My Growing-up: University Days
Growing-up University Days Playing with Snow University of Sussex Brighton UK

great!! i know you choked very badly when you saw the photos above, you wanted to believe that was me in the photo yet not convinced (after comparing to the now me)?? seriously, i assured you that person in the photos was me, muahahaha!! why am i showing these horrible photos out of a sudden, you may ask?? i recall my growing-up series of posts, of which the last post was published 18 months ago on my college days.. abandoned for too long, i thought i am going to resume the series today, continuing with stories from my university days..

so, what story can i tell from these two photos?? in point form..
  • these photos were taken about 20 years ago in December 1996 during my university days, in the campus during term break.. Uncle was still a teen!!! :D
  • that was the first time i see snow in my life, was of course extremely excited and hence a few of us kampong Malaysians cared for nothing but just went out to play and take photos.. digital camera wasn’t popular then, hence taking film photos meant this was something big!!
  • i wasn't wearing thick winter clothes because it wasn't that cold while snowing compared to when the snow is melting, and i was wearing thermal inner wear to keep myself warm on top of my body fat, kekeke..
  • lastly i must tell you that i really feel like slapping that me in the photo while looking at him now.. muahahaha!! that unsightly fashion sense, that horrible "sexually vague" hairstyle!! OMG!! let me explain why:- (1) we fret to go to angmoh barber or hairdresser, (2) we were at times very bothered about spending extra money, (3) this Aaron Kwok inspired hairstyle was still influencing, (4) many Asian looked like that macam and i was proudly one of them.. :p

    3. The photo on the left and the one on the right, I assume were taken during the same time period. Not one or two years apart. That was your first year in the university? Still a teen? Hmm...you entered uni early or what? I remember my first year mates were 20 or 21. I was 17 going on 18 due to express class and matriculation. I did enjoy my status a baby of the class. But now here I am, an auntie. Sigh...

    4. Ah, so fortunate to be able to study overseas for a different cultural and environmental experience. I graduated from local university. Wished that I had the opportunity to study overseas.

    7. wah 21 years old already graduate ah. You also in express class ke? That time you were like 18 years old? After form five straight masuk uni . Still very innocent leh. Your parents willing to let you travel alone so far.

  2. December 1996. That was a long time ago hah..hah...I was already working then, This post does remind me of my uni days. I would say that those were the most enjoyable academic period of my life. Going through the stages of education from kindergarten (ah! You have any photos from then??), primary school, secondary school, matriculation and university, I would choose to go back to university. I wonder if you felt the same way about your academic journey.

    1. I guess during your term break, you and your friends must have taken the opportunity to explore your surroundings. Where were you anyway? You did not mention which country. Maybe you did in an earlier post and I could have forgotten or missed it.

      Delete
    2. That was probably the time too that you followed fashion and music trends. I cam't remember much of the late nineties probably due to me spending most of my time at work. I hardly listened to the radio or even watched TV to know what was the latest songs or trends at the time.

    3. haha, yes, December 1996 was really a long time ago!! it was term break and everyone was preparing for Christmas celebration.. can't remember we actually go anywhere far because that time really very "frugal" worry to spend a single pence more..

I thought that was your headmistress, or form teacher, or aunty, or a (lady) relative leh.. Look like an aunty leh.. Then ahh, I see clearly ahh, eh, that’s SK !! I remember SK’s big glasses and the eyes la !! Then I see the second picture, ok, confirm it’s SK.. But the first picture really looks like a woman, that’s why I was thinking you wana blog about your headmistress or some old relative of yours.. wakakakakaka..

      Delete
    7. But that was the fashion then. You didn't look like an auntie at all just a little bit childish.

  4. Hahahaha! Our Princess Ribbon thought that you looked like an auntie! Actually hor, there was one guy I used to know who had similar hairstyle like you. That was during the late 80's. One day he was in his car and waved at me. I betul-betul thought who is this girl. Then on closer look, alamak it was him!

    5. Now who is Pete again? It makes me suspicious that he is Meow's secret friend. I am sure it is not funny to laugh at SK. He looked cute and smart.

      Delete
    6. Actually ho this hairstyle is consider popular back in the 80s... Plus the nerdy glasses! Actually I think some people purposely go and cut and keep this kinda similar hairstyle these days, 现在很流行复古嘛!So SK, got thought about having the same hairstyle again? :p

  5. I still have not experienced or seen snow in real life. You remember there is this park in Shah Alam where they have an exhibit to show and let you experience what it is like in snowing countries? I went there once long ago. What a joke! It was like walking through a cold room and what you see behind the glass is some pathetic attempt of recreating a very fake looking scenery.

    1. If I were to go to a place which is snowing, wah I will also be spending time marvelling at snow and playing with it whole day. Sure lah must take photo to capture the memories.

      Delete
    2. I actually enjoy cold weather. I was in US once for only a few days. But the snow had already melted. One morning it was -5C and this auntie purposely go outside the hotel to sit at the bench. I was so fascinated by the vapour when I breathe. That was how jakun I was. The ang moh must think I am crazy. It was such a stark contrast to our very hot weather. I want to go back there again!

      Delete
    3. Speaking of thermal wear, it made my skin feel itchy. Especially my legs. So I decided to abandon the bottoms and only wore the top thermal wear. My long pants did a good job of adequately keeping me warm. But then again I had a thick layer of fat to protect me hah..hah...

      Delete
    4. I also remember taking a shower and of course hot water is necessary. The unheated water was so cold and can pengsan I think if shower with that. Anyway, even though it was cold, I still showered twice a day. Can't imagine not having a bath even though I did not sweat and still smelt fresh hah..hah...

      Delete
    5. I managed to touch and see real snow when I was in Canada during year 2000, like PH I also enjoyed cold weather that is why I love to travel during winter

      Delete
    6. haha, that was the first time i see and touch real snow.. a few of us really ran out so excitedly.. i guess many people who have seen and get used to snow must have been laughing at us while they were keeping themselves warm inside the house, haha!!

      Delete
    7. I remembered that I was walking home from college in the downtown when I noticed the whole street was blowing dusts all over in the cold late autumn weather. I covered my face and nose with my long scarf. Suddenly I realised it was not dusts but tiny snow falling as the autumn temperature dropped suddenly to Zero degrees! I screamed in delight to see tiny snow flurries and my tears came down. Adoi! So emo and delighted. Later on whenever TV's weather forecasts announced heavy snow the next day, we always prayed for schools in Pennsylvania to be closed. Yippy!!! The schools really closed many times as the roads were often piled with snow and cars could not drive across. I started to become like seasoned mat sallehs who didn't get excited much as snow was just like rain to us in Malaysia. The worst part was when the snow was melting....argh!! All wet, messy and muddy...

      Delete
    8. wah lau eh...so darn dramatic ah , anay. LOL

got jumping here and there like small boy or not?

yea if already biasa with the thing or snow so will feel like nothing.

Like Mat salleh come to malaysia. Semua wanna buka wanna "sun batheing"...habis balik hotel red like lobster. We pulak if got sun will hide in the house or office or school. even if one step out of the office or house will bring umbrella.

I don't envy them for their snow leh. Maybe see one two days is okay la but when they have snow storm ...adui....very cham ...sometimes electricity got cut off many days and many place not accessible to traffic. There are danger of trees falling down and hempap the house and things like that. You just see Betsy blog la. She and George so old already and they have to go through it . Very salute them

wet and muddy....no thanks....me very clumsy punya...sure fall down and break my bones if wet and muddy. some more snow is slippery i heard

      Delete
    9. Yes betul juga. There seems to be more cons for having heavy snow falls. I might prefer a 4 season country that does not snow, like Taiwan or Hong Kong. I wanna die any minute at the recent heat waves in Malaysia that followed by heavy rain falls. So crazy and make everyone fall sick.

The one you mentioned about Betsy's hubby was peanuts cos they live in Tennessee which is not as freezing like those North East America where I lived to suffer in their brutal winters. No way you could use spades to shovel the piles of snow. They had to use tractor sweepers to bulldoze the snow and spray out salt along all the roads and highways. So suffering yeah!!

      Delete
    10. I experienced snowing for the first time when I was in Korea 2 years ago, it was an unexpected one since it was already the end of winter there. So my aunties and I were so excited when we realize it was snowing out there! But it was damn cold! Anyway it was fun la, just that the snow wasn't thick enough for us to build a snow man, but was enough for us to build snow ball and throw people, wahaha!

      Delete
  6. Now back to your hair again hah..hah.... It is very, very different from what you have now. Seems like you had more and thicker hair with the old style. Macam mop leh :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You must not be too harsh with your old self lah. I mean, that was THE trend at the time mah. Of course many youngsters at that time will look up to their pop idol or movie stars and follow their hairstyle to look cool. Betul tak? For the girls even more so. I remember at one time, the late Lady Diana's hairstyle was the rage. It suited her but not everybody else.

      Delete
    2. But you know what? I am thankful you did not appear with curly hair. I mean, that one ah, maybe deserve a small slap lah, With all due respect, I cannot tahan guys who perm their hair. Natural curls OK, but not permed hair.

      Delete
    3. Speaking or curly hair, I did perm my hair before. Twice some more. First time was my mum's suggestion. BIG mistake, I came home and wrapped my head with towel to prevent my brothers from laughing at me. I really regretted. But soon enough, my hair grew out.

      Delete
    4. Then years passed, I forgot how ridiculous I looked and did it AGAIN! That was before graduation. Alamak! Well, lesson learnt. No more perming hair.

      Delete
    5. Since we are talking about hair, all my hairy issues are coming out. So please bear with me. Another thing is dyeing the hair. Aku tak boleh tahan with guys who dye their hair. Sorry. Just expressing my opinion only. I am old fashioned and I don't mean to offend anyone. One thing that gets to me is Asians having blonde hair. It looks weird. But that's just me. Jangan marah.

      Delete
    6. yeah, that hair!! OMG, i really don't understand why i could tahan that, it actually feel so heavy and messy, and probably need to use more shampoo too!! anyway, we don't even know what you look like since you only post your cakes instead of our face, so curly or straight hair on you?? cannot tell lah~~ :p

      Delete
    7. I just wonder whether SK had ever dyed his hair blonde or pink? I have highlighted my hair brown and red before! The world nearly turned crazy when I went to office and met clients. I actually did that due to feng shui beliefs for auspicious colours. That was how crazy I was.

      Delete
    8. i think i can understand why you can tahan the hair so long and messy at that time. first of all your place there cold mah. not hot like here. not much sweating so tarak rasa sticky and hot.

some more the hair covers you face and ears. Kira as like extra "protection" from the cold weather la.

And when you biasa with that one already, you won;t feel heavy or anything la.

Like me i used to have very long hair. You and Anay alreadyknow how long it was, right? You saw the photo before. And people used to asked me how i wash my hair and how I can tahan it being so long. Well...dah biasa already mah. tak rasa heavy or anything. But now if as me keep that long...well....i don;t think i can do it again la.

hmmmmm....apa macam SK...anay sound like challenging you to color your hair wor...blonde? not bad leh. Blondie looks younger leh usually....nah...i say usually ah....not confirm punya ah.

not crazy when you color your hair due to feng shui, Anay. Many still does that. Saw in relative and others. During Chinese New Year color or highlight red...ong ah... there is one lady boss of a chicken rice shop in kelana jaya that color her hair pink. she was quite old leh. It's all for business leh

      Delete
    9. Yeah I hope Thambee would colour his hair in shades of pink and green to boost his career! Wakakakaka
I remember Meow's hair, so panjang like a pontianak!! Muahahaha Just kidding. ... I also wonder how troublesome to wash and dry your hair in 30 minutes before Kaldip came to date you out for movies!! You had to invest more money in shampoo and conditioner too!

      Delete
    10. Haha, PH, why guys cannot perm hair leh? Erm you mean like Eason Chen that type? Like once look sure knows it's perm and not natural one....
But nowadays guys also go saloon perm hair liao... I think depends on hair stylists and also the face shape of the person, some after perm very good looking and edgy, some, like you said, wanna slap him, LOL!

Anyway, my brother, he has natural curled hair one, many mistaken he went and perm, I said no, it's natural one... How rare is that? Whole head also curly hair wo! And myself, also got natural curly hairs, which I don't like... That's why I prefer to go saloon and do the real curly hair, or rebonding.

      Delete
  7. OMG! You do have your kiddo photos hah..hah...hah. I just clicked on your growing up series lah. Gosh I love that photo of a very young SK sitting on top of the make-up table. You were like "YEAH! YEAH!" I wonder what was on your mind then.

    1. If I looked at that photo and was not told it was you, I would not have guessed correctly. I guess even back then, you knew how dress, huh? Or was it your mum who dressed you? hee..hee..

      Delete
    2. So you like that T-shirt and always wear it? I was like that too when young. If I liked a particular dress, I always wear it until my mum tells me to please wear something else for a change.

      Delete
    3. How old were you then? In kindy? You must have been a cheeky kid judging from the look on your face :)

      Delete
    4. yes, that's my growing up series!! i stopped at the post about my college days (that was the 1+2 programme i did there) 18 months ago, so i thought i gotta resume the series now..

    5. Oh Yeah!!! Now I remembered that photo of Thambee sitting happily on the make up table. So cute then. Today he sits in front of the make up table for hours daily before going to office pula. Times have changed dei.

    6. wkakaka....jahat la you Anay..

Sk have to taruk ICI thick Thick leh nowadays. Not that he need it to cover anything but rather have to put on a professional look leh. If he still with ah beng hair style and wear baju like ah pek...habis la all his customers loose confidence in him. His line of work appearance is most important le. No more aaron kwok hair style for him LOL.

Hmm...Sk....you snap photo of yourslef today with what ever you are wearing now. Keep it. in 2025 you go back to the same photo and see whether you will feel like you wanna slap yourself or not. Yes...time changing fast. back 80s...all porcupine and durian heads...then 90s aaron kwok head. ...now...either its very short hair style or the botak look.

      Delete
    7. What I jahat? I am talking facts that SK needs to sit for hours to groom his karipap hair and powder his face with layers of creams until cantek like birthday cake!

      Delete
    3. During that era, we already felt the hairstyle was like a broom! The wind would easily blow and messed those styles. Anyway it was short lived and the fashion changed real fast then. The huge spectacles was like Mrs Doubtfire acted by Robin Williams. Muahahahaha

I had one too and I could see the world better in large frames!

      Delete
    4. Maybe that is why after the aaron kwok hairstyles come the full of hair spray and hair gel style pulak.

huge specs frame very heavy leh. Now is more popular those frameless spec instead of have thick frames one.

    4. Aiyo why this PH so malas to play games one?? I am sure if you attended cooking competition at inter schools, you would have collected many National Champion trophies!!! You would have baked all the cheesecakes and tiramisus besides making so much yummy chicken wings!! That was your hidden talent!!

      Delete
    5. eh me also malas to play games leh. So tarak throphy to show fo my school years.
secondary school die die must choose a sport to be involve in and during the year there will be "pertandingan sukan di antara kelas".

Me always opt netball....as back up player LOL. Form 6 lagi best. Our class all lazy to play but compulsory to d it. So pakat with the 5th formers...wokay jom play. later cikgu ask, say this this core. kasi you all win la. Saja show how only.

  13. I say, SK! Now I realise that you have many talents ler! I know you are good in maths and then you used to be an athlete (never mind that it was in primary school) and now I learn you got bakat for stage performance also !

    1. My last stage performance was in kindergarten. I reckon everyone had to preform when they were in kindy. And yea, they also do up our face like birthday cake, So I can say that my first experience with make up was when I was not even 6 years old.

      Delete
    2. So I would say that your primary school life was very enriching indeed and you had achieved so much!

      Delete
    3. yah, my primary school life was rather interesting and happening.. but i continued to be just a norm in high school forward.. my last stage performance, ah, Form 6 i remember..

    4. SK was so smart and graduated from the best Chinese high school in Klang Valley! Salutes! While you fared well during primary days, I had multiple nightmares instead and hated my schooling life in Malaysia.

  15. Hmmm...high school photos. I come from the old generation where we used camera with film rolls. I had a Kodak and used to save money to buy the film. It's such a far cry from now. People just snap and then can burn photos on CD's. Saves space as we don't need to maintain physical photo albums.

Now is the season to show and tell all our young days photos. I am sure Thambee had more photos than this. So SK saw snow for the first time and was madly excited!! Did you build a snow man anywhere?

It is a surprise that you were not freezing cold when it snowed. Normally it would be near the temperature of 0 degrees celcius and then became slightly warmer before the snow would drop down from the skies like heavens. Usually I would be freezing and had to stay indoors as the temperature was often minus 5 to 20 degrees in the North Eastern America and Upstate areas. If I wore like your sexy outfit, I would have turned into a snow man instantly.

      Delete
    2. muahahaha, that is Auntie Shermaine my Anay!!! surprisingly, i actually don't find it that cold when it is snowing, but after that when the snow starts to melt, it is actually colder.. and yeah, gotta be more careful while walking, else can just slipped and fall flat on the street..

      Delete
    3. Now you made me think about the rain and snow falling which have same process of reaching extreme temperatures before the skies dropped something. Yesterday it was very hot in Kuala Lumpur like 35+ degrees celcius until I wanted to die of heat stroke. Suddenly the night saw thunderstorms with heavy rains pounding down. Whola!!
Same goes with the winter when the freezing weather would hit to Zero Degrees till my bones would crack before the snow came down. By then, the temperature would be milder by few degrees with snow falling. So shiok memories.

    4. oh this Twilight Man has become Somewhere in Kuala Lumpur to talk about the weather in this blog?? muahahahaha~~ :D

have never been to place with winter so cant imagine how it's like that snow falling but not that cold.

the weather so extreme ah, anay. no wonder saw each winter say got streets people frozen to death and have frost bite. That is very bad leh. don't know our side here flooding with all sort or penyakit is better off or their side with extreme weather.

But nowadays seems like weather going crazy . too much of extreme tempreture. amagedon?

The more I see your snow pixs, I will get into emo mode. Such moments were priceless especially when it snowed as we would never know what time it would snow excatly. The snow often lifted up the most sombre moods and excite everyone to jump into delight as if the skies rained money. Wakakaka

I am thinking now when would be the next time I see snow falling down again. I saw snow so many times over the last few years in Korea, Japan and China but they were already covering the ground and roads white. I wanted to see them snowing heavily but none. In Korea, I saw tiny snow flurries dropping down like dusts but that was not enough. Thambee, let's go back to Kashmir in India and play snow! Nandri!

That's the trendy hairstyle then, straight with lots of hair that covers the head like a coconut and do not need any gel. Must need a lot of conditioner to keep the hair soft and sometimes it covered one side of the eyes too....muahahahhaa.... Nice pic SK!

    2. Yup I fully agree that you should just show the photo on the left that would send all the world's guesses wrong! It didn't look like you simply because the angle of the photograph was taken. You looked so innocent and lost staring out like that. Looked like Indian Thambee lost in Ang Moh land. Muahahaha

I remember now that I wore caps often to my college as it was freezing my head and the strong wind often blew my long hair into a messy tornado hairstyle! So if I had to attend activities, I would just gel up my hair and combed it sleek to go out without worrying at the tornado winds. Their strong winds could blow any umbrellas into the air and stopped us from walking. So thanks to the invention of hair gels.

She could never cut the same style each time and I had to wear a cap for many days to let my hair grow!!! Kaneeneh! She must be high on weeds! Eh the camera tarak freeze ka in that weather. Heard like those old camera sometimes when come out of air cond car snap photo will be blurr.

Long time ago when Mines Wonderland still around, me and my friends went there. bring the camera to snap photos. aiyo...come out all blur...the ones of the snow house punya la . sakit hati leh when it was developed. Old camera is like that . Sakit hati when the "film" get exposed or when it come out blur.

You and your friends not kampung la. Think not only malaysian students will do that. Other country and even those from the same country will still snap photos in the snow kot.

  39. I was wondering too...wah this SK manyak terrer ah. Snow every where and he only looks like wear 3 layer of clothing leh.

If me I woud be wrapped up like bak chang (dragon boat festival dumpling) jor. Fr me I can stand hot weather but I cannot stand cold weather.

Hubby said the winter cold and the winter house in Mines Wonderland cold is totally different. Not the same at all.

Even if with extra layers of fat which you claimed you have, i doubt that if a in the similar condition i would not be freezing.

  40. again...why la so harsh on yourself?

That time that is the IN fashion mah. In fact you kira as fashionable leh. But if now you still have that hair style then can wallop yourself la LOL...shhhh ...my cousin still having THAT hair style though his is a bit shorter. The fringe cover the eyes and the back is short. Not long.

why fret go to the barber? scared the price expensive? Hmmm.....in campus tarak cheap barber? hahhahaha no coursemate son or daughter of barber who can "help" cut or trim the hair? :p

Totally understand you. Yea...money not enough and some more the exchange rate so high. Parents send you all to university to study , learn and not to go all out fashion here and there. Guess that time study is the main priority follow by food and last baru fashion . Hair long pun tak apa la...those time many having long hair ma.

Hahaha...yea lor...Aaron Kwok very fashion able hair style those days. Though in 1996 kira as ending already la this hair style. He then cut the hair very short like military style right. Dancing to the song...aiyak lupa whats the name...still remember the video he wearing all black like robot .

since most asian look itu macam ...so u kira as not fish out of water la. Means you okay mah that time.

I think most of us also have photos that when we look back and we say yikes...why i look so ah lian or ah beng one that time. How can i in the right mind wear that.

    Part and parcel of life

But during your time was it the 四大天王歌手 generations ya?? (Wonder if is like that then you should know how to sing and dance the 对你爱不完 song lo, hehe!)

  44. I've a thought that every time I look back to my old picture, I always why look so silly and stupid in the picture ya, don't know why ya...do you have the same feeling ya? Or that's what we call the process of growing up, from the immature to the mature face is completely different, but I guess better to found the difference, if 10 years now is still same with 10 years ago of us...then very "charm" lo....

  45. Not even 20 year old in the pic? Wah, that means you went oversea to study so early ya? (Very smart kid ya!!) But that time you went alone or with a group of friends ya? If go alone then you're very brave and independent lo, coz last time when I go oversea to study, I was with a group one, even the flight wasn't sit together la, but at least won't so scared le..

  46. Taking picture with the film camera actually is not bad also, remember I heard something like the film camera is more treasure than the digital camera, because with the digital camera can blindly take without any thinking, but with the film camera every pictures count, can't simply take, have to think before click on the "click" button, so is much treasure...

So by the way, if it's film camera how you got the soft copy of it ya? You scan it into pc is it?? (Wondered you still keep the 底片 of these pictures ya?? Hehe...)

    1. Film camera will be an antique these days, I wonder they still exist or not?
Last time when we were using the film camera, like you said, must think before we snap, else will be wasted. Then must wait and gather until all the films have been used then only can do develop, so each and every pictures count.

  48. I am looking at your winter fashion again. I don't find anything wrong actually. The fashion on you looked fine to me. If I really want to comment, it is the jeans that you wore that time was too flare. Nowadays the fashion is slim fit. Hahahaha! But, your winter jackets were ok to me.

  49. When I first look at the photos, I was thinking who is SK talking about today? Then when I started reading, I was kinda shocked! Seriously it was you?! I look again and yea, I think it was you la, hehe!
20 years ago? Wow, very long time already, and you still can find the photos?
Hmm now it makes me wonder do I keep all my university photos nicely? Where did I keep it? Haha xD I think I still keep them nicely in CDs, during my time, USB is already around but maximum capacity is only 200MB+, that also cost more than RM 100!! Now, 1 Tera also less than RM 50 only right? And external hard disc also very cheap only.
Anyway, during my time, we usually burn data/songs/photos into CD la, easier. But that also very space consuming...

LOL, I can't help but laughing at the last paragraph, you feel like slapping yourself ya? Hahaha!! I know what you mean, sometimes we really have that feeling when we look back at our old looks, and will started to ask, what kinda look is that OMG! And the clothes, so outdated and 'lao beh'! Why would I wear like that that time?
Looking at your hairstyle, you really had that Aaron Kwok inspired hair style, center parting and kinda long, haha!

I think almost every guys same age as you had that hairstyle la! Everyone also got their own past, no need to 介意,it's already over, haha!
