if you were to join packaged tours, i guess going to both shanghai and beijing at the same time would be quite rare.. hence in year 2007 while i was still considered young and strong, i did this "trips of the two cities" one shot to fulfill my wish to visit these two biggest cities of mainland china.. of course with a DIY trip, we got to go where we like, and more importantly avoid being brought to contribute to many souvenirs shops, hehe!!
  • with the help of friend, we took a local carrier to fly to beijing from shanghai, and she has also arranged her friend to take care of us in beijing.. we stayed in beijing for 4 days and thank you so much to this friend's hospitality and "beijing survival tips", that our first time in beijing was a smooth one..
  • i actually like beijing and compared to shanghai, i personally think there are way more things the experience and more places to visit in beijing..
  • perhaps due to my interest in chinese history, i was so excited for being able to be present at historical sites like the forbidden city, temple of heaven, the great way and the summer palace.. but i realized we just spent half a day in the forbidden city, for such a huge place with so much to see, i find that quite unbelievable for my short visit~~ :p
  • while in beijing, i finally felt the crowd of the huge chinese population.. especially when taking the beijing subway, it's where i felt the strong force of being pushed from all directions when i was trying to board or leave the train.. @_@"
  • i kind of blogged about this trip to shanghai back then, all in chinese and photos were so tiny even a magnifying glass could not help.. however they did record my views and incidents that has happened at those particular moments.. click here if you are interested to read on..

    3. i was there in summer and yes, i have to agree it was so dry and hot, but i don't think i sweat a lot actually.. oh, it was a halal tour, that's a different kind of experience huh??

errr, packaged tour will bring you to those local specialties shop lah, souvenirs shop lah, chinese medicine shop lah etc and make you spend more one.. i think better plan your own trip lah.. get somebody who knows Chinese to tag along i would suggest if you are worry about language problem..

      Delete
    4. Yalah, I agree with SK.

Go with tour groups there, feel like kena fleeced by both the tour guide (who brought us to all those pricey places) and by the shops too!

Waste a lot of time at shops we never care to see also instead of sight seeing. Just stop the bus to take photo then board the bus again and repeat several times. Long stop only at shops. tsk tsk

      Delete
    6. oh yeah, like what lina has commented.. going with tour groups, probably ended up as shopping trip only, and you only have 20 minutes break time to go for each of the attractions - just get down the coach, take photos and then continue to another shop, hahahahaha!!

errr, true also lah meow.. really have to get the gang right.. but i think plan things early to book everyone first lah.. :)

  6. Wow! I saw Clark Kent Ah Boy in Beijing! I like your pose! Damn signature and I will do it next time! Heh heh

So you flew from Shanghai to beijing without joining any tour. That is heavenly trip without having to visit their native products and souvenir factories! I had a miserable time joining the tour to Beijing for 9 days!! We were taken to Tianjin and Chengde as well.

I managed to see the Underground City which was the best eye opener in China to me. It has since been closed again to public. I went there in the Year 2002 during the hot summer season. It was blazing like Chinese wok there with soaring temperatures.

hahahaha, let me imagine STP doing that pose.. probably he will end up falling flat on the street!! ooopss, hope dogs didn't pee at the spot he falls :D

    2. Yes, China is very crowded! I can't imagine what it is like in the subway, sure packed like sardine!
Oh so that's your signature pose? Haha, funny but very yeng la! Forbidden city is such a huge place right? Walked till legs also pain lo? But I think it's worth it la! See there're so much to see!

    5. I think it must be tiring shopping around China too right? The crowd must be crazy! Can bargain with them? Lots of things to buy?

      Delete
    6. i would actually prefer DIY trips more, especially in established places.. can plan my own itinerary and places i want and do not want to go accordingly, more relaxed lor.. however if those ulu places, then of course packaged ones will be more beneficial..

yes, i think chinese history is kind of interesting right?? i especially like the 清朝.. and the Forbidden City is really huge, i think i didn't see that in details, else half a day won't be enough.. and the Great Wall of China, surely must visit lah, haha!! you'll actually feel different when you step and climb on the great wall.. the Summer Palace also very nice, everywhere you can find beautiful scenery, and of course taken lots of photos there, haha!! different a bit from the Forbidden City lah..

yes, and i think i took the subway during peak hours and you can imagine that, haha!! errr, actually didn't have much time shopping in Beijing.. we concentrated more on the historical sites, shopping should be similar to Shanghai lah we thought..

    3. Sk, I think you can consider blogging about "beijing survival tips" for those blind people like me. At least wont be blur blur in what to do and what not to do there. I know a lot of things is common sense but at times what is correct and acceptable in Malaysia may not be so in Beijing. Sometimes we tend to assume what we have here and there will be the same.

      Delete
    4. Experience being pick-pocketed and cheated? No, thank you...

      Delete
    5. yalah, this STP always put bad prejudice first on things, that is what stopping him from trying new things lah.. we must be more open, this world is so huge and there are so many things to see and to learn :)

haiyoh, i also forgotten what those "beijing survival tips" were lah.. 6 years ago that was!! actually not really surviving tips, but mainly directions on how to get to the places we wanted to go :)

    6. What a narrow minded fella! I would not be holed up at home lah. I will just swipe cards and travel as much as I can to see the horrors and filth of those interesting countries. 8. O & P: Wang Fu Jing is so crowded with tourists. There are so many souvenir's shop. My gosh! I think I'll spend lots of my time there shopping. Can we bargain? I heard from my friends, Beijing or Shanghai's shopping complex is very grand type one. I think, those historical places like Great Wall of China, The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven or the Kunming lake are much worth to visit than shopping complex right?

      Delete
    9. ah yes, exactly the places we saw on drama series.. but i think the Forbidden City we saw on TV may be the real one in Beijing, i know they have another place in Hengdian which resembles Forbidden City..

hahaha, of course lah, my signature pose must be there every place i went!! and yes, Forbidden City and Great Wall of China and probably Summer Palace are must-go if you are in Beijing, indeed nice place to be also.. haha, concubines sure got nothing much to do inside the palace, so they can only think of what to do in that Imperial Garden..

yeah, my friend's friends were indeed very hospitable.. nope, they had to work so we went to those places on our own, but of course before we went they gave us direction and tips.. very grateful to them really..

no idea really on what that marble boat was for, i think probably for the Emperor and his concubines to dine while enjoying the scenery of the lake.. what's that i was wearing on my neck?? oh, that's the audio guide, when you walked to different spot, they have a sensor to narrate the story/history of that spot.. very useful gadget and it's free (charged to the entrance fees la).. :)

hahaha.. didn't do much shopping actually, most of the time were given to visit tourists and historical attractions.. just did little shopping in Beijing and Shanghai, errr, i like the idea of a shopping district, just concentrate on that particular street and no need to go elsewhere.. convenient..

    2. I also prefer to tour Beijing instead of Shanghai which is very different from each other. Even their local folks speak Mandarin with different accent.

Some China folks told me that Beijing is the most interesting place in the whole China with the most well preserved historical sites. So if we are only allowed to visit one place in China during our lifetime, it is should be BEIJING!!!!

  38. Wonderful building in the temple of heaven where not a single nail was used to fasten the wooden structures. Also Bananaz was fascinated by the numerology of 9 with the repeated 9 circles of stones where the emperor would have a direct connection to God during the prayers when standing right in the center.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh indeed the Temple of Heaven has got lots of architectural wonders.. besides the no-nail structures and the 9 circles, they have other numerology too.. like 4 major pillars in the building to represent 4 seasons, 12 middle and 12 outer pillars represent the 12 months and 12 hours of a day (in ancient chinese they divided a day into 12 hours), the 24 pillars represents 24 types of weather in a year, and the total 28 pillars represents the 28 types of stellar phenomenon.. interesting huh?? :)

  48. I'm also of the opinion that there's more to see and do in Beijing than in Shanghai. There are tours that go to these two places but not so many. Most of the tours cover Beijing, Chengdu and a few other cities near Beijing while the tours to Shanghai would cover Suzhou a few others near there.

I think when it comes to population impact, we'd feel it most in China and India.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah, very little tours that go to both cities, it's either Beijing and few places around, or Shanghai and few places nearby.. probably because flight is needed to travel between these two cities.. and yes, i do think Beijing is a place with more things to see.. oh, population impact, soon it will be India overtaking China :)

    1. Photo B: I have been hearing that the Forbidden City is the biggest palace in the world. After googling the facts, I think they have the largest built up size palace which contains 9000 rooms!! Crazy lah!!! 9000 rooms and not 900 rooms!!
The Sultan of Brunei's palace grounds cover bigger land area only.

We tourists had to walk in a long straight line across the Forbidden City and not allowed to wander off to see the quarters of officials and concubines. I wanted to see the wells where some were thrown inside!

    2. Photo C: It was so huge and took so many years to build them by artisans and wood carvers across the country. The best thing is that the architecture was well preserved till now. I bet it has something to do with the 4 seasons climate that helped to preserve the woods. From my travels across Asia, I noticed that old buildings in Tropical countries became decayed easily due to the acid rains and high humidity which also encouraged termites to breed! In China, all the termites and kutus will die in Winter! It makes sense right?

    5. Photo F: When I was young, nobody was allowed to visit China yet during their closed door years after the cultural revolutions BUT I was always being attracted by this Temple Of Heaven's building. Well, again it was used by so many product manufacturers and it sort of etched into my brains. I grew up thinking of it and when I got married, I decided to see the real building.

I wanted to cry my heart out when I stood outside this magnificent building that was built without nails. So awesome!!!!

Did you go beneath to see the tunnel where the animals marched to the kitchen to be slaughtered as offerings?? So scary and sad place actually when you go beneath. The Chinese architects were so clever to build the tunnel instead of delivering live animals via the backdoors!

    6. Photo G: I was impressed by the length of its Great Wall. I lost count on the number of cities I crossed and saw the amazing Great Wall. I plan to complete my Silk Road journey someday and I read the websites that the Great Wall spanned until the North to Urumqi and Dunhuang as well. I was shocked lah.

Who was the only person who walked across this thick Great Wall? - David Copperfield!!

    7. Photo H: Wow! you climbed the whole wall and got a certificate? I did but my stupid tour was in a hurry and I just had to forgo the cert!!! Anyway I see that the cert will not be any use or help to apply for Visas! Muahahahahaha

The steps are really so steep and my long legs were aching. I was thinking that it must have been tough for the short ancient soldiers to run across when their warlords ordered them to battle and shoot down the enemies below. How did they climb so fast and easily with short legs??? Maybe the old soldiers were tall but I have seen the actual sizes of Terracota Warriors in Xian who were shorter than Anay. China folks were amazing then, we missed out this part on how they ran!!

Did you know where they dumped all the earth which was being dug out to form the huge man made Kunming Lake???

They used it to form the large hills beside and built the palace on top to look magnificent!! How clever!!! I learn about this fact from watching the Korean soap dramas this year!!

    1. Photo O: I missed this Wanfujing Street. My tour took us there briefly after seeing the food street. They would prefer us to shop at their own shopping areas to collect commissions! That's the price I had to pay for joining the hectic and screwed up tour! I was so cheapo and chose the cheapest tour for my honeymoon! I only paid RM1388 for 9 days tour to Beijing, Tianjin and Chengde which was flown by Singapore Airlines!!! It was such an eye opener trip for me to see weird Malaysian tourists and China folks. Those days they were still spitting everywhere like rain in 2002. The toilets were more filthy and ridiculous of course!
