Have Your Bags Sealed Before You Enter
Have Your Bags Sealed Before Entering
i blogged about getting a 5-sen shortchange in the previous post.. and things are often merrier when they come in two's right?? let's make this a series then, haha!! so here's another incident i guess many of you must have experienced before, and i remember i've blogged about something similar too.. looking forward to your opinions, no matter how you agree or disagree with me, happy weekend everyone!! :)
there was one day i wanted to go to the "Let'sGo" hypermarket to buy something.. if was after my gym so i was carrying a big bag on my shoulders and another shoe bag in my hand.. while near the entrance, i was stopped by the (not certain whether a bangladeshi or nepali) security guard, asking me politely, "sir, can i tie your bag??".. of course i rejected him right away and turned back without any interest to go in to shop!! these were what i was thinking:-
  1. why would my bag has to be sealed without reason?? it's indeed treating me as a shoplifter, prejudicing that i am going to shoplift inside the hypermarket!! does everyone carrying a bag steal??!!
  2. if i were a real shoplifter, and if i were going to steal something, do i care to bring a bag this size?? and does that frail plastic band, that could do nothing once cut, able to stop me at all??!!
  3. i understand they are trying to stringent the security system, but please do it on your own security procedures and infrastructure, and not push the blame on every customers that they are going to shoplift!!
  4. this is such a disrespect to customers, it's prejudice and offend!! they are not doing things to enhance the security level, but driving away customers!! it feels humiliated to carry a bag that is sealed in the hypermarket..

    2. Yes, I agree with you on this. Don't they have cctv's all over the place? Not enough? And one would have to go and get the seals cut before leaving, so troublesome...plus all that plastic being used isn't all the good for the environment, not at all.

      Delete
    3. If they are so overly worried, maybe they should seal our pockets too? Lots of things, we can just slip into our pockets if we want. Don't they have those detectors at their exits as well? This is really too much - best to just leave and shop elsewhere...and never come back again.

Anyway if they only use the tie i still can accept la. some they went and use big plastic bag and wrap. There was a certain "Seifor" hypermarket here that used to wrap people bag with plastic bag. aiyo...after wrap how la to carry the bag

    1. Yah, especially for those who really want to steal anything, there's nothing can stop them, they can steal hide anywhere they want, can watch in news or youtube, they can hide inside clothes or bring masking tape, stick on their body or hide mana mana also...instead guess they should think of other better way to settle it instead of using this method!

    2. 小影, hi you're early today. Ya I saw in SK's FB status too mentioning this annoying think.

If to compare with the 5cents thingy, this security guard is even more polite by asking you "Sir can I tie your bag?"

    3. Good morning Xiao Ying. Long time no see.

Yes it is anonying leh. Hmmm..also will have to depend on the guard's attitude. Some guard are so rude when wanna tie people bag. those i will just walk away. but if those guards that are polite and i need to buy things from there , then i will let it be

  3. Or, don't you just hate it when shops have their sales assistants following you around?

Not to help or assist... but to make sure you don't buy anything.

My son once complained of a staff following him and I told him, in front of the girl and in a clear voice that she expected my son to steal something, So there!

    3. LMAO! Wakakakaka... This Mak Glam betul garang and straight forward. I would normally tell them "Thanks, I won't steal today"...

      Delete
    4. Ya, I've been as a promoter too. I don;t follow my customer all the time. I will approach them for the first time, if the customer request they wanted and will see on their own without my assistant I'll just leave it to them and in the other way, I'll offer my help if they need me.

    5. I kena before....so damn geram leh.

Follow u around like you are a theif or unwanted customer or too poor to buy things from their shop is bad enough....but a certain shop in a mall in kelana jaya takes the cakes.

i went there ...okay la...auntie look...selekeh....the shop assistant bring broom and tadah sampah...everywhere i walk she follow and sapu.

So damn geram i emailed their HQ. HQ reply say they stock take in morning, AFternoon baru open the shop . Hence the assistant sapu lantai., Come on la...if the shop not clean yet then dont open shop. I was there and i see the lantain was clean. another lady walked in and the assistant followed that lady...so what is the excuse? customer brings dirt to shop ah?

If like me, family outing, with 2 kids, wana go buy house stuffs, then I don't mind la if they wana tie my bags (not my handbags, but other plastic bags which are the stuffs bought from other shops)..

      Delete
    5. Example, that day we memang plan wana go buy house stuffs like detergent, Milo, paper rolls, kid's yogurt, cheese and all.. Then of coz, by hook or crook, we have to buy it also la.. Coz we only shop once a week.. Tie bags or not, still go la..

      Delete
    6. They never tie my tote bags la.. They only tie other plastic bags which contains stuffs I bought from other shops..

      Delete
    7. Eh, if like this, then you can go to the supermarket first, buy all the things you want, then put in your car.. Then come back again and shop in other shops la.. Then nobody will tie your bags lor?

      Delete
    8. But so far, only one supermarket did this to me la, the one starts with G.. Other supermarkets ok, no such rules..

    9. Then super ma fan la, have to walk all the way back to parking lot (our parking lot not quite safe, later kena mark by people then more shui)

      Delete
    10. Usually if I am carrying a plastic bag, I will tie it up myself before I enter the supermarket. I remember back in the old days at Giant, they have those people who will do spot checks when you leave the supermarket.

      Delete
    11. Big T also did that.

    12. At least none insist put your stuff in clear plastic anymore right?

  8. SK, again I agree with you! This procedure of sealing a customers' bags really puts people off. As if they already ear mark us as potential shop lifters! I have not experienced this before but if something like this happen, I would not hesitate to contact the management to complain. You are right to refuse and walk away. The guard was just doing his job and if he is polite, then I suppose it is excusable.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Management's bright idea.

I suppose they think shoplifters steal more value than the amount they might lose from prospective customers. Which is sad. And stupid.

      Delete
    2. Phong Hong, you must only be carrying your small handbag when you go out because I always get this because I carry many large bags with me. I think it is the management who imposed this so I don't think they will do anything even if we complain. I can name so many supermarkets and even bookshops doing this - tying up large bags of customers.

      Delete
    3. management sometimes also close one eyes leh. Like the incident in a hypermarket ...i email that management and tarak reply pun. they didnt bother to reply at all

another one was a hypermarket in east coast....my friend bring recycled plastic bag to shop there. The Guard darn eksyen and say only can use recycled bag on Saturday. Other day no. cannot bring in. it was like WTH...the government and every body trying to encourage go green and this guard says cannot bring...only on saturday can use.

emailed and FB bombard the management also tarak reply.

maybe they trying to sell their recycle bag kot

  9. I think well trained security guards who are polite and tactful is important. Let me share an incident. One time I was shopping at Aeon and the cashier forgot to remove the security tag on one of the items I bought. It also slipped my attention. So when I walked out of the supermarket, the alarm went off at the entrance. I was so blur, I didn't realise that I was the one who set it off.

Anyway, I went to a nearby bench to rearrange my things (I usually do that to) and the security guard approached me. He was polite and calmly told me "Miss, I think something in your bag triggered the alarm. Can you please come with me?". It was then I realised that the cashier did not remove the tag. I followed the guard and I told him nicely that people must be thinking that I shoplifted! He politely assured me no, not at all. This thing happens quite often due to carelessness of the cashier. He then asked to see my receipt and directed me to the cashier to have the tag removed. The cashier was very apologetic.

I was very impressed by how the security guard handled the situation. And as customers we must also be reasonable and polite and respond to the security guard likewise.

When I am at WHAT SON, I am always alert as they hire a bunch of blurr sotongs who always give customers a fright with the unremoved tag nonsense. Their alarms trigger almost whole day.

TM : The security guard was polite and he did not rough me up if you know what I mean. He approached me nicely in a calm manner. When he asked for the receipt, he explained to me that from the receipt he can direct me to the correct cashier. And he did not follow me to the cashier. That is what I meant by tactful. He did not draw unnecessary attention to the incident.

It has closed shop and been taken over. They didn't allow handbags to be brought it! Bummer! I think I went there no more than three times and that's one too many actually. Anyway..

Bottomline is, the choice is with the customer - to go or not to go, that is the question.

i think all these tie up people bag wont work la. terbalik the guard will be more lax in their job coz they expect people wont be able to steal with their bag tied up mah.

Maybe best way will be catch people in CCTV , print and paste their photo in the shop. make them malu.

  17. 1. I would be really unhappy too whenever they tied my bags. Not everyone who carries a big bag will be a shoplifter. Maybe they thought SK looked like one that day, without his signature karipap hair-do after a heavy panting gym workout!

    1. 2. So true. Why would a shoplifter carry such a big bag to commit the act? Hey, the burglars would sometimes drive a big lorry at night to break into the homes! 19. Frankly, who like to be tied up. So far my bag has been tied up once in a small mini market in Kedah during my Uni time... Why? it seems like I'm a thief is it? But I would still fine if they just tied up those plastic bag instead. Some security will notice whether did you bring other paper bags or plastic bag else where...then they will asked you to leave in the locker and get a temporary pass...also got. I guess the companies are trying to save cost...so kenot install many cctv and so on. Or else the company didn't buy all risk insurance to cover their loss.... Before doing that to customer, it is better to well train their own staffs and select the appropriate security company.... Even they are the most potential ones.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Big companies shouldn't have this issue. Most probably is the security company they hired they wanted it to be extra precaution. Because once if there's any shoplifters - big or minor matter, security is the party they will be aiming for... Let'sGo in my area, they don't to that to us. But hor it your sentences, you said you take a big gym bag...so probably they wanted to tie it lor. Is it the size really matter? That 's why it happen gua.

      Delete
    2. Yes the size matters. Handbags usually are ok but large school bags will be tied in many shops I went to before. I always get asked to tie because I carry large school bags and not hand bags when I go to shops.

      Delete
    3. Angeline, that temporary pass thingy, I think quite long time ago jo, now no more....

Yes, big bags sure attracts attention, and common sense thinking, big bags can carry more things, so that's why they seal up bigger bags, small bags, may be can be excused sometimes.

      Delete
  20. Tying up my handbags, no.. but tying up the plastic bags, YES! But that was long ago... nowadays before going into the groceries, I go look for trolleys then dump my plastic/recycle bags inside... then sometimes before they tie up my plastic, I Do it myself.. but normally when I go to supermarkets, I am not carrying anything yet.. except for my handbag...
Secondly, I agree with some of you.. I also don't like salesperson to follow wherever I go in the shops.. see also not selesa... :)

  21. I can actually tolerate them doing the cable tie thing, after all those Nepalese are just following orders. Blame the management for these stupid ideas. What I cannot tolerate is sometimes they make it too tight, leaving no gap for me to cut it with scissors when I leave.
But then, it's hard to blame them for wanting to take precautionary measures. The thieves in Malaysia are very good at looking good. You might not be a thief, but the thief is good at looking just like you.
The cable tie thing is stupid though. If I am a thief, I will bring the bag, then go straight to the stationery dept, get a cutter to cut the tie off, and steal a packet of cable ties. Then I will load my bag up and apply a new tie on the bag. (PS: I have never done this before though)

  22. STP so cute, always chop chop chop.

I ever encountered this when I go Mustafa Centre in Singapore to shop but I don't like it but I have no choice but to let them tie my bags cos I need to go in to shop and buy things.

Doesn't they have camera, camera should be good enough.

  23. Even Popular book stores have their security guards tie up the bags. Sometimes I let them tie because I am carrying many large recycle bags with me and I wanted to go into the bookstore. Sometimes if it is not a must for me to go into the shop, then I will walk away. I also dislike the policy of having to put our bag at a special counter and I will definitely not enter the shop and boycott the shop forever if they ask me to leave my bag at a special counter.

  24. Once when I was entering CF (now no more CF), the security wanted to tie my backpack with my wallet inside so I let him tie and then when it was time for me to pay, I walked back to him and asked him to cut the cable tie for me to take my wallet out. Now that CF is no more, no need to tie large bags under the new management.

    1. Should have take your wallet out first, kinda troublesome to walk to them and request them to cut the cable tie.

  25. I agree with you - if not urgent or important to get something from that place, just boycott the place and never buy from them.

  26. This tie thing is not that bad. Once I went to CF (long time ago that this happened), I was not feeling well so I was wearing a large jacket and the security guard asked me to remove the jacket before going in and I refused and said I was not feeling well and was feeling cold so that was why I wore a jacket then I walked into CF and wrote a long complaint note and put it into their feedback box. Maybe that is why CF is not more here.

  27. Same here. I'll turn around and get out. No point going in. There are better place to shop where they treat us with more respect. I will not let them tie my bags.

    1. Hmm, true also, it's not that we don't have other choices. But may be we need to spend extra times to go to other places to buy the things we want.

  28. Looking at the number of comments here that have not encountered this before, it seems that most people just carry small bags or just hand bags when going shopping. Usually I carry big bags and the two places that I have encountered this cable tie request is at Popular bookstores in Ikano and the ex-CF in Midvalley. Aeon Big is ok.

    1. I don't think it is any shame to let them tie the bags if we really wanted to get something from that shop. Actually tying up other plastic shopping bags are good too as we are sometimes busy buying grocery and maybe we did not notice some naughty people buying in unpaid things into our paid plastic bags from other stores.

    2. Opps, sorry typo. I mean "naughty people putting in unpaid things into".

    3. mun, I know what you're trying to say but then I think people these days no longer do such things? I think people are more civilized already. Those actions are only for youngsters.

  33. Hello hello!! I am so backdated!! You know la I was away to KL so now need to catch up on all your recent posts already!

Hmm, this one ho, happened to me before as well. Very irritating also. I just don't like my bags (though it's only plastic bags which at the end, I also throw away) being sealed with the cable-tie. I know they use cable-tie instead of other kinds of strings because cable-tie is difficult to untied, unless with scissors, so who will carry a pair of scissors when going shopping? So with this thinking the management feels secured cause we can hardly steal things and put into our bags.
But this brings us troubles. We need to cut open the cable-tie with scco else we cannot remove our things! So troublesome leh! Imagine if we just tie a simple knot on the bags or even without any knots, we can easily remove the things once we reach home, now with the cable-tie we need to cut open it and this action waste a few seconds la! Really 多此一举 one lo!

  34. Haih, but then ho, most of the hypermarket guards these days I see are foreign workers, may be they are just following what their employer is asking them to do, so sometimes cannot blame them also la! Plus in your case, the guard some more asked you politely... Don't know la, very 矛盾 :p
So end up you din't able to buy the things you wanted lo? Erm do they have lockers for people to put the bags? Though I find storing our bags in the lockers is a waste of time, it's better than letting them to seal our bags...
Speaking of lockers, some lockers will return the money and some won't. If I can chose, I'll choose not to use these lockers, and still carrying my bags into the hypermarket xDD
Come on la! Kan they have CCTV all around? If I really plan to steal things or if I really steal things, they'll know it right away and come catch me la! Like you said, if someone plans to steal things, still care to bring bags meh? Sure hide them in the pocket, under the bras/panty and at other parts of the body/clothes lo!
And if we really manage to steal things, when we are passing through the cashier security scanner, the scanner will also alert everyone la! I guess these days no more people carrying shoplifting la! That's so old school! :p

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you, sealing the bags might seems like a small action but then it's indirectly humiliating us, so disrespectful! Plus there must be a reason why we carry along our bags when going shopping, sometimes really nowhere else to put ma! If we have a choice we sure don't wanna carry so much weight when going shopping la! Right?

  35. Good morning SK and all

Today about tying bag ah. Yea i have encounter this before. saw in your FB status about it. so many opinion about this

    ReplyDelete
  36. which Letsgo you went to? So far touch wood my place here still okay . tarak ask to tie the bag. Maybe here the shoplifting thingy are not that bad la so they can afford to do that

    ReplyDelete
  37. yes it is not right to prejudice customer before they enter the store leh. how la like that. not yet masuk treated like thief.

But kudos for the guard for being polite. after all he is just doing his job. Boss suruh like that he just do like that la.

Have encountered before that the guard act like big boss. Bring bag in to certain hypermarket and he "harlo harlo." "...woi woi...." " eh eh" like that to stop and say have to tie the bag

    ReplyDelete
  38. but but when they tie the bag they also tarak think . if people wanna steal they can still steal leh. Bag can still be opened when the bag is tied leh. it depends on what bag you are holding.

anyway it is very mah farn la to have tied bag. Unless desperate for the item i wont go in and buy lor. another mah farn thing is to put the bag at customer service counter. later takut barang hilang . some more they very pandai put say they are not responsible for any missing item if bag placed with them . banyak cantik!
