Bangkok: A 90/10 Leisure/Business Trip (1 of 3)
i guess many readers were curious where i was away to for the past week.. nowhere far nowhere exquisite, just BANGKOK only lah.. it was a 90/10 Leisure/Business trip, went there to meet up a potential partner and then extended stay for leisure considering the long holidays.. i actually have not thought of blogging this trip until some readers "reminded" me with their expectations.. i mean, Bangkok is like so "common" and many have been there before, i have nothing special that i wanted to blog about.. furthermore, this was my third visit after the first two in October 2007, hence even less excitement.. okay, rather than having to scratch my head for topics, i shall just blog in categories base on the very few photos i (remember to, sic) have taken.. no worries, i promise you this will be a light series (only 3 posts) unlike the heavy Japan trip posts (i know they bored you), haha!! hope you enjoy~~ :)

I clicked on all your pictures.. Your meal, to be honest, looks ok, but not really appetizing.. The rice is too dry, I prefer more gravy.. Can choose between 2 options right.. What's the other option? Usually one is pasta meal, another is rice hor?

I knew it, FF is there too.. When I was clicking your pictures one by one justnow, I was thinking, hmm, sure got FF or Julius one.. Then really wor, hehe.. Wah FF really lucky, followed you everywhere, sit so many times airplane liao..

    1. The last trip I made to Bangkok was together with my whole family to attend my uncle's funeral and it was just a one night's stay. It was so rush and crazy for me. I must go again soon to have a proper trip, at least eat proper Thai food and shop at Chatujak market.

    2. 1A: So you took MARS AIRLINES and they took you all the way to Planet Mars with their lousy food!!! I am surprised to see the blue box containing the food like a military meal servings in boxes. I know this ailing airlines will undergo some drastic cut on their expenses now but that might scare passengers away instead.

Let me share a true and honest statement from my Japanese housemate while we were in US. He told me the reasons all Japanese refused to fly MARS because the survey conducted concluded that the food served smells awful while still being stacked up inside our pantry. I was no sure why the polls gave such results that drove the Nippons away until I myself flew MARS from London to Kuala Lumpur after getting off from British Airways from Philadelphia. It was near dinner time and the hostess opened the pantry's door after the food trays were being warmed. The horrible pong that floated out gave me cold sweats. Immediately I remembered my Japanese friend's remarks which seemed true. The food was served to me and I could eat them all, without problem. Years later, I found out that most Malaysian dishes when placed together in closed containers will combine the smells and turn into horrible aroma instead. The best example would be when the caterers deliver some ordered food in metal tiffin carriers to offices, you will get almost the same horrible pong. When the staff separated the tiers of food, the awful smell was gone. Anyone had this theory like mine?

      Delete
    3. LOL at TM comment, to think that he thought of Planet Mars, I have never heard of MARS AIRLINES, at first I thought SK meant MAS

      Delete
    4. Oh silly me or SK purposely hide the name MAS and created the name MARS, no wonder there is no such airline call MARS

    5. SK made me confuse

    6. oh yeah, the food are nice and there are so many things to buy in Chatuchak market, probably can't finish browsing the stuffs in three days, haha!!

the food served on MARS Airlines were really awful, thought of giving it a chance but this time, the experience told me to totally forget about this airline already, haha!! and regarding your claim on our food creating unpleasant smell, maybe that's true.. many times i smell something awful and to find out someone has actually eaten chap fan earlier on, especially in air-conditioned places..

  10. 1B: This is definitely the wisest way to be well connected in overseas by using their local SIM cards. I was silly and went to China & Taipei using my phone's roaming data plan for convenience. When i got back to office, I was shocked to see the phone bills but my boss happily paid for me cos he was pleased to know that I could be reached by them and clients even while on long vacation. Oh dear, I am smarter now and would buy these telco services abroad to save big bucks. All the money saved could be used for shopping instead, why not? Smart Thambee, Anay pat your karipap head.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i used to be "stubborn" to keep using my own SIM card and kena charged exorbitant roaming fees, especially geram when banks and those telemarketing companies called me up to ask if i am interested to get loans and credit cards!!! now, i don't care, with WhatsApp and even free calls from chat apps, i think it's okay to change to a local prepaid card which is so much cheaper.. just need to inform anyone who might be calling you or you are expecting to get calls from to contact via chat apps..

  11. 1C: What a lovely and affordable hotel you guys stayed at. I heard that Bangkok has the most range of boutique hotels in the world and the trend is popular with tourists now. Next would be Taipei with more kinky boutique hotels for patrons that charge by hours. The location of your hotel is perfect and I tried staying in that area once but the long walk to the BTS station killed my poor aching legs after hours of shopping. Those days I didn't check the google map locations to get precise distance. Now Anay pandai sikit.

    1. i would say the rates are pretty good deal too, it didn't actually cost a bomb to stay in Bangkok.. i like boutique hotels in contemporary designs, and these small hotels are always more friendly and situated near stations for convenience of backpackers..

Now frequent travellers very pandai jor. Must have data connection. 24 hours connected. Hence have to buy prepaid card once touch the down.

Not like japan..if not mistaken ..in your post about japan here is data connection everywhere for free right?

Wise idea not only for the data but also to make phone calls. If go with a few friends then if got separated, at least will have means to contact leh. Not like in the old days...wait at one spot at certain time. Sometimes wait till neck also long jor. Lol.

Hu? The girl turn off wifi and imessage? I dont quite understand coz never use iphone before. So when the two are turned off then means you have to use their line is it? But how does that affect you coz you already have unlimited internet. Means can whatapps viber and etc.

Samsung phone if wifi turned off canview from the main screen . So will not go unnoticed lor

    1. eih ya lah, now i don't want to hang on to my own SIM card and kena charged roaming lor.. nowadays all people using smart phones, data is more important than voice leh, so it's okay to just get a local SIM card for internet access lor.. WhatsApp, LINE, WeChat etc can chat and can also make calls mah, good enough..

dunno why the girl wanted to turn off my Wifi and iMessage (FYI iMessage is between iPhones to send messages through internet and not telco network).. though say unlimited, but after you finished the 1.5GB quota then the connection will slow down.. i think she "bok" people will top-up again once the speed slows down gua..

The hotel you stayed is it budget hotel? Now many budget hotel have good facilities and clean. Sometimes much better than those 3 stars 4 stars in terms of rates and cleanliness. Service dare not say Lah.

How you book your hotel? From agoda ka? So pandai find such good hotel leh. Usually i book from agoda and read guests review whether it's clean or not. I scaredroaches running here and there

    1. yalah, if the hotel is good then might as well just stay lor, moving hotels very troublesome one leh.. need to pack and unpack, and then carrying the luggage here and there.. errr, dunno consider budget or not woh, but certainly not 5-star hotel lah.. we booked through www.booking.com, have been using this website for a few trips already lu, because reasonable and one main thing is that, no need to pay first and can have free cancellation up to 1-2 days before your booking dates..

  38. The Rose Lamoon Restaurant looks somewhat like a cafeteria. Simple and casual decor. Eh, no pictures of your breakfast? So, just curious what sort of breakfast do they serve?

    1. Since it was complimentary breakfast, was it served buffet style? Or it was some sort of set menu?

    2. yeah, it's actually a cafe but can also be a restaurant in the local standard i guess.. it is open for public too, they serve pretty nice food and on the last day while waiting for the rain to stop after checked out, we actually had lunch there..

  39. Hey, that bus brings back memories of the old buses I used to ride on. hah..hah...I used to take the Foh San bus in Kajang when I was studying in UKM. That bus was a real bone shaker!

    1. So the buses there are frequent or not? Or are they like what we have here? Really vomit blood during the old days when I relied on bus for transport.

    2. haha, yes, i had the same thought too when i was in the bus.. i would say the public transport in Bangkok is way better than in KL..

  43. Oh..my bad . ... I miss this post due to my busy schedule. What a poor start to the defending champions from April... hahaha... Now, I gotta spam two posts in one shot...muahahahaha...

Aiyo... I thought they have buck up after all the tragedies but it seems they are getting lower and lower. Even the food is terrible... aiyo. My Sat morning breakfast of nasi lemak which only cost me Rm2.50 is much better than this. This seems to be of a very low class catering food. The rice also looks not very fresh and very little ingredients. Maybe they just want to cover everything with the curry or sambal.

  44. Yeah, I agreed with you that they could be cutting cost, but then don't compromise on the basic stuffs like food la. The food and services, as well as the gorgeous-ness of the pramugari very much represent the country. hahaha...
How to promote the country when the first stuffs they gave are so lousy ...

Did you 'lao sai' after eating the food ? muaahahaha...

  45. Yeah, nowadays its a must to have data access whenever we go. Just get a limited data plan will do to cover your trip, at least can whatapps anay when you are away...muahahahha..... My SG colleagues too, always ask me to buy SIm card for them whenever they are coming to Malaysia.

Aiyo... they want you to fully utilised the data plan is it? Disallowed your wifi access and use more of the cellular message..muahahahaha.... What a great service!!! But SK being SK ... you are sharp and realise what they have done to your phone.

  46. So, you paid 49 baht only for 10 days internet access? That's very cheap!! Got 4G or not ? muahahhha..

It is so much cheaper than Dagi or Selcom, and moreover their access is not consistent. Sometimes got 4G then suddenly become 2G , even in KL.

ANyway, on the other hand, if it's not for work, I think its best not to have data. Can relax relax without people kacau-ing you. ONly check your messages when you got ifi access. How nice!

  47. yeah, it is always good to stay at locations with lots of amenities for convenience. With 7-11, you can go over to get those basic stuffs that you needed where all the shops are closed. If its near the laundry, you guys can also dump your dirty clothes there. I dislikes bringing loads of dirty clothes home.

And you even got some good rates for your extended stay. That's wonderful. No need to pack up and search and move to another hotel, which is a waste of time!!

    1. yalor, it's actually even cheaper than we booked online leh, somemore it was also holidays there, so considered very good rate, and we somemore nego for free breakfast to be included woh.. save the trouble to move to another hotel lor..

  48. Oh..so, it was a boutique hotel, good, can save some money for the vacation too. It looks pleasant at the lobby. No wonder you like it there, besides the convenience.

Anyway, boutique hotels always gave me a not so safe and vice activities picture. Probably, in some places, they charged by hours which is usually meant for vice activities....muahahaha.... I may be wrong!

Nowadays, whenever I passed by these hotels, they are well decorated and clean with lots of basic convenience like wifi and so on. I haven't stayed in a boutique hotel yet anyway.

  50. The restaurant looks pleasant. So, what food you guys have been eating the same breakfast daily? Thai cuisines? But it looks western to me. You didn't show the food here but if its me, I will surely go for their local food. After all, you are in Thailand and it's a waste if you don't eat their specialities like tom yum, boat noodles, pineapple rice, basil chicken and etc.
So, I guess this restaurant provides you guy the meals daily while you are working...muahahaha.... How's their coffee?

    1. the restaurant (actually more like a cafe) offers both western and local food for breakfast, very nice especially the fried rice.. 1000 times better than that of MARS Airlines, hahaha.. err, not my first time there lah, not necessarily need to eat all local food mah :D

  51. wah ... you really saved money or maybe wanted to experience their public transports? Usually folks who went to other countries to work, unless it's a expensive city, they will take cabs to go around.

Anyway, glad you experience their public transports and have fun! No tuk-tuk over there ? hahaha... OK la, they bus looks like those in KL or JB ... and good to have air-cond. how much is the fare ?

But funny they still say 'bon appetit', xD
I took AA last time, so no onboard meal, plus only like 2 hours flight, no need to eat la! Save tummy for later, keke!

Oh ya, smart choice! I think it's worth it to get their SIM card since you were there for 8 days, more convenient! But wifi access is quite convenient also la in Bangkok. Like every shops also got eh.

    1. Glad to know you guys picked a good hotel. I guess most hotels in Bangkok are nice la, so many competitions wo, sure each and every hotels also wanna provide the best service ever.
Boutique hotel is good enough, since you are traveling either alone or with friends. Unless if going with family la, then need to switch to bigger hotel for better comfort lo~ This Fing Fing indeed very hang fook! Papa go everywhere he also gets to follow, fuiyoh, jealous nya!!
Usually hotel provides breakfast la right? Can save a bit. To me, it's ok to eat in the hotel, at least to 医肚子 first, then when we go out, baru go buy something else to eat.

Oh, you took their bus! What an experience! Hardly can see such buses around, I mean like old and without air cond, can enjoy 'nature wind' blow from the windows, hehe! I bet you also hear those 'eh eh' sounds in the bus? Those coming from the old steels/chairs, hehehe!

  54. 1C ~ For me, I prefer to stay at the same hotel through out whole trip ya, unless it I was in a group, like group tour, then got people help to carry luggage. I tried that in my past Japan trip, carry my luggage transfer to other place, have to walk damn far, the far is actually not an issued to me, the biggest problem is it has uphill road sometimes, seriously then I got back hurts at night, have to use salonpas like elderly...omg!! Next time don't ever try that, if really have to try that, I won't buy anything, just empty hand go and empty hand bag. Coz I know I go travel for fun not to tired myself ya!!

Near to the train station is a very good thing, don't need to walk so far, especially when you're with your luggage, coz usually you've your luggage with you from the airport then take public transport to your accommodation, so the first came to mind is find the place to settle down first before say anything or go anywhere right?

7-eleven near by is very good leh, don't have to worry anything even though got hungry at midnight, can just go down there to buy something to eat. When it was located very far, guess even though hungry, also no mood to eat lo, if really have to walk very far just to buy something to eat, when walk back the moment have already lost all your appetite...
