A Post-Birthday Rant
Doraemon cupcakes for birthday
係嘅, 噚日係小弟生日(之所以呢個博叫做[SK/0617]囉), 不過大家唔須要祝我belated happy birthday(親愛的, 記住係belated happy birthday唔係happy belated birthday, 我個birthday冇late到, 係你個祝賀late啫, 哈哈!!), 認真嘅..

okay, it WAS my birthday yesterday (hence this blog is named [SK/0617]), but you don't have to wish me a belated happy birthday (and please, it is belated happy birthday and NOT happy belated birthday my dear, my birthday never late, only your birthday wish, hehe!!) here, seriously.. if you have been following my blog, you know i used to be very high profile (and thick-face) to write a special post to "announce" publicly that it was my birthday that day, hahaha!! this year, i've decided not to do so, and in fact i have also change the setting on my Facelook to not show my birthday.. as a result of this, i have like only 20% birthday wishes compared to previous years.. that shows how little friends i truly have, muahahaha!!

it is so true that we are all now so used to be "reminded" of events and birthdays by notifications, after which we can just conveniently type something or even just click a button to automate birthday greetings to our friends, whether genuinely or just out of courtesy, and finally gain a "LIKE" by the birthday boy/girl - the whole process completes.. don't mistaken me for complaining here, at this age, i really will not care too much.. and don't feel bad you missed my birthday, i've missed many too, we all understand this is just the trend now.. anyway, i was thrilled by those who remembered my birthday, sent me birthday greetings or even bought me presents, i really appreciated that.. thank you so much people, i am still feeling touched, your thoughts and action really meant a lot.. :)

  1. Hello birthday boy! How could you lie low and be quiet on your birthday? You have become a Blog Celebrity since 2008! You are more famous than Caitlyn Jenner who just appeared last month. Muahahahaha

  2. A smart boy again as you are, I didn't pay attention to belated happy birthday and happy belated birthday. Your England is so damn powderful to spot this common error. The two meanings are really different.
It is more appropriate to wish someone whose mother had birth delivery complications and took some 72 hours to deliver her new born. That is when we should say ... Happy belated birthday...

  10. I'm like you too.. Previously I had this birthday setting in FB, but have disabled it many years ago.. I don't want people flooding my wall with wishes, some as short as HB.. Err, HB !! Puh-leese..And I don't want people feel obligated to wish me.. Same with me, when I see birthday notifications of my friends, macam guilty pulak never wish them..

    1. Ok ok, enuff about FB and all.. It's about SK, so let's talk about SK and the topic today.. When I was a kid, birthdays meant a lot to me.. Looking forward, even beg and pleaded my mum to host one for me.. Those days, parties would be in McD or KFC (McD most of the time), then invite friends over, they give presents, and we open on the spot.. Nice... Then there's a big cream cake, blow candles..

      Delete
    2. Then when I was 16, my mum catered birthday party at home.. Invite friends over,, Same thing.. Just that the food was not McD, haha.. Catered food like fried rice, bihun, sandwuches, fried stuffs, everyone loved it..

      Delete
    3. But now, after married with kids, errr, birthday is just going out for dinner.. No presents.. Only wishes from family and close friends.. Enuff already.. I hope when I'm older, my kids will celebrate birthday and Mother's Day with me :)

    4. Yep, I saw the Doraemon cupcakes in Meow's blog.. Very sweet of her.. So have you walloped all the cupcakes? I would usually order cupcakes with fresh cream, coz if fondant hor, it would be too sweet to eat.. Most people will just take out the fondant, and eat the cake, which is wasteful la.. But for decorative purposes, I agree fondant is nicer to use la..

      Delete
    5. That cupcake is from Meow. Indeed, very sweet of you. The doraemon cupcake is very lovely.

    6. Birthdays are so much more fun when we were younger, right? Can organize parties, then will receive lots of presents/ang paos from people around us. Then as we grow older, it's like not that exciting anymore, may be because we are more matured, and we want something else rather than just presents. For me for instance, me and my family health are more important, I want these as presents instead.

  11. Dear SK, I would not wish you "Belated Happy Birthday". I have sent you my greetings in advance. I like this post so much, as I finally know someone think alike me on this birthday greetings/reminders thingy. Muack!

Last year too, I turned off my birthday reminder. Just to see how many remember without any reminder.

Actually I dislike this type of reminder. In fact, I do not like to type my birthday greetings to someone because of that reminder too. I will purposely ignore those reminders.

I have this kind of thinking when I saw one of my friends who purposely set 1 of January as his birthday. He actually an old classmate of me. I know his birthday is in June. I saw so many people were reminded on 1 January and wished him on that day. I was laughing to myself. How could his birthday on 1 January? I still remember his horoscope is Cancer. See! How silly it is for those people to wish him on 1 January.

Since that day on wards, I told myself, only true friend who is really care about you would remember your birthday without reminder.

To me, no present is fine, a simple greetings through SMS would touch my heart.

    1. As for me, if every day is happy, every day is Valentine's day and my birthday. I just want my husband to buy me cake and my girls to sing me Happy Birthday song. But, my girls sure will make me cards. That's all for my birthday. This year was a bit different only. We celebrated in MTV Karaoke.

    2. SK, this year you no took leave to go feasting on birthday meals from dawn till dusk. The doraemon cupcake is so lovely. This must be your most favorite birthday gift from your blogger friends.

SK, you certainly do not need to set any reminder. Your loyal readers who visit your blog everyday will remember SK0617 for life. Kekekeke!

    3. A year older and a year wiser, this is certainly right. I can see SK is getting wiser and wiser. lol! To be honest, I enjoy my life so much now compare to when I was young. Now, I worry less, I hate less, I angry less, I laugh more, I enjoy more and I care more.

I know what is important to me and what I really want in my life now. I live everyday to its fullest. Therefore, I only pray for more wisdom, good health and happiness every year on my birthday. I wish you are blessed with good health, wisdom and happiness too, SK.

    4. When I was a kid, i got to blow candles on my birthday cake. That's all my parent were affordable to buy for me on my birthday. No present actually. For my girls now, I also would buy them birthday cake and take them out for special mean. That's it.

I have only two daughters. I have trained them to remember my birthday, their dad's birthday and their sibling's birthday. My girls will fork out their own pocket money to buy each other gift. I think this practice is good. I want them to learn to celebrate birthday for each other.

    5. Yannie sound so enlightened now and takes life happier with open mind & hearts. That is very good and she has become a wonderful mommy too for teaching the kids to remember all the birthdays which are happy occasions. Positive mind will bring abundance of goodness.

  12. I also turned off the my birthday notification on Facelook for similar reasons. I know most who wished me only did so because they were reminded by Facelook and they probably are not looking forward to hearing back from me, but if I do not "Like" their wish, then it seems rude. So better to just save everyone the hassle.

In fact, I also do not wish anyone Happy Birthday on Facelook, even if the reminder pops up. I never remember anyone's birthday anyway (heck, I don't even remember mine, so..), and I think there would be some who turned off notification as well, and then I would end up wishing some and missing out some. To be fair to all my friends, I just don't wish anyone at all.

    1. Those social media birthday reminder that make people obligate to write birthday greetings, and then the owner returns with a LIKE, actually meaningless. Those people who turn off the reminder is actually very wise. Kekeke! I started to be wiser last year. Not too late!

    1. Birthdays and funerals are both our dates of arrival and departures. I think it is a natural process of human's journey which worth to take note unless one is shy about it.
In Thailand, people send invitations out for birthdays and even funerals.

    2. My brothers pulak, haiyah, those two boys ah! Never remember hee..hee...but it is OK. This tai kah cheh don't mind it one bit. But I do remember their birthdays.

    3. It was different when I was a kid. Birthday was like so exciting because waiting to get birthday presents. I was not keen on birthday party because I was a quiet kid, very shy. Only had one birthday party and my grandparents invited the neighborhood kids.

      Delete
    4. Receiving genuine birthday wishes rather than those due to FB reminder is more meaningful. I mean, if someone knows when is your birthday and really cares about it, they will sure remember and send you wishes. I always feel that those prompted by FB reminders could be more of obligation. Of course not all because there are friends who genuinely care to wish you but somehow they honestly forgot.

      Delete
    5. But you know, there are some people who like to remind or hint to people their birthday. I used to know one person like that, always dropping hints and hoping to receive birthday cards and gifts. That one I feel is lebih-lebih.

      Delete
    6. Perhaps as we get older and older, birthdays will become meaningful again? I mean as we count the years - 50, 60, 70, 80 and wonder how many more? And those who love us will see it as a blessing that we are with them for another year and hope for many more to come. I would like to see my parents have many, many more birthdays to come.

    7. But having said what I have said about my attitude towards my own birthday, I think my 50th birthday will be a milestone lah. Officially can rubber stamp as auntie liao (of course lah now already auntie, but 50th is the perasmian) and I want my partner to take me for a nice celebration hee..hee...

      Delete
    8. Then 55th birthday lagi meaningful because I can queue up at the fast lane at the bank and at some restaurants can get 50% off buffet! Naik pangkat some more "Warga Emas". Chewah!

  17. Ok, since you don't want us to wish you belated birthday anymore, then I won't do it... :p
But I already wish you happy birthday yesterday at TM's blog, your best friend's blog, since he dedicated a post to wish you... Hope you see it.

Yes, I also feel weird why there's no post on 17th June on SK's blog, I remember you did it all this while.. True la, what's the point right? I mean it's your blog you can do whatever you want la, we all respect...

Oh so you turned off the notification on FB. I didn't turn them off, cause I love to see those wishes on my wall, wahaha xD But ho, some friends ar, very 'lazy' one, just type HB. I mean I know I appreciate the effort to come and wish me, and I know what it means, but since you are typing already why not just type it properly? Nowadays got spelling assistant on phones ma, once you type 'hap...' then the word happy will come out already, just click. Anyway, just saying la. At the end, it's the thoughts that counts la.

I was kinda surprise when I read your post. Anything bothering you? You seems kinda down in the way you write it or maybe I am just anyhow kay poh and anyhow guess.

Anyway, hope you have a great time yesterday!

  22. Yeah, I was wondering how come I didn't notice your birthday on Facebook after I read mamarazi's post. I remember I did wish you last year ...hahahha... Ok la, it's up to individual whether one likes to publish his/her birthday or other personal details on social network. Some folks love it when droves of friends wishing him or her non-stop on their birthday and I am one of them. hahaha.. Bo bian, I am a bit hao lian at times..hehehehe...

  23. So, how you celebrate your birthday ? It's a weekday, did you take leave ? I guess its ok to take a day off for birthdays , though my company gives us off-day as a token of appreciation. Even if there's no off-day, I will still take leave to celebrate with my family, where it could be a simple celebration.

Aiya.... unless there's a pressing issue, work can wait la but birthday is once a year, just pamper ourselves la.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Btw, most of the malls and cafes do gave special treats to birthday boys and girls. I had a complimentary cake from some cafes in JB. Even Giordano and some retailers gave discounts to birthday folks. Just show your ic and there you go, some special treatment for you.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah , I do agree with you that with all the social platforms and smart phones, its easier to remember birthdays. This also makes me wonder do we really care about other people's birthday since we are 'reminded' of their special day. Just a click or write Happy Birthday on FB will do. The other party will appreciate it but is it because people are doing it and you have to do it too?

Of course it's not easy to remember all your friends' birthdays but at least remember those that's close to you.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Having said that on the above, it may not be a bad thing to depends on gadgets and social platform to remember birthdays. Just take it as a diary or notifications as due to our hectic schedules , sometimes we may forget it due to certain reasons. That may saved some troubles especially for dating couples. Well, I am saying its an excuse to blame it on work but sometimes, it can served us well.

It's also doesn't mean depending on the gadgets shows that you don't have the 'heart'. To me, I always remember my loved ones birthdays and plan in advance to celebrate it. But sometimes there could some unforeseen circumstances that happened in work which takes your focus away.
