20.12.2012 | 知書識禮

[Volume 7 Issue 12, #1634]
when everyone was excitedly talking about this books sales, i saw this report from the paper but cannot help laughing deep in my heart.. let's not verify if this is the real situation, but the before and after comparison really reflects what i thought about the malaysian ugly attitude in my mind.. the chinese says "educated and well-mannered", this best shows the negative side of this idiom.. the people may seem very "educated" with all the books they are grabbing, but simply replacing the books at their convenience and making a big mess of the hall shows how "not well-mannered" they are.. it really needs a person to love the books beside just merely own the books.. just like me, even if i make a little wrinkle to my book, i do feel a bit upset.. anyway, everyone has their own way of doing things, i am just expressing my views but not hinting anything.. :)

    1. Me too. hehehe.

But then, every year I went to celebrate my moon cake festival at Taiping Lake Garden. After the festive, sure newspaper showed the picture of the after event. Lake garden had become garbage garden in just a night. So who to blame, us the people who went there.

Our family would throw everything in the dustbin and cleared up the mess before we left the spot. But, sad to say that not everyone did that.

Many people have just lack of moral and courtesy.

      Delete
    2. that is also a sad case..
but last time when I went to Bersih 3.0 and I saw a lot of people taking a big plastic bag and taking up rubbish on the street..

    3. I don't think I'll manage to visit BBW. Will be busy starting this weekend because my son is soon attending nursery. Have to bring him for the orientation week.

The ugly side of Malaysian, we are ruthless and selfish. By looking at their parents' doing, the children will grow up following their parents footstep. Please enough with the ignorant and selfish people.

      Delete
    4. truly this is the ugly side of malaysians lah.. everyone seems to have that "aiyah, little bit never mind" and "i don't do, others also will do" mentality.. that's the problem!!

      Delete
    5. That, I totall agree SK.

Like queueing properly. Sometimes feels like, why need to be so baik when every other person just simply masuk masuk abd cut queue. :(

  3. I read about this too and my initial reaction was why make a fuss. It goes with the territory and with 3m books, the issue is amplified even more. All the organizer has to do is to just clean up the place and put back the books. I think this is not only a Malaysian problem but could be a universal human habit of convenience.

Lest anyone think I was a contributor to the mess, actually, I haven't been there yet this time and have never done this in my previous visits.

    1. but i think it is not difficult at all to carry the books to the cashier, and then politely tell them these are the few books that they want, but these are the books that they do not want right??

      Delete
    2. It's easy to brush off such issue and just tell retailers/organisers/business owners to just clean up but the main thing I think that is highlighted is the fact that we couldn't care less.

Mess? Let others deal with it.

Such mess at a big book fair. We're depriving other visitors who come of easy access and ease to find books if we simply dump books everywhere!

Just because there are people who can clean up, doesn't mean we should no regard it our "duty" to be orderly.

Have manners. Be considerate. The world don't just revolve around us.

And if one doesn't experience the scenario first hand, it's better not to comment and judge. :(

      Delete
    3. I agree with you SK.

It's just as easy to bring the books we want to the cashier and equally easy to pass the books we don't want to the staff rather than let it strewn all over the place.

      Delete
    4. Just clean up the place doesnt work coz those books that have been left on the floor and toilet would have been damaged and some cannot be sold.

For those children books like pop up or with toys...those are very expensive books. every 10 of those books they can only afford to have on damaged book else they will rugi.

ya some may say the organiser so big even. Got money one la. Can afford it. some more got sport cars leh.

But then have to think also. Those books are so cheap already. where else can find RM8 books?

I have to agree with Lina. There are many staffs there. I went 4 times this year. There are at least 3-4 staffs managing 3-4 tables . So ones can always pass the books to the staffs instead of hiding and sort the books in toilet then throw in toilet.

Sk, i think some may find it difficult to carry those books to cashier coz many who goes there brings luggage bags and some buy a few boxes. Not simple less than 10 books. hence they tend to sort the books .

They should not have throw the books everywhere la. should give to the stafss who jaga the tables or put in the bin provided. Maybe should advise the organiser to put more bins.

      Delete
    5. These people who say that retailers can afford to clean up and all that... have you stop and think where the cost of cleaning up, loss over spoilt goods, stolen books, etc will end up to? To us, consumers. School time already learn it in commerce class! (And I'm from pure science class also know this)

There is no such thing as free meal in this world.

      Meow,
I saw there were plenty of staff ever helpful walking around monitoring and picking up books and putting them back but of course, with so many visitors doing it, they can't handle all the mess. Right?

We tend to treat service staff with such disregard, we never seem to put ourselves in their shoes. Yes, they are paid to do it. But that doesn't mean they are our slaves too.

Sometimes I wonder where is our manners. :(

  4. well no need to go so far away..
if you go to TESCO, JJ, Giant.. it is the same problem..
people just simply put the stuff if they decided not to buy....

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Exactly! People are entitled to change their mind about buying a book/product or probably wanted to size down their purchase at the end. It is a huge place after all and it's not practical to go back to the exact same spot to put back the book(s).

      Delete
    2. Perhaps next time, they should designate a corner specially for returned books.

    3. the worst part is that they even just put the cold stuff (eg..ice cream) at those non A/C area...

    5. in a supermarket or hypermarket, if i finally decided i do not want the items on hand, i always place them back to the rack i took them (of course i think there are 5% probability that i don't do that, haha!!).. i don't feel good to just leave them anywhere just for my convenience, especially frozen products..

but then, at least this is better than those that consumed to food and just throw the empty wrappers on the rack anywhere they like!! and they are not paying!! @_@"

      Delete
    6. I put things I don't want at the cashier counter if it's too inconvenient to travel back to the aisle.

This is especially so for perishable items.

When we simply dump things, we are creating extra jobs at the supermarkets. The jobs will cost overhead and it will eventually be passed to us consumers to bear the cost.

Also, it creates more need to hire foreign workers that we Malaysian simply abhor and complain. Why? Because we cannot do simple jobs ourselves! :(

      Delete
    7. ya me too will put things with the cashier if find it too far to go back to the same place.

anyway, there was bin to put the books that they does not want and there were staffs too manning the tables.

if the customers should change their mind, they can always put it into the bin. if the bin too far, they can just give it to any staffs nearby.

hould not be such ugly habit

      Delete
    8. True.

Sad to see that we really have bad habit.

And I also hate those who feel the need to pry open books that are sealed instead of asking staff's assitance to do it (OK this one is not BBW)

    1. I agree this is Malaysian's syndrome. Shame on us. I couldn't agree more with SK. We have to respect books. I always tell my girls books are like the buddha. We cannot tear it or throw it on the floor. If the book was torn, I must immediately mend it for them.

Book is knowledge, like what SK said, so we have to value the book, like we value our knowledge.

I believe wenn will show dislike, too, if her customers come to her shop and misplace the stuff all over her shop.

      Delete
    6. People do this because they have no respect of other.

Staff viewed as cheap labour means these people do not appreciate at all people who are working to earn an honest living, doing jobs that they do not want to do.

I always say this and will always say it again - we complain about too many foreigners working in our country yet it is because of us they have their jobs. We cannot clean up after eating at fast food places or food courts. We cannot use toilet without dirtying them LOT. We throw rubbish everywhere so that the road sweepers have jobs to do (what the hell?????) and such. :(

      Delete
    7. yeah, this is very typical malaysian and i guess perhaps asian attitude.. never act considerately and always bear that "even if i don't do that, others will also do that, so it doesn't matter at all" attitude..

And you've seen how messy we are when we go out makan at fast food places, right?

We simply don't want to be bothered or be hassled to do the right thing. Let other people do it. That's the attitude, unfortunately.

    1. I agree with Anay, sometimes the organizer has to be responsible too.

Just refering back to my comment above on the Mooncake festival celebration at Taiping Lake Garden. Knowing our Malaysian didn't take good care of environment, MPT should put more giant size dustbins every where.

When we wanted to go home and throw all the garbage, I had to walk a long distance to find a dustbin and throw my garbage. That's why many people just simply throw here and there.

    2. Put giant dustbin also, if people lazy and couldn't care less, no point also.

It need to start from ourselves. No matter how, learn to value other things around us.

Do not be selfish. Do not be self-centered.

    3. I have no problem at all carrying my own rubbish.

It is sad to see people throwing away rubbish when they go into forests or for a picnic. If we can bring our stuff earlier on, why is it so hard to carry the rubbish afterwards. :(

    4. they got put bin la...near the OCBC there. Maybe next time can suggest they put more bins everywhere la.

But then the table there also have staffs jaga ma. can always give the books to the staffs instead of chuck in the toilet

There was one incident in FB where the parents let the kids play jump into the pile of books likekids playing jump into the timbunan rumput.

maybe the organiser should be more heartless and kck those customer who are caught letting their kids jumping like that and those who simply leave the books in toilet

    5. I agree Meow!

Whoever caught misbehaving, eject them out. Of course those people will be making a hell lot of noise about the bad treatment they got and how the fair is no good, bla bla and conveninently forgetting to mention that they were the culprit first. ;p

  27. The way they displayed the books on boxes are like fish markets. So they can expect fish mongers buying books and throw them like dead fishes. If they have the same BBW fairs again for next few years and still faced some woes, who would you point fingers at?

    1. Point fingers at both parties.

Mess doesn't get created by itself. Someone or a horde of someones need to cause it too.

    2. Conclusion, if there is a mess, there is people who created it. Shame on us, please learn a little bit of Japanese's good behavior. Otherwise, every time I face the Japanese flower boy, I feel more shy.

  30. The after photos is at their storage area la where all the staffs kumpul those books that customers simply throw here and there.

The staffs then sort out the books according to categories before putting back on to the tables.

Even on preview day when i went, the books also become sort of messy already coz some customers took and when they doesnt want the books they will simply put on any tables.

well it is expected occurance la. every year although have been warned many times, people will still do it.

Just not logical lo...why not just take the book the see the summary. if want then decide there and then and masuk into own box or trolley la. why wanna sort at the end of the journey.

last year was pretty bad also. some customers just sat on the floor and sort the books blocking people who wanna pass. Then those they doesnt want they would just throw on the floor

many books rosak because of that. Ya maybe people say the company can afford the losses la. But then why do it? okay let say doesnt want to waaaaaaaaaaalk all the way back to the table. why not put it on a table nearby instead of leaving them on the floor and like what highlighted in the paper....left in the toilet. Books are fragile things leh.

On the floor people walk and didnt see and step on it become dirty liao

anyway, i think the organiser should also provide a few more bins all over the hall so that people can drop those books that they doesnt want into the bins instead of left them on the floor and toilet
