[Volume 8 Issue 9, #1787]
when it comes to nice congee, many would have thought of H-Kee (HK), but for me i definitely prefer Loa Yau Kee (LYK) which is a few streets away.. the service has greatly improved in recent years, waiters are more polite and responsive, hence i have been patronizing this roadside stall quite often.. this is my favorite, nine out of ten times i would be ordering this plain congee with chicken (breast)..
i like LYK's congee because i find the congee itself is of the consistency i like, not too thick and not too watery, as compared to the one from HK that i found too gluey for my liking.. besides, the congee was boiled in chicken stock hence the plain congee itself is already flavorful enough..
most of the time i will order a portion of chicken (breast) to go with my porridge, drizzled with special soy sauce and dip with homemade chili sauce, needless to elaborate more but by just looking at the photo you know how delicious it is, hehe!! of course besides chicken porridge, they also have other choices, for instance the popular pork congee and fish sashimi congee.. each bowl of porridge is sold at RM5, additional chicken at RM4.50 per portion and cripsy pork intestines at RM3 per portion, compared to a bowl at RM4 ten years ago, i find the price very reasonable..
okay, you may want to ask where is this LYK?? they start business at 5pm and if the business is good, you will see them preparing to close near 8pm, so it's better to be early!! and oh, remember they are close on sundays and public holidays, just avoid thinking of them on those days.. :)
if you are my regular reader, did you notice this post today is a little different, not actually my usual style?? it was just a sudden thought for to use this common style to blog about food, and to write as if i am a gastronome!! haha.. so how do you think i pass or fail?? :D

    2. Is this the same one that used to be near Bangkok Bank or some bank? Strange that I never knew its name.

I usually order fish porridge and plate of chicken. Drumsticks are my regular order - skin and all. :D

Sometimes I go for the pork trotters next stall though their customer service leaves much to be desired. Sigh.

Later into the night, there is a prawn mee stall further down the road which has the best prawn mee I've ever tasted. It was so good I remember I ordered a second bowl the last time I was there. Probably because the portion was not enough for a single helping or I was extra hungry. Plus the sambal was super-delicious.

I like your last picture. Nice!

And oh, Happy Malaysia Day too!

    4. Besides this porridge, I also like Teochew porridge and for this one I usually go to Pudu.

Frankly, outside porridge is bad for people who are prone to wind attacks because the porridge sold outside is being stirred and stirred and that causes excessive wind.

When I cook porridge, I do not stir it but gently move it around. Another tip to prevent wind buildup is never to let your porridge become cold as that too causes wind to build up. What I do is to leave the rice-cooker on, even throughout the night. That way, the porridge is constantly piping hot, no chance to becoming cold.

      Just my two cents.

(You think I could convert this long-winded comment into a blog post? haha..)

    5. Lol....can write blog post la ...later sk will have co-author here specialise in best way of cooking.

Those chicken or any meat porridge I will add julienne (is that the correct term?) Ginger and cook together. My friend ate say taste weird coz her home town cook with meat only. But I liie the taste of the ginger in the porridge la. Maybe it will help the wind.

But usually I seldom keep porridge overnight.

      Delete
    6. Oh no, I didn't mean for it to be a post here but rather on my own blog. Just saying only..

Julienne it is. Ginger is a must for me when I'm cooking meat porridge. Not only does it give a good flavor and aroma, it removes the wind, you are right.

    7. wow, HS is definitely excited about porridge huh?? i can see that from her comments she is such an expert when it comes to eating porridge!! haha, and sure, your comments are good enough to become an individual post by itself, maybe you want to copy & paste (perhaps amend a little) and make it into your post tomorrow?? that "wind" thing is rather informative and you should share that with us..

oh yes, exactly the one you mentioned!! LYK has moved over to the front of the Soong Kee Beef Noodles and i think they kind of JV since we can sit inside the restaurant and order porridge.. yes, that pork soup stall is still there but since i don't eat the organs i never patronized that.. the prawn noodles is no longer there, i used to have that and you are right, too small a portion i think i need two bowls!! haha, it was nice..

oh, i think it's nice to have julienne ginger with porridge.. they don't give ginger with the chicken but they do have for the fish porridge to get rid of the fishy smell..

    8. The canteen in my secondary school sells porridge too. The lady put julienne ginger and peanuts into the porridge. really nice. I never thought I would say this but I missed her porridge LOL

    2. mana aku tau...coz now all english so high standard leh....thought porrdige or congee could be refering to certain texture of the thing...maybe more watery or what ...hence i can never been a full fledge food blogger. Die die will use words like "yummy" or delicious. Other words dont know how to use.

which shop la in paramount ....so big area leh

    3. congee is rice porridge if you really want to find the exact difference lah.. porridge can be other than rice like oat.. so porridge is actually the general term, while congee is specifically the chinese rice porridge i guess..

oh, those with lots of things already inside are Hakka style?? i like those also lah.. and those plain one with lots of dishes to go with, which is Teochew style, i also like.. this type of flavored congee is Cantonese style..

      Delete
    4. Oooh that is the difference ah. I guess mine shuld be called congee la. Not porridge. Never had other ingredient like oat etc put and cook as porridge before. Biasa with rice already

Eh! Wait a minute... I am confused now...... I came to SK Thambee's blog post but this looks like STP's post. Oh I came into wrong place! This post is talking about food yet it is not STP''s post. Where's Ah Boy's post http://sk0617.blogspot.com/???

    1. I am at the correct place!

Ah Boy is talking about porridge and that is my favourite old man's food. It is delicious when we throw in the right ingredients to make the congee world class! I prefer fish meat with lots of celery and soya sauce & shreds of dried oysters... Fulamak! Heavenly nice wor!

      Delete
    2. Sometimes I won't mind eating the porridge with chicken breasts but I had some bad experience where the pong smell of the chicken breasts were filthy as if it missed the morning bath. Bluek!

I just learnt from my wife that a world class chef reported about meat that smells when the cooks didn't wash them thoroughly with hot water to remove the toxins in the lymph areas of the meat. That's why it smells like dead corpse.

      Delete
    3. Aiyoh Anay,
Just after SK managed to get me drooling over congee, you go and explain in length about smelly chicken.

Now I lost my appetite already! Muahaha!!!

    6. yea some chicken smells...maybe that is why some will boil it in a pot of water with spring onions and ginger slices. That will get rid of the smells....to some extend la...if the meat rotten already that one no cure liao la.

been to some hypermarket...went to meat section...adoi...the chicken meat rotten already still they display...some part can see bit grayish/green.

i am not a rice person so naturally i am also not a fans of porridge but i surely have no problem with it.. any types lah, Hakka Cantonese Teochew, as long as delicious i don't really care, just makan, haha!!

oh, this chicken from LYK tastes very nice and no weird smell lah.. old style stalls sure knows how to handle their chicken, and i don't think they use frozen chicken?? wow, this Meow has super brain power!! she remembers Ah Boy doesn't like dried oysters, and she knows i would like the porridge with abalone slices!! haha.. she's a worm in my stomach~~

      Delete
    9. Muhahahahahaha....abalone me cannot afford....abalone mushroom can or not :p

haha, i bet you usually go to shopping malls or more established restaurants when you are in KL, because probably you are meeting up with friends and rarely will think of this roadside stall, haha!! anyway, worth a try if you really have the chance.. they do have "yao char guai" as extra sides you can order, but i think so-so only, their specialty is chicken and "char cheong".. :)
