my two nephews have been playing chinese chess quite often recently, won't last long though i would guess.. and they asked me to play with them, but i really can't give much help but can only ask them to look for their grandpa, because i really do not know how to play that, haha!! a friend knew i do not know chinese chess and was shocked, because i graduated from a chinese school and am expected to know this game.. though my school required us to study chinese history and literature in very ancient language, we were never required to know how to play chinese chess.. i actually do not have much interest in chess, besides lower level ones like othello/ animal chess/ snake & ladders (do you consider this a chess??), i really have no idea how all the others work.. furthermore we had a video game set at home, of course i would choose the latter right?? compare to the mind-cracking chess, why not the more exciting and thrilling video games right?? oh, i actually played with my mom together, don't ever think you could bully this auntie, she was damn good in video games i tell you, probably because she practiced a lot while i was in school, haha!! hence, don't blame kids nowadays for keeping their phones or tablets with them all the time, we adults (as well as the younger us) are quite the same too.. just look around, in the street and in eateries, nine out of ten are actually playing with the gadget on their hands right?? wait, i am supposed to talk about chinese chess today but why i ended up with phones and tablets?? well, whatever, haha~~ :D

    2. I thought playing chess is about strategy and planning and not about scheming & plotting. So negative!

      tsk tsk

So, I guess a decent and nice guy doesn't think out of the box, then?

    3. hahaha, well different people use different term and view things differently lah.. i do not know chess, so not going to comment about whether it's strategy & planning or scheming & plotting~~ :p

    2. Yeah seen the cheeky oops Chek-ki cards before but no interest to pick up the game.

    4. oh, i have no idea what are those colorful cards with chinese characters, and Chek-ki?? maybe i've not even seen them before, haha.. my mom use to play poker cards but later when we had video games at home, she was good in almost every game in there~~ :D

    5. Thambee dei, I have googled again this Cheki Card games for your knowledge! http://a_pollett.tripod.com/cards39.htm
It was very popular all over China and Malaya during the war as it was easy to carry and gamble among friends while Chinese Chess is just a 2 player game which you cannot gamble much. The Chinese chess game may take up to 15 - 30 mins per game!!! How boring!

      Delete
    6. oh, i vet through that website and that is called Cheki?? i remember i've seen that before somewhere, but don't really know how to play.. hmmm, maybe i have seen that on TV most probably..

  3. Indeed I am surprised that you don't play the game. But then again, to each his own.

LOL at what you said about your nephews. Funnily, games for kids usually are seasonal.

    5. Yeah why must it be old men playing and not old aunties playing. It makes me wonder too!

The funny thing is that I also saw many old Chinese folks played this at the Chinese Pavillion Gardens at the Chinatown in Singapore and San Francisco. It makes me wonder if it has to do with the ambiance to create the mood for this game,

I also saw folks playing the black and white round tiles in China. I don't know what they call this ancient games. They seem like Othello to me....

    6. Aha!... I found it after google a bit. It is called "Go" game and I have the link here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_%28game%29
I will try to read the rules so that next time I can play with the folks in Chengdu. That would be fun to sip hot tea in winter there.

    7. because probably only the elderly people have more time to spend and that they are indeed more patient than the younger generations, that's why we have an impression that the Chinese Chess is for the old aunties and uncles?? haha.. hmmm, the black and white one is similar to orthello but instead of changing the color of the chess by placing yours at the ends of the line, the chinese one needs to make a complete loop.. is that true??

      Delete
  5. I definitely won't be very good in it. My bothers who were chinese educated used to play this chess when we were still schooling. So I joined in the fun by memorizing the Chinese characters. It was fun anyway.

    2. I love my wife so much that I do not want to play any games with her that could mean defeating her! I won't even play scrabble or chess with her as I have no heart to win & conquer. How silly!
So we just play iPad games alone and help each other.

      Delete
    3. wakakakaka.. but why are you thinking this way, to me, i think playing games can actually do a good bonding between the two.. both holding own's iPad and play alone isn't good at all.. perhaps you want to find games that collaborates you both rather than make you into opponents..

  6. Hello Thambee! What a shame that you are hopeless in Chinese Chess! I am shocked actually but i forgive you as you are an Indian kid anyway!

Anay is a banana but expert in Chinese Chess and mahjong! I actually love to play Chinese Chess more than English chess! The steps might be similar but I feel more talented in Chinese chess.

    2. Vanakum! Yalor quite surprising to know that too. We bananaz are sometimes more 'Chinese' than most mangoes (Chinese educated). Played Chinese chess and learned the abacus when young. Can only know the simple addition using abacus.

Eh Thambee, you sure no kidding that you dunno how to play English Chess!!! KNN phiak your head!

I always play Mahjong tiles when I am cycling in the gym. It kills time very fast!! I set 200-300 calories and my mind just focus on the mahjong while my calories burned. Win-Win situation!

If we scold kids for being glued to the screen playing computer games, we have to look at ourselves and our behaviour too.

  10. If or when we say that someone is suppose to do/know/act a certain way because of their education level or something, aren't we typecasting?

I try to avoid comments like that because I do not want to stereotype people. Just like I don't want people to think so of me too.

    2. Well, a bigger size reporter told me I'm big size.

Bukit Jalil run is Brooks Half Marathon Meow.

Anyway, runners must realise their own fitness also. If not fit or have history of heart problem, then have to be careful. This year got runner who died during the Brooks Run. Runners and family will blame organiser when anything bad happen.

It is true that many people could not accept the habits of certain personality. I am a good example here. Many people used to get a shock to see me smoking or playing mahjong. They simply pointed out that I totally do not have those looks!!! What looks!!! Smoker's face or Gambler's hands??? I am wondering now.

    5. i think i am both big size and big bones, my weight is on the heavier side all these while i would say.. but i was truly amused by that comment by STP, it's just making the same joke as the bigger sized reporter commenting on our Mak Glam.. well, i guess just be happy and i am pretty sure our Mak Glam has very high EQ to just laugh away with that crazy reporter.. :p
