[Volume 8 Issue 7, #1757]
have you ever been approached by some perfect strangers on the street asking you for money?? they looked anxious, telling you that they lost their wallets and asked if you could spare some money so that they can take transport home?? and most of the time, the amount they asked for will be just minimal like RM1.50 that you may anytime accidentally dropped it without realizing.. i have to say that i am always caught in a dilemma if that happens to me, if i help and that could be a con, if i choose not to help and that person could be real unlucky.. many times it is impossible to differentiate the genuineness, and with the many deceptions that had happened in this society which is getting less safe, please forgive me but i would rather be a bad guy refused to help than to be conned at the cost of my sympathy.. or a second thought, perhaps i should think a little more positive, just help if i can afford to help and make myself believe that i have done a good thing, and even if it was a con, that they actually did that with a reason.. how would you react then?? to be positive or to be negative?? :)

    1. Tough cookie, this one. I think I have mentioned this. I've given RM10 to the same man in two separate occasions. How could I be fooled twice, right? But I was and didn't realise it until later.

It was the same man with the same tactic and even at the same place. Sigh! It happened a few years apart. I guess my feeling for his sad story ruled my head and suppressed the memory.

I can say without a doubt that it was a real case of deja vu.

    4. I think India and China have the most beggars after hearing from friends' polls. Some are genuine beggars while others should be able to work with healthy limbs.

I had seen lots of unique beggars in USA. They are different from the Asians. many would write big cards with messages that could make you laugh sometimes.

The common ones are old men with placards like "I am a Vietnam War Veteran, please help me. I will work for money".... Goodness my friends told me that the US govt would have glorified and gave them pension if the fought in the war. Well, not many people knew their rights and simple donated.

Some beggars were younger and muscular men with placards like - "I will work for FOOD only. No money please!"

Others were many hilarious messages like being thrown out of the house by their spouse and kids.

Many beggars had strong alcohol smell and even smoked. They loved to grab Asian students by their shirts to ask for money. I always ran for my life!

    5. here they expect you to pay money just like that leh. Really la see them also still strong. Can work but maybe begging is easy money kot. worst still is some woman would carry a baby and ask for donation. The baby dono is it really hers or rented from some irresponsible parents. sees a lot of that hawker center or pasar malam.

Yesterday it was a rather morbid post.

Today another thought provoking and serious post from SK.

It is good that Ah Boy is looking around at the realities of our human being's lives. There is so much to discuss and debate besides learning a thing or two from each other. I am happy that many bloggers shared new ideas with me. BAGUS!

I know it's for his school but rather than him looking for money, I'd rather donate them mtselves.

A senior manager in my company asked her assistant to go around collecting funds for her son, asking lesser paid staff to donate. Not right lah...

Anyway, I prefer fund drive like selling food, car wash, talent times rather than asking kids hustle ppl for donation.

    2. Like you said, there're too many con cases these days, really hard to differentiate, and it makes me miserable also... If no help, people might think we're so cruel, if help, we might be the victim! Haiz...

    3. Even small children or elderly would involved in those con cases, thinking we'll surely help them cause they are pitiful. But still, always be cautious, sometimes it's more important to 'help' ourselves rather than to bring troubles to ourselves.

    4. And to answer your question, if I am in a situation like that, most probably I'll say no and walk away. Well, that's me, can be quite 'heartless' sometimes, hehehe :p
But if those people are handicapped or really very old already, then I'll help still la!

  11. Good Morning Bloggers.

We need to be wiser than the con men to counter them. I have met them several times at shopping centres over 10 years ago. I wasn't so smart then and gave in because the amount requested was so minimal like how SK described.
If I am not mistaken, one asked me for RM4.50 to make a call and take a public bus back to Seremban. Another asked for RM8.00 to catch a bus to Klang plus a nasi lemak meal. He was shivering that day and I thought he was a drug addict but he told me he was being extorted that morning on his way to college. How pitiful stories! I just closed my eyes and gave in....

I just remembered this 2 vividly but have forgotten others. Once bitten twice shy.

    1. All beggars think alike! If I have to become a beggar I would be hanging out at the fast food and eating outlets where there is high traffic of sympathizers! You would feel guilty to chomp your food happily without taking pity of a hungry soul at your table. I think the rate is still bearable in Malaysia compared to our neighbouring countries where their beggars trail you everywhere! Their government didn't do much to curb these problems. You won't see such people begging at fast foods in well developed countries like Japan, Singapore or Hong Kong.

      Delete
    2. ask for food is okay la not as bad as asking for money. Some you give them food they dont want. They want money

There was one lady beggar in Sibu. we were having breakfast she come and ask for donation. We say no. Then she ask for food. Okay la ngum ngum got one better cake gave her one slice lor...She took...ate and walk away. Then wipe her dirty hand on the shop wall!!!

terkejut we all see that. You can ask STP and Quay Po Cooks. STP said the lady got family punya. dunno rich lady or what .

Entah why become like that. Maybe too rich too stress kot?

      Delete
    2. I agree that donations need to be channeled to the right NGO for genuine helps to be distributed. I personally saw syndicates who fetched beggars to the public areas to beg. I heard a friend saying that her blind cousin comes from a well-to-do family but chose to follow a syndicate who would fetch him to beg everyday. He shared with the syndicate his earning but that blind man could easily take home over RM6,000 each month!!! That is a lot man!

The blind man's parents objected to his beggings but gave up as he was persistent that he was earning an honest living by begging independently without parent's support. Sigh!

  17. This type of case didn't happen to me, not even once, but it happened to my husband before.
    My story is as below,
That time, I worked Singapore, my then boy friend went to visit me, he waited to catch a flight at the airport. One family, a couple (husband and wife) with 2 kids (one boy and one girl). The father brought along his wife and kids and came talking to my husband. He said he lost his wallet at Genting Highland, he wanted to go back to Singapore. He showed their Singapore passports to my husband.
He asked my husband to loan him RM300. He said he would return the money when he went back to Singapore, he gave my husband a contact number.
When he took the money, he and his family left airport with a taxi. My husband thought that they might be going to bus station and take bus to go back to Singapore. When my husband reached Singapore, he tried to contact the man. Then only we realized that the man gave us a call center number. How sad, right?
Anyway, my then boy friend had done a good thing by lending them RM300. When my husband returned to Malaysia, he won a lottery of RM30K. His car plate number came out as the first prize in Toto.
He lost RM300 but won RM 30K. I do not know how to explain this Karma thing until today. I think Anay can explain this well.

    1. What a big surprise!!! I knew this Jin Jin has a good heart even by looking at his photos. Honestly I will never fork out RM300 to lend a stranger like how Jin Jin trusted him. That was more than 10 years ago and the value could be over RM500 today!!!

No wonder Jin Jin's kindness even moved the heavens!! He was being rewarded in return by many leaps and bounds!! Good for Yannie, married the right Prince on the White Horse!

How come Yannie could think that Anay can explain this karma thing? Anay's heart may be kind but not as big & kind like Jin Jin's heart. I must meet this man and shake his hands someday.

Hey he won RM30,000 and that was so long ago! I think it could be over RM50,000 value today. I would have gone crazy and couldn't sleep for a week.

Today I learn this story and will remember to share with everyone. I am sure Yannie has more hidden and shocking stories in her sleeves!!!

  18. Under the Theravadin Vinaya 227 rules for monks and 311 for nuns, one of the rule is ~ money should not be accepted by a Buddhist monk or nun in lieu of or in addition to food. NEVER to offer any money to any monks when they come around during lunch hour in kopitiams carrying their almsbowl. Monks go on a daily almsround (pindacara) to collect food only and it must be in the morning as the 227 rules prohibit eating of solid food after 12 noon.

    1. You are right and so well informed about these rules, Bananaz! Were you a novice monk before?

Each time when I took my mum out for meals at coffee shops, these bogus monks would show up with the bowl filled with amulets, bracelets or cash notes inside. My mum would get very horrified and angry before taking the monks to task. She would ask them if they were Thais? If they replied YES, she would give them hell and told them off for their wrongdoings and warned them to go back to their country. The bogus monks would shiver and vanished into thin air! Muahahahaha
