[Volume 10 Issue 8, #2048]
Profession versus Professional
All Kinds of Professions

how often are you being consulted by people around you on things related to your profession, but you actually think those need professionals to answer?? haha, i know you read that sentence three times and are still trying to digest what i mean.. to make it simple, it's like consulting a solicitor on a donation and murder scandal (because they are lawyers), or asking a cardiologist to perform a caesarean delivery (because they are doctors).. it's exactly the topic of this post - profession versus professional..

you see, i work in the so-called IT line, and because of that many friends and relatives around like to ask me whatever computer related.. to be frank, IT is a very general term and itself a vast industry (they never have expected) that involves almost infinite areas and each sub-domain under every area has got their own specialists.. i may know, or know little, or even know nothing about many areas, but because i am seen as the "IT guy" around them, i am expected to know what they wanted to know.. this is certainly not the case, i may know a little scripting but i definitely cannot do all kinds of programming and web design work.. i may know how to install software (based on the manuals) but i definitely know nothing about computer networking and architecture, not to mention repairing a computer.. too bad, all these are just "IT" to them and i am expected to know all things.. many times i am just speechless on these expectations, i wonder if i shall cry or i shall laugh?? :D

  1. I know exactly what you mean! As an accountant, I get that too. They ask all sorts from tax, gst, accounting treatment etc, etc like I am expert in everything financial related.

    1. I guess I am guilty of that myself. I always ask my brother about anything to do with the computer. When my monitor died, I kacau him, when my cpu died I also kacau him. In fact, when my smartphone do funny things, I also consult him hah..hah... Just because he knows quite a bit about computers, I cannot expect him to solve all the computer related problems.

    2. Just like doctors. The GP may know a bit of everything but will have to refer patients to the specialist if the illness is more complex.

    3. Goodness!!! Phong Hong got the FC today!!! You ate the FIRST CAKE today!!!! Was it delicious???

Hey you are an accountant cum Chef Diva in The Kitchen. So should I ask you figures or recipe stuffs????

      Delete
    4. TM, at this point in time I prefer to be asked about recipe stuffs hah..hah... When I am on holiday back in KT, I totally hate it when people come up to me and ask about how to reduce their tax or ask me anything to do with tax or GST. I am on holiday! I don't want to talk about tax!

    5. i agree with Phong Hong totally. I hate when I run on the treadmill, people start asking me about my work-related issues. I don't want to talk about work during my leisure time at all. I prefer people ask me about cooking, baking, dieting and other more casual topics. May be I am trying to escape from my work tension.

      Delete
    6. Yannie - Just tell them no talk on work but focus on relaxing matters lor... like fashion, food, workout, gossips and etc. hahaha...

    7. Not as easy as said leh, Chris. When you say no talk work ah then some will start bitching why so stuck up dun wanna help etc.

    1. When you have computer related problems, just spam in SK's blog non stop until he noticed your sudden surge in his chart. When he asks what's your problem, you can pour out all your IT heartaches to him. I am sure he can solve it for you. Maybe you can invite him to meet you in JB. Tell him you know where is the best Cheesy Mutton Curry and he will be there in no time.

    2. ohhh.....means now you having IT problem ka Anay. Sudden surge in spamming wor. Kkihkihkih

no need to be so troublesome la. If wanna ask the just direct ask SK. If he knows then he will advice. if he doesnt know then he will tell you to get professional help lo by then must be not thick headed and presist to pester sk la. if he say cannot means cannot lor

easy peasy...direct. no need turn so many corners

  3. You are very correct in your second sentence.. I read that two times to understand.. First glance, I think I understand la.. Read second time to fully understand.. Ermm, depends one wor.. Like if you say gynae, then it won’t go wrong.. We ladies, go to gynae to check on our well-being, not just for pregnancy checkups.. Can go check for scanning (breast/ovaries), then take PAP smear, take the cervival jab, etc.. I mean, if for gynae, we know where to go..

    1. But for certain stuffs like paed and general doctor, like those in Medivron, errr, like I say, it depends also.. We sometimes also bring kids there if the kid has fever or flu.. General doctors also can attend to simple basic kid’s thingy like fever and flu and cough, even chicken pox.. But of course if wana go deeper, like autism or speech therapy or more to specialist side leh, then of course have to refer to specialist.. This one, I think many parents know..

      Delete
    2. It depends one la.. If kids got fever, and we wana be convenient, we just bring to clinic nearby our house or any Medivron nearby.. Won’t think of brining back to the paed in the hospital lor.. Unless the kid is still very small, like a few months, then yes, bring back to paed, take leave, what-not.. If kids big already, just put Kool Fever, go to tadika as usual, wait til one of the parents is free to take half-day, then only bring to nearby clinic..

      Delete
    3. Back to your question, sometimes, I see doctor asking the nurse what’s wrong.. And in government clinic, nurses do all the stuffs.. And they only ask doctor to come in if got complications or something’s not right.. And… the pharmacist is “bigger” than doctors I can see.. They prescribe the medicine one wor.. So, yeah, sometimes, people ask the pharmacist about medicine and illness and not the doctor.. You got a point here..

      Delete
    4. As for IT leh, you are right.. This one, mention IT only, people expect it’s an all-rounder, hehe.. Coz IT ma, wide profession.. Even like you said, programming and designing and even auto-cad thingy also termasuk dalam category IT.. Uikks, even repairing computer also termasuk in your rice bowl ahh, canggih wei, hahahaha..

    5. I used to be an idiot to think that all doctors know how to treat all types of sickness. They only focus on their liking and become a specialist in that ailment. That was me!! Wakakakaka

      Delete
    6. When there's a clinic nearby, and the kids/ownself unwell, we don't think much.. We just want to go to the nearest clinic to get some medicine to tahan first, get a MC and rest at home.. I'm talking about common illness like fever, lausai, migraine, etc.. It's common people go to one medivron for all kinds of illness, and sometimes, they really know a lot of stuff about it :)

      Delete
    7. Princess- Those are GP where they treat all diseases but served as front line. However, there's a limit of what GP can do and they have to refer patients to a specialists if the disease is serious.

    8. then am idiot number 2 lor, Anay. Coz i also thought that when I was young. No reason to think otherwise coz touch wood never had big probem that needed specialist doctor's advice or help.

usually if sick last time...will go doctor. After all company pay ma. Ask for vitamin also from company doctor

but now self pay...then have to start googling synthoms and remedies lor become self expert and buy medicine from pharmacy lor.

Actually when comes to PC problem or handphone problem, am not expert. When got problem will try google it. See got similar cases and how the people solve it. Nowadays we can get solutions to almost anything from googling leh. Not bad ya,

My phone rosak i also google and found out the reason. So that when the repair guy talk technie , at least i agak agak know la.

I think maybe Sk does that too. he will try to help his relative as much as he can but when the things he really dont know then have to leave it to the expert lo

Whenever I am my in laws home, I was being asked lots of questions on IT specially on ISP and notebooks as well as computers peripherals. They thought I am a remisier where I can answer all questions related to stocks! And when I can't answer their questions or try to be smart Alex (which i hate it), I feel bad and incompetence. I received mockery , though it's a joke from my friends when I was not able to help them (who were trying to save some bucks) but I also smart la..ask them to change the piece of hardware which disappoint them.

  9. I guess there's a limit on what an IT guy can do regarding certain situation. Some folks have interest in networks, some in hardware, some in phones and etc, though it's not their specialization. So, to these folks, they can help out on something they know very well but not on other aspects.

Even a heart surgeon may be able to diagnose certain psychiatric illness like anxieties which has an effect on the heart. And, an ENT surgeon may be able to treat flu. But a dentist definitely cannot treat cancer and etc.

    1. Same la what SK had said. Just that sometimes when you tell the person who ask for help about this they will think wrongly and think that you so LCLY don;t wanna help them.

  10. However, if given more time, I am sure IT folks like us can resolved certain issues. We just needed to sit down and study the issue and explore several alternatives. For example, to improve data speed, we tried on different channels on or routers. All these info can be found in the manual or forums.

    We just need time.

    1. Anyway, for some complex stuffs like server maintenance or developing a software, we needed to leave it to the specialists to do it.

    2. I agree that IT folks can make many impossibles into possibles, just need time and effort to search from forum through internet. The interest of knowing more is essential. If no interest, everything is impossible.

I think that is the only time you can relax and be with your family right,? tak kan la wanna use the time to go fixing the IT stuffs. If it is the thing you know already it will be a two minutes job la. If need to sit down and google thing and that to learn more about that problem...how? But then as I mentioned, we are not really that dummies and it depends on what we knew and still, we can advice others on what we knew and it's also easy for us to pick up IT related stuffs if needed. 4. I don't like to consult people on the profession, i think doing this way will make people feel tension. Especially this is happened on non working time. For eg. I mix with teachers, accountants and bank officials in the gym. I don't ask them or consult them based on their profession. We just talk or chat on other topics. It is very irritating to consult things on their profession while people is working out. People will find such professional topics stressful. I find it stressful too if people asking me about IT knowledge. I don't really like to answer when I am exercise.

    10. Hello Yannie.... I didn't know that I have given any benefits to you. I thought I always blabbed too much like a grandma. Until my coffin lid closes, I never forget this gila SK called me a Grandma when he first bumped into me in the gym. So bad. Phiak his karipap head. More to come as sharing is caring always.

Now talking about career choice. Letchumy always told all her students to take up IT line as career as it has the widest and brightest future to blend into the growing IT world. The IT jobs will expand like infinity as it is applicable into any industry now. Every company need IT support to stay afloat and ahead. Even coffin shops, hospitals, supermarkets, listed companies and etc etc needs them in any country. They don;t need to worry about languages as these experts like SK speak IT language, HTML, KNNCCB and CB all the time. Jokes aside now, please groom your 2 princess to have a footing in IT and the other foot in other line if they prefer. Now Letchumy is a Master Trainer for Computer Science and Robotics because she is a very rare candidate who ever hold 2 certs in IT and Educational degrees. Now under CMU's program, she flies overseas twice a week. Poor anay at home talking to the tortoise.

    11. Letchumy is really a rare species of woman. She has so much passion in her life, she continues learning in all fields that she likes. I salute her. Yannie only finds time to sleep and exercise. Shame on me.

It is true that every business and job needs computer and IT knowledge, especially now with GST. Small or big business also must computer. Therefore, computer and IT experts are on demand. SK's scripting is so powerful, he is the most wanted IT expert in all companies.

    12. Hi Yannie... if you ask me this question, I would not though IT has been very stable for the last 2 decades and shielded from economic downturns. However, it's a stressful and dynamic career, maybe meant for energetic folks. I am one who prefers little changes, thus jobs that don't required much change suited me better. Oh...btw, I don't accounting and teaching but my dream job is a pharmacist or nutritionist.

    13. Yannie - I would prefer my kids to involve in sales line cos they can earn a lot if they are hardworking. Learn some domain knowledge on how money and economic works and that will work to their advantage, rather than grinding out programming codes during late nights and on weekends.....

    14. Being a sales person, when people ask you regarding things that you sell or promote, you are so willing to answer. You cannot ignore their question on your products or services. Being a sales person, must be attentive, well-spoken, sociable and patient like our Anay. I don't mind my girls into sales and marketing line too. Indeed, IT line is too tough.

      Delete
    15. I think what Yannie say is true. Take up IT is good. It have a bright future. Now everything also talk about IT. Even in Sales line will need to know about IT matter. From IT also can branch out into sales

Yes, anay very helpful with Fengshui matter Probably coz your laser mouth talk so much la and your brain darn sharp to see many unseen things that we commoners can;t see or not aware off.

Working in Sale have it pro and cons la. Must also know when to quite sales and branch out into managerial position. For youngsters, doing sale is good as they can learn in the "University of life" but as we grow older, we have family and commitment...we tend to slow dawn. Big company will only look at sales figures. If our sales figures cannot achieve target then that's it bye bye.

If financial stufffs, I prefer friend to ask those related to my field instead of not related. It would be wasting my time to call this and call that and do research just to answer the question which in the end the one who pose the question will say oh...ok...i saja tanya only.

  20. 哈哈哈哈,完全明白及贊同你嘅感受。因爲我都喺IT搵兩餐,就連點樣hack人哋部腦、面書或電話都問我,未免太睇得起我囖。

  21. I have many friends in the IT line, but IT can mean many things, they have programming, networking, software and repairing, I seldom ask for my friends' help because I do not want to trouble them and because they are too far from me, so I usually trouble the person nearest to me, my youngest sis, but now she is married so next time if I have computer problem I have to approach other people

    2. I can understand how you feel, sometimes because people ask for your help as they "see you up" but you find it hard to reject them or say no to them

    3. 4. But I think IT can be interesting or monotonous depending on how you look at it, I always admire those people who can do all kinds of IT stuff related to HTML, scripting, programming and what not

When I told them to just send it to the shops, because that is what I will do too, my mom would ask, "Why waste money? You can do ma, wait for a bit only"... "No, I can't"... "Why not? You do COMPUTER programming stuff right?"...ZZZzzzzzz...

    2. That's the thing, most folks doesn't quite know about IT yet. They thought it's like the old times when you study electronics, you should know how to repair a radio or any players or TVs in an electrical appliances shop. Even an electronic engineer doesn't know how to repair a TV...hahaha... as they have their specialisation.

  23. My kids also irritated me when the wifi is slow. They have finished their school work and when it's time for them to enjoy playing games or watching their favourite youtube videos, then the network started lagging. They will yell ...Daddy...why the internet so slow... And, I was always dumbfounded.. but I asked them to on and off the modem/router and if cannot solved their problem , I will tell them the wifi network does not belongs to their Daddy, thus stop asking me!

  26. Yeah, IT can be very subjective and wide... my son studies E n E and there are some electrical item that I need him to repair but he couldn't... see, not every field is related though the word is common.. hahahaa... so I do understand what you meant...

  27. IT related problems are often seen as a simple task for the IT professional. When my computer has problem, I will try to solve it myself. Otherwise, I will refer to the IT sales and service person. Sometimes, I will ask any friends who are IT professional.

  28. But you are an IT guy and an IT guy SHOULD know all of the above :P

Same lah. I'm a blogger, you are too. You know scripting and all to make your blog more interactive where else I only know how to update content. The rest, my blog partner handles. But ppl expect a blogger to know it all.

    1. What a wise comment. I am a blogger and I am quite hopeless in doing better layouts like others. I am still learning from everyone.

    2. Haha same here! I am a blogger too but lazy to go explore those scripts, for once I asked someone to design a nicer template for me, but so costly! If not mistaken, it's about RM 400++, walao!
So forget about it la, I better just use those templates provided by Blogger, simple also jadi la!

  29. Hmm I think you wrote something similar before this, isn't it?
Anyway, it's common for people to think like that la, it's our mindset.

When we got questions about health, we will go ask doctors, any types of doctors; when we got questions on computers, we look for IT guys; when we got questions on education, we look for teachers. Haha xD

Like me, I also graduated from IT field, erm software engineering to be precise. So meaning I only know software (that also not all ok) and programming. But when people heard I am from IT field, they will come ask me about hardwares also, haha! Some I may know, but most I don't know la! I major on programming one ma! Hardware, may be learn a bit only la~
Sometimes really wanna help but too bad, 有心无力~ But I will try my best to find a solution for them, like ask someone else or go Google about it for them. I am that helpful, kekeke :p

True, IT is a very general term, same goes to others field, like health. That's why we have so many types of profession, even those small small potato also count as very 伟大~

  30. Good afternoon SK

Yes, i did have to read that sentence 2-3 times. Was wondering what the heck you are talking about . I think I understand la a bit.

Similar case to you la. I worked as loan shark before. Then when people heard about that, they will ask me things that is financial related. Alo! my job was to take out big Parang and go after the defaulters only leh. You wanna know how much USD you should invest or on cheque book have how many pieces of cheques, mana la aku tau. Go to your bank and ask la. Not every bank have the same practice or offer mah.

What is worst is that when they refused to consult the professional, and things goes wrong they will say Kucing cakaaaaaaapppp.....adui
