[Volume 10 Issue 6, #2030]
The *Palm on Sweating Face* Food Packaging
probably you don't understand why i am showing two empty wrappers when you saw the photo below.. it's a petty thing i guess not many will pay attention to, except the perfectionist (wannabe) me.. take for example two chocolate bars below, on the left is an imported, the opening is sealed using some food-safe adhesives, hence tearing it open is way easier than farting.. on the right is a local made, to cut cost, the adhesives is eliminated but the opening is sealed by heat pressing, hence to open it requires some effort, if not getting your hands sore and face red, or even not make a mess of crumbs on your hands, body and floor, you are lucky..
Good food packaging and lousy food packaging
can't understand what i am saying?? get one and try it yourself, haha!! okay, one more example below then.. for the cup of yoghurt below, due to the lack of a layer of adhesives between the seal and cup, no matter how careful you are, you will never be able to tear open the foil seal perfectly in one go but end up yoghurt all over both hands before you can savor it.. many times i really feel like meeting up with the CEOs and hand them their own products, get them to open and eat immediately right on the spot, i am just so eager to see that spectacularly awkward moment..
Lousy yoghurt packaging with easily broken seal

  1. Wow! Thambee you are so observant to see the difference of the 2 packagings. I only could tell the contents and its quality.

    1. Now I can agree after putting some thoughts. I always eat the imported brand of potato chips while watching movies. It is very easy to tear the imported packaging where their foil is thin and smooth without hassle. The local brand potato chips is a disaster cos their packaging is hard, thick and noisy like tearing newspaper. I have long stopped eating that Kotage flies brand.

    2. you may be true that i am a very observant person paying attention to minute details, hahaha!! i guess for many others, as long as the food can be taken out to eat, what's the problem?? :D

oh yeah, the Ray's and Luffle's potato chips you mean?? they are so easy to open.. where as our Kotage Flies, Jacky & Jelly etc can really feed the floor more than our mouth dei, muahahahaha!! but usually i'll just get the local ones to fix my crave, cannot afford the imported ones, they are too expensive dei~~ :p

      Delete
    3. Yes spot on! That Ray's and Luffle's are my favourites! You know my taste lah! I hate that Jacky and Jelly brand, so much flour added to make the fries and bluek. You just pay few ringgits extra for imported ones but the taste is world's apart and so heavenly nice to make our day!

Oh the cup yoghurt is so diluted that you could drink them a bit and left a bit to scoop lah. Try it!

Of course I do drink their liquid Yoghurt Drinks from tall bottles too. They are so filling and helps to loose weight when you skip meals. Those cup yoghurts have the foils that are so well glued, probably to protected the O2 from fermenting it further.

    4. Ray's and Luffle's realyl too expensive dei, i only buy them when there's promotion and only when they are under RM7 a packet, if normal price it's like RM12 dei, too unaffordable..

hmmm, maybe we buy different brands of yoghurt, because those i have been buying as so thick i can't drink.. thick isn't good thing because thickeners like starch (i could taste that) are used instead.. so now i rather buy yoghurt drink, at least no thickeners, somemore per ml is cheaper and then i can use them to make my overnight oats..

    5. I will go for Doritos or Mission since I like corn chips or tortilla chips. There;s another brand which I forgotten ( i think it's Chachos) and the wrapper was very soft. If you use a little force, all the chips will end up on the dustbins... cos it's all over the floor.

      Delete
    6. These are local brands but high standard quality. I always buy their tortilla chips to dip into my own made salsa sauce!

      Delete
    7. oh, i also love Toridos, i think Toridos is from the same company of Ray's and Luffle's.. and of course there is this local brand as mentioned.. and yes, we can easily see the difference when we try to tear them open...

    8. I also tarak notice leh.monly sk ot to be so observant.

Sk...soooo bad la..kotage ..sounds like ahem ahem la.....

Ahem ahem...make zown yogurt la. Easy leh. Fast also. Just need to leave it overnight then morning can eat jor. No preservative and you can adjust sugar level leh

  2. I hate it whenever I had a hard time opening the packaging of some chilli sauce and so on, created a mess and made my fingers so pain, like it very much if packaging comes with food safe adhesives

    1. yeah, same here, it's very frustrating if you cannot open the packaging and with all the hardwork you somehow ruin the wrappers and gotta resort to find upside down for a pair of scissors..

      Delete
  3. I have to agree that some of the packaging is so difficult to tear off. I encounter this issue the most when taking 3 In 1 beverages. The slit is there, but the slit is so difficult to "Koyak". I need to use scissor to cut off the top part and pour the 3 In 1 powder out.

    1. Yes, I never able to open the yogurt nicely. I will tear the seal in many parts like what you showed in the second picture.

      Delete
    2. yes!! that's exactly what i am facing too, so troublesome dei.. the manufacturer thought we are always carrying a pair of scissors with us all the time, and also expect us to carry a wet cloth to clean our hands like that.. haiz!!

      Delete
    3. They just want to save cost ... can't help it but then, how much can they save with a better wrapper ? I don;t think these will cost much. It's economy of scales.

      Delete
    4. Like that the manufacturers of the 3-in-1 beverages should include a free fancy scissors inside their big bags of coffee or tea. That would be thoughtful of them to make life easier for us without spills.

They can print a big logo outside that reads "Spill Free Sachets" inside. Guaranteed no mess and happy day.

      Delete
    5. come to think of it, all things come in wrappers and when it comes to wrappers, i have to say all the local manufacturer s**k in this.. they sure are expecting us to carry a pair of scissors all the time..

      Delete
    6. Yay... gimme 5 Yannie. Ya lor me too go find scissor and the cut . Faster and less mess . But in cinema cannot lor. Unless bring small scissors.

Same proble as you, yannie. I also cannot open the yogurt packaging properly. End up hand all sticky. I really hated that. So whenever j wanna eat yogurt i will tell him eat at home. At least can wash hand leh. I can not stand sticky hands.

  4. I support you with the idea to let those CEOs try to open their yogurt packaging! After 10 years of practice trying to tear open the lid nicely, I still fail miserably! This kind of little things in day to day life is one of the reasons why people who moved to angmoh countries overseas enjoy so much!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i support you for supporting me, muahahaha!! yes, the yoghurt lid is really miserably sealed.. now i rather go for the yoghurt drinks, at least the cap is easy to twist.. angmoh yoghurt is really a lot more tasty, but let's not talk that far, at least those in Thailand are so much nicer already..

      Delete
    2. I doubt the CEOs will ate their own manufacturer yogurts. I am sure they will go for high quality yogurt, maybe hand-made by their maids and with lesser sugar contents and use fresh fruit juices....

      Delete
    3. you are very true!!! because the people who work in there sure knows how the things are produced.. and i have heard too many stories that employees of a particular company do not even touch their own products.. :p

      Delete
    4. CEO will not care one la. As long as profit keep coming in they will not wanna rock the boat. Why need to change something that have worked for so long. Here is not like overseas where there is competition. You don't improve, people will not buy your products.

      Delete
  5. I totally understand what you are talking about! Finally got someone speak out loud about this because I thought that I was the only fussy auntie hee..hee.. These things ah, nowadays I just take my scissors to cut because so fed up trying to tear the packaging. As for the yogurt, I can never get it opened perfectly even though I try to tear it slowly.

    1. And how about those sachets of chili/tomato sauce? Suppose to tear at the perforation lines and yet cannot tear. Have to use scissors again.

      Delete
    2. and it's like they are expecting us to carry a pair of scissors everywhere, duh!!! spot on those chili or tomato sauce sachets!!! many times i cannot tear them easily, and have to use force, and when i used force, KNNCCB (famous quote from Twilight Man), the sauce spurt out and making such a mess on my shirt!!! now, i don't even want to have chili or tomato sauce anymore, just go original~~

      Delete
    3. Errr... don't mentioned about those chilli packets at fast food chains. Some really cannot be tear at the lines and you have to try on the left and right till all the edges have tested.... muahahah...

In the end, you might squeeze the sauces onto your shirt !!

      Delete
    4. that is exactly what i mean!! really have to say KNNCCB (Twilight Man's famous quote).. luckily i don't fancy all those sauce now already, i prefer to eat the food as they are..

    5. You know...some yogurt co start making those spoon with the sharp end . They hope that customer will use the sharp end to poke hole and open the yogurt lor. But sometimes its not sharp enough also difficult to poke hole. Then also if too sharp will be dangerous to children coz children also consume that mah, looks like chicken and egg scenerio

      Delete
    3. Yea, may be a swiss knife, or nail cutter, can do the job too!

  7. Everytime I eat junk food and tear open the packaging, I did not stop to think of how they seal the packaging so I don't know that some use food safe adhesive and some use heat pressing. Thanks to you, now I know.

About the yogurt, sometimes I managed to tear off the cover nicely. If it is difficult for me to tear, I won't force it until the yogurt gets on my hands. I will just poke a hole in the cover and tear a small hole in the cover like in your photo. Like that will not get the yogurt on my hands.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. errr, that's what i guess about the adhesives and pressing, to be confirmed by experts, haha!! as for the yoghurt, you know there's a little flap for you to tear the seal right?? many times even the flap is stuck and once i try to force it, the whole thing is torn and i do not know how to open the lid.. and yes, poke a hole is the last resort, but poking a hole may also have the risk to splash the yoghurt all around~~ @.@"

      Delete
  8. Sometimes it's so easy to tear open a packaging but at times, it's such a nuisance. Hence, we need a pair of scissors to do its job.

    1. hahaha.. Wenn makes it sounds so simple. Yes, just use a pair of scissors to do it, gently cut it and later put the stuffs in a container if cannot finish. But I don't think the yogurt can be done this way....muahahaha...

      Delete
    2. Maybe poke a hole in the yogurt and let the content flows out ... :D

      Delete
    3. but how many of us are carrying a pair of scissors all the time?? hahaha.. the last resort will be our natural "cutter" - the teeth~~ :p

  9. aiya ... it's expensive and quality vs cheap and lousy stuffs. The management wanted to cut cost by producing lower quality wrapper compared to those goods with great and friendly wrappers. So, at the end of the day, the more you pay, you will get better stuffs (though not for all the cases)

For example, once I got a nike shirt and I dump it together with other clothing for washing in the washing machine. Due to my carelessness, there was a piece of clothing that easily faded its colour and affect most of the white clothing. However, this white nike shirt was ok. In fact, I kana chilli on it but its washable!

    1. well well well, i think if you do not consider the exchange rate, i would say our own buatan malaysia could be more expensive, and even worse if you consider the quality..

  10. Some wrappers really has quality (not sure if it's imported). I bought some nuts and the wrapper that came with it can be tear easily with fingers and need not get cut with a scissors. Then, there was a 'auto-locker ' where the wrapper can be sealed easily.

Compared to some other old fashion wrappers for nuts (or biscuits) where it is made of plastics and sealed by some hot 'ironing' on it. You have to cut it with scissors and then once you are done, you have to search for a container to store the nuts or search for a rubber band to tighten the wrapper. That's really troublesome !!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh ya good point here.
Most stuff we have to keep in containers or tie with rubber bands, even with these, cannot guarantee that the food will remain fresh, after some times the food will turn 'soft' also, either we consume that quickly, or we get those air-tight containers from Tupperware.

      Delete
    2. There is something I cannot understand about the imported potato chips. After opening them and unable to finish, I just fold them down with a heavy mug to press it down. After 3 days, it is still crispy like original unlike our local potato chips that turn soft after few hours. Bleh!!
So I don't need to look for air tight containers at all.

      Delete
    3. i think the resealable packaging is kind of a good idea.. but we are talking about those little stuffs that sometimes you do not even have more space for your fingers to even tear from the edge that looks like saw.. it all boils down to the product packaging not ergonomically designed..

      Delete
  11. Your first illustration also reminds me when I was a kid (and even now), when I uses a little force to open a wrapper of some junk snacks (after feeling a little frustrated trying to open it), the contents all flow out on the floor and there goes the snacks!

I always keep a watchful eyes on my kids when they trying to open a chocolate or sweets for fear that it will drop onto the floor. And, the problem is not the chocolate but the little monsters' cries! My daughter always did that.... and I gotta get her another one to shut her down!! hahaha...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Chris you never grow up! Still spill the food all over after failed attempts! Your kids will laugh hysterically at their papa! Muahahahaha

I have been extremely careful nowadays after so much spilling and wastage. Can we sue the manufacturers for making us loose few drops of yoghurt or potato chips? Kakakakaka

      Delete
    2. that is very common leh.. i think our packaging used to be easy to open, and no idea since when after the first manufacturer "invented" the heat pressing and eliminated the glue, every other manufacturer follows and the nightmare of the consumer came.. it's not uncommon that we have the contents inside the packaging spill all over our body, haiz!!!

      Delete
  12. Oh..I always got my hands dirty with the yogurt every time I tried to open it, no matter how careful I am. You are very right and observant. Yes, please make an appointment with the CEOs and get them to open it...muahahahhaa... It's so troubling opening it no matter which brands you are buying unless you get yourself a yogurt drink!

Maybe there's a way to keep our fingers clean where the manufacturers have to do a little research. But then, cost will increase too.

    1. Haha good la if SK can meet with the CEO so that they can improvise the things, since many of us also encounter the same issue.

    3. yes.. i have always dream of crashing into probably a press conference and then hand the PIC their own product, and then get everyone to see the awkward moment.. then they will surely consider to improve the packaging.. haha!!

  13. Ooooo, I understand what you are saying.. I will start with the yoghurt first, coz I always have yoghurt in my fridge.. Kz and G eat a tub of yoghurt almost everyday, sometimes on alternate days.. Errr, but to be honest, everytime I tear open the yoghurt wrapper hor, ok wor, can tear nicely wor.. Very "chau sau"..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I always open the yoghurt wrapper, then lick the wrapper before throwing into the bin, and then only offer the tub to the boys.. Waste ma if don't lick, kan?

But to be honest, me ok wor, I can open it perfectly all the time, never kena my hands, and I can lick the wrapper clean somemore, kekekeke..

      Delete
    2. But I realize the shape of your yoghurt, memang biasa if you can't tear perfectly.. Mine is square one, I think you know which one, popular among kids one, lots of flavour one.. The square type easier to open.. But the round one like yours, yep, I encountered the same problem before also la..

      Delete
    3. As for chocolates, errr, you can call me cincai or chui pin, but I don't bother about the opening and all.. Normally I just open and eat only.. But like you said, certain chocolates like M&M, easier to open, coz it has the "gerigi" on top, just peel a bit, then dapat already.. But certain chocolate, have to open the whole bar only can take out a piece, dunno you know what I mean or not, so yes, I agree with the big chocolate bar..

      Delete
    4. Princess Ribbon, haha same here, I either lick the yogurt seal or korek korek with the spoon given, really don't waste ma.. hehe..

Oh, square yogurt, I know, I think is Calciyum? For kids one.

Those chocolates wrappers which cannot be opened easily one, memang susah, worse is if the chocolate is melted already, sure kena the hands and the inner part of the wrapper too, messy la!

      Delete
    5. After I korek-korek, I would lick the edges and then add water inside to bancuh to drink!! So kiasu uncle's method of eating yoghurt cups!

      Delete
    6. ooh, maybe those yoghurt you bought are meant for kids, so they really have to make it easy for them to open.. those i bought, as you can see, really gives me headache lah, many times the seal just torn into pieces and really is so inconvenient.. probably the manufacturer thought, as long as there's a hole to get the contents out, that's it.. we don't have to be perfect.. the Malaysian mentality~~

  14. Good morning bloggers!

Hmm, really a petty thing leh! I can't believe you are that detailed and 'perfectionist'! You are not a Librarian right? Hehe, I think you are Geminian, usually Librarian is very perfectionist, like me, everything also must be neat and clean, I mean of couse depends on what also la... Like small things like this, hmm not really will bother me, cause we can always use scissors/knife to cut it open. But if for like chores at home, I will make sure all are well taken care of. Even when I am dressing Aden, I will make sure I put on lotion on his arms and face, like cannot miss a thing la, haha xD

Okok, I think I am a bit out of topic liao :p

So, I know what you mean... I encounter such things always, I did wonder why some wrapper can be easily torn but some are so difficult. But it's just a small matter for me. To save myself times, I usually grab the scissors and cut it open, whenever I eat snacks/chocolates or food that has wrappers like this. I won't bother to try to tear it in the first place.. Unless if there's no scissors around la, like when I am outside... Then no choice but have to tear it like that, if still cannot, use teeth lo, haha, I bet many people do that.
Anyways, I did keep a small scissors in my car, who knows might need it?
Actually those sauces in instant noodles also same, some also cannot tear easily even though there's a small cut there. Worse, those sauces are oily so imagine if you tear it with hands, sure hands got dirty. So for this case, I always use scissors, save time and hands can remain clean.

And then the yogurt case, I totally get it. Most cases I got exactly like what you mentioned, the seal sure koyak into few pieces one. Same goes to mee cup, won't remain in one piece one, like that susah la cause for mee cup we need to pour hot water then cover it for the mee to cooked ma... If the seal is torn into few pieces, cannot cover completely already...

    1. i think as a mommy of two boys, you are used to carry a big bag with you all the time, and in that big bag you have got all kinds of "gadgets" like the Doraemon bag, haha.. so scissors come in handy for you to just cut the wrappers and get the contents out without mess..

and i agree with you.. yoghurt still okay, but cup noodles, the lid also koyak into few pieces, then how to cover it back to cook the noodles?? haiz~~

  29. Aiyo...when you say mess and crumbs on hands and body ah....phobia man.....

When primary school time trying to open the snack O-ya and those twisties..memang teruk...have to use teeth to bite. Coz if wanna use the tajam part of the wrapper to open, langsung cannot. It will fly all over the place and end up kena kns upside down by the adults. Really ah no eyes see.

Maybe that is why ah now more and more company is getting on to the user friendly bandwagon. Eh now even have the reseal able packaging leh. After you eat and cannot finish makan jusg need to zip it up again instead of having to hunt all over for rubber band to tied the pack.

Eh ya la...the oher day you say chips if put in fridge will beckme crispy again ah? . Same goes for popcorn or not ah? . My popcorn hari tutakhabis. Duno can still eat or not.
