2014.07.16 | 五仙是錢

[Volume 9 Issue 7, #1919]
5-Sen, How Negligible, Is Still Money..
Five Sen Change
hmmm.. a series of mimic posts, done.. a series of birthday posts, done.. comment charts for June and Q2, done.. was like suddenly run out of topic to blog when i am switching back over to my usual style, haha!! i mean my usual style of posting topics that invite discussions.. okay, here's an incident probably many of you may have experienced before, i look forward to reading your opinions, no matter how you agree or disagree with me.. :)
i have many times being shortchanged for 5-sen at fast food chains, three times at the same AFC outlet twice at BurgerSing.. if they had told me earlier that they have run out of 5-sen and asked if i mind, i certainly do not mind at all.. but the problem was that the cashier did not even inform about the shortchange, turned away to prepare your order and then shouted for the next customer as if nothing happened!! my points here:-
  1. i think under no circumstance a merchant shall overcharge or shortchange a customer, it is in the law right?? any lawyer to enlighten?? it is their sole responsibility to have enough instruments for the exact change, or at least work out other alternatives but not just play ignorance and indifference!!
  2. imagine if the cashier did that on purpose (i have valid reasons to believe it since this happened for three times on me).. how many 5-sen can he/she collect a day, and accumulate in a month?? probably a good percentage of his/her wage!!
  3. probably 5-sen is such a small amount many of us won't mind and even drop a few without realizing it everyday.. but even how negligible, it is still money, agree?? shortchanged once is fine, but repeatedly is something very unacceptable to me..
  4. once is incompetent, twice is unprofessional, thrice is unethical!!

  1. SK, I have to agree with you. In principle however small the change, even if one sen (though that is now round up or round down), it is the duty of the merchant to give back that change to the customer. And as you said, if the cashier has run put of 5 sen, he or she should inform the customer and ask for consensus what to do about it. I know 5 sen may sound petty but principles are principles.

    5. Good Morning Bloggers! I was early but could not find comment buttons! Sigh! In the end the Chef PH overtook me. Sobs!

So today blog about 5 sen. I am having headaches with so many 5 sen coins at home and wanna get rid or change it with the bank. I think they will shoo me off.

So I saw the Pisang's comments below asking for 5 sen to add into his collections. If I send him RM5 worth of 5 sen coins, I have to courier them at RM4.20. Rugi lah dei.

      Delete
    6. Princess Ribbon misses him everyday instead of asking for others. Your sugar daddy is busy farting & counting his 5 sen coins elsewhere la. He will be here soon! Just be patient.

      Delete
    7. STP is still gallivanting in Bintulu.

      Delete
    8. Sugar daddy? I'm laughing please.. STP cannot become sugar daddy la.. He always say this cannot afford that cannot afford, how to become sugar daddy?

      Delete
    9. And he always threaten by saying bye to cruel world.. I scared he "tai mm hoi", if breakup with him or what, he "tai mm hoi", go kill himself and bye to the cruel world, wah, then forever I guilty lor.. Cannot cannot, behsai behsai, cannot become sugar daddy la him..

      Delete
    10. You make me laugh lah, Louiz! STP is only interested in food and kampua noodles. That is another reason why he cannot be sugar daddy.

      Delete
    11. Both of you twins have wrong ideas. He can be a sugar daddy cos he loves chocolates and anything too sweet. Even ants would bite him when he sleeps. His blood is too sweet!

    14. yes, Phong Hong.. i guess we also faced the same problem last time with 1sen right?? many places, fast food chains and supermarkets, tend to shortchange by a few sen.. those days when we still have the 1sen coins, 5sen is actually quite significant.. be it 1sen or 5sen, it's actually not the amount but it's the ethics and integrity of the business.. and it's our principle..

      Delete
    15. Yah, is the principle thingy...so usually I will prepare the exact amount, even has the 5sen well prepared if not there'll be a lot of 5sen at home, the 5sen also money mah...so is still usable wat!

      Delete
    16. Indeed Phong Hong comments got it straight to the point.

      Delete
    17. I feel the same too. They should give back and if the customer decided not to take then they baru can masuk tabung or pocket or whatever mah

anay...if you have too many 5 sens coin DO NOT bring and chance in bank or for the matter if you have tabung of coins dont bring to bank. bring to the roadside nasi lemak seller and they will happy change for you . coz now those banks charge you money to change coins leh. Last year i bring J's tabung to bank to bank in and they charge entah rm8 or RM5 to count and masuk the account leh! Grrrr!

Significant or not that is not an issue but the principle is they should give back

To me, SK is like a Kinder Chocolate Egg, full of surprises.. You'll never know what's he's going to post.. Hehehehe..

    2. Eh, about your incidents, wah, I experienced many times liao lor.. Uncountable times.. Especially with McDongDong.. I usually drive-thru one, on the way back from work.. Sometimes mulut gatal, wana drive-thru munch on some nuggets or milk shake.. And I would say, most of the time, they always short-pay me back 5 cents one la..

      Delete
    3. It's like, you hutang them, cannot.. But they hutang you, can wor..
Not only McDongDong, I think other fast food chains also like that leh..

      Delete
    4. I have also seen the opposite.. Like the person in front of me, the cashier gave him back the change.. Got 5 cents also la.. He immediately put the 5 cents into the donation/charity coin box in front of the cashier.. So maybe people thinking "aiya, you give me 5 cents also no use la, chor-teng somemore, may as well I put in the charity coin box"..

      Delete
    5. No ahh, I never think 5 cents is such a small amount of money.. I always think, "sikit sikit lama lama jadi bukit".. Imagine if one customer, they short-pay 5 cents.. 10 customers already 50 cents.. One day, takkan only got 10 customers right.. If 100 customers, then how much liao? You do the Maths lor..

      Delete
    6. I'm also an aunty kiasu, but I gotta be frank also la.. Later you say I'm hypocrite, hehe.. 5 cents is still money, but if they give me 5 cents, I will think very "chor teng" also.. Sometimes, I accumulate and I give it back to the toll cashier when I pass by the toll lor.. I normally use my T&G, but if I have many 5 cents coins, I'll give it back to the toll cashier la..

Do you notice that many drivers don't care about zebra crossing? Pedestrians have to look out for the cars and not the other way around. I very fed up chor! Everytime at zebra crossing the cars just zoom zoom and like that might as well abolish zebra crossing because got no meaning liao. Oooppsss...sorry ah...grandmother story coming out...

    13. Oh yes Phong Hong, I notice that too.. When I sampai the zebra crossing ahh, I got to look out for cars leh, scared.. When it's time to cross also I have to look right and left and still feel scared wana cross leh.. Not the other way round, kekekekeke..

    25. yes, Princess Ribbon.. though 5sen is just a small amount if you view it in segregation but then see it from a big picture.. like you say, if they are going to shortchange every customer by 5sen, they could really earn a handsome amount of extras in a day!! but then i am not so bad lah, i won't give all 5sen, i think the most i have given is like 4 to make it 20sen only lah.. 80sen all 5sen coins, a bit bad lor, haha!!

      Delete
    26. Hahaha, I think got people doing that, because I saw before, like they already wrapped nicely at home noted there that outside of the paper as Rm1, so when came to cashier...they just gave all coins to the cashier...aiyo!! When see like this must go to another lane, as it'll keep forever to queue because the cashier needs to pour all out to count >.<

      Delete
    27. wei...if the cashier give the 5 sen back but customer put in donation box is lian cerita la. main thing is they should give back mah.

It is the customer's right whether to give the 5sens as donation or as tip or whatever leh.

I think the customer who wrap coins and give to the cashier must have been a pissed off customer who have benn short changed once too many time.

Unless la the customer is old folk. I remember when i was small...we would count the coins and wrap RM1 in newspaper and bring to shop to buy things. Shop keeper very happy coz they are always looking for more coins

      Delete
  3. *clap clap* to Phong Hong.. no baking today? :)
Coming back to 5 sen or sens, I really did not think of those coins collected by the end of the day.. maybe I seldom visit fast food chains..really very rare I eat fast food... but when I do the groceries like Jaya Jusco or Tesco, normally they will give back the change of 5 sen but not anything less cos nowadays all rounded to the nearest...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Same here babe.. In hypermarkets, they will usually round it up.. I only encounter this situation when I drive-thru in fast food chains.. Sometimes, I can't be bothered to sound them or kira with them, coz I'm rushing to go home ma, so after I pay at the cashier, I terus drive to the front to collect my food liao.. So no time to check the change and count the coins also..

      Delete
    2. But I feel hor, we must not keep quiet also.. Consumers are always right ma, and even 1 cent is money also.. Money is hard to earn.. Imagine if 10 customers x 5 cents = 50 cents liao.. If 100 customers? How much liao...

      Delete
    3. We Malaysian must learn to speak up. Most of the time we quietly accept and therefore customer service will not improve. And the cashiers think it is OK to just "makan" the 5 sen.

      Delete
    4. errr, i think not only fast food chains lah, places where they charge you the 6% service tax, sure there will be high chance that your bill has a 5sen.. and nowadays, still there are supermarkets and hypermarkets that are still pricing their items at X.X9 and not rounding to the nearest 10sen!! those are really irritating lah.. that is why, i always buy three items at a go, so that it ends up with 7sen (3 times 9 is 27) which will be rounded down to 5sen.. they rugi 2sen to me better than i give them 2sen extra right?? :D

      Delete
    5. I thought everywhere have round up the sum. Is fine for me. I have nothing to worry about the 5cents because I always have faith with my 5cents... Once I always sued the 5cents to pay anything... if I have in my coins dompet. (Just to get rid of the 5cents actly) But hor... not later, when people gave changes back to me and then Aikss.... the 5 cents to come back to me again...huhuhu! So until now, I already sudah biasa with 5cents and slowly I feel 5cents also is tiny but it does matter the most when we need them.

      Delete
    6. wei...not only fast food chain la. Some supermarket also like that. Like i have mentioned earlier....one outlet of a supermarket chain likes to do that at my place. cashier always tell me say sorry miss...you ada 5sens coin ka? Kita dah habis.

If i say takde the cashier will round up instead of round down. 3times i went there 3 times kena . I wanted to ask the cashier eh that day i over paid 5 sens why not you deduct from there ah?

But then would look like very siew ka...kedekut

    5. TM tQVM its the thought that counts & that's truly good enough no need send pos laju juz pulling Chris's leg. Like that collect 5 sen no syiok one, must personally buy things to get the 5 sen is more challenging. Very very rare to get a change of 5 sen nowadays, so Bananaz would purposely go buy bananas by looking at the price tag ending at RMX.03 then only got chance to get the 5 sen change.

      Delete
    6. hahaha.. i actually have no fond on specific coin denominations lah.. i usually carry my coins with me and try my best to get rid of them soonest possible.. those coins are always useful when you go fast food or grocery shopping.. or for people who are driving and not using TnG, tolls and parking..

      Delete
    7. That's what I do also...but I remember when I was in HK..I tried to give the cashier coins, he refused to take the coins, and just take the big note, because he wants to be very fast as he lazy to count the coins, just take the big note is easier than count the coins! =.=!

      Delete
    8. wah bananaz they no give u no go ah...but what if they say they habis 5 sens already? then say thank you for bthe 5 sens discount ka or demand they die die go find and give leh?

Hahaha...i recall last time cashier more concious they will dig their wallet and pay the 5 sens or 10 sens if got shortage . then end of the day baru take back

      Delete
  5. No likey the new 5 sen coin, the size too big always confused with 10 sen. The older 5 sen is so 'cute' can even feel the difference between 10 sen even without looking at it. Unlike now have to see, double see and final see to make sure if its 5 or 10 sen.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree. I even have problem with 20 sen and 50 sen. Maybe my eyesight is getting worse.

      Delete
    2. Those are damn fools who created almost the same sizes in gold. They should have painted our 50 sen in pink and 20 sen in blue.

      Delete
    3. But color coins won't be helpful for the blind.

If different size much easier. Soometimes it's hard to check the ridges that mark a 50sen coin and a 20 sen smooth one :(

      Delete
    4. oh yeah.. i have problem with the new 5sen and 10sen, as well as the gold 20sen and 50sen.. i wonder who's the moron who designed the new coins, making them so difficult to differentiate!! if not in different shapes, at least make the gap of the size bigger!!

      Delete
    5. What to do...is bolehland here...as you said! Hahaha...my mom always tried to avoid paying that when she goes to the morning market as some peddlers might confused with it and also the Rm10 and Rm20...really don't know who's smart idea was that >.<

      Delete
    6. I agree the size doesn't help. 5 sen and 10 sens looks similar and 20 sens and 50 sens looks similar.

like Xiao Ying said...boleh land la. Apa apa pun boleh.

      hmmm...

      Delete
  6. Errr...Most of the time I also don't count the coins. This is especially in restaurants where they will gave you a lot of cents instead dollars. They can even gave you coins in one dollars, hoping you won't take it but leave it as tips!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't really count the small coins in restaurants la, depending who I go out with.. If with my hubby ok la.. I count, and I take every single cent.. But if going out with friends, I don't usually count and sound the waiter la "where's my 5 cents?"

      Delete
    2. Depends la....If good service, I will leave tips else all masuk my pocket.

      Delete
    3. errr.. i am very uncle one, i count my change one woh.. and i have a habit to jot down how much i have spent everyday, down to the cents.. that is why i count!! :D

    4. rich man Chris no need count la. Can always say Keep The Change. LOL

Aunties like me will count coins leh...kedekut mah.

some more i can always fall back into the line that says It's a matter of Principle. Muhahaha...

But seriously la...makes me wonder why some cashiers would want to keep the 5 sens coin. Is their self worth is only 5 sen? I am not saying this on those who genuinely no more 5 sens to return to the customers but for those who have but they go and omit in giving back to the customers. whether it is RM50 or 5sen...intentionally did not return to customer is counted as stealling....maruah diri is only 5sen meh?

  7. I guess for big establishments like these mentioned franchise should have enough coins. It's a shame that they shortchanged which I believe it shouldn't happened. Not too sure if the staff actually purposely do it to take the extra.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Chris, quite true the management should be aware to keep all coins of various denominations for day to day use. Bananaz so far so good can get 5 sen coin change with ease. Agree with you most probably the staff did it on purpose.

    2. Perhaps SK should insist and remain rooted at the cash counter to hold up the line until they pay you the 5 sen haha.

    7. Very true Chris, usually grocery shops, 7 eleven, hypermarkets, even wet market or night market... should spare more coins. Hubby and I keep alot of coins in our piggy bank at home... once every year we will shake come out all the coins and count like hell... The piggy bank is so heavy... hubby keep shaking hopefully the coins will come out faster. Then we sort it out from 5cents, 10cents, 20cents, 50cents and also foreign coins...it took us two nights to settle that. Each bag contains each coins and written outside nicely how much is here and there. Merely RM250-RM300 we've simpan in the piggy bank. Then I exchange the coins not with the bank but to a Wantan Mee seller... he really needs alot of coins (almost every day) for his business and even 5cents he wanted as well. If I'm not wrong, if go bank to get coins, usually they will charge a fee...I'm not sure how much.

    8. Princess Ribbon, haha! I think our friend SK sure don't wanna get famous via this way! xD

    9. but then Sk not that thick skin face leh. how you expect him to stand in the line and hold back the line wait for the cashier to give him back the 5 sens.

You know what i did...i geram liao i email to the HQ and ask why is that particular branch keep tarak 5 sens coin. let the HQ investigate. Yea they might investigate or they might nkt coz after all it is only 5 sen. But for those whose management is good they will investigate la. Not right to condone stealing by they staffs., if they can steal 5 sen from customer....sooner or later they will become more daring and curi a bigger amount and maybe curi from the company leh.

  8. I think in the future, maybe you can get ready some coins like 5 cents to give them. Though not your responsibilities, it's better not to keep too many coins in our pocket too. I usually make sure I have small changes whenever I took cab as the drivers usually gave me a face when I handed them 50 dollars note.

    1. I will keep the 5 sen in my purse and if my bill comes to something something with 5 sen, I happily dig out the 5 sen to pay. I learnt that from my partner. That's how we get rid of our coins and avoid being shortchanged,

      Delete
    2. I had a coin pouch ..... that will solved my small change problem. Also can use it to buy 100 plus after work out.

      Delete
    3. yeah.. it would be good to carry some 5sen.. just in case you asked why you are being shortchanged of 5sen, and they say they run out of 5sen.. give them one piece of your 5sen and get them pay you 10sen.. so they would also have one piece of 5sen for the next customer..

      Delete
    4. Yes, great idea ChrisAu! I do make sure I have 1 or 2 5 sen in my purse, of course not just 5 sen la, other coins as well. Sometimes really feel paiseh if the thing I bought is RM 1.10, but I give the cashier RM 2 to change, haha! So must spare some coins all the time.

  27. Yep, anything also must at least ask before hand, rather than just act like nothing, 好像没事发生理所当然这样。。I understand your feeling here, like totally being ignored. Ya la 5 sen is small but still is money ma!!

    1. Correct, no merchant shall overchange or shortchange, that's something so 'common sense'! Have to do business the proper way.
They should really prepare enough instruments for example small change and coins every single day, and must check the availability regularly, I think this is something every merchant should obey la!
If there's really no more 5 sen (or other coins), at least have the courtesy to tell the customer politely, it's a service attitude they must understand.

    2. Huh? I cannot imagine why the cashier did it on purpose lo! So dishonest leh! But really, if everyday collect a few 5 sen, slowly can become a value already.

    3. Correct, 5 sen is small, actually I think many don't mind about it, but it's still money! Collect 100 5 sen is already RM 5 leh! Sikit sikit lama lama jadi bukit ma!
Ya la sometimes it's unavoidable to run out of coins for certain shops, but if too frequently then means something is not right la, must do something about it.

    4. Very well said SK!

  28. Wah, I am so late today. I say must speak up, especially if it is a chain store. If 5 cent is so small, why don't they waive it if they don't have 5 cent change. They don't because every cent counts so we should get it back. Some pa ma shop did waive the 5 cent when they do not have change so they are really nice shop keepers.

I did speak up a few times when it is a franchise establishment and lo and behold they did manage to find a 5 cent to give me as change. Good night!

Here, I did pay using two 5 cents before and they did accept them so I am surprise to know that they refused to accept your two 5 cents. What if you say no more money, only have these two 5 cents, then they would have no choice but to accept them, right? I guess they won't say no if you say you have no other money apart from the two 5 cents.

  33. #01- Ignore totally will worsen the situation lor. Being a cashier is not an easy task. Easily and always will short of money… many hypermarket they always give an extra of e.g: RM100-200 as a cushion for them, just in case there’s a shortage incident the amount will deduct from there. Shortage in hypermarket will always happen. So if they don’t have shortage for the month that amount of RM100 -200 will be their monthly allowances - a motivation for the cashier to act honest all the time. We customer has the right to get back our 5cents change.

#02 – Why everytime happened to you one? Or your face too sincere easily bully by other people… hehehe. Just pulling your legs. If it keeps happen to you in the same hypermarket or shops. You can either report to the service counter. Bring your bills as an evidence. Furthermore, get to recognise the cashier face or their staff /employee number…. So they can go investigate them. The best is to complaint on the exact day… not 2-3 days after that. Or else the evidence not so concrete already. We are not trying to get them in trouble but just want to make things clear.

#03 – If in your purse you have one or two 5cents… you can’t see that much. But if you keep inside your piggy bank and just continue to save more a longer period, you can actly got more than that. 5cents is very tiny, in order to have RM1 you’ll need to have 20pcs of 5cents.

  34. If the cashier doesn't have 5sen to pay me back, then the cashier should pay me back 10 sen, other Yannie will wait for the change at the counter. I am serious ok. Two 5 sens is 10 sens. But if the person informs me politely, I will accept it. Attitude is very important.
