Time Difference: How Sensitive Are You??
World Time Zone Time Difference
for the past half a month, i have been writing about my recent Bangkok trip, i hope i did not bore you.. today, I wish to have a discussion topic post for a change, yet still related to travel long, let's talk about time difference.. in many of my trips, i have come across people who are very "firm" towards time difference.. "firm" in the sense that they stick strongly to the home time but are never sensitive to the local time at where they currently are, how interesting..
Type 1
Type 2
Conclusion
the first type, who always insist to refer to their home time whenever they talk about time, or when someone tells a local time, they naturally want to ask "so, that is what time back home??".. i find this rather peculiar, being at a different place away from home, it make sense to use the local time right?? why still need to bother what time it is at home?? unless we plan to connect to somebody at home, then it's a different story.. i would find it confusing to always remember two different times, haha!! what's more funny is that, the watches still show the home time, and whenever there’s a need to know the time, there’s a need to do some calculations first.. as for me, i always tune my watch according to the destination time once i board the flight..

    3. For me ahh, I’m very lazy and can’t be bothered type.. “Chu dou mai lei jau sik” (Cook and serve in front of me, I’ll eat).. So leh, I MAY be type 1, but NOT type 2 lor.. Sometimes cannot control, will ask what’s the time in Msia, coz wana call back to the kids perhaps? But of coz will be alert and remember follow local time, not our own time.. But sometimes need to know our own time, coz need to tell family members what time reach airport ma, kan..

    4. When I click conclusion ahh, I was laughing by myself la.. Behtahan.. OMG, what are you talking about, hehe.. I know what am I talking today la, but I don’t have so much related things to talk about, coz I seldom travel.. Time difference paling maximum pun 2 hours only..

    5. Your sons are growing up very fast now. You can start planning your holiday travels with them. Even short visits to Cameron Highlands and Pulau Langkawi would be fun & near. You need to pamper yourself with hubby and travel further like to Japan or Australia without the kids.

  2. Wahaha, I was expecting what came out in the conclusion...that's very funny la!! I'm Type 1 person just adjust the watch when landed, very easy ba! I guess maybe I'm a very lazy person, don't like to think so much, like things get done when I need it, don't really like to wait until I really want to see the time then only slowly calculate lo....or maybe this person is very good in calculation then is their like lo...

    2. yah, I will straight away adjust the time on my watch lah.. if not later it will be me myself who is confused of the time only, haha!!

    3. hahaha... I will add the new location to my phone and use the local time but will keep refering to the home time. Watch ? I guess I will put it aside...muahahah..

    4. my watch got world time function, so when i go travel, just need to press a few buttons to show the local time.. phone will adjust by itself automatically..

    5. TM ~ Aiyo, but can't spam too much, then don't need to work meh...hahaha! (I always thought of that, so only squeeze a little bit of time to spam, if not really the work can't finish then need OT...>.<)

SK ~ Coz your watch is digital watch or analog? If analog, your watch is so canggih leh? It can detect itself...or just I'm too outdated, hahaha...

    6. i will wear my G-Shock when i go travelling lah.. it won't automatically adjust by itself lah, but already stored a few local time of famous cities inside, i still need to press some buttons to show the local time of the city (or the nearest one) where i am at lor.. only my phone will auto synch to local time once connected to internet :p

    1. Usually, when i go to another country, i will follow the other country timing, and not refer to Singapore timing...

      Delete
    2. The best places to visit is Singapore and China where the TIME in both countries are the same. China is so huge yet they insist that the whole country should stick to same time. Thailand is just next door and right above us but the have to choose to be one hour slower. It makes no sense to me.

      Delete
    3. When I was in Krabi, I didn't adjust my watch to the local Krabi time because the time difference is very minor only so the watch still shows SG time

    4. have to make this post a bit more fun with minions, else it will be too boring..

yeah, I will adjust my watch right away when boarded the plane.. but then for the recent years, I have been traveling to places with no time difference, or the most 1 hour only, so it has not been too much an issue :p

      Delete
  4. I alway tune my time to the destination time once I'm on board the plane. That helps a lot. Usually the flight adjust themselves to the destination time too.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It needs some time to readjust for some people. As for me, I adjust myself immediately.

      Delete
    2. I would do the same and change the time while on board the planes. I think our mobile smart phone is the best as they will be automatically changed to suit our locations.

      Delete
    3. Agree with TM, smart phone indeed very smart

      Delete
    4. Yeah, the new time will be handy especially for makan time...muahahaha.... That will managed our expectation when they will served lunch....

      Delete
    5. yeah, as soon as the pilot announce the local time at destination, I will adjust my watch already.. and so good that Wenn has no problem with the time difference and can adapt the timing immediately.. :)

      Delete
  5. But whenever I want to make a call back home, I will make sure it's waking hour back home. And I always tell my people not to call me when it's sleeping time at my destination place.

    1. Once someone called me in the middle of the night and thus it interrupted my sleep. Now I will always mute my phone whenever I sleep at my holiday places.

    2. Good practice, me too, will mute my phone whenever I sleep, whenever I am, I am a light sleeper, I dislike disturbance...

      Delete
    3. yeah, it is indeed a courtesy to consider the time difference if you are going to call someone at a different time zone.. I would hate ppl to call in the midnight..

      Delete
    4. aiyo...wenn...you should put your phone to aeroplane mode or buy a local sim card with data. With that, nobody will disturb you. Furthermore, roaming is not cheap.

Other than that okay lo. You have friends that die die also wanna follow malaysian time ka when travelling. Like that very susah leh.

No wonder another friend said she preferred to travel alone than travel in group or with few peoples coz very susah wanna "chau" (follow/give) people. Some die die wanna sleep in the hotel wasting day light time.

  11. The rest of the time I won't bother la . Just follow local time.

As for type 2. I think sometimes it applies to those who are taking medication la.Sometimes some people who have certain serious illness have to take their medicine at certain time....so no choice....like diabetes have to jab jab insulin and stuffs like that

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But i think you don;t mean those type of people la.

generally it would be much more sensible and relaxing to follow local time

though sometimes ahem ahem...some toilet functions ones can't help if the body insisted on doing some kind of business at ungodly hours coz already been doing that for many years mah. will need some time to adjust the body clock lor

      Delete
    2. Oh ya you got a point Mamarazzi, if taking medication then must follow the time gap. If traveling then must be cautious, some medication cannot skip/miss one.

      Delete
    3. errr, I think it would be the gap between that is more of a concern than the exact timing?? but true also lah, let's say 8am taken medicine and 4 hours later must take again, but then flying to a place which is 8 hours apart, can be confusing hor?? haha.. like that it's best to do the scheduling before hand using local time, just like the flight schedule, they also using local time mah.. :)

      Delete
    4. Really, can be very confusing. And may be can forget also, cause already excited going on vacation, yet blur on the different time zone and all, so have to calculate the time and think when to take the medications.

      Delete
  12. That is the most relevant conclusion of a blog post, ever! XD

Normally if you travel to someplace with different time zone for an extended period of time, like it or not the body will adjust the biological clock to 日出而作 日落而息 (sort of) automatically. Of course that also includes meal times. To refuse to adapt is to fight against nature, first few days you might enjoy it as your body has not adapted, but after a few days you will probably end up suffering instead.

  14. Good afternoon bloggers! I have lost track of my time today as I have been busy right up to my neck. To add on the misery, I am down with bad flu all of a sudden.

TYPE 1: I agree with SK of peculiar beings who keep checking the time when they are away from home. This happened to me when i went to live in US. Everyday my head would do a quick mental check on the time in Malaysia as I wanted to keep track of my dear parent's breakfast, lunch, tea time, dinner and social outings. I would also need to see the best time to call them from there as the time zone is so opposite. That was before the mobile phone was invented and I often came out of my classrooms to use the coin pay phones to call my mother, almost everyday!

I was never confused over the time as it was 12 hours behind, so it was quick and easy to check & keep track. What about the flying pilots and the whole crew, they carry 2 watches all the time as told by some stewardess.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. TYPE 2: Hmmmn... this is a good question to ponder over about the biological clocks. I am not too sure about these time changes and jet lag occurrence as it has not taken place in my life after leaving US. That was a suffering period for me to adjust back. It took me a few weeks to be precise and I had to shower like 5 times daily as the weather was too hot.

    2. Conclusion: It was so farnee!!! I laughed at the 2 Minions who resembled Anay and Thambee laughing during the teh tarek sessions.

      Delete
    3. I can't help but to agree with you that that 2 Minions resembled Anay and Thambee. One tall and one short, kekekeke!

By the way, when I went traveling with Jin Jin, I didn't need to know about time. I didn't need to wear watch at all. Jin Jin was my clock and alarm. He would lead me to do the right thing at the right time.

I may encounter problem soon this year end, as I am going to somewhere with my two girls only. Jin Jin is not following this time. I may lost my direction and alarm during the trip. I have to rely on myself. Phewww!

      Delete
    4. I should worry for nothing, I am going to a country which has the same time as Malaysia, yeah!

      Delete
    5. I will always follow the situation at where I currently am lah, it will be difficult to have to take care of so many situations.. just live life at the present, I mean both time and place.. but nowadays with smartphones we can always have the time automatically adjusted to the local time, and watches also come with the features of showing dual time.. we just need a tap or a press on the device and we can find out the local time and the time at home on our fingertips.. don't even have to calculate like we used to.. it's all so convenient!! :)

      Delete
  15. hahaha... I am the Type 1 person. No matter what, I will follow the local time. Well, its easier to adjust our time , especially meal times. In Bangkok, its 1 hour later which means you ate 1 hour late, from 1pm to 2pm , let's say. I am sure your body will start 'drumming' by then and although you can try ot adjust your biological clock, it may help to get some light food to prevent gastric problems.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But if just a short difference, then should not be a big problem la!

      Delete
    2. yalah, it make sense to follow local time than to refer back to the home time right?? just be at the present.. but then just an hour difference is not much an issue also..

      Delete
    3. Not really, an our different meant a lot to lunch time!! I remember whenI was Phuket, my stomach was growling but the tour guide keep stressing that lunch will be in an hour time... alamak... I ended up munching on tidbits...muahahahaha...

      Delete
    4. hahaha, i think the tour guide was helping you adjust to the local time lah.. :p

      Delete
  16. Of course, if I am going to stay at that place for a long while, then I will adjust my watch. Anyway, with our smartphones, it can show all the world times, so it's actually no need to adjust here and there. Just put away your watch for while unless you are at the country for a very long time or you want to impress the gorgeous ladies with the latest Apek Rolek gold watch... muahahahha...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I also agree with Chris, short trip and the time different is just one or two hours, I won't adjust my watch as well. Now, we can check at the smartphone, it is even better.

      Delete
    2. I will adjust my watch anyway, I am a very blur person, better don't confuse myself, haha xD And actually I lazy to count the time difference also la!
Some smartphone will auto adjust the time zone one...

      Delete
    3. no worries for smartphones as they automatically adjust to the local time.. as for my watch it had a list of world time and I can just select to show the right one.. now it's also easy and convenient to check home time from our phones or watches also.. technology!! :)

      Delete
    4. It depends if you are using Android or iphone. In Android, the time widget will auto adjust based on the location. In Iphone, you have to select the location.
Anyway, I haven't used an iphone to go overseas, not sure if my theory is right...hahaha... But my samsung phones widget really adjust based on location but need data plan.

      Delete
    5. it depends on your settings lah.. whether you want to automatically adjust or manually adjust your phone time to the local time.. iPhone has this flexibility, but of course i set it to automatically update for convenience..

      Delete
  17. It's still convenient to follow local time for biological reasons as I mentioned on food just now. Well, it also affects our sleep, working time, pang sai time and what so ever time...hahaha....

However, this is likelyfor the first or second day at a different time zone while I will also try to adapt to the new time zone after that. (And, re-adapt back later when home...)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it make more sense to follow the local time because there is where we present.. it surely is not a good thing to keep taking care of something just virtual, like the home in your heart?? I mean at least this is what I bother.. :)

      Delete
    2. yeah, agreed with you. It's better to follow the local time and try to adjust to the local time too. It will be difficult for the first few days but after that, it should be ok.

      Delete
    3. yeah.. because it will be quite weird if we are still referring to a time in another place..

      Delete
  18. Type 2 is a bit over-kill la.. Cannot die die must adapt to the local time for everything. Maybe can try to adjust a bit like if you are hungry or tired , go and take a light snack or nap if it's 'time's up'. Else, I agreed with you to try to adjust to the local time.

I think type 2 applies to folks who seldom travel unlike you. Thus, they take this as a routine or discipline to follow in order to keep themselves well. But I am aure after a few days, they will get used to it and started to adjust.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think just do what you can do best lah, don't force yourself too but I think slowly our body will also start to adjust and adapt.. take it easy, life isn't that long for so many worries also :p

      Delete
    2. Yeah, agreed with you. Don't over-stress ourselves. If need be like I mentioned, just take a nap and eat something light if hungry.

    3. hahaha.. always prepare some snacks with you just in case your tour guide insisted that lunch or dinner is an hour later :p

  22. Type 1 : This one is very attached to home lah. Always wondering what time is it in Malaysia in reference to the local time. For me, I was not bothered at all about Malaysian time. Didn't think of home also hah..hah...hah...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think not attached to home but rather attached to the home time for convenient and biological reasons.

      Delete
    2. well sometimes you will have to consider this if you are planning to make a call home.. you just do not want to call home in the middle of the night and scare everyone~~ :p

  23. Actually the time difference thingy is quite interesting right? God really create something very special, every country got different time zones.. And I remember when I first learn about time difference, I got very amazed, it's like imagine it's night over here and we are getting ready to bed, but at the same time, people at the other side of the planet is waking up getting ready to work!

Anyway, TIME is indeed something very sensitive and important while we are traveling, especially if you are following a group tour. And I can totally relate to what you are talking today. I have met many people whom are so concerned about time at home! Especially elderly, really.

They will say like 'wah it's already 12am at Malaysia but we are still not sleeping yet, indeed we are shopping!'. I was like, who cares about what time it is at Malaysia, what's more important is local time at the tourist destination wert, that's where you are now, and you have to follow the time here.

And what's funny is like what you said, they will ask 'so is this local time or Malaysia time?'. Come on, takkan the tour guide mention Malaysia time while we are already oversea? Common sense la right? Sometimes they really make me confused also...ac

    1. Yeah, I agreed with hayley. Follow the local time and enjoy yourself and stop worrying about your sleep, makan, pang sai...etc.
Anyway, I am sure all of us will have ample rest before each excursion.

    2. yes, it's just better for us to follow the local time, live with where we are presently at lah.. I remember the last time I followed a group tour, aiyoh, all the aunties still want to stick back to MY time and that makes things so much more complicated.. why the hell need to know what time to meet up in MY time while you are on holiday leh?? extra work to calculate the time, and confusing themselves too when they still see bright sun when it's already 8pm in MY.. haiz, funny people..

    3. True, we just need to enjoy and follow whatever available when we are holidaying~ No need to bother about time in Malaysia.

Sometimes what they say make us confused also >.<

  24. Hahaha, your conclusion has me laughing. I never expected minions there! Thought you are going to really give us your real conclusion. Honestly I have never met your Type 1 and Type 2. So in your group of friends who you traveled with, there is a Type 1 and a Type 2? Since you seem to know all about them.

    1. When I was working in the Advertising line, I need to call regional offices so I need to pay attention to the local time of the regional offices, Japan is one hour ahead of us, so we have to bear in mind if not they would be off work already

    5. When we were young, sure can adapt well and fast. I remember I don't have problem too when I first traveled to Spain in 2008. Then right after gave birth in 2012, I traveled to US, I feel somehow my body isn't that strong enough, I get tired easily too! >.< (May be because of the long hours flight also la, imagine almost 24 hours in the plane....)

    6. haha very true and well said.. I think when we were young, it sure wasn't a big problem to us to deal with time difference, but as we get older this probably can be a killer to our biological clock.. anyway, just go natural and don't force ourselves but let our body slowly adjust.. :)

  29. I don't wear watch so every time just look at my handphone to know the time. Since the clock is automatically altered when I go to another country, no need to set it manually.

  30. I never bother about home time once I'm in a different time zone. Unless I want to call home or something which I rarely do anyway. But sometimes I do think, what would I be doing right now at home? LOL!

    2. errr... when you are on vacation... usually you don't think of home right ? Yeah, unless you needed to call back but most of the time, we will be busy with our excursions and furthermore, your loved ones knew you are away, unless you needed to check your shopping list with them.

    3. haha.. i don't call home also, but just send a message when i arrived.. and as for shopping, errr, don't care lah, when you are there you cannot wait too long for a decision, so just call to get an immediate response.. :D
