Stay Alert, Don't Get Hurt
Be Careful: Stay Alert and Don't Get Hurt

since i was in standard one at age 7, i already took public bus to school all by myself.. i still remember i had to board the bus before 6:30am to avoid traffic congestion.. so it was all dark and i had to walk hundreds of metres from home to the bus stand, and then from the bus stand to school.. nope, i have never had the luxury to be chauffeured right to the gate of school for my entire schooling life, yet i did not ever feel scared or unsafe back then at all..

that was more than two decades ago, of course we understand this could never happen nowadays.. children are (or shall i say, must be) all chauffeured and escorted to school, even that does not necessarily mean total safety.. we have seen shocking news on kidnappings, robberies and murders almost every several days, leave aside children, even we adults do not feel safe walking down dark alleys, driving at night, be it alone or in group.. worst still, crimes choose no time but happen under daylight and the witness of public.. even if one tries to do good for justice, one could end up thrown down from building, bombed into ashes or chucked into cement barrel.. extremely scary!! our safety is threatened, what has happened to our society?? why are we not reasonably protected under enforcement??

  1. And people have changed. Circumstances dictate behaviour - which also begs the question, are we progressing? Boils down to changes may not mean progress but on the contrary. Good morning!

  2. Back then, I even walked to school when I was 11. It's so peaceful then and not just me, even most of my schoolmates also did that. Of course, we stayed nearby to the school and it's just a 20 mins walk.

Nowadays, I can't even afford to let my eyes off my kids for a moment, even in a mall.

    1. Yeah you better not look at the aunties and bimbos inside the mall too much. You need to hold your kids' hands tightly and watch every step.
Your kids also need to watch you closely as the kidnappers might target you too after mistaking Lee Kah Shingg for you. Muahahaha

    2. Anay, now you mention, I realise also ChrisAu looks very much alike Lee Kah Sing, the multi billionaire in HKG. ChrisAu, you better wear contact lens or keep some mustache. Otherwise, people will kidnap you also.

    5. LOL....SK....20 minutes walk coz halfway he stopped and see lenglui mah. hence the delay la ...just joking ah..

But possible 20minutes walk la. I have friends who walk to school from 4 1/2 miles leh. some times i malas wait for school bus I also go walk to 4 1/2 mles to take bus home. got like 20minutes walk la.

Wah....Chris you walk so long when you are 11 years old ah.. Like that mah ver "geng" lo in sports. Got stamina to participate in sports ma

Nowadays they dun wanna kidnap Lee Kah Shing la. Not viaable. Too many bodyguards and things like that. They wanna kidnap pun kidnap those moderate rich type la. Those tarak bodyguard ma and easier to extort money from.

Beggars also not safe leh. They will kidnap and sell their organs for transplant

Walked a long way from house to bas stand leh.. "Mai hai kam", nothing happened.. But hor, now cannot already la, where dare?

    3. Teenage girls, say wana go movie with friends, parents also tag along.. They say wana lunch first, then movie, parents say ok.. But parents fetch.. Then parents eat with them, but sit separately, maybe at the next table.. Then movie time, parents also buy same tickets, but sit at the back.. "Hai kam ger la", what to do..

    4. Kids bigger jor, easy a bit.. Like if school close or daycare close, can just stay at home.. Then maybe parents snake home during lunch time to check on them.. But if kids still small how? Haiz, parents need to take emergency leave.. Menyusahkan orang.. But take leave better than let them roam around in the house, later curi go out, kena kidnap, sigh, problem jugak..

    5. Yep, you are right, stay alert, be on your toes, beware of surroundings.. If can, stay home lor.. Like if both parents can come out, then ok la, can take kids also.. If dad not free, mum stay home with kids lor.. Imagine bring 2-3 kids out, how wor..

    6. The kids today are more precious than diamonds and gold!

When wifey taught at the most expensive private school in Damansara Hts, one could see the big tinted vehicles like Alphards and Mercs zooming daily into the huge school compound to fetch the bling kids after dismissal. Goodness, when the doors opened, the maids would hop out to usher the precious kids into the vehicle besides lugging their heavy bags!

What happened to these pampered monsters?

They need their bags to be carried besides being ushered right into the waiting vehicles! I think the parents would have loved if the red carpet was laid out too.

      Delete
    7. The end result of pampered kids? NS (National Service) man needs maid to carry their bag for them *pat head*

      Delete
    8. we can actually see this from two perspectives.. on one side, the kids may be too pampered and protected.. but on the other side, it could be because of the environment that make the kids NEEDED to be pampered and protected.. i think rarely we can hear stories about "tin sang tin yong" nowadays, at least not in the big city..

      Delete
    9. Try looking at another segment of the society where kids are not pampered and not protected at all. What I know is my inlaws socio economic status is much lower than their children's so of course they can't afford to pamper their children whereas their children can afford to pamper the next generation.

      Delete
    10. Wei...jangan la kerana nila setitik rosak susu sebelanga, Anay. There are difference between "pampered" and there "protective" leh.

Yes, some kids are given whatever they wanted and end up turning into brats. But not all gua. Not all that goes private and international school are like that. Hey, even those from lower income kids also can be bratty leh.

Parents driving the kids to the school door and fetching them anywhere and everywhere not necessarily means they pampered their kids till obey their every wish.

Most time are for protection . Better be safe than sorry. Now ask a 11 year old kid walk 20 minutes to school alone....safe or not. recent case...the 6 year old kid with the mom holding his hands also can kena culik leh. How?

also if driving them to school and outings, the parents can ensure who are the friends of their kid.Whether they are mixing with the wrong crowd or not. So many good kids turned ba due to mixing with the wrong crowd. I have seen it before. Straight As kid...turn drop out when mix with gangster that lurking outside the school.

Not easy to carry a baby for 9 months and raise a kid leh.

In the old days, parents maybe be forced to let the kids take care of themselves due to financial reason. Now most have better life and understand the danger that lurks everywhere...so parents will of course be more protective to their kids.

It is not easy to see the like of being protective or over pampering the kid.

  4. Whooaaa!!! I am shocked to hear that Thambee took buses to school all by yourself! Hey, your brother Anay Koh was sitting a few seats away watching you nia... I am sure your mama would be freaking worried to let you hop onto the daily buses alone cos you might end up in Kashmir-Hollande. Muahahaha

Okay jokes aside, I am still in shocks and disbelief that you actually took buses all by yourself without any fear. Today after over 2 decades, you are still so brave to trains to work all by yourself. How daring this Thambee! Anay pat Thambee's karipap hair ~ good boi.

These days even adults have to worry for themselves as they need to look around that no kidnappers are hiding behind pillars.

    2. Yeah so true!

Talking about rape cases, I think old grandmas and even nuns or animals are not spared these days. I shudder and shake my head left right. When I read about the barbarians raping the nun, my heart ached so much and felt sad. The worst was the nun forgave the rapist and that made my heart weep so much!!! The world is going crazy!

We have to be careful in lots of things nowadays.
    1. We have to be careful on the road. Road accident is happened all the time. "马路如虎口" Many were killed in road accidents. I am scare of road accident. Don't speed and be focus while driving, folks!

    1. 2. Women who carry handbags and wear gold jewelries, must be extra careful on street. Poverty has made people go insane and i saw women's wrists and hands got chopping off just to get the gold chain. i saw women being dragged on the road when the thief snatched the handbag. These are life and safety threatening crimes in today world.
      It is scary!

    2. Many are too engross in their smartphone, people is looking and texting phone while walking on the road, they think the traffic will avoid them. Parents are too engross talking and texting on phone, and they forget to keep an eye on their children. Therefore, I read news of children were killed falling from escalator in the malls, children were hit by car in car park, children went missing at crowded place, and etc. These are all bad news and I feel sad to view those videos sharing in FB.

    4. What a pity that kids nowadays lost the freedom to roam about like us!
I used to go out to partay till sunrise and mama sleeps through without worries.

Last weekend my old classmate complained to me that he would have sleepless nights even when his secondary school son was playing in the neighbour's houses, just 4-5 doors away at night. He prefers his sons to play at home all the time so that they are safe. I replied him that his worries are turning his sons into sissies! Muahahahaha

      Delete
    5. Yeah, those are the good old times. I remember I was out playing at my neighbour places when I was only 5 or 6 years old. I lived in shophouses as well as apartments when I was a kid. I just hop onto my neighbour places in the morning before going home to shower for afternoon school.
And, come weekend, a few of us around 10-12 years old just go for movies by ourselves. Though we met and bullied by older boys who asked us for money, most of the time its safe. And, we even went to the football field for a game.
I also recalled when I was 7 or 8, my friend and I walked 2KM to a park to jog....muahahaha.. at 7am. Oh yeah, I started running when young..hahaha..

I also used to jog daily during my teen years , though only 2KM like that only la. Except being scared by a snake which slithered just 2m in front of me, I got no issues then.

    6. very true, those were the days.. i guess kids nowadays would most probably be very excited if you bring them for a ride on a public transport.. because they have parents to chauffeur them everywhere they go, the public transport is such "rare gem" to them.. totally the reverse thing back in my days.. :D

      Delete
    7. yes nowadays many things to be careful of.

      1. road- that's why am scared to drive. Sometimes just too many cars. dunno which sides to jaga. sometimes you don't langgar people , people will langgar you.

      2. yes true enough. happens a lot in KL. Dragged. hit the head on road side and die terus. The snatcher will slash with parang first nowadays instead of the ragut. sometimes it is better not to bring any bag. if possible put everything in pocket

Times are bad nowadays, Anay. Parents are more careful now. How not to worried...see the news of MJ and the kid.. what happen on closed bedroom door.

in the old days...neighbour knew each other. Next door berak keras...10 doors away punya neighbour will know.. Each house will sort of help look after kids around the neighbourhood.

Nowadays....next door neighbour name what and kerja mana also we don't know. Not surprised that your friend is worried about his sons la.

    1. I have a neighbor whose children go to a school that is less than 5 minutes walk from the house. And yet he drives them there.

      Delete
    2. I do understand that perhaps the heavy traffic is the main issue here. Crossing the road is a challenge with non-stop stream of cars zooming past. Kids can get careless and drivers think only of themselves. We do not have enough amenities for pedestrians.

      Delete
    3. I think parents have to balance out their concerns and draw a line between being protective and allowing their children to be independent and street smart.

      Delete
    4. When I was small, I lived near the primary school and wanted to walk back from school. But my grandparents won't allow.

    5. Nowadays, neighborhoods have to set up their own security and the residents have to pay security fee. What are the police doing? Haiz...

      Delete
    6. Let me answer you Phong Hong, The police are collecting donation on and off. On and off having road blocks here and there.

      Delete
    7. Yeah! No where is safe these days. In my area, almost every section of houses will have their own boom gates and different sets of security guards. They collect monthly of RM50 per house up to RM250 per house if that section has too few participating homes. The ones who refused to pay get to enjoy free security service!
The country is in dire traits that we need to hire foreigners to protect us from local thieves! It makes no sense dei.

      Delete
    8. And, except for some established housing areas, most of those that setup these gates are not really that effective. The guards are usually foreigners and besides having language problems, some cannot be trusted too.

In addition, I experience a few times that its so easy to pass by the guard. I just tell them I needed to see who and who and they let me pass.

      Delete
    9. well.. it's actually a two-sided thing if we could see.. kids are indeed a little over-pampered and over-protected nowadays.. but look at how the society and technology has advanced, and we could understand it's the circumstances that caused them to be.. anyway, time has changed, we aunties and uncles has got to think from a modern perspective and not from the point of view of our (g)olden days.. hahaha!! :D

      Delete
    10. 5minutes walk but nowadays not as safe as old days. Kidnapper last time curi curi kidnap the kids. Nowadays, kidnapped will terang terang kidnap in front of the public and in places where there are many people they will still do it.

As a parent, I would prefer to watch my kid walk into the school. If we can afford it and have the time to walk/drive the kid to school, why not? Better be safe than sorry.

As for teaching kids to be more independent and resourceful..there are others opportunity that have less danger.

Even with the guarded and gated neighbourhood there will still be robberies and thelf

Guess the police are too pening from the contradicting command given by the higher up. Several groups are fighting among themselves up there. Where got time to jaga what their subordinates are doing?

Nowadays tunggang terbalik liao la. Thief who clearly stole a handphone is considered a hero. A father who steal to feed the family got 6 months jail. How not to worry? What does this teach us? I guess the moral of this story is...if wanna curi...must curi big amount..then can cabut lari and enjoy in Cayman Island. Don;t curi RM2 things and masuk lokap

  8. Somehow I realised the past is seems safer than now. Kids just go out and played around the villages or streets until it's meal time without causing any worries from the parents. The parents just go about their work routines especially the moms who just cooked and when lunch approached, they will come home with dirty clothes, dirty hands, dirty faces, dirty feet and etc. The mom will shout at them and they will clean themselves before having their lunch.

The community was also closely knitted. Everybody will look out for each other especially children. I always heard stories about that kid or this kid went to some dangerous places to play like unused pond from the neighbors and the parents will be notified shortly by those stories. They will whack their kids back home.

It's not often we heard stories of kidnapping, kids being molest or raped back in the past.

    1. very true.. mothers in the past will just cook and wait at home for the kids get back home from school.. but mothers now will have to drive all the way from home, brave through the traffic and arrive at the school on time to pick up the kids.. time has changed..

  9. It's very scary to hear stories on kids being maimed in order to be able to beg for money at big cities , under some syndicates. It's indeed very heartbroken to see bright kids being used for someone's selfishness. I am not sure if these stories are true but I did read it somewhere in the papers. Very sad indeed.

I always ensure my kids don't be out of our radar when in the malls or outside, and especially so when travelling to other places like overseas. Hold them tightly. if it;s mall, it's still allright to 'let go' them but make sure they are with us.

  11. Yes, I also don't feel safe jogging in JB though I got no problems running at 10pm in SG. In fact, a lot of ladies also did that in SG. However, I don't even dare to run during daytime in JB , in case someone on a bike came from behind and snatch my phone on my arm case away!

If I didn't remember wrongly, there were incidents where ladies were kidnapped at car parks in shopping malls. Some where lucky to escape while some are not so lucky and they were murdered and sexually abused.

I wonder what have happened to this society. With education , folks should be more civilised and well mannered but somehow it was reversed. And not forgetting more resources on religious teachings nowadays. All these should taught us well!

What I believe is in olden days, it is also as dangerous and crime is also a lot just like now but we don't know about them so we feel safe to let 7 years old take public bus to school alone. And so happens the 7 years old is lucky that nothing bad happened. What I know is nowadays also got 7 years old take public bus to school alone but not those from families who are reading your blog lah. So to say there is more crimes now in society now may not be true unless there are official statistics from 40 years ago to compare with the statistics now.

There are more criminals, and they are more daring nowadays, so at any point that you lost sight of your child, they might swoop in.

I have witnessed the transformation of my peers who used to scorn at paranoid parents, but once they have their own kids, they turn into paranoid parents themselves.

  19. Agree. Though I did not start walking to school alone as young as you, I did it when I was in Primary 4. Back then we can go anywhere on our own. I remember cycling far far away in the evenings on my own. My parents need not worry as long as I make it home in time for dinner. These days,I can't even let my kids go to playground opposite my house unescorted :(

  20. during primary school I used to stay alone in the school waiting for my mum to pick me up, my parents never worry of me being unsafe alone. During secondary school I walked to school and strolling back home everyday. Now the society has becoming worse to the worst, even at home we have to lock the front gate and lock the front and back door like in the prison to avoid robbery.

    1. true true true.. even at home does not mean 100% safety, we have to lock up gates and doors to feel ourselves more safe.. pathetic society nowadays..

  21. true and this is very alarming
for someone like me who can easily become paranoid when hearing such news, this will give me many sleepless nights especially if the crime was done near to my place
this is the reason why I never allow my brother to go somewhere without either me or any member of my family to accompany him
he hate it most of the time though and he reasoning out that he is no longer a baby but I still insist haha
i would rather have than putting him in danger...you can never tell right

  22. The most scary one is they said they, actually not they is one person ride on bike then drive closer to your car then open your car back door, if the door cannot open, they will use helmet to hit on your car, it happens in many place, like around my area here! They always target on those single lady who driving alone, so seriously nowadays I scared to go out alone at night! Because we don't when we will become they target!

Also the economy is bad now, and the toll is increasing, more and more these things coming on! >.<

  23. When I was schooling, I walked to school. Those days, my mum was not worried at all. But I was worried when crossing the road. I never had the idea of bad guys kidnapping us.

    1. But for my kids, it's different. I had to drive them to school. Never allowed them to walk even though the school was nearby. Being afraid of bad things that could happen.

    2. But Wenn things are different now, even driving also dangerous, people will knock your car and want to grab your car...no eyes see

  24. Aih.... The sceurity these days is really scary and worrying! Especially for parents with young children...
Though I have not reach the stage to send my kids to school, but I started to feel worry. See, so many kidnapping and robbery cases~ Don't say big city like KL, even small town like Taiping also not safe! Anything can happen now!

I wonder how come those people so daring one? Kidnapping in broad daylight somemore! Do they ever think about the victim and the family's feeling? Do they ever think about the consequences? I mean what if they fail? And got caught red handed? I tell you if they were being caught by people, sure whack them kao kao one lo.... If got caught by police, then may be slightly 'lucky' la (if you know what I mean..), cause everything follow rules, and they might be released just like that in the end.

Anyway, do you think it has to do with movies too? Sometimes seen too many movies also can influenced someone to do bad thing ar~~ Haih~

So next time, I must be very kiasu liao, fetch my kids to and from school, with extra precautions. Better be safe than sorry ma right?

  25. Good afternoon SK.

The Photo "Be Careful. Stay Alert. Don't get Hurt" like some sort of Fear Factor challenge punya tagline leh.

Anyway....we are human.,.... no matter how careful we are or alert...one time or another we will get hurt....either emotionally or physically or both. But I don;t think this is the real topic today , right. It's more to topic of physical safety , right?

What purn this blog post on? Is it the kidnapping in kajang punya pasal? Very heart sick to see the video of the kidnapping and the most sad part is the candid photo of the mother's face sitting at the roadside.

From the video...i think the mother did what most people would have done. After all she was just in front of the kindergarten and a man asked her for direction. She was holding her son's hand. So ...how much more careful we need to be? Just ignore strangers that asks questions? Dunno la.

Yes, I recall last time kidnappers not as daring as now. There are cases where kidnappers goes INTO the school itself and pretend to be the relative of the student and tried to take the student out from the class leh. This happened earlier this year. Hence now all school bann parents from entering the school without authorisation. And even with authorisation. the parent can only go straight to the pejabat to ask permission to take the kid out. Wanna deliver food to student during recess also not allow. Kid have to come to the guardhouse and collect from the parent.

  26. Bravo wor, SK...Standard 1 already take public bus to school. Totally alone ka? Not accompanied by elder sisters or brothers? Salute you la.

Me not as good as you la. Both Primary and secondary school I took school bus to school Just need to wait in front of the house or maybe at a junction a few doors away for the school bus to pick me up. Those time it was quite "aman" . Now...even standing in front of the house people will come and kidnap.

And even with school bus not 100% safe. There was incident earlier this year where someone drove a school bus to pick up a student. the driver said the usual driver punya bus rosak. So he coming to pick up. Lucky the grand father felt something not right (unright) so he tarak let his grand son go with the school bus. Not long after that...the real school bus came and said he never asked anyone to help pick up the student. You say scary or not.

During my school days, many times my school bus rosak. And the School bus anuty had to asked another bus driver to pick us up. But she always ensure that she is also inside that bus. One thing is that she can show the other driver where she supposed to pick up the students la ...another thing is for safety lo.

  27. Yea back then tarak much feel unsafe.

Although I took school bus but during standard 5 , i had to ownself take bus home on some days. Coz my school have extra classes for those who are sitting for back then called Peperiksaan Penilaian. School bus tarak cover that.

That time walked 2-3km to the bus stop also tarak feel scared. But could be that time still young so tarak feel fear.

back then , I suspect parents also don;t feel as worried as now coz even if the kidnappers wanna kidnap pun will kidnap those rich man punya kids la

Body snatchers not as rampant as nowadays.

Nowadays with the advance in technology and medical thingy....There are higher chances of kids and adults being snatch for organ transplant purposes.

    ReplyDelete
  28. True what you have said. even children escorted into the school or any place else also not safe. Adult not safe too.

Last time robbers mostly rob for money. Got money and they would not harm you. But now...kill first and ask later.

How many times have we read and sen on television or social media about robbers coming into a house with parangs and gun....slash the occupants to disable them from fighting back before they rob them blind? How many times had it happen that one going to ATM and robbers come and slash them ..took their money and ride off.

You sit in pricey and branded car with all the added security...open by thumprint la this and that? Well...didn;t it come out in the news that the robbers chopped off the owner's thumb and drove the car away?

You think you sit in kancil and myvi and nobody will wanna snatch your car? also not safe. There are plenty of incidents where robbers snatched the key and drove off...sometimes with kids still in the car. Just imagine how worried is the parents..

Some would say local enforcement officers doesn;t do their job properly. Is it true? Not sure la. It could be the case of kerana nila setitik, rosak susu sebelanga. Betul or not? One take bribe and others got blame too. Guilty by association?

For example traffic police...many say they makan duit... but then not all are like that. There were incidents that the traffic police stopped and helped road user to change their flat type .

During puasa time...there are many photo post up see police traffic eating their meal buka puasa at roadside. How? anyway...i think my ranting out of topic already la.
