in my previous post we talked about the recent water rationing exercise, and i think to have a topic on saving water would be quite an appropriate continuation.. when you experience water disruption, what would you usually practice to minimize water usage?? any great idea that you would like to share with everyone?? it's none other than reduce and reuse, agree?? click the buttons below to see what i would do.. :)

    2. Great idea, no 1 and no 3. Not too sure about no. 2 - reminds me of that very very tiny hotel (not cheap) in Sg Petani. Kedah. The bathroom/toilet was so so so small - the shower was directly above the toilet bowl!!! And the only toilet in the wall where the toilet bowl is placed sideways, wall to wall - I had a hard time getting myself seated - no space for my knees between the bowl and the wall...so had to sit legs wide open...and had to shower seated in that position! Never again!!!

    5. All the toilets in most Japanese budget hotels are so tiny that you might get stuck inside as the door is only 2 feet wide with the bathroom/WC at 3ft X 5.5ft. I think their bathrooms are ready-made fiber plastics that could be bought from hardware shops. So advanced.

    2. Hello, am back.. Oohh, today talking about about ideas ahh? I browsed thru your ideas, well, I have to say all are quite practical..

Especially the shower head and also the washing machine pipe thingy.. My colleague mentioned about the washing machine pipe, but as far as I know, I never seen my washing machine hose/pipe flowing water out..

Lastime when I was staying with my parents, yep, I have seen the washing machine hose with water flowing out la.. Usually out to the drain behind the house.. But now, in a condo, hmm, never seen that, maybe they have different setting? Not very sure, so can’t comment much..

But yep, colleagues say they use the water from the washing machine to flush the toilets or wash the floors, etc..

      Delete
    3. My idea is simple.. Stand on a tub.. Use the bucket to bathe.. Scoop up, and mandi as usual, but of coz have to “jau ji jau ji” la.. When the water is almost half-full inside the tub, re-use and scoop back the water inside the tub, to continue your bath.. Like if you need to wash your hair, scoop water using the bucket to wash/rinse your hair, then rinse until “kam siong ha”, you use back the water (collected) inside the tub, and rinse your body pulak..

You may say eh, if like that, then the body ma have shampoo stains? Well, “hai kam ger la”, water rationing, wat do you expect? Got extra water to mandi also “tau siew” liao..

Then, after finished bath, collect the same water (in the tub), into a bigger pail, store for flusing toilet.. How? Ok mou?

      Delete
    4. About not washing hair, I think most people can tahan the two days, but sorry not me.. I, for one, have to wash my hair everyday.. If not, I will feel sticky and dirty the whole day leh.. “sum lei” I know, but really, during my confinement ahh, I bathed 5x a day leh.. No kidding..

      Delete
    5. Well, end of the month is coming.. Hope the water ration will stop.. But I heard they are gonna continue for another few months?

      Delete
    6. Princess Ribbon -Go saloon to wash your hair lor... cantik somemore after blow.

    7. huh??!! no water coming out from your washing machine?? how can that be?? your washing machine can telan air?? or so high tech that it makes the water disappear?? haha.. i think it's all conceal and you don't see it only, doesn't mean no water lor.. and OMG!! that is so unacceptable to me lor, reuse the water from your bath for shower?? aiyoh?? but then i think if you can have half a bath tub of water there, no need reuse lor, those used jor geh let it be lah, i rather use less but clean water to shower lor..

  4. good morning SK and all.

Water rationing hot topic. despite nearly daily rain but still have rationing.

due to the water rationing. many have think up loads of good new ways to save water.

Got a friend who shampoo her two sons hair together and using one cedok of water to wash the hair and stuff like that.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Use less body shampoo or soap. Our body not that smell la unless you do hardcore stuffs. Less water needed to wash it off.

      Delete
    2. I do that too! I shampoo both together, both sit inside the tub, use back the same water to rinse, teehee.. Ala, budak.. They wont get too dirty rite.. Cincai mandi kerbau will do la.. kekekeke..

    3. yalah, during the two days with no water, have to do quick shower and cannot enjoy luxury shower or bath time lah.. have to use minimum water as long as we are not dirty then can already :p

    2. aiyoyo, of course my ideas are always practical and never nonsense dei~~

  7. IDEA 1 - I think shower nozzles saves more water as it sprays all over your body from our heads down provided we turn off right away when we got wet enough before soaping. Other wise just use a face towel and wet it before rubbing all over our body to spring clean. Cukup la.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah, i would think using a wet towel to wipe our body would be the most water-saving thing to do.. did any try that and see how much water saved??

      Delete
  8. IDEA 2 - What a silly idea! How to allow the water to flow and conduct soft flush??? Might as well sit on the WC and do your showering so that the water will flow directly into the toilet bowl. I think you better stand inside a huge plastic bucket and shower plus wash your hair. All the water collected inside the plastic bucket could be well recycled to water plants, wash your dog and make a hot cuppa Milo!... Muahahahaha

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. now, that is actually a great idea!! i have never thought of that.. standing next to the toilet and make sure the water flows in may not get all the water down into the bowl.. ah!! i will do so, just stand in a tub and collect all water from there, and give the toilet a nice flush!!

      Delete
  9. IDEA 3 - This idea is brilliant and I should do it! I might have to raise my washing machine up on bricks so that the outlet pipe could be placed into a bucket below. I am curious how much water would flow out. I will feel guilty to see how many thousand gallons being wasted over the years!

    1. you have to prepare many empty pails to collect the water, the speed of filling up the pails would make you busy.. keep that and they are great for flushing toilet..

    2. Ok come back from lunch, got energy to type and the brain can think faster too! hehehe

      Delete
    3. IDEA-1
Erm…this one I probably not so agree. Bathing using the shower head I think is much more convenient and it is pretty fast too. Using shower head, we can control the water flows out - It depends on each person requirements for sure lar… those working the office is cleaner than those working at the construction side – the amount of usage is different too. Shower we can grab with our hand whether to shower our left or right hand, legs or what so ever places we wanted to clean. Perhaps it depends on how their bathing pattern too. Some wash hair first, some wet the body first and some probably clean the private part first. Oops going too detail here…phai seh la. Cos trying to explain in layman terms so easy to understand.
Why I say fast, because the shower has a stand, we can use our both hand to wash our body and hair pretty fast. If use the pail to scoop water out, then it will be lil bit slower… once scoop all water pours down… splash! But not all the body part kena leh… So not enough of hand handling the pail, use hand to rub our body and etc. I will suggest use this scoop water function applies to baby and toddlers…

    4. Sorry ya got urgent things to do just now, coming back here…

      IDEA 2
I like this idea. My mom’s house toilet is separated, but we practice that too. I remember last time, when we was younger, my mum will asked us to stand inside a big bucket, then we mandi and then the water flows down in that bucket lor. Toilet was just next to it, scoop the dirty/used water in a pail, in order for us to bring it to the next door. Good hor, 1st level of primary water use for shower and clean our body and then the 2nd level of water can be used to wash toilet.
We must try to keep the toilet cleans everyday (if not definitely got urine stain and smelly if it’s stay longer. This is to prevent germs and bacteria exist here – no good for children). And the terms you used here “soft flush” is a gentle way to describe the dirty water used by us just now.

    5. To add on with your IDEA #3, not only toilet, Wash our porch? Wash our backyard floor and even wash those places need to be clean surrounding our house compound. What if, we wash our car boleh tak? The detergent solution is different wor? Does it matter at all? For me I’ll use it to wash my tyre’s rim ok right?

Where got? Got meh? Bo wor? U might be out of idea what to post is it? How come leave this IDEA #4 liddat?

Keep rain's water to water plants and lain lain benda lor... Very useful too to keep rain's water. How many of you did that. Probably living in apartment and condo definitely very hard for them to save those rain water. One of my male colleague keep those rain water as the car battery water leh. How true was this I'm not sure. I know we ladies never bother anything about car's repair and maintenance because we leave it to the men's job...sorry ya, because we can count on them mar...But when come to keep those rain water, better becareful or else, it attract nyamuk aedes pula tu....bahaya tu!

      Delete
    8. OK lar typo error IDEA #4...nvm lar...as long as it an idea no harm trying it. But I can tell you those housewife definitely have better idea one. Here are some that I can think of beside keeping the water when rains come.

4.1 - For those who take bath 3 times a day, try to reduce to 2 times a day.

4.2 - I like the idea of washing clothes in bulk rather than a few peices at a time. Have you seen the olden days, how people wash clothes? Some they wash in a big bucket water and wash again the second time in another bucket of water... It rather save the water usage lar.. rather than letting the tap water running...

4.3 - All water that use washing vegetables. Try recycle the water to water the plants outside rather than throw it away. It could be as a "gentle fertilizer"..hehehe.

4.3.1 - Or can use it to wash away dishes and pots detergent away first before go through the second cleaning process of clean water. Then this used water we still can keep it again to clean and wash our table cloth after we wiped the dining table after we had our meal. Eh it sound terrific right?...very good idea of this on going process. So far I never done this before, while I'm writing the idea just flow in... hehehe... genius nya...

4.4 - For those ladies who keep long hairs can cut it short for easy maintenance and washing. Definitely save a lot fo water.

4.5 - What about wash clothes, take bath and done all the things by the river side? mandi sungai kan bagus?

    12. Idea 4 and Idea 5..who can think of it sum more? I already crack my brain and press all the juices liao. Can't think of any... If is to Google not fair right...must have our own creativity and ideas. I agreed what he is torturing us to do so. At least he makes us appreciate every drops of water. Besides that, I believe those strange, cheeky ideas and even silly ideas probably and some do really work to some of us. Stupidity ideas can be a genius one! Wakakaka....I got another glamor name already the Watermelon head...hehehe... Sorry to rant here..I'm waiting for some reports to be generated. So please with me here...let me sembang.

Overall no matter is a good or bad idea, we must try to make use of it and remember that water and electricity is very important to us...so jangan membazir. Remind ourself to save water and electricity no matter there's any rationing scheduled again or not... try to apply in our daily life. I guess that is the way for every household to get use and continue to practice... So at the end of the day, when the authority say Catuan Air sekali lagi, then you all might not think this is a big issue lor.

Great ideas! So creative la you!

My friends who enjoy their hot tubs at home (obviously they live overseas) save the water in the tub and channel it for the first cycle of their laundry. Water and electricity not cheap la!

But of course, the water is consider clean because they always shower first before dipping in the tub of hot water. :)

My houseld, we use the water (with the detergent) from the washing machine to wash the yard area where we put the washing machine. ;P

    1. yeah, i think it's a brilliant idea to reuse the water from our laundry!! great for flushing toilets and also washing the yard etc..

  22. Actually, I read somewhere that showering uses less water than using scoops.

But this of course because we don't usually be prudent when pouring water onto ourselves. Or also, because some of us shower for more than half an hour!

I experienced long water cut during a loooong draught in Melaka way back in the 90s. Until now, I am very prudent when mandi. :P

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah, in normal days we scoop and splash and pour generously, that surely use more water than shower.. but when there's no water from the tap, have to use scoop, but then it would be to drizzle slowly onto the body part we target and even use hand to scoop small amount of water to rub.. and yes, i still remember that, i think it's some time in 1999 huh??

    3. i think you don't have to do that in SG lah, rarely you have water disruption huh?? but then even with unlimited water supply, we should try to save water too..

  28. Out of 3 ideas that you shared, I like and do only idea 1. I have to bear with the coldness of water that stored overnight in the pail.
My other option is going to gym/club to shower. I tried to keep rain water in big pail. Did you know my hometown raining damn heavy on those days we suffered from water rationing? So I used rain water to flush toilet and wash dishes. Then, only rinse again the dishes with clean water.
Actually my home town rained heavy since the day the water rationing started.

    1. Yes, it did rain heavily at Taiping during that 2 weeks of water rationing, but still the rationing took place, pelik right? Really scratch head la!

I also collect rain water, no idea how to use it initially but who cares, just collect first la! I also asked my mum to do the same, and my aunty actually taught us to bath with rain water, she said it's fine and is cooling for the body! Erm in the end I din't bath with rain water la cause my concern is it could be a bit dirty, plus I got enough water storage at home so I still use the water from tank to bath/wash hair. As for the rain water, we use it to wash floor/plates, even laundry~

    2. yeah, it rained everyday but not on the right place, so water rationing still has to go on, haha.. anyway, we all now learn different effective ways to store water and to save water, not totally a bad thing at all huh?? would be good to store rain water, but i don't think i will use that for shower or bath, can use for toilets and washing yard lah..

  29. Doesn't quite make a difference whether there is water rationing or not, I still believe in recycling the water as much as possible. Currently living in an apartment I do not have my own rain catchment but I do use water from my terrapins tanks and also water from washing my food processor (only if its fruits and vegie that I just processed in it) to water the plants - good nutrition for the plants.

Car wash is limited to using the pail even though there is a hose at our disposal.

I reckon its all a little here and there that does count a little if not a lot lor.

    1. yes very true, i guess water is precious and regardless of whether there is water rationing or not, it would be a good habit to save water.. and of course, save water means we save money too.. and agree, it's a little here and a little there, but adds up to some significant amount :)

  30. How about using the water you used to wash the vegetables to flush the toilet.

    1. yeah, that is a good idea.. flushing the toilet can be with any kinds of used water.. :)

  32. Idea 1 : Actually I thought shower head saves a lot of water? It took my shower very long to fill a pail of water.

    1. of course when there is no water, your shower won't work and you have to use scoop.. but it's to DRIZZLE water on your body, controlled, not splash generously :)

  33. Idea 2 : This is a NO NO for me!! Reminds me of that horribly small bathroom in Hong Kong hotel where the shower is just above the toilet bowl and I need to shower and avoid touching the toilet bowl. Yucks!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. haha, but the water used to clean yourself can be a great idea to clean the toilet as well :)

      Delete
  34. But even in my own home, I don't like the shower head to be near toilet bowl. You know, the dirty water from showering will make the toilet bowl dirty as well. have to clean the toilet bowl after that!

    1. but when you have no water, you would just do anything to save :p

  38. And I don't wash my car or send to carwash lah. But plants still need watering or they will die, no? How can they tell us not to water the plants? Of course, if it's a rainy day, then I don't water the plants. But if no rain for a few days, must water the plants right?

    ReplyDelete

    1. yalah, cars can be left unwashed, but the plants do have lives like us, they also need water to survive!!

  39. I also collect rain water. Will have a few empty pails outside in the garden during the rain. The water can be used to flush the toilet.

    2. Good morning Sharon...no new post for today. Nvm, we shall give SK a break!

      Delete
    3. Sharon, eat out can be a great idea during water rationing but one concern is, we don't know what water the hawker is using, and whether the utensils are completely cleaned? Of course if that restaurant isn't affected by water rationing then it's fine la, but what if many areas are affected? That will include restaurants too~

      Delete
    4. errr, when eating out, i guess we better not to think too much about what we cannot see or hidden from us, haha!! whether or not with water rationing, there is always issue if it's an issue caused by the people :p

  44. Idea 5, staying in hotel? I went to KL on March. I stayed at one budget hotel near Maluri. I tell you, I also encountered water rationing that time. Luckily I always bathed after all players (ping pong players) left to stadium and before they came back. Pity those players, they didn't bath after their match and stayed smelly until the next day evening. I kept water in the pail and let April bath after her tournament.

    1. I have one more idea to share that SK didn't share in all his 5 ideas.

Whenever we pee pee, we will ask each other in the house "want to pee or not". Usually, Aprill would pee, and May pee, then I was the last one to pee. I flushed the toilet once after 3 person pee pee. Save water la like that.

      Delete
    2. Haha great idea Yan! I also do like this sometimes, ask hubby no need to flush first, I'll flush after I pee pee ;) Or vice versa.
As long as both don't mind to smell each other pee pee for a while, then it's ok la! xD

      Delete
    3. hmmmm, so not nice to have to experience water rationing even if staying in a hotel huh?? and that's a great idea, everyone pee one after another and then flush all at once.. save lots of water like that!!

  45. Good afternoon SK!

  46. Another water rationing-related post? Hmm, I already commented all in the previous posts leh, now no new ideas to give already, so you might see redundant comments here, haha xD

Idea 1, haih I wanna use shower head also cannot la! My room is at upstair so during the rationing, water pressure is too low to pump the water to second floor, hence no water coming out from the heater also, so no choice, have to use the tank water and wash my hair, brrr!
Yes, when it's desperate, we really can do a quick shower using just few scoops of water! When things are back to normal, we'll start to wonder how did we do that that time? Haha xD

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Idea 2, I actually do that sometimes, water from the heater flows near into the toilet bowl so at the same time really can sort of 'flush' the waste, no need to flush second time!
But for those who have separated bathroom and toilet, then this won't work lo!

Idea 3, wow, I never thought of that leh! Good idea too, but a bit troublesome, cause need to do some adjustment on the washing machine pipes and must prepare a few pails to collect the water. Means have to be there when the washing machine discharge water, and change pails if the pail is small.
      Anyway, worth trying also la!

      Delete
    2. Idea 4, yea, similar to idea 3, reuse the water for something else!

Idea 5, this is probably the easiest and hassle free one! Erm of course it involves petrol la, haha! And have to pack our clothes/toiletries.... If one person only then easy la but if the whole family? Sure lots to pack!
Yea, if got money then can go stay at the hotel, but honestly it feels weird to stay at a hotel at our own hometown, 有家不住去住酒店??Haha, elderly sure say like that one~~

    3. By the way, new month so it's time for new banner photo! This time it's about Doraemon! SK's favorite!

    4. haha, yalor, i think many of you have commented all the saving water methods in the previous post, never mind lah, repeat again this time.. i guess the typing is a lot faster right?? because 熟能生巧!! haha..

haha, actually worth trying the idea because when we are really facing the problem, we would try anything possible to save water.. and i guess now whether or not there is water rationing, we should try to practice those so that we are really saving this precious resource of the nature.. :)
