Hello (I Actually Like Watching) Cooking Show
Cooking Show - HKTVB Good Cheap Eats Season 3

first of all, let me clarify this guy in the photo is not me and the lady beside is not my mum, haha.. they are the hosts of a cooking show called "Good Cheap Eats 3" (食平3D) aired on Hong Kong TVB which i am following.. okay okay, i confess i am also following the epic drama series "The Empress of China" (武則天) like a drama-fanatic auntie, but i am not going to blog about that since many would have already done so.. instead, i find myself enjoying this cooking show more..

and you must be very surprise huh?? why a man who doesn't (and can't) cook or bake but only eats like me, yet likes to watch cooking shows?? haha.. don't judge me by my look, but i really enjoy watching raw ingredients being transformed into dishes and then nicely presented to the tables.. it's magic, don't you agree?? cooking is in fact an art to me, that is why i only hands-on on simple stuffs but not those that require skills and experience and expertise, i just do not want to "harass" culinary art!! muahahaha, a good reason to tell others that you do not want to cook!! just kidding, imagine how could i cook if i can't even differentiate the basic types of veggie and meat and fish and herbs and spices?? that is also why i always salute people who can cook.. if you really ask me to "cook"?? can also lah, simple ones like these that requires no cooking at all lor.. hehehe!! :p

▶ why i enjoy watching this cooking show??

  2. Oh yes, I watch this too in Astro.. Maria cooks simple and fast food and it looks really delicious.. Her soups doesn't have any salt one, coz she puts a lot of liew inside..

Sometimes it's really funny la watching them both together in the show.. The guy (I dunno wats his name but definitely he's not her son although he calls her mom) quite soha soha (gila gila) one, and always kena tegur from Maria, hehe..

The last episode that I watched last week, he was cutting the spring onions using a scrapper or something like that, a bit silly lor.. Haha.. But then you guys need to watch both of them in action to see their funny chemistry..

  9. Good afternoon bloggers. I am sitting here alone at San Francisco coffee. My client asked me to wait for 2.5 hours so I have to use my phone to spam this blog post.

Today Thambee is talking about his TV addiction which is an aunty's program!!
I have not watched it yet but suspect the aunty rants like SK's style knowing that SK is not a kitchen chef but glutton.

  16. I feel that anyone can cook, if they make the effort and have an interest. Same with baking too. Previously, I was never interested in baking. Every time baking show come on TV, I switch channels, believe it or not? Somehow one day when I was going through depression, God gave me the answer in the form of baking. And that's how I started. I baked my first brownies and never looked back.

    1. Yes I believe that everyone can fly and everyone can cook too. So long as humans could eat meals, I am sure they could cook even the simplest or lazy man's dishes. Muahahahaha

Oh Wow! God gave you answers in the form of baking! What a miraculous story shared. I hope God could give me the hands of the Chef to fry my wok. I am always impressed with all your cookings and bakings because your photos always looked good & alive with very nice honest write ups!

    3. Yes, everyone can cook. Just a matter of whether it's delicious or otherwise. Once my girl followed my style of cooking and it came out differently.

      Delete
  17. I am sure you can cook. Perhaps it is a matter of time constraint that you did not pursue this skill further. Just like my younger brother. He used to cook when he was studying overseas and he even baked cookies and cakes for my mum long, long ago. But now, his kitchen never "berasap". Too busy with work and he finds it troublesome.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I have seen SK's earlier posts where he really could cook wonders! The only problem is that he need not cook as his father is the Master Chef of the house! How I wished that my father could cook something too! He never cooked and never made me even a drink in his life. Ha ha ha

      Delete
    2. I guess everybody can cook if he/she willing to put the heart into it. It's also interest la.. I got colleagues who can cook very nice and presentable food but they still stick to their full time job. They are actually good enough to become cook...haahaha...

      Delete
    3. well, true enough.. when i was studying overseas many many years ago, no choice but have to cook myself else it will be too expensive to eat out.. but now, aiyoh, go out tapao is even more convenient lah~~ :D

  18. Some cooking shows are interesting because the host is very engaging and entertaining. I have watched some local shows where the chef was so stiff and boring. To do a TV cooking show, the chef's or presenter's personality is rather crucial to capture the audience attention.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree that some cooking shows are interesting and it's the host that make the shows & demo good. Nothing to do with the dishes or woks they used. I dream that some day PH and RealGunners could host a blogger's cooking demo. I am sure you both will entertain us well just like your blogs.

      Delete
    2. very true, i think the host actually is very important as he/she is the soul of the whole show.. that is why i find these two hosts who are bubbly actually make the show so lively and watchable :)

  19. First of all, my home signs up Astro Njoy only. Therefore no Astro On Demand and no Astro Wah Lai Toi . Only has Astro AEC nia!
JAMY has no time to watch Astro as well. Our time has been fully occupied with work/school and exercise le!

    1. Anyway, when JAMY went to granny’s house for dinner every evening, JAMY got to watch a little bit of Astro OD and Astro WLT. Regarding the cooking show that you mentioned here, we watched before. I still remember the episode that I watched was about making toast for breakie. I saw them going to market together, then coming back preparing the food. Very interesting show, I reckon.

    2. About the points that you enjoy watching the cooking show.
      1. The interaction between the hosts are very lively and natural.
      2. The lady chef possesses her own style and characteristic in the show making her appear so confident and outstanding.
      3. I agree that simple recipes can produce the best dishes. Yannie too always looking for simple recipes. Heheheh!
      4. Simple cooking steps and low cost ingredients are the most appreciated by most people. Eating out is expensive now. Everyone would love to know simple recipes and reasonable prices.
      5. The idea that delivered in the show is special that it can attract majority audiences. Thumbs up to the show instructor.
      6. I still remember how to make use of the edges of the toast after watching the only episode. They soak the edges of the toast in egg and sugar, and they fry it until crispy They have turned the left over into a snack. The tips are so useful.

      Delete
    3. Yannie you are so wise not to simply sign up the astro packages since JAMY are all busy with other more important chores at home. My wife wanted to sign up the full package of all the 4 Korean channels for me! I screamed NO as I don't want to be glued to the TV screen. My top priority is to watch at least the News from any of the 4-5 channels available. I also do not have the WLT package but I do watch see some hilarious cooking channels over Astro. They also showed the recent Korean Cooking Championship where North Koreans participated. It was a shocking show as they used the ovary of a cow to boil soup and it contained a still born calf. OMG!!! Sick fellas.

      Delete
    4. My dad also signs up for NJoy but he only subscribed to shows from mainland china. There are shows on cooking but mostly its in mandarin and some food doesn't quite appealing to us. For example, I am not too appeal to food in Northern China. I still prefer those HK or Guangzhou food.

      Delete
    5. It's always great to have entertaining and humorous hosts besides the great food that they dished out. Maria is n experience entertainer and I watched one of her cooking shows before, not sure if its this one. I am not sure of the other host, never seen him before as I seldom check out HK TVB shows now.

      Delete
    6. Anay, April and May coming back from school, have to do homework, then I need to rush them to tuition and other activities such pingpong training and art. Yannie an Jin Jin will then hit gym or pool. This is our routine already.

On weekends, when Yannie ironing clothes then Yannie will switch on the TV for a while. The girls so far no complain. I don't like them following those dramas.

On certain days, when the granny taking care of them, they will watch the TVB dramas at their home. I also reprimand them not to watch so many, I scare they will get addicted to TV dramas.

      Delete
    7. Yannie and Jin Jin will take the girls for movies instead during leisure time. Yannie actually loves watching TVB dramas and any kind of dramas, but Yannie now prefer staying fit and healthy more.

      Delete
    8. i watch this online from a website which has lots of dramas and series from HK, CN and TW.. not watching on ASS-LO lah, this company monopolies the market and charging premium subscriptions yet slots in so many commercials between programs!! i always think if we pay, then we don't have to watch (that many) commercials!!

indeed true enough, the chef and the host play important role in a cooking show.. they have to make things more lively, else a boring one even with marvellous recipe will not be liked by many..

  21. wah... such a change from your usual blogging topics on travelogue or current issues. Now, you talk about cooking shows! That's refreshing indeed. But before that you also talk about boobs ...opps.. I mean the Empress. I haven't watch this serial yet though of course, it is very popular and also never short of controversy when China decided to trim down the flesh a bit... Anyway, I don't think I got time for serials nowadays. Even, those that I like to watch like Shield also no time. hahaha ...

Yes ... yes.. like you I also fancy cooking and food shows. Sometimes, when I was having my snacks, I just tuned in to the cooking shows on the cable tv. I like all kinds of cooking shows, be it local, chinese or angmoh. Anyway, I sort of admirer the angmoh ones... they cooked with some certain styles and it seems effortless for them to dish out something.

  22. As I mentioned before , I don't really have much time for TV and thus, definitely I didn't watch this show. The two hosts seems very bubbly and it must be a very enjoyable show, especially Hong Kong hosts who were never short of humours. In cantonese, they are just nice for us folks who mainly speak cantonese.

Not sure if see wrongly but the lady looks like Maria... the veteran Hong Kong entertainer. I watched one of her cooking shows before but not sure if it's this one. She cooked and dished out some nice dishes , of course, teaching the audience on how to cook it and as usual, with a recipe.

  23. I like the way you say cooking is an art. Yes, its indeed an art and not everybody can cook well, even if you are a woman who are 'supposed' to cook for the family...muahahaha... There are guys who can cooked much better but they lacked something... they will leave the stuffs to their wives or moms to wash. hahha... I call it an art cos regardless of males or females, it depends on the individual interest in culinary. Some folks just loves cooking like some of your regular readers here and they keep experimenting until they succeed. Its just like playing a sports or doing some other art work. They do until they succeed based on their passion.

    ReplyDelete

    1. cooking is indeed an art right?? it would be more fun to be spontaneous and improvise with what you have, rather than to follow exactly the measurement and all the figures on recipe, agree?? being in the kitchen should be fun instead of feeling stressed.. :)

    2. Cooking is indeed an art. We feel free to improvise as long as it's edible.

  24. I especially love those presenters who are really cooks (unlike some hosts to try to pretend they know how to cook) and shown on TV on how they dished out presentable meals effortlessly. The chinese cooks seems more serious when they cooked and usually look very discipline. This is especially so when they are on TV just for a show and they doesn't want to shame themselves.

Then, there are those chinese cooks like Cook with Yan, who also serious though can crack jokes while cooking. Compared to angmoh cooks, they are more relax and also seems very pro. I like those French or Italian cooks who can really cook a nice great and presentable dish which really makes you wanted to go for some western food immediately.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh yeah.. i think the presenter is the most important soul of a show.. must be able to control and make the show lively.. else, no matter how interesting the topic or the show is, the boring presentation will make everyone feel asleep~~ :p

  25. Oh... this also brings me to those cooking reality shows like MasterChef or Top Chef. I like the drama when they anxiously fighting against the time to prepare the dishes for a banquet. Of course, not forgetting the way they cook the dishes in order to qualify for the next round.

Then, there was Masterchef junior when kids as young as 6 can cook so well, which really puts us to shame! That was one kiddy show which my kids love and inspired them to help out in the kitchen!!

    1. oh, i love watching MasterChef too.. i am very impressed with the contestants, and especially the kids in the MasterChef Junior.. unbelievable they can really cook good stuffs!!!

  26. Well, there's no surprise for someone who can't cook but love watching cooking shows. We also can't drive F1 or fast cars that well but we love F&F movies...hahaha... Or climbing Mount everest and so on. I guess it's all for entertainment. Cooking shows can be very relaxing as eating is relaxing and as you said, cooking is an art. So, we are actually witnessing an art to be developed. hahaha... sounds very profound huh ?

I also can't cook but I do enjoyed cooking shows, especially with entertaining hosts. Yes, its nice to see those raw and fresh ingredients work out to become a delicious dish. And, not forgetting the chopping of the onions, vegetables, minch meat and etc.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah, i so agree with you.. the love for watching cooking shows does not mean the love for cooking in the kitchen right?? but sometimes, i guess there will be a slight chance that you may wanna try out some recipes you have watched, right?? especially those very simple ones that i think i can cook to impress, hahaha!!

      Delete
  27. So, did you try to cook after watching the show? muahahaha ...

These shows can be appealing to housewives who like to do some simple dishes for the family. However, although it sounds simple, its actually not that simple at all. I remember once my mom tried to learn and thought its simple but miss out on certain factors like timing especially. She probably fried the meat slightly longer and it didn't turns out well. In the end, practise will perfect the skills. Anyway, I remember she did learnt some concepts, like fried the meat first, then prepare the gravy and in the end, pour the gravy onto the meat, instead of doing them together.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh yeah, definitely will try if the dish is very simple and i think i can do it.. sometimes must also impress others right?? hehehe.. but come to think of it, it's easy to do but difficult to master also.. :)

  28. One food show that I like locally is that Ah Xian show or Jason. I can't remember the name but it was shown on NTV7 and later it came to SG cable TV. I like the way he search for food around Malaysia and even those ulu places in Ipoh. As a Ipohrean, I also dunno got such stalls! Anyway, this is not a cooking show but sort of cari makan though they got show how the cooks prepare the dishes.

  29. Oh... I should mentioned Japanese food shows here. I remember I watched a show of a lifetime ... muhahahahaha... the chef actually teaches us how to eat sushi! It was so enlightening! There's some ways in eating maki and sushi. For maki, we just need to dip a bit of sauce with sashimi and put all in the mouth. For sushi, we have to turn the sushi sideways (provided the sushi is of good quality where the rice won't fall off) and dip it in the sauce and eat it. After eating, put a slice of ginger in your mouth.

This short show was so informative!! I guess it's great to understand all sorts of food in the world , besides chinese food.

    1. yeah.. i think there is always a story with every food that we eat.. and definitely sushi being the "national food" of Japan, it has an interesting story behind.. :)

  30. SO, I believe you are watching on Astro channel. I don't have astro in JB as I subscribe to UNIFI as well as in Singapore, there are not so many canto channels, only the TVBJ which is kinda boring.

Usually, I have to tune it to those cooking channels which features a mixed of Asians and the world's delicacies. And, whenever I watched it at night, they will never failed to tease my tastebud and I will get hungry easily!! Those that feature seafood like Giant crabs, lobsters and etc will make me drool!! So, even watching cooking shows, make sure you watched it with a full stomach ...muahahaha...else you will find yourself checking out those food the next day!!

    1. some of the show really pakai hentam. Go to the place seems expensive and food so so only but claim to be best this best that.

Or maybe am just too kedekut la.

    2. hehe, cooking shows are nice and shows about food are nice to watch too.. but those Ho Chiak things, i am not so convinced la, probably the first few episodes to gain popularity, the recommendations are genuine.. but later as it gets popular, i would think what are introduced are actually paid for.. like advertising only..

    3. You are absolutely CORRECT!!! Those HoChiak ones macam BO HoChiak in most cases! Even ChuiLing's face could not convince me.
I trust myself, my wife and SK's taste so far. Not even my siblings who all own crocodile tongues.

  35. You can not cook meh...you humble only la. See the Burger and overnight oat you already make so creative lo. If you use a bit more brain juice surely you can cook like a Master Chef la.

Or maybe like RG. Pakai hentam put everything in as Lazy Man Cooks. Hahaha.... Maybe he can have his own cooks show.

You pulak Creative Man Cooks. How? I volunteer as your Guinea pigs la

I know this Thambee pandai buat Roti Naan with cheesy mutton curry. That one helps those with chronic constipation to flush out their colons. Muahahahaha

  37. Yea many cook show feature or hosted by celebrity. Some are women with loads of sex appeal(sex sells) and stuffs like that.

Anyway, they make it like so easy to cook but when really do it...it's not that easy at all la

    1. hahaha, if the sexy lady can really cook then it's a real cook show lah.. if not, then it must be classified as "porn"~~ :D

    2. This aunty Chef who went to jail and cooks well in NYC has no appeal at all but she has good merits from past lives. After jail time, her show's popularity soared! How geh??? Remember that we all humans use karma to trade with each other and Martha Stewart still has abundance!

  38. Totally agree with you la. If the host and co-host have goo rapport with audience then it is easy to absorb what they "teach" . Otherwise will be blur

I find some cook show they like to use big words. Some words I also dunno what the heck it is....some say you cook using this "XXX method"(sorry ah i also dunno what the heck big word is that) but in layman terms just blanch la the vege.

    1. oh yeah, the presenter is very important to a show leh.. if can make the show lively ah, really "vermicelli also taste like shark's fin" lor.. if the host is a boring person, then sure ruin the show lah..

I have met Chef Wan many times, dunno him but he has good PR & a joker. All makciks love him. I wonder who is Meow's idol chef diva?

  39. Yea some simple ingredient and simple recipe with a bit of imagination and creativity can really spice up a dish.

Am reading a book A Tiger in The Kitchen by Cherly Tan. The way she talks about cooling and her journey on learning how to cook from her aunts is very interesting . a lot of agak agak method and some things you cannot really measure to the last gm. Have to pandai pandai twist and turn. Learn from experience

    1. yes, cooking is all about creativity and imagination!! ah yes, the fun part is not to follow exactly the exact measurement in the recipe, but to "agak agak" to follow what we can think or imagine :)

    2. My mum was also the agak agak chef who left behind some precious recipes. One was Tunku Abdul Rahman's favourite which she had to cook & send to his palace in Penang whenever he had cravings. If I could find the old photos of my mum and Tunku, I will post it.

  40. 4-5 dish done under 20 minutes...I find it hard to believe. Unless it is solely on cooking side la . Not include the preparation time and etc. Coz sometimes we will need to marinate the chicken and meat few hours and sometimes overnight.

Vegetables and ingredients also need to be chopped.

If everything have been prepared before hand then time to cook 20 minutes will be enough la.

    1. ya woh, one episode like 30 minutes but that includes going to the market and preparation and cooking and finally eating.. then really see her cooking 4-5 dishes one go leh..

    2. It is not impossible esp all the Chinese restaurant chefs behind really have hands full and cooked non stop. I have seen several times and they could cook curry, fried vegetables and fried special chicken all at once with 2 woks & 1 pot at the height of big flames. It cooks faster and better with huge flames besides tossing them for more O2!!!

  42. I love to watch cooking show too. I'm always amazed by the expertise shown by the chef. Sometimes by watching those cooking shows, I get some new ideas on how to cook better dishes.

  43. Haha you are so funny la SK! Of course we know the guy inside the photo isn't you la!! xD
But that lady, Mario Cordero, I am sure she is someone most people are familiar of, she can act and can sing, and now can host, and I think her voice can be easily recognised.

This show I know but I don't watch, just watch the trailer on Astro only. Really can shop for cheaper stuff yet eat well? Good also hor, I am sure housewives will love this show. But the show is about food and price in HK right? Somehow a bit different for Malaysian, but can take as reference la!

    1. Eh I also love watching cooking show, but not this one la, I normally watch those showing in AFC, or Food Network on Astro, mostly English based one, and I focus more on desserts, or those simple and quick menu. Not that I will cook exactly what they share but its so enjoyable to watch!
Strange, sometimes I realize people who don't normally cook (or don't know how to cook) loves cooking show, or those like reality show like Hell's Kitchen... Hehe~
