The 7th Month of The Chinese Lunar Calendar
The 7th Month of The Chinese Lunar Calendar, Hungry Ghost Month

it's mid of the 7th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, or commonly known as the Hungry Ghost Month.. i guess i do believe in spirits and souls in the afterlife world, as i remember when i was still young, i was quite haunted and bothered by all these "things".. for example, if there were funerals (especially the Taoist funerals) nearby, i would be scared by the noise of the chantings and instruments from the funerals until i dared not sleep, i was frightened to even walk passed the funeral that i wanted to avoid it by taking alternative routes..

anyway, it got better as i grew up and i told myself there is no need to be bothered by all the unnecessary thinkings.. i think most of the Chinese believe that for this month, the gate of hell is opened and spirits are free to roam for the entire month, hence probably the scare.. on the other hand, i have also read about another saying that, the gate of hell is open but only for wandering spirits to return or to be sent back to the afterlife world through the gate, only in they go and nowhere they could get out to roam.. now, i choose to believe the latter.. we are present in very separate dimensions, though both dimensions actually exist at the same time, and at times the frequency may draw us together.. however, just like between humans, as long as we respect one another, there should not be any worries.. this is not a month to be haunted by spirits like many old sayings and what are shown in commercial movies, but rather to show respects by observing the taboos passed down from generations to generations.. :)

    1. Sharon will be busy this month cos she will probably hopping from one getai to another getai catching her favourite singers....hahaha... As usual, she will post getai events on her blogs this month.

Its actually an exciting month in SG as there will be a lot of getais around but of course, we also respect the events.

  4. Yes, I am also like you when I was a child. I used to be very scary whenever th 14th day of the 7 month came. Well, during then, I thought it's only one day when the hungry ghosts roam freely on Earth and not the entire month. Probably as a cantonese, my parents only burn the offerings on this day, unlike others dialects especially Hokkiens. So, good thing is I am only get 'scared' by a day or night... hhahahaha...

When I was a kid, I do easily got scared of it and the stories told by the elders make it worst. They can go into details like the gates of hell open, ghosts roam everywhere and one of my relatives claimed he even heard the ghosts running on his roof top , which were made of zinc then during the kampung days...muahahaha...

And, not fogetting the ghosts movies shown on tv and cinemas which inject so much fear in me. As a kid, I think this is not healthy. I don't even dare to go to the toilet at night or sleep alone.

  5. Of course, just like you, my believes slowly change when I grow up. Though I still respect the traditions, I kinda don't bother so much about it especially after I embraced Christianity. When I was a teen, I still try to avoid late nights on 7-14 just in case I met with bad luck. Well, even our parents forbid us to go out at night...hahaha...

Now as a Christian and adult, I just freely go anywhere (except the graveyards and haunted houses) at night and even do my evening runs. And, not just me, even many folks also run at nights in the 7th month and business as usual.

On the other hand, I will never disrespect the tradition like insulting folks who burn paper money, but hope they respect others by not anyhow litter the streets. The good thing in SG is there are designated places for folks to burn their offerings. Well, I am sure cleaners have more work to do during this month,

  6. Actually, the 7th month has turned into some sort of festival in JB and SG. I don't know about other places but it seems more vibrant than silent here. Every neighbourhood will organised getai and you can listen to live songs performed by seasoned getai singers, who deem this month as a time to make more income or bonus. It's just like florists who profited more during Valentines Day or Mother's Day.

There are also places who organised makan session with as many as 20-30 tables where there are getai singers entertained them as well as emcees who speak in hokkien and mandarin to host the event. There will be auction of some good luck items. Mostly businessmen operating business in that area will attend and try to auction for the items, in order to bring luck to their business.

  7. I also used to avoid funerals when I was younger and there were certain times , I will fall ill after passing by or witness a funeral. My parents will said I got 'affected' by the funeral and started to buy some paper offerings from the shop , who sort of like a chinese medicine shop where they collect all the 'required papers' to be burned. It's just like they collect all the required herbs to be boiled like Chinese traditional Medicine shop.

Nowadays, I just pass by funerals in SG where they held it at the void deck of a government public flats and I can;t be bother by it. I just go home as usual and don't complain about the noise and just close the windows and on the air-cond. I respect it by walking by the sides or try to use an alternative lane. Just try not to trespass into it as a sign of respect.

  8. Oh... I do believe in spirits and demons but I am not sure if they are living in the space as us but in different planes and dimensions. I guess Anay can relate better on the supernatural...muahahahha...

Anyway, I agreed with you that we should respect , just like humans as well as don't do evil as karma will always fall back on you. Try to do good, be kind, good temper, sleep well, stay healthy and cheerful and do not think negative or garbage thoughts. We will be well.

Also, do not involved in occult for greedy and evil means.

  9. And, I also noticed there are more ghost movies shown on tv or cables during the 7th month. Thus, it is a good month to it back and enjoy some horror movies, especially those that we missed it.

I remember just only last weekend, SG tv shown a HK horror movie..hahaha...

    1. During that first year after having Kz, he cried non-stop a lot in the middle of the night at the 7th month.. I tried not to think so much.. Then at one time, he kept staring at the ceiling in our living room, smiled alone.. No point if I ask him what is it, or what he saw, coz he was still a baby that time..

      Delete
    2. Then one day, when I brought the boys to nursery, while waiting for teachers to come, Kz suddenly pointed front and say “Mummy, see”.. I asked “What?”.. He said “There”.. I said “What?”… He said “Neh… There”… *goosebumps*

    3. Aiya, but I tried not to think too much.. “ping siong sum” lor, kan? This time also, no think too much.. I have other things to keep myself bz and think about.. Rush home, cook, do housework, bla bla, kan…

    4. But I guess the most good thing about the month is, Astro got lots of scary movies.. But most of them also night time one, around 10.30pm..

    5. I seriously very takut to watch scary movies at night unless if my partner is around. I watched The Conjuring a few months back. After the movies I was scared for a few days hah..hah...

    6. wah ... princess sounds so scary with her KJ story ... I also had goosebumps if I heard little kids said such stuffs. But then, I remember when my kids were baby, they will laugh spontaneously at something. To me, well, its just their little behaviour and probably they are playing alone but to my mom, she said they actually had a guardian angel with them and they are smiling at them.

Well, not sure if its true but I just go along with it, as long as they are healthy.

    1. In fact yesterday evening, from my office window I spotted a guy piling up some paper offerings at the parking space opposite my office. But I did not hang around long enough to see what he did, I suppose he burnt the papers. Aiyo, already the haze is very thick liao, we do not need any open burning.

    2. Usually around this time, you will see red joss sticks being poked into the ground at the grass turfings, Also sot paper plates with kueh or some sort of food in it. I always am very careful not to accidentally step on those. Must not offend the unseen!

    3. I believe that ghosts and spirits exist. We need to respect rather than be afraid of them. I cakap saja, I am very coward one leh. I love to watch scary movies but will only do so when my partner is around or I watch the movie in the morning if I am alone.

    4. I have been told that just as much as it is considered bad luck for us to see them, it is also bad for them to see us. Don't know true or not. This very much reminds me of the movie The Others.

      Delete
    5. I was also told that if our energy level (qi) is low, then the bad spirits will be able to disturb us. If we are high energy, then we are immune to them.

    6. There was one time when I went to a nursery in Sg Buloh. I went into their display area for pots and decorative items. The place was quite dark. I went in followed by my brother and auntie. My auntie claimed that she saw a white figure following me. When we left the place, I felt extremely tired, like totally drained of energy. I was told that these spirits can suck your energy. Luckily the next day I was fine.

      Delete
    7. Apparently, when our energy level is low, we can also see these spirits. They come in the form of black shadow. It is best to just ignore and not say anything if we see anything of that sort. And of course lah cabut quickly from that place!

      Delete
    8. Also, don't think about them. Once our mind starts thinking of them, we are putting in place a connection for them to tap into our frequency. That's when the evil ones can come and kacau and give us a scare.

      Delete
    9. Usually very young children/babies can see these spirits. Sometimes they will burst out crying when taken to certain places that are "unclean".

      Delete
    10. I used to live in a haunted house and there were things that happened there. I did mention one incident in a post. I think I better don't talk or think about it now. Must not create any frequency for these unwanted guests!

    12. Actually, these wandering spirits are everywhere, just that we can't see them. Except for those people who can see ghosts. It must be unpleasant to be able to see ghosts and spirits. Just like in the movie The Sixth Sense. We have to co-exist peacefully with these beings - I go my way, you go your way.

    13. Phong - I just jog around the neighbourhood and witness lots of folks burning papers. I also pass by some after-burn papers but try not to step on it. I guess its best you leave office earlier this month.

Oh..you stayed in a haunted house before, maybe can share in your blog this month ? Must be an interesting story.

  13. Yes, a lot of horror movies on TV and I didn't even watch one yet... I believe there are spirits everywhere... just don't offend.. and pray for protection each day like normal days...

  14. Agreed, as long as we show respect, then it should be all fine. :)

  16. No comment on this. Each to their own beliefs. One thing is for sure, respect for culture does not extend to practice like the suttee and some other practices that I rather not mention here. Open burning whatever for the death should be replaced by some modern practices that do not pollute the environment. Hahaha I say no comment but in the end also I commented. Maybe considered out of topic so potong markah.

    1. mun - I agreed with you. Try to respect the neighbours and cleaners too by burning at designated places , if any. Now, there are burnings everywhere including car parks and the cars ended up grinding the offerings , which are mostly food too.

And, when I step out of the car, I almost step onto the offerings. Even in condos and apartments, lets respect other races and religions by burning at designated areas.

So busy every day, hahahaha! I slept like a dead fish myself. Never had any nightmare except getting dream of my husband might have infidelity when leaving unattended by me at night. Muahahha! Seems like I scare of that more than ghosts on Chinese Lunar Month of seven. Kekeke!

Nowadays, human is more scary than ghost la!

    1. I didn't more about the gate is opened for those spirit in "yang" dimension to return to "yin" dimension. Thanks for telling me this, at least I should not have worry about that at all. I learn something today.

      Delete
    2. That is why when people die, the family will do praying ceremony to 超度 for the dead. So that the dead will leave the "yang" dimension peacefully. The spirit is no longer need to suffer from what have done before passing on. I am sure our Anay will contribute more thoughts on this. He is now on vacation and shouting Bersih instead of Merdeka at Philippines with wifey.

    3. In fact, like you say, we don't do anything bad or harmful to anyone, therefore we no need to worry of ghost will come to seek revenge from us.

I actually enjoy watching ghost and horror movie. I would terrified after watching, but I still wanted to watch. Hehehe! I believe the existence of those spiritual creatures too. I am sure that them won't harm us if we don't disturb them.

      Delete
    4. Yes Yannie, just do good, be kind and you need not worried about anything. Only those who did evil needed to be worried... hahha... it's a chinese saying.

      Delete
    5. Chris, you are right. But then that Chicken and Hippo killed the mongolia model and did so many evil to us, but they are still alive and not getting haunted by ghosts in Chinese Lunar Month of 7th. How come ah? I am wondering. They must have done lots of "jambi" to secure themselves from spirits. Haiz!

      Delete
    6. I also love to watch horror movies not just to scare myself but to see some logic behind them as many film producers usually created a horror movie after getting real life stories and assemble them together to scare the audiences like you and me. They may not always label their movies as based on true life stories but I do know that they had to get inspirations from real life stories. Sometimes they just modified them so that they do not need to pay any royalty fees.

Talking about that Chicken and His Hippo wife, they both had plenty of merits which are almost ending now. By then they would fall flat like shit pancakes. Just be patient for cause and effects to take place.

  19. Yes, we don't need to be bothered by this hungry ghost month. Just make sure we don't disturb any of those prayers being carried out. And probably don't simply talk nonsense about it even if we don't believe it. Just to be on the safe side.

  21. Yes, am like you too when I was small and till now will react the same . if there is a funeral or a wake at the housing estate, i would avoid passing by the said house . or if no choice, have to pass then will walk fast fast to avoid looking at the coffin and the big photos of the one who pass away. You know la the old days the coffins are very big and the photos are as big as a nanner geh. Some more with the tong tong chiang sound from the instruments and the chanting...really scared the hell out of me lo . Could be due to my elders always say not to see those things coz the spirits of the dead person may follow me home if my luck is bad that day or something like that. some more there is story of cat jumping over the coffin and the body will wake up again and catch whoever nearby .

when small that time very scared lor. even when daylight , will avoid it lo if possible.

Now..still scare la but know that if tarak kacau them ...they wont kacau us la.

But will still avoid passing by the house due to habit. Luckily nowdays not many will do it in their house. People will opt for funeral palour instead.

    1. I have also heard of those stories about cats jumping over the hearse and families of the deceased would always be on their guard. Now what are you talking when you are just another Small Kucing cat!!!! Beware that you don't buta buta jump over one.

Take it easy and don't be so silly to be afraid of deaths and coffins when you see one. Someday you and I would be in the same shoes too. You talk as if you need to avoid at all costs. Just pass them naturally and not avoid them okay. Look at their framed photos and say a short prayer for them to go in peace. They happy and you happy too!

  22. Oh...so far i have heard the first version only about the spirits from hell gets monthly annual leave on that month to visit their relatives and loves ones. Didn't know that it is also a chance for roaming spirits to go back or transist to and afterlife.

    1. Kucing - Could be due to the weather? Its very hot nowadays with periodic rains in the afternoon. Sometimes, weather like this can makes us sick.

Another probability is most of the folks are very busy at this time as most of us wanted to clear our work before year end. Thus, with not much rest, we can easily fall sick too.

That's a scientific point of view, anyway.

      Delete
    2. Whether we can see, smell or dream of them is also a way to connect with their real existence. When you fall sick could be due to your frequency being against or clash with their presence timing.
That's why the Chinese astronomers and sifu are so smart in calculations since a thousand years on advising us humans on the do and don't. So this is also all about scientific which Kurage only thinks weather is hot.

  29. I was opposite from you when I was a kid. When I heard the drums and bugles of the funeral processions from far, I would run half a km from home to watch those old fashioned Chinese funerals. I was not scared but more than confused why the humans had to die. It was almost twice weekly that I would witness those funerals and paid attention to the lanterns, scrolls, Taoist monks and mourners wailing under their straw veils.
When I had moved to KL and visited my hometown again, did I realize that my old home was located along the route to the cemeteries and crematorium in the suburbs. No wonder I saw them often.

  30. So I just mentioned that I was not so afraid of funerals as a kid but I was very scared of darkness throughout my young days. My mum had to take me to see a doctor as she was worried sick of my frequent nightmares. Muahahaha

  31. There are different beliefs and theories about the 7th Month's annual rituals that have been carried out by different folks. Besides this hell's gates being opened to let out or let in the roaming ghosts, I have heard about it being a very auspicious month whee an old Chinese emperor who arranged for many monks to chant big prayers to save his month who was suffering in the Nether World. I have forgotten the lengthy details of this belief and where it was written in some religious texts.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It has been written in the sutra texts that there are 8 dimensions in this universe and they all overlap each other in the universe. The Buddha's level is the highest and they could see all the 8 dimensions while others do not see all.nthe human world is the only dimension where the spirits like us have temporary physical bodies during our lifetime here. We also do not see beyond this dimension except for the few who have powerful antennas to connect beyond this human world. Anyone can also be connect if they are diligent in prayers to clear the obstacles. It is like you being able to write the precise HTML to get the connections and desired results.

    ReplyDelete
  33. oh...Anay is back here though his physical body still in Makati..muahahaha..
To me, I am afraid of funerals and I always get sick when I pass by one. My mom then will said I got 'impacted' by the funeral and bought some paper offerings to clear it. That was the old time but I also remember I was very cold that night and probably kena a flu la.

I am afraid of the dark too if I am alone but its ok la when I am with my parents. Anyway, I stayed opposite a 'dirty' park where there are many suicides there and I always heard stories till I almost panic especially at night. I think this is not good for kids but then during then, parents doesn't know so much about a child psychology well-being.

I always wanted to go to my aunt's place to stay when I was a kid then, where I grow up there.

    1. I often heard about young kids who had a hard time about the unseen during their childhood years due to many factors. Sometimes their time of births are are too yin and might also be affected so the parents would consult the sifu mediums. You felt safer by staying with your aunt and it made me guess that her house is in a better protected environment.

Remember that blogger who talked nonsense and doubted all the spirits & karma thing in his blog. He was possessed and went nuts till today although recovered a lot. He is so terrified by the whole haunting tales and dare not poke fun again.

  37. Happy September, SK and folks. A new month and a new hope. I salute and respect those have sacrificed their valuable time and weekends for our next generation and future. I proud of you who is fighting for us too.

But, why I can't leave comment to condemn that two scary and biggest ghosts in our country. That two ghosts are more horrified that those ghosts in Chinese Lunar Month of 7th. They are sucking our money and our future.

    1. The 2 ghosts you mentioned will be history soon when the Mongolian ghost comes to revenge. Our country is going bankrupt now because of the 2 greedy ghosts. We need bigger ghosts to catch them.

    1. Every year our Hungry Ghost month falls on different dates of the English Calendar. We follow our own Chinese Lunar Calendar which is widely being followed by the Chinese community in Philippines.

    1. Muahahahaha... You guys need not observe all this Chinese traditions if you don't have such beliefs in your religion and culture. Everything is in the individual human minds. However it is a must for us to respect all the souls, spirits and unseen friends everywhere.

    1. I am not sure why you try not to do any renovations etc during the Hungry Ghost Months. I would say the Chinese would avoid such renovations at home when someone is pregnant at home otherwise the unborn baby might be affected by all the sharp and dangerous tools.

  42. Hmm ya, it is the 7th ghost month now. And last Thursday was the 14th, I kept reminding myself about it! And elderly say don't go out at night, especially small children.
But you know what, end up hubby and I brought the kids to Aeon mall, haha! But I make sure they had the 平安符 on la, and we back home not later than 9pm. Hubby said wanna bring them go jalan jalan la, else if they stay at home very bising one, LOL! He just cannot tahan the noise... xD
Lucky at the end, nothing bad happen la! You know sometimes when we go out at night, small children will get 犯到肮胀东西, they will cry and become cranky when they sleep, cause those things like 'kacau' them during sleep... Happened to Aden few times liao, so I will bring him to 问神 in this case. Believe it or not, he gets better everytime after 问神. Really cannot explain how~

Your experience when you were young is normal la, I guess cause we were young, we din't know much about the 3rd world so we will get frightened easily whenever we see funerals or hear about those chantings. But as we grow old, we know that if you don't do anything wrong, you don't have to be afraid of those things. 平时不做亏心事,半夜敲门也不惊嘛! I always believe in this one.
If you think you hear/see something unusual, just say some chantings in your heart, of say it out, and say excuse me to those 'things', like 借过借过, or 不是故意的... Be polite la! Hehe~

But talking about 3rd world, actually I really wonder do they actually exist! And hos is it looks like if it really exist? Really got heaven and hell? And those offerings we prayed, do they really 'receive' and 'use' there? Hmm interesting ho? I guess different religion got different views about this 3rd world...
