[Volume 7 Issue 9, #1534]
i remember when fast food chain newly landed, people took initiatives to clear the rubbish after eating.. but it has nowadays become an unspoken custom that we can just leave them behind and there will be somebody doing that for us.. some say this not impolite but we create jobs for more people, because the fast food chains will need to hire more people to do that job, haha!! for me, it depends on my mood, most of the time i'll just leave that to the "professional", but there are times i will do that myself, and the staff will be grateful and thank you for helping them indeed!! so what say you about this??
[out-topic] see that GCB word in the photo?? what is your interpretation of GCB?? it's actually Grilled Chicken Burger, but i actually associated it to Grilled CB, well you know CB is a popular vulgar word to describe a body part of a lady, hahaha, am how bad i am~~ :D

  3. It's a good habit to clear away everything after you have finished. They ALL do that overseas...not just in fast food restaurants but also uni cafeterias.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I clear the tray if it's not sticky or dirty. Otherwise, I'd normally put everything back onto the tray to make it easier for the staff.

p.s. Trays in our fastfood joints are atrociously sticky/dirty. I sometimes wonder if they are ever washed - if not, laced with bacteria. Horrors!

      Delete
    2. yes i remember that when I was in overseas, we throw away all those rubbish to the trash for the next customers to use..
      it is a good habit..
like wise in our house we also bring our plates to the kitchen after makan..

      Delete
    3. Yes I remember I worked in Penang many years ago. Our management wanted us to clear up our own trays, put cups and plates at the right sinks before we left the cafetaria. My ex-company in Penang is an US based company.

      Delete
    4. I do not throw the rubbish or leftover and put away the tray on the designated place *guilty*. But like Happy, I put everything back onto the tray - serviette, empty boxes, chicken bones, saucers.

At least I ease the staff's work.

      Delete
    5. It is due to cultural differences that we do things differently. The ang mohs will do anything to clear trays or give ways on the streets!!!

Ask them to take off their shoes before enter my apartment created WW3 with them! CCB!

      Delete
    6. TM, CCB has become GCB. New term that was taught by our very innocent host.

      Delete
    7. Asian are very selfish, what do you think?

We do not clean up our food when we dine outside and expected to be served like a king. But we want our guests to take off their shoes so that they don't dirty our carpets and our floor!

      Ironic isn't it?

      Delete
    8. Clearing tray and all these begins at home. Tell those "bosses" at home to start clearing the table and do the dishes first la.

Otherwise mana ada habit to clear the tray one?

Like Happy Surfer, if the tra from the former occupant is clean then i dont mind clearing la but if sticky or have tissue stew all over the table i dont want lo. geli la.

      Delete
  4. But because we do not do that here, this means that they have to employ somebody to clean up after the customers have left...and that means somebody gets to get a job because of our bad habit.

    ReplyDelete

    1. i think we should start this good culture..
maybe the restaurant management thought it just a small money just to hire a staff to clean the job .. since they make so much right

      Delete
    2. I strongly agree we must clear up our own mess after every meal - put the rubbish in the trash can, the plate and cup in the sink and better still, wash them.

It should be a good practice since young, start from home. I constantly remind my daughter to put the plate in the sink and make it a habit for not expecting someone else to clean it up afterwards.

    3. I went to IKEA to eat last week and it was a messy sight at the dining area. When I took my finished trays to place on the rack, I saw so many roving eyes looking at me as if I was an idiot.

    6. No, TM, they looked at you thinking you are the idiot waiter who doesn't do cleaning on their tables. Faster go and take the trays and wipe the table clean!

      Delete
    7. memang pun why Yvonne say. At home if wanna take dishes and cups to sink and wash them, how to expect them to clear the table when go out to fast food restuarant makan and the clear the tray?

But then like SK, am guilty too la. It depends on my mood. If angin good the will clear. Otherwise, will put everything on the tray and let the staffs do it

      Delete
  5. On the other hand, it means that other customers will not be able to sit down until the employee comes round to clean up.

      Delete
  6. Plus it isn't so bad if it is only the paper cups and the boxes and wrappers. Some people leave all their rubbish behind...especially their own tissue paper, lipstick and all...and often, things get dropped on the floor and they do not bother to pick it up and put on the tray on the table ready to be thrown away. The many faces of the ugly Malaysian...

I don't understand why people can be so messy eating burgers and have wrappers strewn all over the table. :(

    1. My other half is guilty of doing this. On the other hand, I usually clear the wrapper for him and he stares me with (??), and says the waiter will knows how to "fix" them, duh!

Don't be so dependent, wokay? Some of us are too spoilt. There's maid at home to serve you, and now expect someone to serve you well outside too?

But wait, we Malaysian are like that - we pay for the service charge wert, so must fully utilize the service! Kakaka~

      Delete
    2. that's why when you see ang moh come Msia or those like TM who go and take their tray and put into the trash, other people would stares.

  9. To me, I think it is a courtesy to clear the mess ourselves. It is a good behavior to cultivate in our younger generation, that we have to be responsible to our own mess in fast food restaurant.

But then, since they have hired people to do that, many will become lazy to clear their own mess.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because of our laziness lah, we need so many foreign workers to work in food courts, fast food outlets, makan places.

See how many cleaners needed to pick up dirty dishes and sampah at food court?

Because we simply cannot bother to clean our own mess!

      Delete
    2. True lina, those really non-value added job and non-value added employment that we need. Too many foreign workers in our country already. They do more bad than good for us.

    3. LOL...SK's this post reminds me of school time. Maybe should start from school la.

Coz if am not mistaken, last time when in primary school we were no taught to clear out plates afetr eating in the canteen.

You know la. Nobody tell us to do ma. Then from primary one sees the older student after makan and the bell rings they cabut go classs and leave the plates like that, then everyone also does that la.

Only in secondard school did i remember they put big pail at the side of each stalls. Then the student put the angkuk and plates into it after they finish eating

      Delete
  10. I think clearing our table is basic courtesy especially when a fast food outlet is super busy.

It's not fair to ask the other customers to clear your messy table for them to sit there!

Last time Ikea's cafe has "please bus your own table" policy.

Now no more already right? Because we Malaysians treat the cafe just like a roadside stall. Makan and leave. No need to bother about clearing up!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My previous company applies those policies - to put the plate, glass, fork and spoon into a huge basin after meal. No one is going to bring your tray and you are responsible for it. It's a good culture, for the next batch of workers do not have to wait for empty clean table.

Unlike the company I work in currently, I got culture shock when I firstly joined. Where is their manners? Just leave everything on the table including the cigarette butt! Yes, they even smoke in their seats. Tsk, tsk!

      Delete
    2. My company is "small" company so no canteen. Only have pantry. SO die die also have to clear own stuffs.

You know back on mid 1990s there was a water crisis in KL right. EVeryhwere no water.

There was one staff who was "kind' and used some water to "flush" the toilet ,she kena the cleaner scolded till she cried. The cleaner went to her table and scolded that girl. Just because the girl wanna "help"

But then later on we told our boss, and our boss told her boss. After that the cleaner no more coming liao.

  13. I have started to educate my kids to put all the plates and cups in the sink, before they left the dining place. So, we as a parents have to be a good example. Whatever we do at home, we have to do outside too. At least put all the things back to the tray.

    1. Ya me too. Told him he does not have a maid at home. Mama not his mid.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well, it depends. In a restaurant, we don't need to clear the mess. But in a fast food restaurant, we usually clear our own trash. Not nice to let it be cos there is a place for the trash to be thrown.

    ReplyDelete
  18. whenever i done eating i let the staff clean it though i never let my table looks filthy i always leave with a table clean all the trash were on the tray
