25.07.2013 | 戲院開餐

[Volume 8 Issue 7, #1761]
if you were born before the 90s, i bet you remember those old style cinemas back then, where we could freely bring anything we like to eat and drink into the cinema.. so there were all kinds of crackers and kuaci, there were drinks packed in plastic bags tied with a nylon string, there were cut fruits sprinkled with asamboi in plastic bags, there were burgers with eggs and dripping chili sauce wrapped in papers, there were boxes of fried chicken etc.. of course with the modern cineplexes nowadays, to ensure the comfort of all patrons, we are only allowed to bring in limited types of food and beverages sold at the cinema counters.. being malaysians we are so pampered to have quite a variety of choices from popcorn to chips to hotdogs to fishballs, but i would strongly suggest fishballs to be banned because they really smell horrible inside the cinema!! hate the neighbours having them really, are you watching movie or having your picnic??!! on another note, we know that's the monopoly strategy in which the cinema force us to buy more expensive food and beverages.. i am one patron who is so not willing to pay the extras, so at times i just "smuggle" things bought from supermarket (which is so much cheaper) into the cinema.. by the way, how many of you did that or still do that?? hahaha~~ :D

  2. I just cannot understand why people have to eat when in the cinema watching a movie... Imagine someone eating sotong - it smells nice when you're the one eating but when you're not the one doing it, the stench can be unbearble... My time, the cracking of the kuaci would drown out the dialogue in the movie and I really hated it.

  4. I have no qualms about food. What's unbearable is when the one sitting behind you keep pushing your seat with his foot. Perhaps blame it on the narrow space between seats.

    1. Food monopoly is smart business sense. The way around it is to smuggle in your own chips and such though they make a lot of noise which could drown out the dialogue. Ohh..

On the other hand, it's probably a good idea to cut down on the type of food allowed. I heard there used to be rats running over your feet in the old days. Bed bugs are another to contend with. Pity girls with miniskirts or people in shorts.

    5. ooo people pushing with feet is still bearable....just imagine tghe fella put his stinky feet in between the celah between the two seat...stinky feet near your head wor....damn irritating.

Usually last time when i go cinema i select the seat from the middle row where no seat behind me. So much more comfortable

  5. Good morning and all! I love to eat popcorns in the cinema. But I will take my own plain drink. Never like gasy drinks as I might have the urge to visit the toilet.

  8. Oh, yaya, I remember. When I was younger there was a cinema here called Lido, they sell all sorts of snacks and drinks! I used to buy kuaci and dried squids whenever I go into the cinema! Now that you mentioned, I miss that time la!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Now, there's also ONE cinema at Taiping (MBO), haha xD
But they have limited choices of snacks only, dried junk food like Twisties, popcorn, and soft drinks. Unlike GSC/TGV, they have sausages/sandwiches, so 'lao yea'~

      Delete
    2. So I always smuggle outside food into the cinema, haha! But all also are dried stuff la, like prunes/chocolates etc, I am considerate one, I won't let the people around me smell horrible stuff, cause I'd hate to be the victim too!

But have to be careful cause the staff sometimes will spot check the ladies bags, so I always cover those outside food properly, kekeke :p

      Delete
    3. I think nowadays many people also smuggling outside food into the cinema la! As long as don't bring heavy-flavored food and chewing gum, and make sure to throw the plastic bag at a side, then should be ok la!

      Delete
    4. We have a cinema called Lido here also, hehe...

    5. last time cinema sell all sorts of food la . even those steam kacang also have. But now only have popcorn and hot dogs.

Usually i will smuggle plain water, chocolate and the asamboi to eat in the cinema. Not kuaci l. Too noisy and duno where to throw

      Delete
  9. Rarely go to cinemas nowadays.

But when I do, I'll just buy popcorns and soft drinks.

I hate it when people go in with hot dogs and stuff.

What is more annoying is those smelly food are allowed to be sold by the cinema management! @.@

    1. Talking about cinema today? What a coincidence. Cos I'm planning to bring my son for a movie tomorrow night.

      Delete
    2. Me? same like others as well, I smuggled light and easy snack in the cinema too. Seaweed and peanuts. With kids, usually I need to bring a tumbler of water for my son.

      Delete
    3. Sometimes chocolate and sweets. My son and I love the Shark Nestle crunchy chocolate waffle sandwich. Nice you should try it too.

      Delete
    4. Anything I smuggled in, I always arrange and pack it well in my bag. So no one will suspect I bring anything go in the cinema too. If unlucky, they will check my bag. So far, Nope! Hehehe...

    5. Well, sometimes we just boughta combo meal - 2mineral waters and a popcorn will do. Who doesn't want to eat popcorn...

  13. In the 90's, during my time, Taiping have 3 major cinemas - Lido, Cathay and Mandarin cinema. Later on, no more ady. The best was still the retro look - Lido. Usually, boys will bring the gals to watch a movie - phak thor lar. Guess that is the most romantic outing during that time.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lido cinema's air cond is more cooling and more a variety of movies/shows. The best was a stall attached beside the cinema selling all kinds of junk food, snack and soft drinks. The best was they sell ais kacang and laksa. My parents and my uncle will brought us there even without a movie.

      Delete
    2. For the snacks usually people will buy kuaci - black & sunflower seeds, dried sotong "jiu hu" and of couse can drinks... People brought in the cinema just liddat. So eventually, disturbing people is one thing but making the whole cinema dirty is a bad idea right?

      Delete
    3. Imagine, the cleaner staffs sleeping the floor, stage by stage. But when another movie is screening, again the cleaner staffs need to do all over again.

      Delete
    4. The cleaners still operate like that now.

Just because nobody eats kuaci anymore, dopesn't mean cinema patrons now are any less messy than in yesteryears.

I've seen mess made on AA flights that can make kuaci mess look like a good mess. o.O

      Delete
    5. They will still leave the popcorn boxes and what ever bottles and cups there in the cinema. But at least they dont have to sweep the kuaci or peanut shells from the floor la.

Me if go cinema will bring away what ever sampah to throw outside la. Not nice to leave it there for people to clean up though if no sampah then the cleaners would be out of job

      Delete
    6. "no sampah then the cleaners would be out of job"

      DOn't say that lah.

Cleaners job not only pick up our sampah what.

How about the upkeep and cleanliness of the place.

Our house not messy also, we vacuum and mop at least once a day.

      Cobwebs lagi. Dust.

    1. I am fierce inside the cinema and would not hesitate to turn my head to yell at them!!! If the kids cry or make noise non stop, I would sigh loudly and say Ssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!....

You will hear the mother quickly quieten the kid and say that uncle in front is angry!!! If the kid reapeats, I would Sssshhhhhhhhhhhhhh AGAIN!

      Delete
    2. When the blardy idiotic patrons behind still kicked my chair from behind after my warning, I would throw pop corns to the back!!!! He would stop kicking my chair after getting pop corns and cut fruit pieces from me. Muahahahahahaha

    3. TM, good morning. Guess no one is here since everyone is enjoying their sleeps.

      Delete
    4. WHat you've mentioned is very true. Not to say mother with a toddler can't go in the cinema. But I'm sure almost every mother will know how their children react in the cinema. One thing, they can't even seat still. Cry is another thing... But these will disturb other people from watching movie lor...

      Delete
    5. If that guy kicked my chair once. I can forgive him, maybe he did it not in purpose. But if he keep kick and kick...or maybe the 4th or 5th time, I will turn my face behind and look at him and said please don't kick the chair again.

Some they know what they did is wrong and they will straight away apologize. Without I turn my face behind. hahaha...

      Delete
    6. Anyway watching a movie will take about 1.5hrs-2.5hrs. Can't we have a peace of mind to watch the movie withour any disturbance? Mobile phone didn't switch off the main one...

      Delete
    7. I kind of understanding how annoying when hearing kids crying in the middle of movie. That is why I didn't bring my kids to cinema before they turned 4. And, if I bring I only bring them to cartoons or animations, then there will be more children and parents. So it won't disturb others in the cinema especially those movies adults need lots of concentration.

    8. wow...anay so fierce one ah...anay look so mellow wor...didnt know anay have a fierce side.

Me chicken la..will turn head stare at them . Dare not throw popcoirn at them la. Wei waste of food and money leh throw at them.

But usually maybe my stare is "fierce" enough so they tarak kick anymore hahaha

      Delete
    9. Not to say we kenot bring the kids to the movie. Depends on what movie we are watching, if kids movie... no problem. But too small better don't lar.. The kids also will not feel comfortable inside the cinema...

  15. Good evening bloggers! I am so late today! Anay damn busy like a BEE! Bosses went out of town and I went to lepak with agents to have long lunch.

Today's topic is my favourite of course. SK Thambee knows that Anay is a movie king!

I go to watch movies at least once a week and twice at the maximum!! To me watching movies is very entertaining and relaxing to help Letchumy destress her mind. When she is glued at the movie screen, her thoughts would be distracted and mental stress will be gone after 1.5 hours. There is no better way to relieve mental other than watching movies at only RM10. If you go for massage, you need to spend at least RM50 for 1 hour. I always try hard to get rid of stress because it is number killer that causes cancer and high blood pressure. STRESS KILLS!

    1. I used to buy snacks from the stupid robbery stalls outside the cinema until I freaked out one day. I have been eating Famous Amos which costs me RM18.00 for mere 200 gms!!!! CB!!! Then i drank Ribena at RM3.50 per bottle. Adoi.... Soemtimes I ate their caramel pop corns too! Bah!

So I have been going to supermarkets to buy Lay's potato chips at only RM7.00+ per big bag!!! I would make my own bottle of chilled Ribena from home which probably costs me only 20 cents ONLY!!!!!!! I would put them inside my big recycle bags and walk in like an aunty to have picnic and watch movies. So heavenly!

    2. During Anay's childhood days, there were so many types of cinemas in Penang. I remember that smoking was even allowed inside the non air cond or air cond cinemas!! It was so suffocating but nobody bothered then. Everyone seemed to enjoy second hand smoke at that time.
Those without air cond had giant fans blowing from all corners and your hair would fly left & right like swaying coconut trees! You would spend time sweeping your hair. I was so short that my head ducked below the seats to shield from the blowing fans. If that show was at night, the cinema operators would pull the string and the roof would open up for cool fresh air to come in!!! Sometimes you could see the moon in the skies!!! Muahahahahaha

I am not kidding okay, you can ask Bananaz!!!

      Delete
    3. I didn't know that eating fish or sotong balls would be smelly. Those balls must be rotten and stank like shit!! Gross!

During my young days, I remembered many people ate fruit rojaks which were wrapped in paper!!! after eating the patrons would throw on the floor!!! When the shows were over, poor anay often stepped on the rojak paper and all the belacan paste would smear onto my slippers and feet!!! CB! CB! CB!
Sometimes I also stepped onto the jagungs which have been finished and thrown onto the floor too.

I think the worst was the RED INDIAN brand bubble gums!!!!!!!!! Argh! The bastards would spit the gums onto the floor or stick them on the seats. I lost count on the number of times I stepped or sat on the spitum bubble gums!!! It would stick like glue onto me and followed me for 5 feet like a clothes line!!! Arghhhh!!!!

All the old cinemas in Penang had lots of big rats and cockroaches inside!!!! Once a rat ran across the seats and dashed pass a girl's shoulder. She stood up and screamed out hysterically like crazy. Everyone laughed as it was in the middle of a ghost movie!! Adoi!!!

Some moron parents even allowed their small kids to urinate onto the floor at the side of the cinema's corners in the dark as the toilet was too far away and the child could not stand any longer!!! That really happened and all these horrid memories are flooding back to anay's heads!!

      Delete
    4. Málai vanakkam! Alo Anay aiyoyo why 'pai ngor seong toy' [canto: lit. put me on the table]? haha.

      Delete
    5. TM very true those days when after a movie our shirt would smell terribly and can imagine how much of second hand smoke we have inhaled over the years. Cannot recall the roof top thingy but normally at night the exit doors would be opened to allow more air to come in. Yup kuaci shells, jagung and melon skins etc were all over the floor.

      Delete
    6. Wonder you did anything mischievous like what Bananaz (think 10-11 years old then) did sprinkling fireworks on the walkway in cinema and when stepped on would produce sound and sparks? (Bad influence from comic 'Dennis the Menace') haha. That is nothing compared to one Canadian blogger 'Uncle Lee' who releases snakes and crabs in KL cinemas in his younger days.

      Delete
    7. Since we are not allowed to take outsiders food go in, that is why they monopoly the price of the popcorns, snacks and drinks... For sure is much expensive than outside. Once a while is ok lar...

    8. Olden days cinema was the place I started my romantic dates with my jin jin. But then, I tell ya, my jin jin loved watching movie without any snack one. Even now, he only catered for the kids, and not me and him.

    9. Wah anay still have time to go movie every week ah. Yeah nice to de-stress some times. Just watch movie no need to think of anything.

Hard for me to do coz J cannot sit still halfway will wanna go toilet wanna this and that

wei those Lay chips very moisy la the pavket when you open. Nobody stare at you ka? I dare not coz of thenoise. Put hands into the packet then got noise....later kena people throw popcorn at me then malu lor

Yea...those old days memang like that. Even ah pek also bring hand fan and kipas while smoking ciggy.

Nw try do that kena kick out from cinema jor LOL

Oh ya hor...those horrible bubble gums...me kena a few times before at the hand rest and the seat. Damn it...i curse the fella to his/her 18 generation ah...cilaka one split bubble gums every where.

So far tarak kena the jauung and the rojak before. I think the rojak shrimp paste can lawan with the dried sotong in the cinema in terms of stinkiness

You urinate where? Inside or outside the cinema?

Last time i will tahan tuill find a toilet far far away from cinema toilet. The cinema toilet usually super duper dirty. some with shit on the floor even ...yuck....then puddle of water everywhere. dont know whether its urine or water....

You know the Old Klang Road Full Gospel Assemble chursh? It used to be a cinema. I used to watch movie there. still remember watvhing the first "Alien" there. And saw one big rat running across the balcony. LOL...

People say that cinema is haunted. But thank goodness i never saw a ghost before la but then again i dare not go their toilet alone la. always ask friend to teman.

That was why it was converted into a church they say. dont know how true is that.
