Bangkok: A 90/10 Leisure/Business Trip (2 of 3)
we did not plan to extend stay for that many days initially, but due the overlapping public holidays, airtickets were more expensive.. hence, we decided to stay longer in Thailand since two more nights of accommodation was a lot more economical and worthwhile than paying for the extra peak-season airfares.. having 8 days in total, we thought of an excursion to either Chiang Mai, Pattaya or Ayutthaya, but we ditched the idea and ended up taking it easy and relax just in Bangkok.. therefore, besides the meeting, we spend our time "exploring" around (with intermittent breaks back to hotel to unload and take rest) and meeting up with a few friends there..

  2. Wah, total 8 days in Bangkok, and just in Bangkok.. Well, ok la, as it’s a leisure trip, and very relaxing, can arrange the activities according to your time and convenience, back to the hotel for showers, naps and rest before heading out again, ok wor, very “tarn sai kai”..

    1. Yep, it’s a smart move to stay two more nights there, to avoid the “peak season” airfare.. Why pay more when you can relax for few more days in Bangkok? Things are cheap there, lots of things to see, eat, play.. Oooo I’m familiar with 2A – MBK.. I remembered we went for a boat ride, then after that, the cab driver can drop us to one place of our choice.. Some chose to go back to hotel.. So we chose to go MBK, can shop and walk ma.. I remembered eating a giant ice cream waffle and bird nest tong sui there, sedappppp…

  3. Good morning bloggers. Today SK will demo his shopping spree in Bangkok. I need to be updated on this as I have not stepped into any new shopping joints there for some years now. I remembered the last 2 trips were in a hurry to attend a wedding and a funeral. I must make a shopping trip soon.

    1. I am surprised that you guys stayed 8 days in Bangcock alone without going anywhere else!!! That was crazy and you must be smelling like Tom Yum Goong now! I bet there was so much excitement for you as this city is full of vibrant lifestyle entertainments that keep all the farang coming back over and over. Muahahahaha

Mai Pen Rai. Mai Pen Rai.

    2. 2a- I totally agree that the shopping malls and entertainment areas in this City of Angels are somehow lined up well along the stretch of Sukhumvit's which runs for miles. I would not say that it has something to do with the good planning of the city's planners but it just happened naturally if you are well versed with their old Thai history. Anyways, the folks curse their city planners instead for causing the massive traffic jams and floods! All their "Klongs" or canals are always overflooded with stagnant water anytime of the year. That's how the also got the name Venice of The East.

We should be thankful that our shopping malls are scattered all over the whole Klang Valley areas thus making shopping lesser fun but this actually helped to prevent traffic congestion like Bangkok. They have built BTS and Sky Train lines much later than us, yet they could not solve their jams! The school kids have to leave their homes about 4-5 am in the mornings to reach school on time. The poor parents have to let them eat breakfast inside their cars and nap till they reach the schools. very far away before the parents would wind their way to offices. Their lifestyle is terrible in this category and I often heard my cousins complaining to no end.

    3. I must go to this popular Terminal 21 which so many people have been bragging. I have no idea how fantastic they are but I fully trust my Thambee's words because Thambee is a fussy and perfectionist shopping aunty! Wakakakaka

Luckily you guys didn't visit Ayuthaya or Pataya. You might be disappointed since if you guys have visited Angkor Wat or Bali. That was how I felt when I visited Ayuthaya as their ruins were not that many compared to Angkor Wat's huge kingdom of ruins! Of course Chiengmai would be good and very interesting but it is like a 2 full day trips to travel to & fro. You might end up 3 days there with lesser time to discover Bangkok.

      Delete
    4. 2B - I am so jealous that you guys had the luxury time to visit and browse all the small shops in Pratunam area. I could only select one mall and one trip to Chatujak market only. It often had to tie up with meeting friends at the malls and walk around with me. I know I sound like a VIP but that's my problem for not allocating ample time for each visit.

      Delete
    5. 2C - This shrine is so famous in the world today! I think it is more well known in Hong Kong news than Malaysia after that Nicholas Tse's mother made a vow to fulfill if her wish was granted. In the end, her wish came true and she went to back to this shrine followed by hundreds of paparazzi and crowds. The shrine had to be covered and barricaded with cloths for her to dance nude around the shrine!!! I am sure many of you must be shocked to hear this. Anyways, I personally felt that the feng shui of this 4 faced Buddha is located in a very auspicious location that granted many wishes for the devotees! I always liked to watch the Thai dancers doing their traditional dances at the request of the devotees daily.

So what wish did Thambee make there? I am curious dei.

      Delete
    6. 2D - What a fun filled trip you guys had. You could even attend the Toy Expo! I had never seen one such expo in my life except Books Expo in Bangkok many years ago. I know Thambee is very young at heart and sleeps with many soft toys & mannequins on the bed! Wakakaka
What did you buy from the Toy Expo?? Honestly, I always asked the Thais to suggest the most suitable shopping centre if I have only one night's stay in Bangkok and they all would suggest Central World!!! I kinda like that place too for its size and location plus the stores that impress me and my pocket. Whenever the folks had the street protests, this poor mall had always been the favourite target in order to scare the tourists and shoppers away.

      Delete
    7. 2E - I think I have seen these photos in many Thai Facebooks. If I am not mistaken it is called Suan Phueng Resort in Ratchaburi which is located towards the West of Bangkok. Many tourists do not know this place and may not like replicas so much but it is very popular for Thais who like a short trip getaways, away from the stress and din of the city. In Winter the temperature there would drop til 5 Degrees C!!!

      Delete
    8. 2F - I am also ashamed to confess that I have seen and passed Baiyoke Hotel many times but yet to step inside to enjoy the panoramic sky view of Bangkok City. I think Baiyoke is the tallest hotel in Thailand with the best city view 360 degrees radius. I heard that hotel's lobby is like located on mid level and all the floors below are retail outlets for clothes and garment merchants doing wholesale business. That was the reason why I never checked into that place to sleep. Still, I am very keen to stay there at least once as the morning buffets at the top floors have received the most amazing reviews from all the guests!
Anyway, I was like you. I was taken by the Thai hosts to other hotels to chill and drink at the upper floors which have world class settings. I used to stay at Emporium Suites and the view was also fabulous enough to make me happy. I am just wondering how come this Westin Hotels always have good city views! Their Westin Shanghai also have the best views at night for drinkers.

    9. 2F - Oh yes, their mango seasons is around April to June and you will see so many stalls selling the sticky rice with mango laced with coconut milk. Oh so yummy and heavenly nice!

      Delete
    10. 2G - I knew you would definitely go for massage!! Who would miss this heavenly touch when they visit Thailand as their massage is quite different yet very cheap if compared to what we get in KL. I love the way they twist and unknot all our aching limbs. They don't do the typical Chinese or Malay styles that press, squeeze and bruise our bodies. I love the Thai massage. Once I stayed at the Petchaburi Road's hotel which was a mistake as it was so isolated but a cheap massage shop was just by the hotel's fence. It was a bonus and we had massage everyday for a week!! One day would be leg and the next day would be full body. Cheap Cheap!
How come Thambee's legs looked so silky smooth like Jim Thompson's Thai silk fabric?? You shaved all your bulu kah? Muahahahaha

      Delete
    11. 2H - I could not believe my eyes that Thambee bought so little for a week's stay in Bangcock!!! What happened to our shopping aunty? Hello? I guess you have the same thoughts with me as Thailand no longer have the cheapest and best clothes for male shoppers. We are at the uncle age category now and our taste have somewhat changed to plain and safe colour modes. I would normally window shop only and spent all my money to eat, eat, eat and just eat!!!!

      Delete
  4. Uncle, you forgot Bukit Bintang area when you mention KL malls are spread far apart? XD

As for the other malls, it is basically due to the nature of tenants demand. If you noticed, most of the anchor tenants in all the malls are the same: Uniqlo lah, Padini lah, etc.. If the developers build 5 malls in one area, those tenants will only rent lots at one of the malls (why have outlets in the same shopping area to kill off each other?), there will be oversupply of shops, then the place quickly becomes dead town.

Maybe Bangkok is different kot, got a lot more individual shops and boutiques to fill up a concentrated malls area?

If I go to Bkk, I don't think I will dare to go for massage. Rumor has it you will be in great pain if your body is not healthy, and I am not so confident of my body. :/

    Good morning SK and all

As I mentioned in earlier post, I have not been to BKK before but heard sooooo many people say good shopping there

last year read a travel blog by Diana Diane Teo. wah ....hers very details. Got mention the Terminal 21 leh. that time was morning la she went. also good review. there.

lovely model bridge there wor...each floor different ah. like that very unique

kakaka...must ask Kaldip bring me there jor

wei...you went looking at the washroom in every floor ah? hahaha otherwise how you know each floor different leh. *paiseh no eyes see*

Why tarak snap photo of the attendant too....sure many people did that leh. Gotta pay tips ka?

Hmmm dunno whether it is like KLCC ...got premium toilet have to pay rm2 to go in punya or not

    ReplyDelete
  6. Oppps.sorry sorry...tarak intro straight jump into commenting

Ya wor not worth it if wanna buy air tickets at high price due to holidays. Two nights accomodation is cheaper leh some more you said it was THB60 per night only right? Makan and minum there shouldn't be that mahal gua. Add together just need to tambah a bit more for the flight ticket kot.

That is what best about travelling with cincai punya friend. all last minute can agree to change without having a big fight over everything. Easy going leh.

Why suddenly ditch the idea to go to Chiang Mai , Pattaya or Ayutthaya? Coz of the holiday season too and transport price mahal? But there tarak celebrate 1st of May, right?

    Maybe too far kot?

    Best lah!

  10. So nice to have foot massage also after all that walking around, yeah? :)

  11. And look at that shopping stash! Rather a respectable stash. Hahaha

Did Fing Fing got anything? ;)

  12. Your Bangkok trip is so tempting. I suppose I need to see for myself the four faced god which is popular in Thailand.

  13. Many people said it's worth having massage in Thailand. I have yet to experience massage over there. It must be cheaper than over here.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes wenn, next time you go Bangkok must try their massage, either foot or body massage (or both xD), simply relaxing and most importantly, so much cheaper compared to Msia!

      Delete
  14. 2E, no pictures of you with cute pose in it, hehe...

    ReplyDelete
  15. So you and company decided, what the heck! Just stay put in Bangkok and explore instead of the hassle of going to Chiang Mai, Pattaya or Ayutthaya. I think it's a good idea lah. More relaxing that way. After all there is lots to see in Bangkok itself.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When I first looked at the top left photo, I though that was a real bridge with cars on it. But it turns out that it is a shopping mall and upon closer inspection, yah lah! I kena tipu!

      Delete
    2. So it looks like our mega malls are not as big as those in Bangkok, huh? Honestly, I haven't even explored most of our malls here like Pavillion or the many other malls around here. To me, you see one, you see them all.

      Delete
    3. If the malls are centralized and conveniently connected to each other, then it makes it a lot easier for us shopper to merayau and merayap all over the place. Can just walk or take the public transport, which I presume is a lot more efficient than what we have here.

      Delete
    4. This mall, Terminal 21 sounds interesting. Each floor with a different city theme is very unique. I wonder how many floors are there and what cities are represented.

      Delete
    5. Oh, and the uniforms of the washroom attendants match the national costumes of the city represented on that floor? Wow!

      Delete
    6. I guess people who love shopping would have a grand time here mall hopping. But not me. I prefer to go sightseeing instead.

      Delete
  16. You know, I think I prefer to visit these small shops and stalls rather than the big shopping complexes. The only unpleasant thing would be the heat, unlike in the mall where it is air-conditioned.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I understand that clothing can be dirt cheap over there. I know of a boutique owner who goes to Thailand to borong all the lovely silk blouses and sell at triple or 4 times the price. Even after doing clearance sales at 70%, the boutique can still make money.

      Delete
    2. The Chatuchak Weekend market must be very interesting. Did you visit? I would be interested in the food stuff. You know lah, this auntie loves to eat!

      Delete
    3. So it is advisable to bring extra luggage to put all the goodies that one is bound to buy home from Bangkok.

  17. It is interesting that the Erawan Shrine is situated in the Siam shopping area. Convenient I guess for the devotees to visit. After praying then can go shopping.

    1. Yes, it looks very packed! I wonder is it always like this or it so happened that it was a special occasion when you visited. I usually do not like crowded places.

    2. I have hear of this four-faced God. If I am not wrong, this God is very powerful and can grant wishes. I hope that your wish comes true.

      Delete
    3. I find it quite amusing that even if you are in the "dark" business, this God will also grant you an audience but you must go anti-clockwise. It makes sense, right? The righteous go in one direction and the not-so righteous go the other way.

      Delete
  18. Oh my! I remember in Japan you bumped into the Doraemon event and here in Bangkok you bumped into the Thailand Toy Expo. I think the Gods know that you like cartoons and fated you to bump into this sort of events.

    1. So what sort of toys were exhibited? Must be quite many. Got Doraemon or not?

    2. I do not recognise that cartoon character on the fan. If fact I have lost touch with cartoons! You are still young or young at heart and still love cartoons, no?

    3. This reminds me of the revolving restaurant I went to in Penang. I used to wonder how ah can a restaurant on a building revolve? Won't we feel giddy? I was so naive. I found out that it revolves very slowly and you won't notice it at all until you look out the window many minutes later.

    2. I came back to take a closer look at the clothes you bought (kay poh mode full on). From the 3 photos, the stack of clothes look like different sets. Are they? Are they all yours or was Fing Fing being naughty and hugged your friends' new clothes too?

      Delete
    3. Assuming those are all yours (which you said "few pieces of clothes"), I counted something like 22 pieces? You call the few? hee..hee...

      Delete
    4. Are those just tops or some are actually pants? I am visualizing that yeah, you have three stacks of new clothes and therefore they will need an extra bag . So you actually brought an extra bag along in anticipation?

  23. Going there with one suitcase and coming back with two already means kuat shopping lah! I heard about the toilet decorated to be like different city on every floor so now whenever my friends go to Bangkok, I will ask them, did you go to the place where the toilet on each floor is like different city. They must be so annoyed with me for asking them this every time, hahaha!

Thanks for the info on clockwise and anti clockwise. I did not know about this before but it is ok because you won't catch me going there to pray.

  24. Nice to hear that you have a great shopping experience in Bangkok. Well, the malls in KL are really all over the places. You have to drive dunno how many KMs to reach another mall and so on. Maybe I am used to the life in SG , everything is so centralised here and it's so convenient to shop. And, there's almost one mall near the MRT. Well, I supposed I don't have to mention Orchard Road.
The bridge looks real good in the top left. It looks like the London bridge....muahaha.. The malls in the pic were really nice!! Kudos to Bangkok!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes, let's not forget the smaller but economical and historical places, other than the malls. These are the places where you can get the authentic stuffs or bargained stuffs, compared to malls where it sold the same stuffs everywhere.

Pratunam area... looks like our Petaling St but I am sure no Banglas there selling...muahahha... So, did you got any clothes?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I heard of this Erawan shrine before but I dunno it hosted the four-face buddha. I am sure it must be a huge statue. There was also a big one in SG, at Bugis Street. Coming back to Erawan, this must be a world famous worship place as it is quite well-known.

I am sure it is crowded since there are so many tourists and devotees there. Once I went to Phuket's Chawan temple and it was very crowded too!! Some of the tourists objectives to Thailand are to worship the Buddhas there, especially those from HK and SEA.

  29. So, did you went into the Toys expo ? Yes, it always great to bump into these events whenever you are outstation. Don't mentioned outstation, I also felt excited when I bump into exciting expos in MY or SG, like the Doraemon expo in JB last year.

Oh ... any Doraemons there ? You seems holding a Mario bros. Ah...37 celsius ? How come ? No air-cond inside the hall or too crowded? Did you go in to the exhibition?

  30. I would wish if I can bump into those Japanese Kamen Riders or Ultraman exhibitions in Japan or HK... It's something I would love to see which is difficult to find here, even in SG.

Some other exhibitions I would like to see would be ...of course, Marvel comics toys with the Avengers in full scale size. And not forgetting the terminator, Predator, Aliens ....etc.

Oh..boys are boys... don't you agreed? muahahha....

I heard it's a beautiful place from my daughter's gorgeous kindy teacher where she able to make the trip, but it was very hot there. The sceneries were great and if I am not wrong, it is near to Hua Hin, another tourist spot.

However, you will be surprise there is no chocolate factory or chocolates for sale there. That's what I heard from the gorgeous teacher . It's just a place to take photos and that's all. But , its worth exploring this place.

I might go there this year.

How come this Chris must specially elaborate "my daughter's gorgeous kindy teacher".....!!!!!!????? This is not the first time I heard this statement. Can you post her pix in your blog, Chris?

  35. Oh yeah ...massage is a must in Thailand, regardless you walk a lot or not. They have so many skillful masseurs there and it's so cheap compared to the rates back home, like those Odyssey Spa, which was so expensive.

So, you only do leg reflexology ? Never do full body massage? if its me, I will do a two hour body massage follow by a foot reflexology ...wah... so shiok. One of my colleagues nearly had massage daily when he was in Bangkok ...as a Singaporean, he said it's very cheap!!

    1. Those masseurs usually will sit/stand outside the shop and call for business, cause there are too many competitions there, so must do something to attract customers, but from what I see, usually most massage shops are full one.. Cause too many tourists already~~

      Delete
    2. As a Malaysian, I also found their massage services very good and very cheap. For Singaporeans with higher spending power would definitely find everything very dirt cheap there. They probably could have 2 massage services daily like morning and nightly sessions. Chris should make a visit with your male buddies for Bachelor Parties in Bangkok. You can hang out nightly at the famed areas like Soi Cowboy and Soi Nana. Oooooo-La-La! You will not wanna go home after that.

    3. TM - Don't want... very dangerous..muaahahaha...
Yeah, I agreed with you it's very cheap over there and that is why one of my colleagues did almost every day!

Here massage also not cheap, though they say is Thai massage, but due to currency, not so worth la I think.

    3. Singaporeans earn a lot and the cost of living is very high in the republic. Naturally the masseurs and the parlour owners have to charge higher to survive. I wonder what is cheap in Singapore??

      Delete
    4. The SG ones always ask you to buy pacakage and super crowded. In addition, the masseurs are mostly Malaysians. Might as well massage in Malaysia to save some $$.

  37. I also remember when I went on a cruise to Phuket, they have a tour for massage only. Wow... I was wondering what the hell are they doing for half a day on just massage!! Of course, no hanky panky (but not too sure too)... but that tells Thailand is the place to go for a nice massage!

I usually had Thai massage in JB and that cost me RM140 for 60 mins... It's so much cheaper in Bangkok and I am sure the masseurs are more skillful!

    1. So shiok lah your cruise took you to massage! My cruise took me to see nonsense factories and just 2 hours shopping free & easy. I have learnt a lesson to take a cab direct to Phuket town in future for my own activities.

Oh My Buddha! chris paid so much for the Thai massage in JB. Either you had a happy ending or you looked like Li Ka Shing to them without glasses on. For RM140, you could enjoy 7 sessions in Bangkok!

Powerbank? eh... surprise ... why buy powerbank ah? Is it very cheap ? I thought Xioami is cheaper or you need it to juice up your phone since you got no time to charge it ? Yes, I always brought my Xiaomi powerbank whenever I go. It's very handy to provide juices to our phones.

Yeah,,you should buy more stuffs since Bangkok is a shopping haven. Never mind, there's alway next time!!

    2. Everything is cheaper in Thailand from cars to houses and food to entertainments. It has been a haven for retired expatriates who have built homes in the sanctuaries of Phuket and Chiengmai areas. Those who never married could find lovely wives there who would treat them like idols. Those who needed to release steams could find lovely services from the good looking catalogs too. They also have the most number of temples in the world in case you need to offer prayers there. That is the Land Of Smiles!

      Delete
    3. Not sure if the gadgets are original or not, though cheap. I know there's even Xiaomi imitation gadgets. The stuffs they sold are already cheap compared to other brands but there are imitations too. I don't think it's a good idea to buy imitation stuffs especially gadgets.

Oh, so ngam ho, got overlapping holidays during your visit, can't help it, air tickets sure expensive during this time...
Good also la that you guys got think to extend the stay, actually it's a good
excuse to extend and play, keke...
8 days are quite long actually, but a bit wasted if just stay in Bangkok, I mean
no doudt Bangkok is a nice and fun place to explore but 8 days wo, macam too
long already, plus you have been there before right? Might as well take the chance
and go to nearby cities, if for me I will do the same too!
Chiang Mai or Pattaya I heard before, but not Ayutthaya... But anyway, I bet all
these 3 places must be fun also since it's Thailand! I always love Thailand!
Their food is yummy and things are cheap! Truly a nice place for shopping, makan and relax!

    1. Yep, those big malls in Bangkok are quite centralised. And most importantly, convenient
to get to! Either by train or taxi also very convenient. Some even within walkiing
distance, if you can walk la! Like last time I went, me and my gal friend stayed at
a hotel about 10-15 minutes from the BTS station, we wanna save money so we walked
a lot! To and fro like that, wah damn exhausting man! But we don't mind la, since
we both take it as part of exercise to burn fats, so that we can eat all we want
      without feeling guilty, LOL!
Terminal 21 is quite new and advance, got free wifi to access~ And each floor different
themes, nice right? Even the bathroom also got themes, hehe~
MBK I find it so so only, gives me a feeling like our Sg Wang.
Siam Paragon pula very classy, macam our Starhill, cannot afford to buy anything there,
I mean for me la, haha! Just window shopping ok la!

What I like is still the Platinum mall and the Pratunam market, we spent most of the days
wandering there. And not forgetting Chatuchak market la, a must go if visit Bangkok!

    2. These days the air fare from KL to Bangkok is no longer expensive anymore due to the slashed prices from MASS. We can easily get it for under RM400 return from MASS or other supporting airlines making AA squirm to loose its popularity now. Book now and plan for Winter in BKK.

Chocolate Ville, I heard before, but due to time constraints it wasn't in my itinerary.
Hopefully, next time I get to visit this place. Looks so beautiful from your photos, lots of backgrounds to take photos.

Baiyoke Sky, the view from top there is simply amazing! And it's so windy up there~
My gal friend and I had our birthday celebration at the top floor during our last trip,

Oh your shopping loots! Like this called nothing much?? Haha!
Quite a lot I see from the photos! I guess clothes, bags and shoes are something most people will buy when they go Bangkok, there are just so many choices there and most importantly is they are cheap! Of course cannot complain much about the quality la, since they are kinda cheap... 一分钱 一分货 ma! For me, worth buying lo if can wear

    2. I think this Bukit Tinggi resort is quite old and outdated now with just thematic buildings and nothing more. This one in Thailand is a hilly resort that really looks like European countries with farms, small cottages, murals and roaming sheeps!! Anyone could be easily fooled by the photos taken by the tourists there. best of all, the winter gets really cold there and the guys would all wear wooly thick coats and jackets to say they went to Holland.

Hey, there is a season for mangoes in Thailand and not 365 days as you claimed. Usually every house would try to grow one or two mango trees. They will wait for after winter when the mango trees start to flower and bear fruits around April to June. The whole country would smell mangoes and it is a tradition that people give the very best and top quality mangoes to temples, relatives and friends. This is so unheard of in Malaysia. I never received any free mangoes from neighbours or friends. Maybe if I am lucky, I could curi a few from other houses! Wakakakaka
