[Volume 9 Issue 3, #1876]
i always think comfort food need not be fancy, most of the time the more rundown then the more authentic and the more delicious they are.. i wonder how much do you agree with me in this?? recommended by yours sincerely, but i must stress that this is not a paid post.. great things must be shared right?? :)
位於蘇丹街(著名茨廠街隔離)一列戰前建築之中, 當你見到間半隱蔽嘅店, 出面個玻璃櫥櫃掛著好多隻雞, 又或者店前企滿等位嘅人, 大概就去啱地方喇..
located in a stretch of colonial buildings along jalan sultan (next to petaling street), you'd probably find this almost hidden shop when you saw either the chickens hanging on the rack or the crowd waiting to be seated..

    8. Anything you want to do at KUALA LUMPUR, choose public transport because of the parking haiz.
This is so called Malaysia pattern -> Cars more than people.
That's why MCD's drive through can be so successful.

    1. Eh, I also wana share a coffeeshop selling chicken rice.. Meng Kee.. Located in Glenmarie.. My bosses all very likey this place leh.. Everytime when there’s a company meeting or what, they like to take-away from this shop, and the whole office will be filled with char-siew and chicken rice aroma.. Non halal, but what to do, bosses like.. They do what they like.. In the meeting room, they eat themselves lor.. Meng Kee char-siew and roast chicken very famous.. Popular for char-siew & “siew cheong”..

    2. I will come back to spam later can ahh, now rushing for something..

      Hi & bye..

    3. I have been to Meng Kee!!! It is a famous shop and SO VERY DELICIOUS! Always crowded outside at lunch hours and I would sweat profusely like a fountain display.

      Delete
    4. oh yes, if the chicken rice itself is nice ah, i can also wallop the whole plate of chicken rice by itself, no need the chicken or the char siew at all leh.. i am not a rice person, but for flavored rice, i can't resist, for example, chicken rice, fried rice, yam rice etc

oh Meng Kee, i have been there once last time a colleague brought us there when we were meeting customer nearby.. but it was long time ago, can't really remember leh, but i remember a lot of people..

    6. Hubby always buy chicken rice on Saturday.. Already like a routine.. I know too much is not good, but then, it’s only once a week, so I guess it’s ok.. He works half day every Saturday, so when he comes back, he will tapau chicken rice for himself (and me).. I don’t eat one whole packet, I will only eat a few tablespoon from his rice..

See, I’m not a glutton afterall.. I can be a normal person if I want to, hehe.. I wana keep my tummy for dinner.. Usually dinner, I eat a lot.. Dinner time will go to my MIL’s and she will cook a feast usually.. If we don’t go the MIL’s, then we will eat out, to indulge.. Like steamboat or western.. So usually will keep my tummy for dinner time.. Yes, I know eating too much for dinner is no good, but again, once a week.. And the next day, I will skip all meals to balance it.. Ok, I don’t skip all meals.. But I will have very light meals the next day to kinda compensate..

Hubby’s chicken rice usually consist of roasted chicken and roasted pork.. “siew gai” and “siew yok”.. My favourite chicken rice will consist of white-chicken and liver.. “pak gai” and “gai yun”…

Favourite chicken part for chicken rice will be breast.. Can have more meat ma, no “sitt dai”.. Dunno why, if go eat at KFC or any fried chicken (like in mamak nasi kandar or wat), will choose chicken thigh.. I hate breast part if I go eat at KFC.. I will always ask for two thighs in my snack plate.. But as for chicken rice, I will always ask for breast.. Hmm, weird? I tried asking for chicken thigh in my chicken rice, turns out, all bones and very little meat.. Like “sitt dai” like that, keke.. Kiasu ma, want more meat, so breast part is the best la..

    7. That Meng Kee place which I was talking about, very weird one wor.. If you have been there, you know what I mean.. There are a few Meng Kee in Glenmarie.. Divided into noodles shop, chicken-charsiew shop (no siew yok), duck shop, etc.. I was like “duh, if we wana eat roast duck and roask chicken together, then how”? Makes sense? But they are so popular, they are not worried if customers walk away when they can’t get to eat roast duck with their chicken rice.. Customers can just eat chicken rice here, then walk over to another branch to eat roast duck rice.. Doesn’t make sense to me, but well, if you see the crowd everyday, you know they are not worried.. Everyone has to wait to be seated.. Standing next to the table of people almost finishing, to “chup” that place.. They are willing to wait nomatter how long it takes..

      Delete
    8. I know which Meng Kee you guys talking about. I've tired before a few times at Glenmarie there. Last time my head office is around that area. Damn crowded with people. When boss belanja sure go there...always. Some of us already saved Meng Kee phone number just to order their tasty and sweet char siew... People go there for their char siew actually rather than the fried rice. But somehow the more I eat I feel jelak already cos nowadays their char siew is just too sweet.

    9. aiyoh Princess Ribbon just had a few spoonful of the chicken rice ah?? then i know lah, this Princess Ribbon will eat things she likes like a glutton like there's no tomorrow but when it's things she doesn't like she never touch at all.. actually like this not good lah, gotta eat moderately, balance and rationally lah :D

for me, chicken breast for chicken rice, and then chicken breast and chicken ribs for KFC.. i hate thigh lah, very oily and sometimes the meat got smell also and then some when not fully cooked hor will have blood oozing out leh.. i prefer the lean part of a chicken lor, and they are always well cooked..

yeah, i've been to Meng Kee once only.. last time colleague brought us there because we were nearby seeing customers.. errr, but too long ago that was, cannot remember the taste already.. but remember the sales guy belanja and claimed company lah, haha~

    10. Uikks, Angeline, you worked there before? But now your location in Taiping kan? Can cerita more ahh, about yourself? Hehehe.. You may think I 8, but I wana know ma.. No harm hor? Tanya maknanya sayang, kekekeke.. If not interested in that person, can’t be bothered to ask also la, kan.. Kekeke..

SK, yeah, I only have a few tablespoon of hubby’s chicken rice every Saturday for lunch, coz I don’t want to eat the whole packet.. I can if I want, but I control.. He always says he wana buy one packet for me, but I say don want.. Coz I wana save my tummy for dinner.. He normally comes back around 2pm, then by 5pm+ eat dinner liao wor.. Imagine if I eat a whole packet of chicken rice with livers and all, then 5pm eat dinner again, ma “fei sei ngor”? So I must balance also la, keke..

Eh, I love chicken rice also la.. I can eat like a glutton if I want, but I control leh.. I tell you la, I can eat a packet of BIG chicken+liver rice, then I can eat another BIG wanton mee la.. Then I can eat another BIG curry mee too.. BUT, of coz I control.. If really famished, then I can wallop leh, no joke..

Yesterday we had dinner at a steamboat restaurant near Balakong.. We ordered a soup base steamboat (2 persons), then add other “liew”, one plate each: 1) fishballs 2) meat balls 3) lamb slices 4) bacon, 5) quail’s eggs 6) sui kow and 7) sausages.. Then we ordered another cheese fondue leh, with French fries and fried fish.. Then got “siew yue” (ikan bakar) in Portuguese asam gravy.. No joke leh, 2 person eat (with Kz boy, but he only touched 1 meat ball), eat like glutton and hungry ghost.. Like baru “fong kam” (out from prison)… My hubby sometimes jokingly say, “lei sik koong ngor” (direct translation: you eat poor me).. Huhuhu…

aiyoh, you are Princess Glutton who has a stomach triple the size of mine.. one packet of chicken rice for you only mah, "saap saap sui" lah.. eat already and few hours later already digested and i am sure you can again eat like a glutton again during your dinner lah.. :D

which branch Anay gone to? the one in KL or the one in Glenmarie? Their Char siew is famous but then now kinda expensive. Lunch time if go Meng kee will need to queue long long long leh....

Meng Kee now seems to be over rated liao . Price increased but portion remaind. NOw I like the Emperor Chicken Rice in Meru. Nice. Yum

  6. Good Morning All Friday Bloggers and Ayam-Itek Lovers! It's food post by SK Thambee today. I am hungry now and cannot wait for lunch hour. I love to eat Chicken Rice that's only famous and excellent to cook tender meat with fragrant rice! This shop is definitely famous otherwise SK won't blog about it. Not a paid post, so I suspect the seller has an eligible daughter - Miss Chicken Little!

  7. I always prefer to eat the Roasted Chicken rather than the Steamed White Chicken. Most of the time, the steamed white chicken had so much blood and I am not a Vampire!!! Bluek! The blood could still be oozing and smells like a murdered corpse! No thanks unless it's perfectly well done. I would coated and flood my rice with their minced ginger paste which makes my lunch so heavenly.

    1. i actually prefer steam chicken than roast chicken.. some roast chicken can also have blood oozing out, especially the drumstick and thigh part.. anyway, i always ask for chicken breast and guess that part is always well done.. they have both steam chicken and roast chicken in that shop, but the authentic hainanese style is actually steam chicken lah.. ginger paste?? i love it a hell lot more than the chili~~ :)

      Delete
    2. Me too! Me too! Roasted one for me. Steamed one...moist and people prefer not completely cooked - the bone marrow still red red one , risk of coming down with food poisoning is high.

      Delete
    3. nah, i only eat the chicken breast so would be a lot better than the thigh and drumstick.. urgh, i don't suck on the marrow lah, i also do not like the red red things and also the blood oozing out.. everything must be well done for me, including beef and steak..

      Delete
    4. You are like j lah Anay. He also like Roast Chicken. Maybe due to the marinate. The normal whicte chicken he dont like much

Mamarazzi likes Steamed Chicken too. Eh but then even steamed chicken sometimes will have blood oozing out leh, SK. She had before in a "famous" chicken rice restaurant. The white chicken comes with blood oozing out from the bone.

But terbaliks she like thigh and drumstick. But if the chicken Pak Cham kai, she like to have chicken breat. Can peel and then dip in ginger or the chinese yellow mustard. Sedap. Too bad she doesnt know how to make that. Her granny used to make when there is a festival

      Delete
    5. ah yes, i think only happens to thigh and drumstick lah.. i don't like them, i always order chicken breast only, so no problem at all.. yeah lor, so nice to go with ginger paste right?? haha, chinese yellow mustard?? haha, got such thing?? i thought mustard is gwai lo thing lah.. eih, learn to cook your pak cham gai lah, half a chicken you pak cham, half a chicken you roast for J lah :p

My hubby once stopped at the opposite road and the worker (I think he's from Nepal or Vietnam) quickly ran across the road and asked how many box we want, then ran back to the shop, tapao nicely and brought the boxes to us, we din't give him exact amount of money and he still ran back and fro to give us the balance, mind you the road was pretty busy that time.
Guess the tauke trained the workers very well huh? What a smart business tactic! But most importantly is, the salted chicken really got quality la, very yummy!

    3. yeah, Claire should know all the corners and lobangs of Ipoh lah, remember she is the Ipoh Food Mayor mah, haha!! oh, which shop is that?? haha, i think maybe because the competition is stiff so they would do anything to get more customers.. i remember my friend brought me to a shop at corner, the box is in red color.. errr, actually hor, i like my salted chicken put in the fridge overnight and then have it cold.. many people say i am weird, but i find it more 入味 like that leh, like those gwai lo eat their cold chicken only mah.. :p

    4. hahaha...those lou wong are over rated now la. Must ask the food Mayor of Ipoh. She will bring you to those very good makan place leh....I still remember the place where she bring me eat the special chicken wrapped in pig stomach. I know u dont like pig stomach but there have something in Pumpkin too. That one saw many people order. Next time go Ipoh must ajak Claire go to that shop to makan again. I like the food there.

wei sk you fast fast take up Claire offer leh. She knows all the best place to eat and wont get slaughter one neck blood punya. :)

  20. Good evening SK and everybody! It's Friday finally! And it's drizzling outside now, haha! Good, I just hope it'll continue to rain slightly heavier!
And water rationing is happening now at my place :( Went back my mum's place today and notice that the water supply drops so much! The water from the tape is like my son's pee pee, LOL! Luckily my mum already stored a few pail of water 2 days ago, if not, sure no water to bath and all.
Sigh, really wondering when can this stop?? My mum told me there was the water supply van coming 2 nights ago but since my mum already stored the water, she din't go and take. I wonder is the supply sufficient for the whole taman??

    1. Ok, back to your topic today, another food review!
I agree, comfort food need not to be fancy! And a real good food need not extra advertisement also, if the food is really yummy sure people will help promote and 一传十十传百,business sure gets better and better, can save up on advertisement fees, haha!
So this is not a paid post? But looking at your review, seems like you are paid to write for it leh! I mean like I said, you hardly blog about food so when you do, it means the food must be very yummy!
Chicken rice can be so common but it's something almost everyone like! Young or old, woman or man, all sure love a plate of chicken rice once a while. Though I am scared of eating too much rice, I won't mind having a plate of chicken rice once a while, the hainanese chicken rice is already so good to eat on its own! And yea, I agree with you, just the rice and soup is also very good already! So did you order extra rice? :p
Hmm, I don't think I know where is this restaurant (though I know petaling street, and jalan sultan sounds very familiar to me), but luckily you provide the full address and even the map! Can save it up~ How thoughtful!

      Delete
    2. Hmm, who said you are not a good food blogger? 'tenderly juicy steamed chicken, drizzled with light soy sauce and oil, garnished with spring onions.. and surely not to be missed, the homemade chili sauce and ginger paste to complement your chicken..', this sentence sounds like those advertisement slogan to me la! Hehe! Quite professional also ma!
Well to me, the most important thing I look when having chicken rice set is that whether the chicken is cooked enough! I remember once I notice the chicken is not cooked well and can still see the red bones and meat inside =_=" I immediately asked the tauke to come over and show him, and asked for another new set :p Luckily he understands and gave me another set of chicken without extra charges.
And I have to say I love the ginger paste very much! I am a person who loves anything ginger and I can really eat a lot of those paste! But at Taiping, most chicken rice stalls only provide the chili sauce but no ginger paste =_=

      Delete
    3. RM 5.50? Wow, that's quite cheap leh, considering it's at KL. I think Taiping is around that price also leh~ Nowadays no more super-cheap food in Taiping (got also la but have to depends whether you know how to locate or not), as it's developing and most food also becoming expensive already.
A bowl of wan tan mee can hit up to RM4 now, with no wat tan somemore~ And worse, it's not that delicious :( I guess many hawkers are targeting outsiders and more willing to do their business. But what to do? We still need to eat, so sometimes pay a bit expensive also have to lo~

But if really yummy then worth it also la right? 吃得开心,付得情愿~

      Delete
    4. yes, i think this kind of food review is rare huh?? because many foodie bloggers out there don't even bother to write about comfort food, but must go to high class and expensive places, and take tons of shots of the dishes that are more presentable.. haha, really like paid post meh?? but i think this restaurant doesn't even need to do so, they can finish selling their chicken rice within just a few hours, better business than many eateries lah, haha!! and like you say, 有麝自然香, they don't bother to advertise because people would have already know how good they are, or by words of mouth..

eih, it took me a while to think of how to describe the food more professionally lah, i have very limited foodie vocab so those are all i know, haha!! and yes RM5.50 is considered cheap in KL, other places not nice also can go up to RM6.00 a plate, aiyoh, i really find things very expensive leh.. and RM4 for noodles ah?? that was like a few years back lor, now cheapest also RM4.50 and i guess average is RM5.. errr, but what to do, still have to pay lor, 難道要很傷心的吃嗎?? 是沒有辦法呀~~ haha!!

    5. Hahaha, Hayley you're wrong...Taiping got one chicken rice shop giving ginger sauce leh. it is from Yes chicken rice... Dine in they give, but usually da pao only with chili sauce.

      Delete
    6. Hayley, recently I found one chicken rice stall quite nice to eat. It is pricey because they served with dark soy sauce egg. You can always say you don't want that.. but the chicken rice is very nice. I can't recall the corner kopitiam name jor, it is opposite I-care Pharmacy.

      Delete
    7. I will go there, if I find other places all packed with people.

      Delete
    8. maybe you need to request for the ginger paste if you tapao else they would assume you don't want?? nowadays must always tell the boss what you want lah.. like some places, if you don't mention you want a small one, they would just give you the big one, like that they can earn more mah..

      Delete
    9. Right now, everything also need to pay... later the taukeh sure ask additional RM1 to pay for the ginger paste.

      Delete
    10. wah, if they ask for RM1 for the ginger paste, sure i will ban that shop already..

      Delete
    11. That is onyl an example. But somehow, if we buy from the same stall frequently, usually they will notice us. So just ask them to give us the paste or add more extra sauce lor... if mood baik that day, definitely will not ask us to pay any extra. Right now, they act very smartly and attach a notice there stated properly - every extra rice or sauce need to add RM0.50 or RM1. Let say lar... who knows one day will liddat.

      Delete
    12. extra rice okay lah, that one expected to pay for it lah.. but then sauce, errr, not up to that level yet lah.. it's something extra for better customer service mah.. some will happily give, but some will scold the customer instead, hahahaha!! i've seen that before, the customer stunned and dunno what to do.. but i agree also, can try to be kawan-kawan with the boss lah, then what also can "seong leong" mah.. hehe!!

  22. Good morning, SK! Chicken rice! I like! I like! Your are right, those old school chicken rice shops are the best. I cannot tahan when I see chicken rice, I have to order it. I prefer the steamed chicken, so tender and so succulent. And good chilli sauce is a must. And of course the rice, very fragrant and delicious and I have to have two bowls. But I seldom go to that area.

Oh, and I like the tekan-tekan slideshow :)

    1. yeah, chicken rice is one of my favorite.. it's simple yet delicious (though i won't say the one who cooked it would say it's a simple thing), and i can even eat two bowls of rice just on their own without anything to go with, haha!! that's my weak point for flavored rice, ah, carbo loaded, you will again say, haha!!

yeah, the tekan thing is cool right?? i like to do that, but not all readers like that.. so i can only do sparingly, and alternating with the flat layout :p

    2. say simple but not easy to make leh. a lot of work. Gotta boil. then gotta "paint' the chicken . Then also put in ice water ba bla bla...I saw in Sonia's blog. I see so many steps leh. but her steam chicken look very nice leh. Can lawan with the steamed chicken in SK's photos.

    3. hehehe, i mean eat is simple but the cooking is surely very troublesome with so many things and steps!! fuyoh, meow also knows how to cook, but i think she lazy to do this only.. actually come to think of it, sometimes eat out also cheaper than cooking at home lor..

    2. WHo don't like chicken rice? Chicken rice is the normal/common food we will order everytime, everywhere and anyone definitely will like it one. SImple, nice and easy too. During the weekends, if we're not going anywhere else, hubby definitely will get a few packs of chciken rice for lunch. When it is the common food to have, almost every where also selling chicken and duck rice... There are many out there just like mushrooms... sedap or not, it depends to each and everyone liking. I think if someone don't have any experience in doing business, can start with chicken rice stall - i suggest. Bcos, it is common. who sells good or not, definitely will have good business. Hmm, talk so much here can understand what I'm to say?...hehehe...

Chicken rice for most has a standard price RM4.50, RM5.50 depends which part of the chicken meat we order. Yea, noodle also has a fix price, but for a man who is working, I don't think noodle is "kam pao". People usually will opt to have rice right? So that is why there is always an opportunity to make business with chicken rice shop.

      Delete
    3. yeah, i agree with you.. chicken rice is so common and also very popular lah.. look in almost all the coffee shop, there is always one chicken rice stall and always quite good business.. because just order and the rice will be served in no time, very convenient and also rice mah, very filling compared to noodles.. maybe that's why more people prefer to eat chicken rice.. and i actually can just eat the rice only without anything else, haha.. nowadays KL standard chicken rice average RM5 and if add char siew or siew yoke will be RM6.. i always order chicken breast so no issue, some who loves drumstick will have to pay RM1 more lor..

      Delete
    4. Breastmeat - I always say it is "sor zai yoke"... cos in our country breastmeat means no value meat... hehehe. But that will be most healthier one. Those who is smart definitely choose this part of meat because it contains more meat than the rest. Even oder KFC - no one will want chicken wings especially. hehehe... But if breastmeat in UK and Aus definitely is not cheap.

      Delete
    5. haha, how come you say it as "sor zai yoke"?? you mean "silly boy meat" ah?? errr, actually not because it contains more meat, if want more meat can just makan more lah.. i like it because it's lean and not so fat compared to thigh and drumstick.. and you are right, i think maybe most Asian prefers thigh/drumstick, and westerners probably prefer breast meat.. :)

      Delete
    6. My friends and I always said it is "Sor Zai Yoke" because not many people want to eat. Those drumstick and tigh's meat is more tender and sedap. Children prefer that part too. Hehehe, it is a say lar... not to meant those who love to eat "Sor zai yoke" can become a silly boy eh!....

      Delete
    7. Right now, I use breastmeat for boiling soup. Less fat too. I will use it more chicken salad too like Caeser Salad. Myself I prefer tighs meat and back bones part... not drumstick. For the kids, are easier for them to chew on those tender meat rather than breastmeat... I will only have chicken wings during BBQ session and Pizza Hut Delivery. Their deli chicken wings is superb yummy. So which part I like??? I can eat any part actually, as long as not their heads. Chicken legs stew with mushroom also very nice right?...hahaha

      Delete
    8. hahahaha, smart people only choose to eat breast meat, more meat and not many people want.. maybe drumstick and thigh are "sor jai yoke" to me lor, so many fats in there, once i eat until i jelak and cannot finish that.. actually if no choice i am also okay with any parts lah, but if i have got a choice, breast and ribs will be my preference lor.. like that if we share one chicken, then we kawan baik lah, since we will target different parts and no need to fight, haha~~

  27. Myself I prefer roasted chicken. I don't take pak zam kai outside. Unless, prepared by my MIL or my mom. B'cos I don't like to see the red blood thing leh. I find the chicken is not cook lor..in my mind. Sorry ya for those who like to eat pak zam kai. Well, this is normal lar. People said and my mom always said, overnight fridge chicken definitely will have one. Not only the red blood, but even it's fat clot or we always say chicken fat can be seen... yucks!!!

    1. I love to have yellow rice rather, more fragrant than white plain rice..But kenot have it all the time, is very fattening. They said, usually they use the chicken fats to cook it so that is why so fragrant and delicious.

Here we have a chicken rice stall here - the price is reasonable and worth it. Rice alot and chicken meat also banyak.

Normal chicken rice RM3.50, if I'm not wrong. Char Siew+chicken =RM4, Char Siew+Chicken+Siu Yoke=RM4.50 (If order drumstick and tigh chicken meat then is RM5). Very "Tai Sek" one.

    2. Another chicken rice we have at Taiping is quite famous already.. that is why the rpice shoot up high. One family - Danny, Me, Calvin and Hebe... We order a mix platter and with 3 plate of rice, + drinks(usually 2cups of leng teh+ ice tea). The bill will come RM30+, hmm almost the same price like we have at Meng Kee, Glenmarie. This shop is call Kok Beng chicken rice. This shop also famous for the their char siew. If to da pao only char siew and rice, it will cost RM5.

    3. Just like last weekend, chicken rice selling like hot cakes. most of the stall all sold out. Qing ming - everyone come back from all the places... many stalls food - are all sold out very early, as early as 12pm. So no choice, have to da pao from the not so famous one lor...

    5. i prefer steam chicken, but sometimes also will go for roast chicken lah.. and no an issue for me lor, those not cooked and blood oozing.. because i always ask for chicken breast one, this part always lean and cooked.. but if those drumstick and thigh sure could be uncooked.. so i think you are one who love these dark meat part of a chicken, hehe~~

wah RM3.50 for standard chicken rice in Taiping, so cheap leh.. here already RM5 a plate for standard one, want to add on anything will be from RM1 additional onwards lor.. aiyoh just 4 of you and spent RM30 on chicken rice?? quite expensive woh.. but if nice then never mind lah..

haha.. chicken rice is common and popular and filling mah, sure many people like, especially guys :p

RM5.50 is cheap la with a lot of meat. I assume no cucumber underneath the chicken to make the portion look bigger hor? Been to some chicken rice shop where they put the cucumber under the meat. At first glance see wahhhhh so much meat ah...but then korek out...under it is all cucumber an the smelly vegetables :(
