony Roma's or Chilis, I will not ever order burgers. Makan steak or ribs lagi best. ;)

      Delete
    6. yeah, whenever it comes to food, surely there are lots of competitions around and only the best could survive.. i don't frequent Carl's Jr because the price is too much above what i could afford, it's as good as going to some restaurants already.. and for the lower range chains, surely McD and BK but i personally think BK burger is actually better.. Mak Glam give me five~~

hoi, Sabah & Sarawak are East Malaysia and not East Coast lah.. East Cost refers to Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu dei~~ let the Sibu Mayor see this and you'd get a lesson from him!! :D

    7. at my old house there were at least 405 stall sellig burger leh. It really have to depend on the person that make the burger. some very stingy with the ingredient punya. just a few slices of oinion only.

Burger king from east coast meh? why need to tapau from there. Here also have Burger king mah

yeah agree with lina that carl jr higher price but you get what u paid for la

I have ordered burger before la in Chilis that one was free kids burger. even that the portion was so big! OMKucing....j also cant finish leh. so we :helped" him to finish it lo :p

    8. Tony Roma's burger also not bad.

Wei you all.... No one wants to wallop the RM118 ribs on promotion kah? Cheaper than the usual RM148 wor. :)

      Delete
    9. Oh I have never tried Tony Romas burgers. That one is my most favourite makan and lepak outlet where the food and services is always double thumbs up!! I must try it someday and I believe the price won't come cheap either.

Muahahahahaha how on earth could I call Sabah & Sarwak as East Coasts? Phiak my head.

      Delete
  14. The wrapper in your picture looks familiar. Yeah, what makes the burger yummy could be in part a combo of the mayo and chili sauce which often drip down from the rich bed of lettuce, tomato, cucumber and onion rings. Could be messy eating it by no doubt yummy!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi-5!

      I skip them too.

Although I may need to put them on tasteless burger. But like McD, there's already sauces in the burger so no need put extra.

I don't ask for sauce for my Subway sandwiches too. ^^

      Delete
    2. i won't intentionally skip all the sauces but just eat as it is lah, won't also add in additional chili sauce of ketchup like most people do.. and for Subway, err, i will usually ask for two (the most) types of sauce.. unlike some, they will want EVERY available sauce, all mixed into "banjir"~~ :D

      Delete
    3. I wont ask them to skip the sauce la. but will ask them to put less. coz i dont like my burger soggy. banjir but not soggy.

      Delete
  16. They're cheaper and a whole lot nicer, no doubt. We've one stall here selling one for RM2.00 only...but they use those frozen patties.

Somebody told me of one stall here where they make their own patties but I've yet to go and check it out - not really into burgers and I can easily make my own patties - just as nice or even nicer.

    ReplyDelete

    1. errr, all burgers you can get outside are cooked with frozen patties right?? unless you are at some specialty restaurant or anywhere that made their own patties.. wow, you must find out that stall that make their own patties and show us the burger!! that sounds interesting..

    5. yeah, if you really go and find the roadside burger stalls, you probably can find a handful of them, but not all are nice.. hahaha, yeah!! cutting into half and put more sauce in between!! that's what i say about the hearty burger.. they would do every little thing to make the burger taste heavenly, that's what i like about them!!

      Delete
    6. If roadside stall it is unavoidable to have lalat. so we have to see la how they store the parries and the vege and oinions. if can see got lalat on it then can write off la. otherwise can take a chance lor

    2. I love those Ramly burgers also and don't mind having that once a while, actually sometimes I'll crave for that instead of those burgers from McD/Burger King.
Erm at least they are cheaper, and more variety to choose from! Of course the cons is have to wait slightly longer la, unlike those at the fast food chains.

      Delete
    3. And speaking of Ramly burger, I like ayam special. Top with lots of black pepper sauce and soy sauce, yumz~ Though I know too much sauce is not good for our health la!
But since I am not having it very often, so I reckon it's totally ok! ;))

    4. Ok I think I better don't comment anymore, if not I'll get really hungry! (haven't had my proper lunch yet)
Well may be I should skip my dinner tonight as well, and go to the nearest Ramly stall and get a ayam special burger! Wakakaka~

    5. hahaha, of course i have to be detailed with the ingredients!! because they seem to be so standard for all the roadside burgers, and of which we cannot find in fast food chains burgers.. have a thought, i think you won't find lettuce and cucumber and tomato and onion, plus chili and tomato sauce and mayonnaise all together in a single burger in fast food chain right?? haha~~

i also always go for the ayam special, so nice lah.. but i won't ask for black pepper sauce, i cannot take too spicy.. aiyoh, replying comments here also make me feel hungry and suddenly having a craving for the ayam special also~~ :D

    1. Whenever I buy it. I will stand there watching them making the burgers. I love to order benjo style where only egg in the burger or ayam special where they will make an omelette to wrap over the burger patty. Now, there is a Malay stall at night making burgers all kind of it from chicken, beef and even fish. What is so special with fish burgers, they will eventually put a slice of fish fillet with the same side ingredients just like burger one. Taste wise but I still prefer the chicken burger. If I want to go for fish I love Fillet O fish the most.

    2. When I was staying in the Uni hostel. Our canteen has a burger stall. That is one special ingredient they put which make their burger so special to eat. I can say almost every weekend we never miss it. Definitely will go yum char with my Uni frens and having burger for supper. Great food with great friends. Come back to the special ingredient they put is green apple slices insteand of cucumber. They are very generous in putting lots of ingredients. They even make coleslaw instead with just plan mayo on it. Maggie Worcestershire sauce and pepper that makes the patty even taste better. Imagine...that only cost us RM3 the most if to compare with other fast food chains.

wah, what special ingredient that burger stall in your uni used?? sounds nice woh, and only RM3 for a ayam special with coleslaw soemore?? cheap.. no wonder you must have it every weekend, haha~~ :D
