[Volume 9 Issue 3, #1872]

i once stumbled upon a friend from the state of Sabah of Malaysia who referred a few of us as his "West Malaysia friends".. okay, before i start, allow me to stress that this is purely my personal opinion and of course i respect what others think and hence, say or write.. welcome comments to agree with my views, or to tell me that i am overly sensitive, or even to refute my points, i would like to hear from you.. :)

    1. Here, in the office, when the manager or sales need to go to Sabah or Sarawak, they will still say “Oh, we need to go to East Malaysia tomorrow to visit who&who”.. And when there’s phone call for them the next day, the receptionist or the people in the office will also say “Oh, Mr.xxx is not in, he’s in East Malaysia”…

I realize the word “East Malaysia” is used very widely here, rather than saying “Oh he’s in Sabah now, can you please call his mobile?”…

If you are talking about work, we use the term “EM” (East Malaysia) very often.. Almost everyday.. Reports are done using this EM term.. It is divided into a few sectors here, we have short forms for it:
      1) PS (Public Sector)
      2) MC (Main Con)
      3) SC (Sub Con)
      4) OG (Oil & Gas)
      5) WS (Wholesaler)
      6) EM (East Malaysia)
      7) ExO (Export-Oceania)
      8) ExA (Export-Asia)
      9) ME (Middle East)
So you see, from the above, it is categorized according to sectors, and “EM” (East Malaysia) appears almost everywhere in company reports, quotations, company meetings, what-nots..

    2. Ok, enuff about work, if you are talking about personal friends, I don’t have friends from Sabah or Sarawak, so I never address anyone before as “friends from East Malaysia” or “I’m your friend from the West”, etc..

      Delete
    3. Talking about personal feelings, I can relate.. Trying to imagine here.. If my friend (from Sarawak) introduce me to his/her family saying “This is Louiz from West Malaysia”, I feel awkward.. Can’t he just say I’m from KL? What’s so difficult about mentioning KL? Gee… Terbalik if I introduce my Sarawak friend to my family and friends, I think I will also automatically mention “This is xxx from Sarawak”.. Wont say East Malaysia kua, like very alien like that, kan?

But automatically, if it’s in the office, I will use the word “EM”, biasa already..

      Delete
    4. Hmm, interesting topic, but I can only write so much about it today, keke..

      Delete
    5. Intellectual topics, I also must write intellectually, gee.. Cannot simply incorporate my princess-fairytales-nonsense-aunty stories in this post, else, bikin malu.. Meow, if you are reading this, I know, your copyright..

In a nutshell, to wrap things up, if it’s personal friends, I would address them properly, like xxx from the state, or town in the state.. If it’s work, automatically I will say EM kua, coz I have been using this term in the workplace for many years.. If the company sends me for training in Sabah/Sarawak, I will also automatically tell my family “I’m going to East Malaysia for training tomorrow”.. I think la.. But belum cuba belum tau la.. Coz I’ve never been to Sabah/Sarawak before, heh..

Belum happen belum tau.. Sudah happen baru tau.. After really happen only I come back to this post and comment can ahh?

    5. I do say my KL friend too...unless there are more than one of them from different places, so I would say "my West Malaysian friends" or he or she is someone who will move here and there - in Malacca, then in KL and now in Penang...so dunno exactly which to use - Malacca friend, KL friend, Penang friend...easier to just say "West Malaysian friend".

      Delete
  4. I always say that, though I am not from Sabah...and I also say my friends from Sabah.

We are one country but we are different in many ways. Like if I give kampua to someone in Sarawak, it may not be appreciated as much as my "West Malaysian friends" since they cannot get it there...or maybe they can at selected places, not as nice as the original here.

No discrimination of any sort. In fact, if somebody says, my friends from West Malaysia - it is some kind of flattering. Wahhhhhh!!!! Especially in the old days, because of the geographical divide, people here hardly had any friends in the peninsula. I am so very thankful that I have had many over the years...and through blogging, I have even more.

Wish I could have more in Sabah though. My friends there, mostly those that I got to know when I was working - none through blogging.

    1. You love to use this phrase the most....

Should I address you as East Malaysian too? No way, I have more polite and glamorous way to address you as our Sibu's Food Mayor or Kampua King! Wakakakaka

      Delete
    2. I guess that's because I'm the only one from this side so you only see me using that phrase...or "in the peninsula" - same as you Penang people will always refer to those "from the mainland" like there is a difference or they're not in the same state.

No problem calling me your friend from East Malaysia, Sibu or Sarawak...just don't get confused. Many don't know the difference and will ask me if I'm from Sabah or Kota Kinabalu...or things over there that we here do not know much about.

      Delete
    3. It is so true that I being a Penang born often got this question - Are you from island or mainland? As if they want to calculate my asset values. Well, this soon became sensitive questions as mainlanders felt shy.... I better stop here!

    1. Ok, I'll say it - a West Malaysian friend came and I went to the airport to pick her. The Air Asia flight was full - on a working weekday, some more...and the first thing she said me was, "Are people in Sibu very rich? Look at their luggage, boxes and boxes...and so many coming back from KL. What is there to buy in KL?" I have no answer...except that I'm not and I do not go on a shopping spree in KL or anywhere for that matter.

    2. Some friends from dunno which kampung also always say “You are from KL ahh? KL people very wild one ahh”.. Chisin. Hope I’m not offending anyone. But please, before you use such phrase on (KL) people, do your research first.. They always feel “Oh you are KL girl ahh, no wonder lah”.. Hello, what do you mean “you are KL girl” and “no wonder”?

      Delete
    3. Not that I know. If you're a KL guy or KL girl, glamour lah. If you're Sarawak people - you're jungle people lah, still live in the trees one...which, of course, is a misconception.

    4. LOL... Wild people should be from jungles! Wakakaka
I agree that there are more wild and scandalous people in KL than anywhere in the country. They are not very wrong.

      Delete
    7. Yeah why not?? Klang Valley folks are sometimes looking at people with big & small eyes too! This unhealthy habits have divided many friends and associates due to the lack of self confidence. My office is a good example as we have issues with races and different nationalities all rolled into this new mess. If humans could think alike, the world would be a peaceful haven.

    8. Agree TM! Give me 5!

Ehh, sorry hah, run away from the topic liao.. Well, we cannot change human perception.. Their mouth, their like.. But just don’t simply say la.. Like I mention above, they always perceive as people from Bangsar or PJ or Subang like very “hi class” like that.. Even when asked where you buy your properties, or where you stay? I don’t like those questions la.. They show one-kind face..

So TM, I'm with you.. Human will be human.. They will look at you one-kind if you say you are staying in Jinjang.. Not only houses and properties.. Even sending your child to the kindy.. If you say you are sending your child to Q-Dees or Beaconhouse, then there will be ohh-ahh-waah..

    10. It's true that there are differences. Even in the small island of Singapore, Chin Choo pasat is very different from say, Serangoon...or Geylang...or Katong...and of course, Orchard!

Like Sibu and the towns around like Sarikei and Bintangor would be different from Kapit or Belaga upriver...or Dalat and Mukah downriver...what more to say the towns here and the ones in the peninsula.

I am not saying one is good, one isn't or one is better than the other...but I do think it is good to travel around one's own country to see and experience and learn. So many things right here at our doorstep, so many things that we don;t know of - like when smallkucing and family took me to Tanjung Sepat. Oooooo....I loved it so much and really enjoyed myself - it's so different and so very interesting in so many ways. Too bad the Lovers' Bridge collapsed soon after I left. When my friends from Penang visited KL, they insisted on shopping for clothes and stuffs from IKEA so that they could show off to the folks and friends who have the habit to check on their shopping loots. It's like a trend that they need to cart home some loots and tales to brag to office colleagues. I heard Kidzania became a 'must visit' place for their kids too. My visitors would tell me to drop them at Kidzania and IKEA as standard practice. Since they could not buy furniture home, they never failed to buy that plastic bag canister to store rubbish bags.

  8. I have so many West Malaysian friends - very very good ones, some ever closer and a whole lot nicer than my friends in East Malaysia...or Kuching...or even right here in Sibu - they're simply the best.

Now, other than some insignificant acquaintances you all had in college or in the uni, how many of you can actually say the same thing about your East Malaysian friends - your Sabah friends or your Sarawak friends?

The bottom line is it all boils down to the individual - you, you and you! I am so thankful to be blessed with such wonderful friends - in West Malaysia or wherever in this country or other countries in the world, praise the Lord! It does not matter who or here they are or what I call them. PERIOD.

I knew her before when she was doing her masters or phd in NZ, was a blogger then...now back in Malaysia and married.

I do not know where she's from originally...or where she is now, Pahang, I think - maybe I will find out when she comes...but for the time being, I will tell my missus - my "West Malaysian friend" is coming next month... Let me relate something... last time when I was in HK or China (cannot remember where) the people refer me as "Ma Lai Yan".. for a moment I was like "huh".. I wanted to say I am a "tong yan" then later I realize that we Malaysians are Ma Lai Yan to them... that makes me think.. why overseas people can refer to us as Malaysians but in our own country, we must specify ourselves as Chinese, Indian or Malays? So from now on, we are all Malaysians or should I say Ma Lai Wah Kiew... no need to differentiate already.. since foreigners also take us as Ma Lai already...

  14. Lol so ngum you put up this topic. Just last month I was chatting in FB with an author. He also posted the same question.

But his is a bit different from yours.his was why should we address or rather catergories friends...for example when introduced a friend..this is my FB friend/school friend/work place friend/badminton friend.

E asked so fb friend is less close than badminton friend? Or badminton friends is less close than work friend? So how to classify friend. Is a friend really a friend or does the title friend will makr friendship true?

Saw many rssponse in his fb comments. Each give own reason. But I agree with the author la. If it is a friend then just introduced as friend la. No need introduce as this is my fb friend.

  15. Ok I'm in now...

Salam 1 Malaysia, that is the phrase we always heard from TV and radio. Why must specify a friend according to PM and EM. Those who always say like that usually are very calculative person. PM or EM we are all Malaysian leh. Friend is a friend, do not have to classify liddat one. Different saying if we mentioned someone from abroad and it is outside from Malaysia.

    1. From my point of view, only senior people will mention like that. Maybe from their experiences, they are born like that in order to differentiate them from others. To emphasize more in depth, probably there some incident that makes them to differentiate them accurately. Will it be? Maybe right?

    2. I won’t take it seriously lar, if they mention this friend from this North or South of Malaysia, as long as they didn’t talk bad or criticize people, well it fine for me. But don’t lar mentioned it all the time, I also will feel boring hearing it every day. Since it is your friend, just say your friend lor… The best it call their name even better.

Since Louiz also mentioned about her work, I also want to relate today’s topic with my daily work as well. I guess my work similar with Louiz. PM or EM both are normal terms for us. Right Louiz? Sudah biasa… almost every day I’m dealing with salesperson and branches matter all around Malaysia. Sometimes the GM need sales according to customer by region, followed by sales district. Salespersons are demarcation in different territory. Since we have IT experts here, I have no problem to generate the reporting in detail every month. Since it is in detailed, only authorized person can access and run such reports. Besides monthly basis, I have to run for quarterly, half yearly and annually to do any simulation and comparison analysis for the management future undertakings and actions.

Oh yes, am here, reading you all punyer comments.. Yep, am only using the term EM at work only.. Other than that, if I am addressing a friend, or introducing a friend, I won’t say he’s my EM friend or what la.. Will say he’s xxx (name), ma enuff lor.. If people ask further, just say he’s from Sarawak or what lor..

Yep, those reports and company meeting thingy all already categorized into short forms.. Everyday, I hear the word EM.. Even today.. One manager went to China liao.. He’s the manager for EM sector.. Phone call came and look for him.. I still hear people answering “xxx is not in, in EM, pls call his mobile”..

Then sometimes, my superior will just ask me “Have you sent out the report for EM”? Or “Have you emailed those EM people”?

Ala, dah biasa.. But only for work ok.. For introducing a friend, no, ok?

  21. Good afternoon everyone!!!

Har, I don't know this statement can arouse such negative emotion leh~
coz I'm also the one who say like this, actually no other meaning. Instead of just saying Malaysia (Too general) or Sabah, Sarawak etc. (Too Specific), then I will say East M'sia =D

However, I'm more likely to address East Malaysian instead of West Malaysian, don't know why. Perhaps I'm from West Malaysia, so I won't address my friends as West Malaysian, but will say KL, Johor, Alor Setar, etc. as I become more familiar with Peninsular Malaysia where I live.

But yes, I do say East Malaysians instead of Sabah & Sarawak friends. Is it a kind of racism? But really don't have other meaning woh. Since u mention it, I should reflect on this issue haha~
Thanks for sharing~ Good point (y)

    1. I myself would just be specific. Tell the state instead of West or East?

Never even use the term Borneo myself either, even with foreigners when talking about the two states.

Just like I won't generalise West Coast and East Coast. Southern State, Northern state. Too damn mah fan. Each state got name mah and each state got name for different districts. What kin of Malaysian are we that we have to generalise in such a way?

Just like I read somewhere how a person living in Ipoh doesn't know where Bukit Larut is?

    2. Yaya Lina, I get what you mean =D
Just clarify that people who mention west or east Malaysians maybe don't mean to be racist or contain any other complicated meaning, but just didn't aware of the way of introducing. Anyway, this is quite a good topic for the person like me to be aware of this issue nia~

  26. SK, I think this is more a force of habit. We tend to refer to where our friends comes from like "my friend from Johor" or whichever state. Maybe some people don't make it a point to make reference but at the end of the day, I don't think it is meant to be discriminatory lah. But then again, you are right too because how many of us say, my Malay friend or my Chinese friend right? We just say my friend, right?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well, you got your point, if you're friend with someone can just tell his/her name, don't have to specify the country, unless if asked la! Yep, definitely more polite and proper to say 'friend from somewhere'. By saying west Malaysia or eat Malaysia is very weird lo! At least directly say 'friend from Sabah, friend from KL'...
And be it west or east Malaysia, still we are all Malaysian ma! Sometimes something doesn't have to be differentiate so clearly right?
Hmm, I wonder who is this friend of yours? Do I know him? Sounds familiar, I also encounter similar case like this leh! Come, email me to tell me, hahahah xD (Just kidding la)

Anyway, everyone has their own way of thinking and speaking, we just cannot control or critic too much. If we already know that friend is so particular like that, then just let him/her be.
Of course, this is your blog your personal opinion... And no one should critic you or anything... It's a blog world, we are ok to share share ma! ;)

    1. Not me, I'm not from Sabah...but many "West Malaysian friends" get the two confused, can't tell one from the other. But it's actually the same here - many don't know the states in the peninsula - like if I tell them my daughter was in Sungai Petani...*blur look*...in Kedah...*also blur*...near Penang. Ahhhhh!!!! That they know!

By the way, if from PJ, Shah Alam, Klang etc...etc...still refer to as KL friend? Here, I take my friends out for dinner at my favourite cafes in town...and I would tell the bosses, they're my friends...they're from KL/West Malaysia, Australia, US, London...etc! Wahhhhh!!!! That always impress the bosses - people from so far away like the food they dish out, so flattered.
