The (One Last Time) Japanese Buffet..

Oysters★★★★no taste at all, it's like slurpping bland wantan.. now i can tell you, it felt more disgusting to swallow tasteless oysters than fishy oysters!! though "fresh" from the kitchen, but i wonder how long it has been "fresh" in the kitchen??
Sashimi★★★★★first, the way the sashimi were cut was not professional that the texture was affected.. second, the tuna were tasteless and together with the abalone slices, i felt like eating some chewy flour, you know those vegetarian fish?? the only things that taste normal were the butterfish and octopus..
Tempura and Deep Fried★★★★the batter of the tempura prawn was thicker than the prawn itself, not breadcrumbed and soggy, more like homestyle prawn fritters than an authentic tempura.. the deep fried squid was so overcooked it felt like eating rubber.. only the deep fried chicken pieces and yam balls were normal..
Grills and Seafood★★★★★mostly overcooked and i was unlucky to picked a mushy grilled prawn while other colleagues found theirs okay.. the steam cod fish was not bad, just that i had turned cold while served.. the grilled mackerel was the best through out the night i personally think, just that it was not salted enough to taste..
Others★★★★★frankly, i was rather disappointed with the food and didn't feel like trying many others after taking a peep.. right away i went for the desserts which actually look more decent..
Desserts★★★★lots of choices like ice-creams, cakes, cookies, waffles, fruits, mochi, jelly, pudding, chocolate fondue etc.. i had three big scoops of ice-cream (salted caramel, yuzu and cream, chocolate banana) and found them super delicious, because they are from Haagen Dazs and not Gogoya, haha!! cakes were nice too, and i must say the only thing i enjoyed the whole night was probably the desserts, how pathetic~~ @.@"
Conclusion★★★★★paid RM108 for such a lousy so-called Japanese Buffet, i felt disappointed down, with the same amount of money there are so many other places where we can have satiably great food.. this will be the final time and i will not go back anymore!!

i went to have Japanese buffet with colleagues earlier this week at Gogoya in Moonhill Gallery, while feedbacks were heard that the standard has dropped drastically, we still gave it a shot because our first choice was fully booked that night.. at RM108 nett per person, what was supposed to be something we looked forward to turned awfully disappointing.. themed Japanese buffet but there were actually more non-Japanese food than Japanese food to choose from, worse was that food were not to our standard.. anyway, other than the food, it was still a pleasant dinner because the table service was prompt, all of us thought alike of the food and had great time criticising like we were gastronomes!! so that's it for an experience that failed the one last chance, hahaha.. if you would like to read into details my comments on the food, click the button below..

BTW just in case you wonder, i didn't (have the mood to) take any photo that night.. the photo above was actually a bento set i had in a randomly picked restaurant, stressed randomly picked and picked randomly, during my recent Bangkok trip, where i mentioned i had a lot of Japanese food and got many readers asking why Japanese and not Thai.. now relating to this post, i can tell you that is because we can easily find affordable, quality and nice Japanese food in Bangkok but not in KL!! i draw an end to this Gogoya Japanese buffet.. :p

    2. That was cheap as he paid a promo price. Most buffets at 5* Hotels in KL range from RM140 upwards!! I used to like that Gogoya @ MoonHill as they have the widest spread of buffet.

    4. i guess RM108 is considered more expensive than RM140 if the food are not nice at all.. the standard has dropped so much i will not go back anymore..

  3. Thanks for sharing again, SK. I will remember. I only tried the Japanese buffet, Showgun at Sunway Pyramid last year on Raya eve. It was about RM80++ per person. It was not as bad as you described here. But then, I was just like you, I love those dessert more.

By the way, we had so many rounds of ramen and sushi when we were in Tokyo last week. My family enjoyed the food in Japan so much. Those are authentic Japanese food. So fresh and so delicious.

    1. Instead of Japanese buffet, I prefer those ordering from menu kind of eat all you can package. My friends in Japan treated us to one Japanese steamboat eat-all-you-can type. Wow! It was so oishi. We could choose two type of soup and so many good dishes, including desserts from the menu.

    4. i think i tried Showgun once, before that went to Sakaiki more since it was the first Japanese buffet back then i guess.. but very sad, all these so-called Japanese buffet are not totally Japanese as only a few section are Japanese and the rest are just usual local food..

  4. Woiii Thambee dei. You so rich and orang atas to dine at such a fabulous restaurant at MoonHill. Those well heeled people only sashay into MoonHills.

I love Gogoya too! I always count its worth for the hefty price paid by counting the Haagen Daaz ice creams that I whollaped! I could easily down over 8 cups and that comes close to RM100 already. Yums!

    1. Gogoya used to be good and i remember booking has to be weeks ahead when they were newly opened, but sad to say they cannot maintain the quality and hence i have to say goodbye to this eatery..

  5. Ah...so this Gogoya pun already jatuh standard lah. I have heard of it but never got a chance to go there. There are two other Japanese buffets I used to go to. Saikaki and Sure-gone (hee..hee..dunno I murdered the name properly or not). I was impressed with Saikaki long ago and when Sure-gone opened at 1-U I was so excited. But seriously, the last few times I went there the food was so so only.

    1. I read your comments and I can relate to that. That's why I feel Japanese food not so suitable buffet style. Mass production bring the standard down. Just like when I took my auntie to Umai-liao. And that one worse, service was so slow.

      Delete
    2. At RM108.00, you better just focus on the Haagen Daz ice cream lah since it is a high value item and the taste is fantastic.

    3. From your review I won't waste my money at Gogoya. In fact I already give up on Japanese buffet.

    4. yeah, in fact i think you don't have to consider this Gogoya at all, hahaha.. and you are right, all these so called Japanese buffet, only just a few sections and the rest are actually local food.. but i only had 3 scoops of Haagen Dazs ice-cream, regret i didn't have more.. hahaha!!

A decent joint with good reviews will reduce its quality consistently instead of maintaining standard or get better.

    1. I agree with you Lina! So true. Somehow food chains here cannot maintain the good standard all the times. I wonder why.... Sigh~

  8. No wonder your title written one last time la! Means this will be the last time you visit Gogoya restaurant...

Actually I remember this Gogoya restaurant was so famous last time! I went there once about 3 years ago (I think so la, that time I wasn't even pregnant with Aden) and I was so excited! Cause I have heard so many positive reviews about their food! Like so many options and how yummy they are! Price wise, yea not cheap but since it's a Japanese food buffet, I was willing to pay la, try ma! Never try never know wert!

So during that time, I actually ate a lot, hehe. And the overall experience was great! Waiters/waitresses were prompt and friendly. Lots of food to choose from, nice environment too! I remember I ate a lot of Haagen Daaz ice cream!! Haha! Make every Ringgit counts ma! :p
Then ever since that time, I was so wanted to go back again but no chance... Even if I go KL, I seldom go to that area, mostly just PJ only. Plus, there are other restaurants which serve similar stuff.

So, coming back to your post. Actually you are not the first one who complain about this restaurant... I mean of recent case la. I have heard my friend mentioned before, probably within this year also. Really 退步 a lot and he also swear he won't go there again! Cause really waste money la! Not a satisfied one. Actually now also got other nice Japanese buffet restaurants to choose so I think this Gogoya will slowly sink to the bottom liao.

I agree with you on the point about Japanese food in Thailand, I realize there are quite a lot Japanese food restaurants in Thailand, I have been to Hatyai and Bangkok ones and seriously they are good! Also cheaper than what we have here.

So oysters are bad huh? Hmm me no comment cause I hardly take oyster.. Scare of the 'fishy' smell.
Sashimi also not my thing at all. I don't eat raw food.
Tempura and fried stuff, yea I like. But seems like what you mentioned really turn people off... What had happened to the kitchen huh actually? *scratch head*
Seafood, must be fresh so that it will taste good, else really make people 没胃口 one.
As for dessert, luckily still ok for you, at least something that can make us happy, haha! Like you said, it's HD brand so of course must taste good la right? Else, really need throw them rotten eggs liao, LOL!

Hmm have you thought about complaining to them? It's our right as consumer... But then since you said you won't be going back again, complain or not also makes no difference la hor? Hehehehe!

    1. yes, i remember when they were newly opened, booking has to be weeks ahead, and i actually was impressed with the variety as well as the quality of the food, and it was like RM90 that time and i thought it's worth paying.. but sadly to say, the standard dropped so much and now charging RM108 per head, it's the most "not worth" buffet all time, haha!! no point complaining to them lah, haha, i think if their business is getting less, they would know what happen :)

    2. Yea, it's like pay more to get less thing, who will do that?

  9. Wah SK Thambee turns into a fierce Gordon Ramsay-esque food critic! This is a very exciting post to read!

Actually I was alright with my experience at Gogoya last year (or was it last last year) although they have already been getting bad press. Maybe I have even lower standards when it comes to food. But I agree their tempura is f**ked up. You need to wait for those freshly fried ebi, snap them up and eat within minutes, if not... disaster.

Back to the topic of Japanese buffet, I cannot recall having gone to a so called Japanese buffet and really getting a proper Japanese buffet. Usually it is just the name but the food is still rojak. The only time I had real Japanese buffet was in the Fukushima hotel that I stayed in...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hahaha, i can really be one if i want.. anyway, really f**cked up and i guess maybe that was why there were actually ebi left there for people to pick.. yeah, i have not had a "real" all-Japanese buffet too, all rojak with local food only..

  10. Seems like only the desserts is nice, same like me la, my boss treat us to this hotel buffet, it seems so high class and nice but unfortunately the food are omg...cold is one thing the serving are not so good, they don't even serve like proper catering service (I used to be a catering server so I know which attitude is correctly la yah, so can criticize and specify a bit)

Food and service another thing, the silverware, the fork, spoon and the knife, the knife is like knife for putting butter one, not the knife for cutting meat one, obviously can tell it doesn't have the "gigi" at the end. The meat is a bit cold then now is difficult to cut.

Second also is the drink is serving very slow so then when we asked them, they said they just have one blinder...=.=!! Aiyo, so big restaurant only have one ya??

Last luckily the desserts are good, same like yours...only enjoy the deserts, the chocolate was nice but the ice cream....they do serve ice cream but I is not Haagen Dazs (sadly) is those normal one, don't know why it melt so fast, when the server pass it to me, I already can see the melting liquid, thought it supposed to be like solid one, right?? Sigh.....

    1. because the desserts were not prepared by Gogoya themselves kot?? hahahaha, so they bought in and they are actually better?? yeah, nothing was really nice but at least still got the desserts that i actually quite enjoy.. :p

    2. So is like you only makan desserts until full lo?

Like that....they need to improve more lo, how can a restaurant got attract customer is not using their food but the dessert, really not in good supervise lo. Just like some restaurant, the food are not nice, but the decorations attract the customers..

Me? I don't think so because I can just tell if the food is good or not and nothing in between but like you I will be more focused with desserts.. i will definitely give desserts higher marks compare to other courses

  15. When they first open in KL, I bought a book of coupons and went so many times. Now I have not been there for about 3 to 4 years now because the food taste has dropped so much. Now you also confirmed it has dropped.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh..thanks for the tips, I probably won't visit this Gogoya restaurant when I am in KL. It's definitely not worth it paying RM108 for food that's not meeting the expectations. Might as well eat in foodcourt serving Japanese food.

And, RM108 doesn't seems cheap. I know some restaurants charge around RM50++ for a buffet here in JB. And for this amount, you can get a nice bento at most restaurants. It's ok, don't visit this place anymore till they improved on their standards.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, if I were you, I also did the same by enjoying on the desserts since the food are so below expectations...hahaha... Of course, the first thing is to try the sushis and sashimis. The sashimis have to be fresh and thick to make it enjoyable. I just had a Christmas buffet in Renaissance JB and it was so good. The salmon sashimi was thick !

Aiyo..how come Japanese buffet feature non-Japanese food? That's crazy ... or probably a way to save costs or make the spread having more variety? I guess it really doesn't matter of how widedpread the variety of food is, as long as it is tasty and stick of the theme of the buffet.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well, I wouldn't take pics of the buffet too, not because of the food but it is simply too crowded. And, not to mentioned the food didn't meet expectations. Well, I guess the place is just being localised, just like your Thai bento set.

I have been to a Japanese ala-carte buffet and we can order as many plates as we like. It's all Japanese food in the menu and we ate the sushi most. So, you can imagine the plates of sushi on our tables..muahahhaa.. Btw, usually the sashimi and sushis will always needed topup as that's what everybody go for it. It's always the same in any buffet. Im not too sure which this restaurant since you mentioned it's tasteless and not professionally cut. eh.. could it be fresh? Can get infections if the sashimi are not fresh!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I wonder what are the non-Japanese food they offered there ? Could it be dim sums , kimchi, fried chicken, chinese vegetables , briyani and nasi lemak ? muahahahahah....

  20. Good afternoon SK.

Fuiyoh,..you and your friend went to Gogoya Japanese buffet ah..very amous buffet wor when comes to japanese buffet. Many of my friends went there and said nice.

Alamak...first night fully booked...then second booking baru can get....must have been looking forward to it already la and most probably since it's fully book so food must be nice also ...haiz looks like a case of expectation too high jor. Guess these types of buffet have changed and cater for local taste more than being truly japanese food la.

entah la...nowadays...for me la...not about japanese buffet but about hotel buffet. though price are high but the food standard just so so only. Even those that brag say serve international food. End up ...most selection are of local food like roti canai...satay.... adui...

Food not to your standard? meaning taste or the selection? If taste maybe those are the peak days so food not prepared by the Chef .. maybe food prepared by trainee chef? So the standard will be lower?

I suspect that many buffet are training ground for the would be chef. This is the place where the hotel or an establishment can risk a trainee chef prepare the food. after all ...one trainee prepare dessert one prepare meat...all of course under the guidance of the head che la. Head chef most likely reserved for big functions instead for for making food for buffet

A consolation la that the table service are good. No need wait till neck long for them to refill the plain water or to take away the dirty plates.

hahaha...looks like you all have a common "enemy" . Can crucify the establishment while ranting about the food there.

oyster- aiyak...no taste ah....lol...sure to be a few days kot? turned grey or not? like that you guys tarak lausai kira baik liao

sashimi- i have no idea what the heck is that. Anyway, if it depends on the way it is cut...i guess you guys might have just been made into white mice la. Must be cut by the assistant or junior chef or chef in training la. guess this sashimi is something similar to beef la...if salah cut then taste will be affected. it will feel tough instead of soft and succulent

Tempura and deep fried- hey this one is it serve to order or did they leave it at the plant at the main area(I have not been to GoGoYa so tarak tau how the place look like)..if it is out at the main area means most likely it have been there too long till soggy liao. Have had fried octopus at one of the japanese food chain...also left at the conveyer belt too long. Complain to the manager, he said it;s like that punya wor. Adui...

all these fried stuff cannot leave it long time else tak sedap liao lo.

ya octopus of fried too long will become rubbery. i hate that.

batter too thick? hahaha sounds like me cooking there geh...hmmm but then i tarak take second job at GoGoYa wor despite what the minister said. I have yet to master how to make the batter thin and crispy like ...haiz....

Grill and seafood- alamak... of so many prawns there you chosen the mushy one? Not fresh lo....wei...did you go out buy nombor ekor after that or not? hahaha I dont really like Cod fish. Didnt like the smell. Hmm...maybe they expect you all sendiri taruk salt and the sauces kot? after all some like it mild some like it more taste.

Others- guess by then tarak mood liao lo. looking forward to the buffet then suddenly the food so "car chicken" haiz.... sakit hati.

Dessert- well at least got one section get 5 stars la . consolations prize lo. Har kan dak not cheap leh and also the taste of that ice cream very nice. Then if got fresh fruits add on to it lagi best giler yummy

Conclusion _RM108 i can get a pretty decent chinese buffet for two person....with sharfin too...okay dont shoot me for eating sharkfin okay..it's included into the buffet punya leh.

Adui...i betul betul kena con la...or rather con by my own eyes and my speed reading. I thought that picture was the things in the buffet. presentation looks very nice. But how come say tak sedap...tu la...padan muka me see first paragraph only

  26. i don't fancy japanese food anymore after my visit to Tokyo.... malaysia has got more variety of food... walk in pasar malam and you get to eat ah pom, fruit juice, pan mee, sat keh ma, cempedak, nyonya kuih, cake, ... eat until you drop dead also won't cost RM108 i think....

  27. most of the time japanese food taste the same --> all made from soy sauce.... or wasabi ... or curry... that's all la...
