25.01.2013 | 請假食藥

[Volume 8 Issue 1, #1659]
maybe it's the weather, my body gets heaty and naturally this is followed by slight fever, tonsillitis and coughs.. say me kiasi but every time i feel something not right, i'd rather get treatment earliest possible.. the chinese say "treat your illness while it's still not acute" as you do not want to drag till you suffer greater pain right?? when i was in high school, i don't take leave even when sick, because marks were deducted if students were absent from school for any reason, rethinking this i kind of feel like it's quite unreasonable huh?? anyway when started to work of course it's best to be able to take sick leave and rest at home, the company grant you 10 over days of sick leave, why not utilize them?? haha!! of course now that i'm seeking for job, there is no medical claim, so i can only be my own doctor and have my DIY prescription.. the paracetamol, cough capsules and lozenges above are quite effective, after two dosages and a good sleep, i think i'm quite well recovered, grateful~~ :)

You must be popping in too many peanut cookies.

Drink more fluid and sleep more can make you recover fast.

    2. Today, Ah Hua not in office. I hope I am not too busy to spam.

I am like that also, very proactive when sick. I will go for doctor almost immediately. Then I can recover fast. I won't drag till the next day one.

I am scared of coughing and sneezing one.

    3. But then, I am very seldom going for Chinese Medicine. I will mostly go for Western doctor, because Chinese medicine takes too long to cure.

    7. Hello everyone!

Aiyoh.... Ah Boy not feeling well ke?

I'm feeling a buit under the weather also these past few days. Lazy to visit doctor yet, so just popped a few panadols. xD

      Take care ya, Ah Boy!

    9. Good evening, everybody! I'm reporting from klang valley :D

Ah Boy is not feeling well, and so am I. I blame it to the weather, one day hot and sunny, the next day it will be raining and cold. Just like today, it rained early in the morning, like 4-5AM, and it continued to rain until 10AM and then the sun decided to shine brightly. But in the afternoon, it rained hard again.

My poor body cannot adapt to it that fast, I'm not an amfibia.

      Delete
    10. don't get yourself too rely on panadol, the more you take the less effective it will to you.. take sparingly and usually i try not to take and let the headache heal by itself..

yvonne, looks like the weather pattern is alternate sunny alternate gloomy huh?? so today's weather should be nice for you~~

So I got very rely on western medicines and antibiotic, haih...

    2. yeah, the traditional Chinese herbal medications is better but then if you need more effective and speedy recovery, guess the Western chemicals are better.. it's all about choices and preferences.. :)

    3. I rely on Western as dunno anything about traditional medicine.

    4. I'll try both western and Chinese medicine, guess I'm more kiasi, haha! I go to see my company doctor first, then pop some Chinese medicated hall medicine after 3 hours consuming the pills.

      Hope I'm not overdose :s

    5. Antibiotics are bad, many side effects. Good western doctors will not prescribe unless it is absolutely necessary...and it depends on your ailment.

Some will prescribe for anything...and administer steroids, Will get better very fast...but the worse is yet to come! Watch out!

      Delete
    6. Chinese medication not until at least 6-8 hours after taking western. There have not been researched on the two together so best to stick to one...at any one time. You may be doing more harm than good, Yvonne.

    7. very true with what STP has mentioned above.. chinese medicine is for long term health treatment, may not be that effective in short term.. and yes, you should take caution if you are taking both chinese and western medication at the same time.. one may reduce the effectiveness of the other..

lina, you dunno anything about traditional medicine?? nah, you know kote mamak so well than viagra, hahaha!!

Funny enough. when i bake muffins and cupcakes alike, i dont really eat them. Just taste aje.

    3. i think Mak Yannie bakes more and she is very strict on herself, she must taste all her cookies seriously to have the best she could bake.. somemore Mak Yannie always health freak (she claimed herself).. but very true with that, after lots of cookies, must have lots of fluid to cool down else you get heaty very easily..

      Delete
    4. Meow, after baking where does your cookies go? Kitty cat eats them all or Kaldip?

Mine usually feed the hungry ghosts in the office, lol! But that is after I ate 50% of them. No wonder my weight stuck like forever, no reduce.

  5. SK, not all company giving you sick leaves for free le! My KNS company will deduct our bonus and allowance if we take one day sick leave in a month. Full attendance, they give us RM50 per month.

So, cheapo aunty like Yannie, sick also work la! If too sick then take annual leave lo! Kesien or not?

That's why Yannie very very scare to get sick one.
One sign of cough and "Ha Chiu", I will zoom to clinic.

By the way, I am really very proactive in this area. If I sense my children unwell too, I will rush them to clinic almost immediately, or I will feed them medicine and be their doctor myself.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Actually, Yannie ia home doctor to my kids, I can treat my kids quite well one. Because I am following up their sickness since babies. I stock up their medicine whenever I go to their paediatrician. Then, I label all medicine with date of expiry and keep in the fridge.

So, when we go travelling, I will take all those medicines with me.

    2. LOL...like that I was the luckiest . Got so many annual leave and Sick days from the company.

My former company gave us 30 days sick leaves plus 2 days compassionate leave(if family hospitalised) and 3 days compassionate leave if family members pass away. if not enough with that, there is paternity leave some more leh :p

Too bad no incentive if tarak utilise the Sick leave. Because of that , some who doesnt have enough annual leave o use will fully utilise the sick leave too and what's more it's paid.

      Delete
    3. Yan is right. So last time when I was still in that company, sick also drag my butt to work, just for that RM 50 and full bonus...
So many of us go spread virus in the department, haha! No choice la, RM 50 is a big amount of money leh!! :p

      Delete
    4. aiyoh, what mean company is that!! where got such things, but i think this is actually not good.. with the deduction, they are forcing and encouraging people to come to work even if they are sick, and when people are sick, they are less efficient and the chances of doing things wrong are higher too.. not a good strategy at all.. but of course, people may also abuse the medical leave and stay at home to rest.. well, always a predicament there lah, difficult to have a perfect solution to this, people always find loopholes..

  6. Anyway, Chinese New Year is just around the corner, please don't get sick. Take good care of your body. Drink plenty of water, do exercise a lot, eat well balance diet, sleep well, and you will be all well. Am I talking too much here alone?

  12. Ahh you're so lucky! Recovering in such a short time! I have been coughing for more than 3 weeks now, it's awful! I have taken so much lozenges, paracetamol, cough syrup, antibiotics, it's not even funny. Luckily now I have reduced my cough to probably less than 20 times a day, which is a huge improvement compared to 20 times a minute!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I fear coughing too. It starts with maybe 5x per day to 5x per minute. But frankly, I'm quite slow in taking action. I wait for a day or two until I finally go to the clinic. Then when I don't recover for the next 2 days I panic and I go to see more docs, to the Chinese medicated hall and self-medicated myself :p

Last time when I coughed, it would be the 100 days cough. It means cough for 3 months, the doc sure asks me to go for X-ray.

      Delete
    2. hmmm, cough is actually something that takes long to heal, never will recover in couple of days.. i actually find chinese medication more effective for coughs.. have you tried that??

  13. You not well ah SK. Like Yannie said, drink more water la. Must be eating too much Mandarin oranges is it?

Eh what is that brown color med ah? Looks like the "yoong Tham" from Chinese Medicine hall. Said good for duno fever or what. Last time I took Yoong Tham before but doesn't really works for me.

I would go for western medicine also coz it's faster heal though not really good for our liver and kidney la if takes too long or too much.

Some doctors are very good. They calculate the dosage of medicine based on body weight. some will just follow the dosage on the label.

For me i also agree if ill then have to go see doctor fast fast. Dont wait till "tenat" then baru see doctor.

I have a friend whose father have diabetes. One day his father was feverish. Just took paracetomal. Asked to see doctor but he doesnt want. Then become more serious, masuk hospital, coma and tong tong chiang already. It's just so sad.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. no lah, i have not eaten any mandarin oranges yet, haha!! i guess it's the weather lah, i always felt my throat very very dry during sleep and especially when i wake up every morning.. guess that's the culprit..

the brown color pills are for coughs and phlegm.. quite good, it's not chemicals but traditional herbal base.. it's from the brand Hurix.. they also have pills for flu, which i also find quite good.. at least it won't make you dizzy after taking the pills..

yalah, elderly must not ignore all illness whether light or acute lah.. don't drag till it becomes serious and then sure it gets more troublesome..

      Delete
    2. SK isn't teaking Mandarin oranges, he is kissing someone whe ate mandarin oranges. The result will be the same.

If jin jin coughed, I coughed too. You know what I mean.

  14. Don't know am doing it right or wrong but whenever J not well, I would bring him to see doctor soon as possible if the medicine that I give him is not working; instead of waiting a few days for whatever it is to receed/go away.

My other half would say wait and see. But I kesian see the boy suffer unnecessarily.

  15. Your school so trict ah? But I guess Chinese school is like that. Just saw someone blog say chinese school have point system . each student 40 points and if deduct till zero, then will be expelled.

My school was different. Instead of points they give certificate. if you have 100% attendance in the year, you will receive a certificate saying so. Then there is also cert for full attendance for 3 yrs and cert fr full attendance for 5 years. Surprisingly quite a number of students received the full attendance cert for 5 years leh.

Me...I only have full attendance for 1 or 2 yrs only . Ponteng paling banyak is during form 5 and form 6 years. Ponteng supposed to stay home study for the exam geh bsince the teachers finish the classes jor but stay home end up do other things. Form 3 still dare not ponteng leh.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yalor, i remember the points deduction is by number of class somemore.. for example, sick leave is to deduct 0.001 points per class.. one day we have 9 class so it will be 0.009 points.. never look down at these little deductions, once a classmates initially #1 but because of the deductions dropped to #2 already..

wah, so good one got certificates for full attendance ah?? haha.. i think the school did that because there are too many incidences of "ponteng"?? :D

      Delete
    2. Lucky my school not like that.

I don't really attend class when I was in Form 1 & 2. Spent way too mucyh time doing other stuff - tournaments, contests and stuff.

  24. In Thailand, the folks often have this saying in Thai that "Water is Medicine" because drinking enough water daily could flush out toxins and prevent sickness.

However how many of us would drink 8 glasses of plain water daily?? Anay often forgot to drink plain water!! Bad Anay!

    2. Aww... Thambee keeps reminding annay to drink more water and takes care of his health. Such a sweet brotherhood.

We must at least have 8 glasses of water daily. We can opt for juice, but water is the best because it's 0 calories, easy to obtain and no need to process, except boiling :)

But it's not safe to drink water when you're in India or so my friends said.

      Delete
    3. if Ah Hua sicks (touch wood) thambee will also keep reminding Ah Hua to drink more water and take more rest lah.. hehehe!! thambee very fair and no bias one.. :)

but then have you heard that you cannot drink too much plain water also?? too much, i mean, is really a lot which normally quite impossible for us to consume that amount.. this is "water intoxication" because when you drink too much water, the electrolyte or nutrients balance is affected.. because of the differences in concentration, particles from your cells will diffuse into the excess water (because of osmosis), and cause problem.. errr, don't really know how to explain this, but still drinking water should be moderate like you are having anything else..

      Delete
    4. Agree SK.

Moderate in everything. Too little or too much will not be good, even with drinking water. :)

I drink coffee too, and I drink plenty of water.

      Delete
    2. ooh, you better drink more water if you are having coffee.. coffee is very dehydrating, better replenish yourself with some plain water after that.. of course moderate amount and not too much, else you get "water intoxicated"..

  30. Bananaz will do the same self medication with TCM to keep the body heat down or take cough drops whatever. Even when kena food poisoning will buy carbon tablets plus those orange flavour stuff in sachets etc from pharmacy. When all else fail will have this thought, Bananaz owes the Dr money must go to repay then can recover faster.

    1. When getting old, we tend to do a lot self remedy at home to cure ourselves, then seeing doctor.

Me too, I will drink honey lime, gargle with salt water, take penadol, and etc. If all to no avail, then go seeing doctor and pay $$$.

  34. Well it was ok to self medicate
as long as your illness wasn't that serious
i mean if this includes unusual scenarios on your
    body better get checked first

  35. and if taking various medicines didn't
work even it was just a typical coughing
you will have to see the doctor still,
because this little thing might be a sign of
    a huge illness

  42. DIY?久病成医,其实我们都知道一般的病需要吃什么药,也知道自己的身体是什么原因生病。只要不是太辛苦,我还是会去上班,不是因为太勤劳,只是很讨厌过后回去上班时,一大堆工作。
