31.10.2012 | 滿天神佛

[Volume 7 Issue 10, #1584]

in the world of most of the chinese, especially those who are followers of taoism (but i rather find nowadays many people tend to see taoism and buddhism as one religion already), there are a lot of gods and goddesses who exist in the heaven as well as in the hell, simply this is a world full of deities.. although i am not a devoted one, but when i see altar of any deities i will show my respect, especially we have a place for the goddess of mercy and the ancestors at home, before going out i will offer incense to them.. they say the more you pray the more blessings you will get, but i sometimes think since i pray to any of them, would that actually cause conflicts?? i once heard somebody jokingly said, the buddha and goddess of mercy were in conflict because they are trying to protect the same person who has asked for blessings from both of them!! haha, it's quite a nonsense but just treat this as a joke, as i think most probably it's that they all can stay in harmony.. HAPPY HALLOWEEN to all readers!! :)

    11. This topic is very sensitive and I never dare to blog about religions or politics. Everyone has their own strong subjective opinions.

    14. Religion is a touchy subject but I always feel it is a very personal thing. Whatever one does, it's strictly between one and his/her higher authority and everyone is answerable to one's own actions.

However, I believe karma is a law of nature - but sadly not everyone sees it that way. My two cents.

    15. True! True! Between you and who you believe in...but unfortunately, many would want you to follow their way...which they will say is the right way, others are all wrong.

STP, I thought you are going "missing" after the first comment? How come you are still here at 2PM?

I don't have any deities at home; in laws and hubb aren't very religious (I guess) but my parents have Goddess of Mercy on the altar :)

  2. I'm a Christian but I believe anything that teaches people to be good, to love and respect one another is good. Let us pray that we will always be abundantly blessed each passing day in our lives...

    1. Regardless which religion we observed, most important is how we conduct ourselves. All religions teach us the basic common thing - to be filial to our elders, to love, be kind and respect to all.

  3. "...they say the more you pray the more blessings you will get..." Love is selfless, not selfish. Pray not for oneself but for others and when they are blessed, you too are blessed as well.

    5. Gee superstorm Sandy had a twin sister in Miri? Talking about storm and flood am sure most must have heard about this joke. A guy at Big Apple climbed to the rooftop when superstorm Sandy hits town and flooded the whole neighborhood. A rescue boat came he but refused to hop in insisted God will help him. As the water level reached the rooftop, a helicopter came but adamantly said God shall rescue him until finally he went up and was furious with God for not saving his life. God replied 'I have sent you the rescue boat and the helicopter'.

    7. Have you heard this one about three sexy ladies, sentenced to death by gunfire?

The first one stood in front and as they raised the guns to shoot at her, she shouted: Hurricane! Hurricane! All ran for cover...and she quickly escaped.

Then, it was the second one's turn. As they raised the gun to aim at her, she shouted: Earthquake! Earthquake! Everyone ran for cover...and she too quickly escaped.

The third one, a blonde, saw what had happened...and she could get the idea of what was going on and she smiled to herself. As soon as they raised the guns to point at her, she shouted:
      FIRE!!! FIRE!!!!

      LOL!!!!

  9. My house altar table has ancestors of my husband, Kuan Gung, Tei Zhu Gung, and Ti Gung.
Opposite to SK, I pray to all Ang Gungs when I came back from work in the evening. Every 1st and 15th of the Chinese Lunar Month, I will go to Guan Yin temple to pray.

SO, I consider myself as taoism. Almost every Saturday evening, I bring my girls to Buddhist Society to do buddhism chanting. So I am also a buddhism. Like SK said, taoism and buddhism as one religion.

Whenever we need to fill up our religion in a form, there is only option of Buddhism, Islam and Christian. There is always no taoism and Catholic. So, I believe many people also find Christian and Catholic as one religion, no?

    1. I only pray on the 1st and 15th of the Chinese calender too. My husband will buy all those fruits and kuih. Regarding religion, I will just put myself as a Buddhist. But actually I'm considered a free thinker.

    2. the so-called 'christian' in malaysia actually refers to the branch called 'protestantism', whcih consists of baptist, methodist, presbyterian etc etc. catholics are rightfully considered christians, and the faith itself is a branch of christianity - though minority radical protestants oppose the designation of this. and in the christian world, 'christians' are more than the catholic and protestant branches that we malaysians know. in eastern europe, they have the orthodox christians. in the middle east, they have the assyrians and the coptic christians.

  10. "拜得神多自有神庇祐" i believe in this all the while. Don't get me wrong I am not 迷, but I am信.

And I always think "Hands that Help are Better than Lips that Pray"

All religions want people being filial to elderly, being helpful to others. Buddishm taught me to be filial and helpful.

  11. deities only exist as a divine being in taoism. buddhism doesn't preach these. in fact, buddhism is non-theistic - it is atheistic in nature and for the salvation of oneself, one has to depend on his own to escape from the wheel of rebirth. the so-called "clashes between deities" are a traditional folk religion concept, and has nothing to do with buddhism.

buddhist concept is essentially 与世无争, so if the buddhas "fight" over the believers, then it will render this very concept self-contradictory.

and the reason why taoism, buddhism, etc gets mixed up and campur-aduk together is due to the syncretism of the original religion with the folk beliefs, and is a norm for many countries. the religion at its very root is free from the influences of each other.

  13. I strongly believe in 举头三尺有神明. So, don't do bad things, 天知,地知,鬼神知, the nature of Karma may take control of you one day.

Every one will harvest the fruit that you planted earlier. This is called 自食其果.

    1. agree! some ppl do bad things all his life and we wonder why he still gets to live so freely or blessed with wealth etc... It's just that the time has not come for him to suffer from the karma that he has planted.. 不是因果不报,而是时机未到。
