BUFFET: History, Like & Dislike
Buffet Food and Varieties

do you like buffet?? i am certainly a big fans of buffet, because i am one who love varieties and a little bit of everything.. in other words, i am greedy, hehe!! :p

i still remember my first buffet experience was on the graduation day of primary school.. a few of us close friends, with the impromptu suggestion from one of us, went to the Forliday Inn nearby our school and paid RM7 (price then for children 12 and below) for an afternoon tea buffet.. just us and no adults bringing, how daring!! but of course, KL back then was so much safer for kids to wander around the city..

  5. Buffet has always been my favourite until today. My first buffet meals were usually with my family at the Palm Beach Hotel at Penang's Batu Ferringhi beach long ago. That hotel's buffet was ranked number one in the country but it has been bought over by the Shangri-la chain and rebuilt. I miss those days when I could eat 7-8 plates and stayed so thin like pencil.

now you can eat 7-8 plate ka?dont think so lo. Stomacg become smaller jor. If 7 to 8 plates will have to sit there 5 or6 hours lo

    2. Palm Beach Hotel is no longer around and it was quite small sized but had a class of its own. The one you mentioned is E&O which is really damn good with long tables of yummy food. The hotel itself is damn high class and mahal for orang atas to dine only.

Being a perfectionist sure sk and friends would have investigated how much the price to eat there. Bring enough money liao

Ya wor..very brave of sk and friends to go there eat Without adult supervision but that time, the world is muchsafer la. Now...even inside school also got kidnappers trying to kidnap kids. Nuts la

  8. Such a coincident, I just had steamboat buffet last Friday to celebrate my brother birthday. I'm sort of that kind of person not suitable to eat buffet, because I eat very little, and most of the dishes I pick are those cheapest one (those what crab, squid and meat....are so not my type because I lazy to peel to shell so might just not eat them la)

But one thing I like about buffet is the ice cream, always have some space for ice cream, best can try all different flavors, hehe!

    1. Yay! Give me 5! I also love icecream when go for buffet ya lor if i go buffet sure rugi coz now old already cannot eat much. Prawns not lazy o peel but now cannot eat much coz cholesterol. Eat a bit more already feel headache coming. Haiz..what to do.

Like during Hari Guru or Hari Kanak Kanak, then somebody or the teachers or maybe the canteen fellas sponsored some food, and we kids, had it in the classroom.. Considered buffet jugak kan..

    1. Only been to McD for friend's birthday party in primary school.. Can consider buffet also ahh? Coz we can take as many burgers/fish filelts we want after eating ours.. Lastime, no set one.. Each table, they arranged the drinks only.. Then you go over to the "buffet" table and grab your burger and nuggets.. I remembered I sapu 4 fish fillets at a friend's birthday party, hehe..

    2. I think my first real buffet experience was during secondary school, around 16.. Mum brought me to Shang hotel for buffet lunch.. I would say that was the most awesome-mest buffet I ever had.. Lots of roast meat, pizzas, sandwiches, lamb, pasta, desserts and ice cream, ice kacang and all.. Heaven! And yes, like jakun !!

    3. When I was younger, I could eat more.. So going to buffet very worth it one.. But now, old already, cannot eat so much, go buffet also waste one.. The only buffet I still enjoy going is Japanese buffet only.. If ask me go hotel buffet, maybe I can't eat so much like I used to jor lor..

    4. Like you, I like to take my own sweet time and maybe take a walk first, to see the food.. Not like some people like you said, take back a few plates full of food, and expect us to finish those up. Big no no.. Tai dou tit mm hoi wai..

    5. I agree with you.. If go buffet, no need to teach me what to take, and what not to take.. If I go buffet, and I take some fried dory and fries, you "blow" meh? Yep yep, agree !!

I once had a friend who took me to hotel for buffet breakfast.. And he took only toast bread with strawberry jam.. I was like "what the...", and he said "I like ahh, you blow meh, most important pocket got money"..

      So true hor..

  10. I agree.

I dunno why people must take a lot of stuff on one plate and expect others to share.

What if others don't want to eat them?

  11. I used to go to buffet and eat as much as I can.

Now old already, tummy also cannot fit too much; I opt for variety instead of quantity.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Totally agree with you, I too will be pissed off when people take heaps of food on a plate back and then expect us to share it. Please lah, if we wanna share food, might as well go to "dai chao" lah, why waste money come to buffet, right? But some of them are like that, they think everyone else will agree with him/her on what is the most "value for money" food.

One of my friends is like that, he loves those raw oysters and thinks people who don't love raw oysters are morons. So every time we go to buffets, he would be sure to bring back a plate full of oysters and said: "Nah, lai lai lai, see I so good to you all, bring back this kik pan for you all"... We seldom invite him to buffets nowadays...

    ReplyDelete

Usually if go for the hotel buffet sure will hentam finish one .

Some more now some hotel sems to have cut cost. Some of the items when it is finished, the hotel did not replenish anymore.

Recently went to a buffet in a hotel. They had these cute tarts and cakes. I hoygh ala..later baru take la.. ..but mana tau when wana go take..no more liao. Tarak r3plenish asked the staffs. .ok ok ok but till we ciao still k.o.

  23. who doesn't love buffets? I love buffets too.. I am a cowboy man and I can eat anything LOL.. on top of that, I hate waiting for my meals especially when I am hungry and in buffet everything is ready to be served, you just have to pick what you like

    ReplyDelete
  24. that combination thing is so true... through their ready to serve meals, you can surprisingly come up with an interesting combination that you wouldn't expect to turn out so good...

    ReplyDelete
  25. as for the real case, i think it would be ideal to take only portion of food that you know you can handle rather than wasting them....if you are not familiar with the dish, then just pick a small portion of it to taste and just go back to take some more later.. if you can no longer handle what's on the plate, you can always ask a friend to help you out....urrg i just hate food being wasted ,, that's all hehe

    ReplyDelete
  26. haha.. okay so the next I go there.. we should go to buffet huh... I guess if you want to go to a buffet, you must prepare your stomach for it haha

  27. Wah you all are so daring when young to go to buffet alone but as children you get to eat at a discount so it is a smart move to go to buffet when you all are still children. All your other points are so valid. No need to take for others and for others to take for oneself. Everyone take their own and be responsible for what they take. I used to go for buffet a lot but now no more because really not worth it to pay so much when one cannot eat that much already.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Frankly, I love buffets! It gave me a kind of nice feelings going for buffets. Seeing all kinds of food spread out from appetisers to main dishes and desserts; not forgetting the varieties of drinks from fruit juices to coffees, ice-creams, cakes, fruits and etc. These enough to give one a good and joyful feelings!

And, that's why usually most folks go during special occasions like birthdays, engagements, promotions and all sorts of celebrations. Of course, there are folks who love food simply just want to wind down and indulge in all the good food.

    1. Everyone loves to eat buffets which are cooked and prepared by Chefs from world class culinary schools! Their food would be guaranteed tasty and delicious with beautiful presentations. For all that, we have to head for the 5 Star hotels in town otherwise we pay half price for shitty buffets where they recycle foods.

I know one hotel near Pudu that sells lovely cakes at their coffee house and by 7pm, the cakes go down by 50%. If no takers that night, the cakes would be sliced in small pieces and displayed on the buffets the next day. If the cakes are not finished at the buffets, the chefs would make bread puddings with tthem!!! This is really a recycling buffet!!

  29. Like you, I also like sampling each of the bits from the menu, if it's ala-carte buffet or the spread on the tables. I am no longer a bit eater like the past where during my late-20s, I was a buffet fan! During then, still single and no financial worries, I always joined my makan kakis colleagues for buffet. It's almost 2-3 times a month, from international to dim sum to Indian buffet during lunch time. And,well, buffet during lunch time are much cheaper compared to dinner. Moreover, some got discounts too and some even got free flow beer. hahaha...

I can't remember when I started having buffet but the most memorable ones are the hig-teas I had with my wifey , then girlfriend. I always brought her for high-teas during weekends so that we can relax and chit-chat.

I also had a lot of buffets with my current and previous companies. You know, most of the time, whenever there are special occasions like CNY or Xmas, the company will buy us a lunch and that usually buffets. In fact, I had the most buffets with my companies.

  30. Oh yeah, whenever I go for sponsored courses, I will chose those that held in hotels. This mean, lunch will be the hotel's buffet. I alway enjoyed these courses as it's always eat and eat , though the courses can be very packed and exams on the third or fifth day. I remember the buffet was kinda rush as we have to eat kinda fast and get back to the class. Usually, they will give us an hour for the break, which to me, is not sufficient for buffets....muahahaahhaa...

I also enjoyed the simple breakfast and tea breaks offered by these hotels where there will be free flow coffee or tea and lots of pastries. Oh.. how I miss going for professional courses..perhaps time to sign up one but I am too lazy to study for the certification exams.hahha...

  31. So nice of you to be able to enjoy buffet during primary graduation and it's so cheap at RM7. For me, after primary six, it's just business as usual. Go home and enjoy the holidays and wait for secondary school... muahahaha... OK la, your time is different from mine. Life's definitely much better as time goes by.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah, I also agreed with you that folks shouldn't bring back food to share unless that food is very popular , like salmon sashimi or some nice satay. I remember these type food usually finished very fast whenever it is out and people are waiting for it to replenish...muhahhaa.... Else, no need la, just go and take yourself on how much you want and what you like.

I usually starts with the soup and appetisers like salad. Somehow, I don't take the buns as it will make me full easily. hahaha... Then, it will be 2-3 main dishes in small portions before 2 rounds of dessert like pastries and ice-cream. Oh.. did i mentioned sushi and sashimi ? That's the first thing I take after the appetisers and to the horror of some indian chaps who don't take raw fishes, I took in lots of it!! muahahahha....

    ReplyDelete
  33. Agreed with your real case. I got colleagues who took excessive food and share it. Most of the time, nobody wanted it and tossed the plate back. Some folks really took out of goodwill to share but some are just greedy and before they knew it, they realised its too much and started to pass the plate around.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well, I tend to eat a lot when I was younger until my stomach really filled up like a balloon. I remember during then, my weight gain was very fast till I was conscious about it and started to take it easy.

Nowadays, as uncle, I also cannot take too much. I usually go for small portions on those food that I like or curious to try it. It's also depends on what food is that. If it's Indian cuisines, then I guess I will give up after 1 main serving cos it's too full!

I still likes buffet but like what you said, it's also a waste of $$ as I also cannot too much. I don't mind going for high-tea and enjoy the afternoon there as well as high-teas usually are cheaper than lunch or dinner buffets.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Betul betul betul. Go buffet take your own food, sit down and eat. Don't kaypoh kaypoh and take for the rest unless it is something very nice that everyone has been mentioning and runs out very fast with very slow top up then you may assist to get more when u see them in the tray.

Me also these days go buffet can't eat much but my kids can. They are taking over us, the old folks.

  36. Of all buffets, I find Japanese buffets are the most value for money, though they are not cheap. You can order the sashimi and sushis and eat many plates as sushi usually won't make you full so much! I enjoyed Japanese buffet very much and I had it a few times at Umai-ya , Puchong. Well, my in-laws find it to be quite affordable at RM50 per person then (not sure about now) and always bring me there. Free flow sushi .... how nice!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Another dislikes I had during buffet was some folks really like never eaten for many days like that. They just take and take and never leave any for people behind them. I encountered this many times and the one that I remembered most was the cruise that I took 2 years ago. Those chinamen just greedily take and take and bo chap you. Also, in seoul garden, the folks just take all the prawns like they have no cholesterols.

Sigh...I still prefer to eat in hotels.. at least, some 'culture' is there.

  38. Ah! I had buffet yesterday :) Was attending a seminar and that's usually how they feed us. The selections were small but not bad. I disciplined myself and went for 2 rounds only. My usual is either 3 or 4 rounds. ding! ding!

  39. Goodness! You guys were only 12 and you all went for a high-tea buffet all by yourselves. So brave and I wonder if the banquet staff were amused to see a bunch of kiddos all by themselves without accompanying adults. The price of RM7 per head is so affordable!

    2. I can't remember my first buffet experience. Definitely not when I was a child.

  40. I agree with you that it is not necessary for anyone to go take a big plate of food for everyone to share. I also don't like that style because what if I don't like the selection and end up wasted or the rest of the party is obligated to force themselves to eat the food.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I like to survey the counter first and get a clear idea of what is served. Then I zero in on the interesting/tasty looking ones. Take a bit first to taste because sometimes something that looks good may not taste good. Then if I like anything in particular, I will go for a bigger helping.

      Delete
    2. My brother and I always tell ourselves that we must pace ourselves and enjoy the food slowly. That way we won't get full too fast. If at Japanese buffet, my strategy is always to focus on the high value items like sashimi.

      Delete
    3. I notice some very bad habits. Some people take a lot of items like prawns etc for sharing with their dining companions until no more left for other diners. This is very selfish behavior.

      Delete
    4. And then there are some who can't decide what to take and they stand there for along time blocking other people's way.

      Delete
  41. In your "real case", are you referring to that person who took a plate of food for everyone to share? Exactly my sentiments that other people are not so into that person's selections. Also others already full or still want to go eat other stuff and that person may have taken way too much of the food.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Do you notice that there are also people who break the rule? Some members at the table may not be having buffet but those taking buffet will take food for them to eat. Maybe that's the reason why some restaurants when they serve buffet, there is no ala carte served on the same day.

      Delete
    2. But having said that, sometimes for certain food it might be a good idea to "stock up" hee..hee... for eg. the popular items like fresh oysters tend to finish very fast. One time I went for a buffet where they had these nice fresh oysters. The moment it was replenished, it was all gone. Twice I missed out until I purposely stand there and wait for the kitchen staff to top up hee..hee.. But I did not take a lot lah because must give chance to other people also.

      Delete
  42. I think most of us take buffet to mean that we should eat as much as we can. Actually the idea of a buffet is to serve various types of food for us to select and serve ourselves what we like to eat. It does not mean that we have to eat every selection or eat more than what we can stomach.

    ReplyDelete

    1. We usually have this mentality that we must get value for what we pay for and therefore must eat a lot to justify the price we paid. In some respects it is true, I mean if you just eat one plate of salad at the buffet, then you rugi lah. Better to go for ala carte.

      Delete
    2. I also think that way, must get value for money and I tend to over eat hee..hee... I will sample many items of the dessert as I know cakes at hotels are very expensive. So take the opportunity to wallop at the buffet. But after eating too much, I feel so miserable.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you that as we get older, the appetite is not as good. I find that, even though I am considered a big eater, I can;t eat as much as before. You know, when I was a kid I could eat 50 sticks of satay. No joke. Now, 20 sticks is quite heavy already and I cannot imagine how I could hit 50.

      Delete
    4. When someone invited me to buffets, I would eat and relax better than when I paid for myself. I would eat lesser as an invited guest. When I had to pay for my own buffet, I would do mental maths that I have scooped enough food to match the hefty price I paid which I often felt could not tally. The worst places to have buffets is at the steamboat restaurants! Their raw food were all cut up with no cooking and displayed for us to cook by ourselves. No matter how much you ate, it could never match the price we paid for. Better eat at the 5 Star hotels where their chefs would give you all the best meat cuts, salmons, shark fins, roasts, haagen dazz ice creams and plenty more. Aha!!! That one everybody knows it is in Starhill.

    5. Talking about satays, I recall one Singaporean friend who shared this story many years ago when he first tasted Kajang Satay and fell in love. His host offered them to eat more and had a bet with him & friends to eat more satay sticks to win the bet. They had to eat over 80 sticks to win the bet. My friend stopped at 60 sticks and couldn't breathe while his greedy friend finished at 80 sticks to win the money pooled. He ended up in the hospital that night with blood poisoning and doctors had to flush out his bowels by force. The hospital bill ran up and way higher than his prized money. Adoi so kiasu!!!

  43. So far I have had good experience at buffet as they met my expectations. But there were a handful of occasions when it was a let down. One time, I walked around many times, though there was a lot of food, none were to my liking. In fact those that I sampled did not taste good. So much food and yet nothing to eat!

    1. I remember a buka puasa buffet at a leading hotel in KL many, many years ago. It was so crowded and the food was not replenished on time. I guess the kitchen staff could hardly cope with the demand. It was a very frustrating experience that one.

    2. Every year my company would hold at least one or two buka puasa dinner gatherings for all our colleagues to have 'family time' with our fellow Muslim colleagues. I have never seen one hotel or clubhouse that could replenish enough food for the huge number of guests. Everyone would be eating more than their usual capacity! I hope my bosses will not go to that same clubhouse again as the queue, waiting and parking lots were all out of control until the mood of diners were disappointing. Somehow I think the big hotels we patronized seemed to have more efficient F&B department who did a good job to ensure everyone had enough, with no hassles or waiting. Kudos!!

  44. I love buffets. A forever weight watcher like me, also cannot resist the buffet food. I agree with you, buffet is meant for everyone going to take their own preference of food. My two daughters know this very well. Every time, we went to buffet, usually it was buffet breakfast in the hotel, they would say,"Mommy, I will take my own food, please don't take for me." Therefore, I would let them go hunting their own food themselves. I would go and take mine.

I love yogurt, fruit, and dessert. I straight go to salad bar, fruit corner, yogurt and oat corner for my first round. Second round, I would go to omelette, and egg corner. Third round I would go to dessert, bread and pastries.

    2. When I go buffet, I will go taking fruit, salad, dessert, soup and bread. I leave rice, noodle and those dishes very last.

Yogurt, fruit, muesli and dessert are very expensive. Therefore I will take many of those. Those are my favorite food.

As for drink, I will take fresh milk and coffee. I love half boiled egg too. I will take half boiled egg from buffet breakfast every day when I stay in hotel.

Anyways, I also head to fruits, salad and yoghurt at buffet tables to warm up my tummy engine before I start to hentam all the barbo and meat areas.

Good that your Jin Jin is garang at buffet tables so that there will be no wastage of food. I always thought that it was just mere 'sayings' that it is sinful to waste food BUT it is really a sinful thing in the law of universe to waste food.

    8. Thanks for letting me know, it is Regent Hotel and not Legend Hotel. Kekeke! Anay, you know all the hotels in KL eh! How come? You always check in eh!

Anay sure visited all hotels in KL for their buffets and hi tea, no?

  45. Your History: I remember the location of that old hotel in the city once upon time before they closed down. I was just wondering how could it be nearby like walking distance as none of you had driving license. Maybe I don't know where exactly was your primary school then before you went to the high school elsewhere. Anay thought he knew Thambee by hard including your underwear sizes but No!

Those days you could get a whole afternoon tea's buffet for only RM7.00!!!!! That was so damn farking cheap lo and Thambee could whallop many rounds until his tummy bursts! These days with RM7.00 you might get only a bowl of noodles in the coffee shop or juice a glass of juice at the air-conditioned restaurant. The inflation in our country is horrendous and killing everyone now. Ubah! Ubah! Kali ini ya!

  46. Your Like & Dislike: Seems like nobody likes to get an accomplice to go and sweep the buffet trays with platefuls meant to be shared by all. I would scream at that fella. It looked like most of the time when I took my plateful of loots from the buffet to my seat, someone would pinch my food out of greed! Phiak their fingers!!

I believe this is typical of Asian values to share plates of scooped dishes as we tend to have course dinners where huge plates are placed on dinner tables for 10 hungry diners to share happily. The western culture does not eat this way and their eyes would pop out in disbelief!

I often saw hotels putting up warning signs to warn diners who attacked the food and could not finish them, are expected to pay fines like RM5.00 per 100 grams!! Nah!!! I always saw tons of food wastage and no one ever fined anyone. Better take down the useless notices. It is so sinful to waste food.

    1. Anay, I am sure yous still remember those buffets from morning till night that were served on SuperStar Cruise. OMG! Luckily I was there for 4D3N and I worked out in the gym everyday. Otherwise I sure cried buckets when standing on my bathroom scale.

  47. Your Real Case: Spot On!! This always happened when I ate buffets during home parties that celebrated “House Warming” or “Baby's Full Moon” where hungry ghost relatives would habitually swarm and sweep the buffet spread with so much food for themselves but ended up shoving to other innocent parties who would look at each other with great annoyance. I had been a victim too many times with the same in-laws who are severe gluttons. I could even remember the types of food that were often surplus!! >>> Roast Pork Belly or Black Vinegar Pork Legs!!!

What's wrong with these peeps? They must have eyed at these food like rare gems up for grabs.

  48. Wrap Up: Aha! Anay wanna date Thambee to eat buffets again so that we can have quality time to chit chat. Let me see which is the nearest hotel to your office!! We can slowly indulge and eat slowly for 5 hours! I will look out for that Pearl Inter Hotel which has cheapo buffet.

I remembered Thambee went to eat at the All-Day Buffet somewhere in KL city and posted it before. That was a scary buffet and Anay dare not stuff so much.

  50. Ok, luckily you din't post photos of the food, cause I am a bit hungry right now, if see food photos sure lagi hungry, LOL!

Oh by the way, high 5! I consider myself as a big buffet fan too! =)
But too bad, no good buffet deal at Taiping, even those organized by hotels also just so so only... You know la Taiping small town, everything also limited, unlike those KL ones, like Jogoya, really can eat like whole day one..
Yea agree, since it's buffet, we can eat at our own pace, and we don't necessary must follow the flow, you know like appetizer first, followed by main course then dessert. For me, I usually will take whatever I see I like, then I will move on to ice cream and cake, and can go back to main course again, haha xD But depends also la, see what is available. If those food very filling one, like rice/bread, then I will take just a bit first, try other first. And even though it's a buffet, eat all we can, I still don't like to waste. I will just take a bit of everything to try, and if I still can eat, then only I top up, doesn't matter how many rounds... You know I have a friend who is very aware of the number of rounds we take food during buffet, she said better just take 2-3 rounds of the food, else later people will say I am a big eater, go top up so many times..
I know la she is paiseh if people really see her go top up so many rounds, but I told her who so free go and observe you? And hey this is a buffet leh, there's no limits like one person can take just 3 times of food right? You pay for it of course you can enjoy wert, but bottom line is don't waste food la.

Erm many people tend to have a habits when eating buffet, that is to take a common plate of food and place it in the middle of the table and that everyone can eat. Do you have that habits? Or you know someone who is like that?
For me, I think this is not necessary, since we already take our own food. What if no one is interested in that plate or everyone is full and then the food is wasted? Hmm...

  51. 我正証就喺你總結嘅情況,因此已經甚少食自助餐,一個正常嘅頭槃/主菜/甜品餐就算啦
