2014.05.21 | 開樽限期

[Volume 9 Issue 5, #1896]
remember last month after i bought some skincare and fragrance from a warehouse sales, we discussed about the expiry of these products?? well, different readers gave different opinions and that got me went googling about it.. surprisingly, none i found actually talk about the expiry after the products are manufactured (because their lifetimes are at least 30 months) but rather on how long they can last after opened for use and before they turn bad.. okay, so this is it if you didn't know (and i just knew about it), you would likely see an "open-jar symbol" on the container of your skincare products and fragrances.. as shown in the photo above for example, there are labels like 12M, 18M, 24M etc printed on the "jar", the M denotes months and the number indicates how many units, thus the label means after your cosmetic has been opened for use for the first time, you are advised to finished using it within 12, 18 or 24 months depending on what's indicated on the label.. most of mine carry the 24M label, so i would say i'm very safe, since i have a big face and fat body so i use them fast, need no 24 months and i'm done with them, haha!! :D
if you are still using that perfume your then-boyfriend or then-girlfriend gave you as your first present, aiyoh, can throw that away already~~ :p

    1. I believe I need to tell my eldest sister about this, because we used to use type of skincare product, she always take forever to finish them because she just a little bit of it only (less than the usual amount should use) so like for me maybe I can finish the bottle in about 6 months then she needs like more than a year to finish lo!!!

    2. But about fragrance, I always take out the bottle then throw away the box wor...then how to check argh??? Don't care la...I just have one without the box...this reminds me have the keep the box for reference or write a small note on it to remind myself!!!

    3. Is kind of funny I just know I have to check the expire date or after opened for use of skincare product, but never check for cosmetic one =.=!!! But so far I know if the product turns bad means cannot use already, like mascara dry out means keep too long already, and those foundation product it will turns very dry or broke into parts means cannot use already!!!

    4. Thanks for sharing...I got to be more aware in next time, like mostly people aware the most is food expired date and after opened use period, but hardly aware of those daily use products, like this skincare, fragrance and also cosmetic one!!!

    5. I guess most of the time, we will throw away the cosmetic products after a year. Somehow, we may be tired of the smell and wanted to try new ones.

    9. 小影,today you are first, again ;)

I agree, 岁月不留人,保养要趁早!I always think we should start a good skin care when we were young. Not to really buy a lot of expensive stuff but at least to do the basic, like cleansing and moisturizing. Applies to both man and woman ;)

    10. But I've a friend, she doesn't use any facial cleansing one, because she said she has too sensitive skin, then so she prefer just use water to wash only...so I wonder without cleansing also can argh?

I have a boss here, when he opens his mouth to talk, the whole room will stink! He doesn't smoke, so I dunno how on earth his mouth can stink so badly.. Not only me, others are talking about this too..

Gawd, this is so embarrassing.. Quite high rank in the office too.. And his shirt, gawd, looks messy, not ironed and has some "smell", like "just-wake-up" smell.. You know, those "chau lou chui" (guy's smell)... Dunno how to explain la, you have to come smell his shirt and mouth to know, haha!

me oo have quite a number of skin care products....but i think many already cannot use liao. expired . coz i buy buy buy then keep then forgot about it. buy when got warehouse sale lor. cheaper. But if come to think of it i tarak use...end up waste...hence cost is higher leh. Now seldom chase warehouse sale liao

    5. Oh yes, Thambee uses so many skin, body and hair care products from head to toes! He is like a bottle of walking Biotherm robot!

Those who have bad breath when they spoke, must be due to some decay smell inside their body like gums or intestines! It is supposed to be unhealthy and needs to be addressed immediately.

  5. Thanks for the info. , SK. Usually I do check the expiry date of makan stuffs but not too much on cosmetics and toiletries products like shaving cream , cleansers , deodorants, perfumes and etc. I always think that these products can last very long since they are not makan stuffs. And, I usually can finished fast too, less than a year.

Hmmm I wonder what about face mask. some people say if put in fridghe can keep longer than the expiry date. How ah? true or false and how much longer?

  6. So, if we don't open it , it still can last for that x no. of months ? Man....like that I go to Europe to buy some expensive perfumes and keep for 20 years, see how much I can fetch then ? Lol

  10. Morning morning.. Already 21 comments and I’m just 1 hour late.. SK, lei hai tak geh, as usual..

    1. Hmm, I don’t really use skincare and cosmetics, so I’ve never seen these 12M or 24M thingy, keke.. Call me jakun.. My basic skincare doesn’t state these 12M or 24M.. It doesn’t even have any expiry dates, as far as I remember.. The beautician just says “Use it everyday, day and night, and I’ll call you if there’s any promotions”, haha..

      Delete
    2. Talking about expiry dates, I still use expired products.. Flour, mayonnaise and instant noodles, hehe.. My dad says flour can be used, even after it has expired, just put it in the fridge.. So I listened and followed.. When I buy home flour, straight away I will put into the fridge after opening it.. Then I never bother already when is the expiry date.. I’ll just use it whenever I feel like baking..

Really, if you ask me about my flour’s expiry date, I won’t know.. And I don’t think I’m bothered to go see.. It’s in the fridge, and I think not a big deal kua..

I also use expired mayonnaise.. I usually buy the Kewpie Japanese mayonnaise.. It’s really good.. Better than others.. But if you want to make cold potato-egg salad, then better use La**es Choice mayo, taste more like it.. But other than cold potato-egg salad, I use Kewpie for everything.. My egg mayo, chicken mayo, cheese sandwich, everything.. Still taste good after 1 month expiry date, teehee.. Mm seh tak and lazy wana check expiry dates, so just terus consume it, but surprisingly, it still taste normal and ok..

Instant noodles? I think if you don’t mind the “chau yau yik” smell, then it still can be eaten after the expiry date.. Once you put in the sachet of MSG soup packet, the whole thing will smell like any other bowl of curry/chicken instant noodles liao.. I’ve eaten expired instant noodles, and it still taste ok..

Well, it’s just me la.. Of course I don’t encourage you guys to eat expired food la, aiyoh..

      Delete
    3. Can’t comment too much on expired skincare coz I don’t use them.. I only have some basic makeup in my drawer.. Eye shadow and lip gloss only.. Bought over 2-3 years ago !! Dunno whether I should continue writing.. The lip gloss was bought like over 8 years ago !! And……………… yesh, am still using it when I go for dinners !!! Really, I can’t be bothered with makeup and skincare, coz I really don’t use it..

      Delete
    4. But I’m like that, if now, suddenly I know there will be company dinner coming up, or there’s a big-shot kinda dinner or occasion which requires me to use makeup, I will apply one day leave or take sick leave and go shopping for new dress, heels and brand new makeup!

Haha… I’m like that.. “Need to shit only find toilet”.. It works better for me this way.. What’s the point of me buying and keeping it to collect dust if I don’t use it everyday? I don’t put makeup to work.. So, I guess I will only “kap kap keok” and “zha zha lum” buy when there’s a need or when there’s a (important) dinner coming up, hahaha..

      Delete
    5. But hor, I’m not really good in makeup too.. I guess I will just keep it simple.. Or refer from YouTube for simple tutorials.. Maybe I will just go for simple smoky eyes (which only uses black eye shadow), some glitter dust and lip gloss.. Oohhh and a (cheap) mascara too.. Guess that’s about it, since I will only use it for that night only.. Now very easy one la, YouTube has everything, all the tutorials I want, can always YouTube simple makeup, keke..

      Delete
    6. Wait, did I run out of topic? Well, still talking about makeup and skincare right.. I could only talk so much about it today, coz I really don’t use much skincare..

The skincare at home I think mostly expired liao, coz ever since having G, I stopped going for facials.. So I stopped buying skincare.. Coz normally I buy the skincare from the same beauty center.. Not cheap you know.. All should’ve gone into the bin, but am still keeping it.. Moisturizers, (oxygen) serum, eye cream, facial foam, all worth more than 1K ! But am still keeping it coz mm seh tak throw..

So what I do? I use them to apply to my hands, legs and neck! Smart eh?

    7. Thought you use the Marine elements skin care products ?

    8. Finished liao lor.. Used one-time off only.. After finished, not using anything now.. The body wash finished long time ago.. Intensive cream also finished already.. Now left the body lotion only.. Hubby uses it once a while, I leave it for him, I don't use anything already..

  14. Good Morning Bloggers! This topic will awaken many of us to pay more attention to all the products we apply onto our bodies or taken orally. I always came across many skin cares of mine that expired after 1-2 years! I regretted for buying them and hardly used them. The only thing that i would finish before expiry is perfumes! I would spray them generously from head until my toes! Hmmmm my scent could attract the stray dogs from 0.5km away! Muahahaha

    1. The next items that often expired are my canned and bottled food stuffs at home. Most of them were gifts from friends. I remember there were 2 jars of Strawberry and Blueberry Jams inside my fridge for almost 10 years! It was chilled very cold and didn't grow fungus but I threw it away! It could have turned into sweet poisons!

    5. Oh, speaking of canned and bottle food, TM, I usually do spot check for my mum and my mum in law.. Not sure if they don't bother or too busy but many times they still keep expired canned/bottled food at home.
When they don't realize they'll use it to cook and then............ Hoho!

So, I don't mind doing the spot check on and off for the sake of health for the entire family.

    1. Yeah! I agree with Lina, all cosmetic such as lips stick, eye shadow, powder, mascara, eye liner, blusher, and face cream are better to dispute after 2 years.

So, I don't keep many stocks of cosmetic products, I don't want to be wasteful. I only buy those I really need. Last time, I was more cheapo, I have only one or two lips stick, and I used them alternately.

Now only, I bought myself 5 to 6 lips sticks, at least I can use different colours every day.

As for my skin care products, I use very frequent, one bottle can only last me 3 months.

      Delete
    2. Yannie, since you are working I think no problem for you to use and finish those cosmetic and skin care products on time la!
But for me, I stay at home most of the time, no reason to put on cosmetic, so my mascara can last very long, until they become dry, then only I realise to throw them away, haha xD
But speaking of mascara, I don't have any mascara at home since many months ago, I am just too lazy. I prefer to use fake lashes, easy and can deliver better results!

      Delete
    3. I love fake lashes too, all Korean women use fake lashes. So in and trendy. I must stock up my fake lashes, fake lashes will never go expired like mascara, smart you!

    4. Haha true right? Plus there're so many types of falsies in the market, any style also got, got 斯文 type, got wild type, can fit for all functions!
But falsies cannot wear for too many times also, if you wear it often, you'll notice there're eye shadow/eyeliner stain on it, even the glue will leaves stain, so have to throw also~

    1. As for perfume, I am even more cheapo. I bought only miniature. 5 small miniatures in a box. So, those miniatures when using everyday, can only last less than a year.

I think SK has given all of us a good reminder. We better don't stock up so many skin care and cosmetic . It is very wasted to throw after its cap is opened and is not able to finish within the shell life.

    4. Merryn, haha, I like that description, mandi perfume!!
Sorry don't wanna sounds offensive but I guess some people really mandi perfume one! Once they enter the room, or when they walk pass us, that strong perfume scent stays for minutes!! I wonder how much they really spray? Though perfumes are mostly smells good but not everyone like the same scent ma! Too strong scent only creates irritation and makes people feel uncomfortable...
Actually I think a proper way of using perfume is to spray a bit on the wrist, or neck lo!

  24. Hi Hi everyone…
I never seen before this symbol at any cosmetic and skincare and perfume producst wor.. All I do is if the box is pretty I’ll will keep it and become my wrapping gift tools. I’ll put birthday gifts inside and wrap nicely…hahaha
Somehow I did I seen before this symbol from the pc battery… so the battery can last for the months according to the symbol is it? Or have other meaning?
My contact lense solution water did mentioned that the bottle of the water solution need to be throw away after 60days after opening it.
I did throw away those skincare which I feel I’ve kept for too long… I actually smell and see the colours too. If I don’t feel good about it then I throw away lor… I seldom buy skin care products of many range… I don’t like to spend money to buy so many cosmetics too… So those I thrown away is actually those sample I’ve received. On the other hand, I scrap all the creams away and I keep the bottle for other usage. Recycled mar… those miniature container is very useful when we travel.
My mom always say if got use only buy or else don’t waste money. Hahaha…

    1. Frankly speaking lar… as long as it is still in good condition, I don’t feel like throwing away lor… some perfumes are cost hundreds…”sam tong” lor..

Perfumes can turn dark yellowish one. If it is not good anymore… For cosmetics such as compact powders, lipstick and BB cream… those will have very strong smell when it is keep for too long. But hor.

How come the photo shown above got three symbols together one? 24M, 12M and 18M? Oh I understand now… this is like gift set right? Is it? So got three items inside and those symbols are meant for each of the products lor… I see I see….

    2. I believe skincare, cosmetics and so definitely will have expiry date same goes to consumer goods.
12M, 18M and 24M these labelled each and every one of the box it shows that those items will be good to be use within this period after opening. So sometimes how we should know how long the cosmetics is still in good condition?
12M shell life is ok… 18M is still acceptable. 24M will be too long for items?

    3. This symbold is something new to me, I Googled for it and this information I found from this site http://checkcosmetic.net/cosmetic-and-perfume-shelf-life-faq/

This is the partial part I've extracted and please read this...

"To clarify how long you can use your product once you opened it, Period after opening (PAO) sign is used. Try finding “open jar” sign with a number followed by the letter M, where number indicates how many months the product can be safely used for after opening. For instance, 6M means that product can be used during six months after opening; 12M means that product can be used during twelve months after you opened it etc

Production date (or manufacture date) is the date when your product was manufactured. More precisely, it is the date when the batch of cosmetics (also called lot) was produced. This date can be printed on the package, but also can be omitted.
Expiration date is the date after which your cosmetic product will be expired and should not be used anymore. Usually this date must be specified only for the cosmetics which shelf life period is 30 months or less. If this date is present, it should be printed directly on product package in the form month/year or day/month/year, for example: Exp. 09/10 means that you can use the makeup only till September, 2010; Exp. 15/06/2010 means that makeup can be used only before 15 of June, 2010.

Such way, if shelf life of the cosmetic product is more than 30 months (e.g. 3 years), the expiry date probably will not be printed. But this doesn’t mean that you can use the product during whole 3 years or more"

    5. Thank you Hayley, I really didn't see the symbols before or probably I totally didn't notice that after all. But since I've read it yesterday, you know what I did or not? I go to my dressing table and search all the cosmetics bottles, lotion, anything lar... turn the back and side, and see I can really find it, Nope not one I found.... Guess tonight need to find and search afew more items else where... until I found it...

    6. 12M, 18M and 24M to resemble the expiration according to my usage will be;

12M - For my perfumes at home... Not only me but for my hubby as well. We two spray "phang phang" - fragrantly go to work everyday. The longes we will use can tahan/ up to 18M only... Hubby and I always have 2 perfumes each for alternate usage.... hehehe...we loves to smell "phang phang" - I like to smell my hubby's one too. Blek!!!!

I don't know whether anyone of you remember the Versace perfumes - Blue Jeans for men??? The bottle is in glass blue color. Hubby keep that very long ago until... The smell is faded but the liquid in that bottle is not thickening too. Maybe some perfumes are good in quality. On the other side, Clinique Happy perfume for ladies - this one after 1yr plus going to 2 years, the smell getting stronger and the color of the liquid is getting yellowish... can compare it with the new ones bought.

    7. 18M - I will probably reclassify this expiry symbol to skincare product. Especially my facial cleanser. I always buy big tube one. And I would say I can use it very long. Maybe I'm lazy to wash my face lar... I have to admit that...hehehe... But my facial cleanser always use the longest one. I wonder why. I always squeeze a lil bit and it forms alot of bubbles and foam... and really cleans my face very well already. So if this case, I don;t feel to squuze more than that amount... totally a waste. Well it is a good news to know that the facial cleanser is very savvy...

My toner also can last very long...I never consider mine was a big bottle. But ZA toner is very cooling... just a few drops it will makes my cotton pad wet... almost enough for my face...Sometimes I'll clean my neck area using the toner too.

But hor to think logically, there are many items can range in this 18m expiry date. Most of our items are almost finish withing this 18M....so not to worry.

      Delete
    8. 24M - What are the items that I can keep for this long... hahaha cosmetic lor. I dare to say my lipstick... I seldom and rare to use one. I don't like putting on lipstick except lip gloss only. Go work also no need to put on make up one...If I do, mascara light powdered on my face that's it... not more than 20 mins too. very fast one.

If got dinner then only really make up my face lor.. Erm... I still have my cosmetic until now leh... more than 24M already... need to throw away or not? Sigh....Habislah SUB make up aku....

    2. I was told before that skin care products can be kept up to 3 years from the year of manufacturing. As long as the products doesn't change colour or have any weird odour, I think it is still safe to use ba.......throwing away such expensive products really heartache.

    3. Yes lor..I agreed too. As long as we keep at the safe place which is not expose to sunlight or humid place should be fine right? What you think?

    4. Perfumes not cheap, cosmetics and skincare also not cheap too.

      Delete
    5. Actually all the cosmetics or skin care products also got cheap one, just depends on whether you ok with it or not.
Like those 'pirated' brands selling at pasar malam, so much cheaper! But we sure think that's not trustable and not safe to use, 'sam lei' problem.
Anyway, my advice is don't simply buy those ciplak pirated brands from unknown sources. Sorry la I don't wanna sound like I am rich person but then it's the skin and face we are talking about, cannot take risk ler! Who knows what's the actual ingredients inside? Later kena skin irritation then regret also no use, worse, skin cancer ar!
I am not encouraging people to buy expensive branded stuff but at least buy those brands from trusted sources, like those in Guardian, Watson, or even at hypermarkets, I am sure there are more economical brands with reasonable and affordable prices, like Nivea, Nano White, those are very good products too!

    6. Yes I agreed with you Hayley... Wah yesterday night not yet sleep ka...

My skinscare I'ms till using ZA until now... it never burns my pocket lor... I'm happy with it. Last time used branded one... got result for the first 2 weeks... but then... no effect already. Then I switch back to my ZA...

    7. Hahah pirated one.. I saw SHow Kit road pasar malam... that one very long one... got sell SKII... When I see the color of the liquid solution...it turns out to be light yellow....probably the spot light effect kua... But hor better don't lar... I did asked whether it is original or not. The person says yes... it is rejected bcos of the pakcaging prob.... Then in my said these are definitely contaminated already... Confirm more than 12M, 18M and 24M jor...

    8. Haha, of course I sleep! Just that I sleep late only, no choice, have to wait til Aden is asleep then only I can sit down and spam peacefully!

ZA is good I guess, tried their cleanser before, not bad, and price is affordable! Glad that you found a brand which suits you!

Yep, SK II sure got a lot pirated stocks, perfumes also. I wonder how many people will actually buy those pirated products?

  29. Hello SK!
Friday is coming! Woohoo! (I am always excited when it comes to weekend, I mean who doesn't right? :p)

Ok, so this is a continuation about that perfume post huh? You are quite determine wo, purposely go Google about that expiry date and share it with us ;) Good la, I bet now everyone knows better.

See, that's what I told you during the perfume post, every skin care product/cosmetics got expiry date, it's indicates by the container logo with the numbers in months. I always pay attention to that, cause you know la, face/skin is a woman's important asset so cannot play play! Plus a lady who is so 爱美 like me, I'll never compromise my skin, hehe!

In fact, I do housekeeping on and off, check on the skin care products' expiry date, for those products which I use daily (like mosturiser, eye cream, toner, cleanser, sunblock and etc) no problems la, sure can finish before the expiry date.
But for cosmetic which I hardly use like blusher, foundation, eye shadow, mascara and etc, I do check the date often, and see if the smell or texture changes, if yes then I'll just throw them away. All are chemicals so cannot continue to use if it has pass the expiry date.
Sometimes feel 不舍得 to throw also la, cause not cheap and still got some portion to use, but no choice leh! I don't wanna risk myself on using these products just because I don't wanna waste.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Last time I used to buy cosmetic very often, stock up eyeshadow with different colors, but in fact I hardly use them, only use them during special occassion like wedding dinner/clubbing, so it takes years to finish using them, they end up in the dustbin :(
Then, I learn to be 节省, spend lesser on cosmetic, for eyeshadow buy 1-2 color enough, no need to buy so much.

    1. For skin care products, for those unfinish cream, sometimes I'll use them on my hands/feets instead, if they have expired but still look and smell ok. Treat them as lotion lo, I believe our hands and legs can adapt better, not as sensitive as our face. If irritation happens also won't be that obvious to be seen, and not that worse also.
Like that can mosturise our hands/legs and at the same time, won't feel bad about throwing the products away.

Haha, you are so 夸张 la SK! You said you have a big face and fat body and that's why your products can finish fast? xD
I believe that's not the reason la! You must be using them regularly that's why can finish within 24 months!

      Delete
  31. Oh speaking about perfume, I do have a perfume given by my then-boyfriend! Until now sitting nicely on my make up table, haha!
More than 5 years I am sure! But feel 不舍得 to just throw away ma! Got memories leh! :p
But I really seldom use perfume, just don't have the habit, and since I got kid, I lagi seldom use... Cause afraid to cause nose sensitivity to Aden ma since I need to carry him and be with him closely everyday.
There're a few more perfume I haven't open, keep nicely with the boxes too. Most are presents from friends and my sister in law.
So, in order not to waste them, I treat them like room fragrance, just open the cap and let the perfume scent occupy the room. Eventually the amount of the perfume will get lesser and lesser and finish in the end.
    A very smart trick! ;)

    1. My hubby also, keeps the Hugo perfume until today, that was my gift to him when we started dating, as a Christmas gift I remember. Also more than 5 years! xD He lagi seldom use perfume la! He works outside as an air cond engineer and his body and shirts always full with dirts/paint/bad smells every single day, use perfume also no use, wasted only.
And when he's going out for yum cha, he also don't have the habits to spray on perfume, cause to him it's only a yum cha session at kopitiam/cafe, why need to spray perfume?
He uses perfume only when I remind him to, that also is when going to a wedding dinner, haha!
