[Volume 7 Issue 4, #1375]
was chatting with a friend and mentioned about a ban mien stall we used to go, but have not been there since we graduated from primary school.. we thought after so many years, it may have ended business or moved to another place.. felt like having it during the weekend, i travelled to this old place with uncertainty, and was so thrilled they are still there!! ordered a large one to savor, and it tastes just as yummy as it was 25 years ago, oh sweet memories~~

    2. I'm beginning to suspect First Lady Lina sets her browser's homepage to SK0617. Open Internet browser, tadah straight away greet SK.

    3. Because, today my blogroll didn't show the latest post of SK. So, I thought I check upon this blog first before I lodge a 'missing blogger' report to blogstation.

See-see, got new post and Lina is way much early leaving her footprint here.

Reminiscing about food you used to eat like ages ago...

So the proprietor still the same or not? Or is it now Bangla guy who makes the dish? ;p

    1. eih, indeed i am an old uncle lah, haha!! see, this is 25 years ago!! but hey, they are still the same people doing that, not a single bangla, that's something good to see right?? :)

      Delete
    2. Good for you lah, can taste the same taste you had 25years ago.

I had this one place that I really like their Pan mee, but now don't like to go there already because Bangla made the dish. The taste simply not right lah!

      Delete
    3. aiyoh, where is that pan mee?? yalor, if changed to foreign workers manning the stall, sure not as nice already lah.. but this one is good, the lady boss still the one cooking.. that's maybe why they are still surviving for more than 25 years..

    1. anay, it's very nice!! but it's a little different from the normal ban mien we have.. click on the "note" button to see how different..

  7. I like my mother's homemade ban mien the most. Mentioned 'homemade' mah!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Am trying to pick up her skill on making ban mien (since now my cooking / baking mojo still around).

      Delete
    2. yeah, i think homemade one are nice!! the soup also easy to cook, just ikan bilis or maybe with bonus chicken.. then stir fry some meat and mushrooms, the noodles can buy from outside lah, save the hassle..

      Delete
    3. adoi! SK cook them for us! I hungry lah! ;p

      Delete
    4. hahaha, i dunno how to cook.. my dad cooks one, i just talk talk here only haha!! :D

      Delete
    5. The tricky part of making homemade ban mien is the noodle, the dough. We don't get outside noodle but to knead the dough ourselves, er, I mean my mother, hihi

      Delete
    6. haha, my dad can make the dough himself if he got the time, else he will just buy from outside.. actually homemade one already nice lah, sure we got "gar liu" one mah, haha..

      Delete
  8. There's one old kopitiam in my town here serves the best ban mien which of course, is having the same-same ordinary liew - fried anchovies, minced meat with mushroom and green (dunno the vege's name :p)

So, whenever I crave for ban mien and my mother mogok to cook, I'll eat there.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. actually i don't like minced meat one lah, it somehow in the end makes the clear soup so murky.. i like meat slice like this one lor..

      Delete
    2. I agree, so most of the time I order dry one :p

The kopitiam here is famous for its pumpkin and spinach flavor noodle. Kinda special because others serve plain noodle only.

      Delete
    3. sorry lah, but uncle actually not interested at all on those creation lor, what pumpkin what spinach what charcoal.. i still prefer the original one, just plain flour and eggs only..

      Delete
  9. You ate at that stall 25 years ago and it's still standing strong today. Man, that uncle/aunty must be in his 60s or 70s by now? Or his descendants took over?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. no woh, it's still that auntie manning the stall.. she's still the one cooking but she doesn't look aged too much, i have no idea how old she is lah, haha.. but another worker who makes the noodles become an old grandma already lor, yet still very energetic ler..

      Delete
    2. Hahaha, this is what the management call, retain their valuable asset of the company. If the management decided to cut cost and hire bangla to manning the stall, habis cerita!!

      Delete
    3. yalah, this is what they call a differentiation strategy mah, haha!! must be different so that customers will come, or else if all bangla cooking the noodles, everywhere also the same right?? :)

      Delete
  10. I bet the price they charged is different from 25 years ago, hihihi!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. of course is different lah, how can maintain the same price for 25 years?? i remember that time was like RM2.50, now it's RM4.00 only..

      Delete
    2. RM4 cheap lah. Right? :)

      Delete
    3. yalor, in KL area RM4 is cheap lah, large one also only RM4.50..

      Delete
    4. Hey, it's still cheap leh!

From RM2.50 to RM4, not a huge jump. And they still maintain the quality.

I too enjoy the old old stalls with old old faces handling the food. With the familiar faces, the food won't go wrong, hehehe.

      Delete
    5. yalor, now come to think about it RM4 is really cheap leh.. hmmm, i was so thrilled i see all the same faces (albeit getting older) manning the stall.. it was really a happy weekend for me.. :)

  11. Ban Mien is my favourite too. I love eating it with sambal chilli.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hehehe, not my favorite but then sometimes i will be craving for it lor.. and i prefer soup one than dry one..

      Delete
  12. May be one day I must make my own ban mien to give you a shock.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hahahaha!! actually won't shock me lah, cos we have been cooking ban mien at home quite often and actually it's not very difficult to cook woh~~ :p

  13. I remember last time my friend bringing me to eat the ban mien in KL. It was opposite hotel Fortuna. Don't know that hotel still exist or not. Don't know that stall still exist or not.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i think still there lah the hotel, but i have no idea there's a nice ban mien stall over there woh.. ooopss, you didn't mention that one whether nice or not also hor?? :D

      Delete
  14. You didn't mention about the mien they served. Is it the one got processed by the machine or they 'tear' the mien one? I prefer the latter :)

Somehow 'tear' ones feel very homely type.... hehehe, yalah, my mother doesn't have the machine so she uses 'tearing' method on the dough.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh, they don't use machine at all, all are the "tear" type and you won't have to choose by standard all the same.. in fact they still very traditional, use hand and roll to roll the dough, unlike now all use machine already..

      Delete
    2. It's very hard to find the tear type nowadays. Most hawkers seek for machine made noodle to save time and effort. That traditional stall still insists using the old method, kudos to them!

No wonder SK returns after 25 years, hihihi....

      Delete
    3. errr, i thot tear one are easier cos they just tear and throw into the soup.. i think you have to request for tear one or else they give you the default thick noodles.. normally if not the tear one, i requested for the thin one lor.. haha!! 25 years, you were not born yet, hehehehe~~ :p

      Delete
    4. I guess all the hawkers here are lazy, they opt for machine made. Ask for tear one, they say not available, cis.

25 years ago, I sudah exist in the world la. Aunty already~

  15. Some stalls are very stingy with the liew. 2-3 tiny slices of mushroom only and I must stress here that the liew is a strong factor that determine a good / bad ban mien. Agree?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh, instead this one very generous, a lot of mushrooms and browned shallots, maybe the meat not as much lah, but still very nice..

      Delete
  16. if only we could turn back time..those days the food were much cheaper and delicious too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. errr, can never expect things to be the same price as it was lah.. but then taste could still maintain though i believe..

      Delete
  17. I love this noodles too..yummy. How much is it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. it's RM4.00 for small and RM4.50 for large one.. consider cheap in KL already..

      Delete
  18. The bowl of noodles sure looks delicious! I certainly hope decades down the road, we'll still be able to eat authentic Chinese dishes.
