i supposed we do talk to ourselves at times, is there anyone who confirms not having done that before?? anyway, though we talk to ourselves, i think most of us won't be talking to ourselves for long, probably just a few words or the most a couple of sentences, which i find that rather common and nobody will look at us like a weirdo.. but if one is talking non-stop to the empty air, can laugh happily while taking with full expressions and giving responses to the conversation, how would you look at this then?? i saw a such a thing happening in real one day in the LRT, a middle-aged lady was talking loudly and it was clear that no one was around her, but she just seemed to be talking to someone.. at first i thought she may have mental problems, but hearing what she said, it all made sense and absolutely nothing sounded insane, indeed making no difference from a usual person.. hence i thought she was probably chatting with someone else in another dimension (that we usual people may not see).. at this point, i have to say i am very neutral towards such "another dimension", never repudiate and never being superstitious about it.. anything that has happened, as long as rationally explained, be it scientifically or supernaturally, i have no problem acknowledging it (as i am very open-minded and not stubborn, haha!!).. i believe this universe we are living is too vast, that there are many dimensions and areas which our science is not capable enough yet to explain.. i wonder what say you to this?? :)

    1. Yes, I talk to myself a lot. Everyday. I talk to myself when I am driving everyday, in the car. I will imagine and fantasize about things, then I talk about it by myself in the car..

      Delete
    2. After I reach the carpark, before going out from the car, I will usually say "wah lucky I got a place"... Then after I come out from the car, I will say to myself "remember to lock the door, off the car lights"...

    3. I talk to myself mostly in the car... And that's everyday... I wonder who else does the same, haha..
if I am going to see somebody, in the car I will "practise" how to talk to the person and what I should say to the person.. So I will keep talking to myself until I reach the person's place..

  2. I do a monolgue. Especially when I'm running.

Hell! Can even draft blog posts and think of catchy titles too! Now you know why I can write race recaps so quickly. Lol

    ReplyDelete

    1. hmmm, in that case, perhaps you may want to invest in a speech-to-text gadget!! so when you are talking while running, your monologue will straight away become text, then you can just copy and paste to form a new post when you're home.. or immediately with your mobile phone!! ah, how nice?? :p

      Delete
    2. Talking out aloud while running is too tiring lah! Extra air and breathing needed! LOL

Actually, thinking and "writing" monologue in my head suits me fine. I just let the ideas swim around until I have photos to match them and then, once I get them; I can type my blog post in less than 1 hour.

That's why I usually am fast in writing blog posts. Even my race recaps. Same day race recaps possible as I am already "writing" the post in my head as I was running along the course to the finish line. Can even think of catchy title for it while doing so too! Muahahaha

    3. teach me teach me. I always cannot write leh. How ah?

Hahaha...sometimes I "talk" in my heart la not out loud. but then am getting alzhemier liao coz i forget what i talk about very fast . J must have penyakit berjangkit from me coz he also short attention span. Me sometimes planned a blog post but when time to write the words just doesnt come. I find that "thinking" and writing down is different coz thinking we dont have to make proper sentence but writing must make proper sentence moreover comes to blogging . sure will kena hentam by some readers. i pernah kena hentam mah....adoi....

      Delete
    4. Short attention spam not alzhemier la dei! Ini Meow ah... But gotta make sure it's not ADHD .

But J is good what. Talks articulately. Active. Normal la boys cannot concentrate one. My son also cannot focus one. But studies, somehow doing OK still..

Blogging need to be proper meh? I've been reading a lot of atrociously written blogs. Write in English but really bad English one. Never pulak I scold these people.

Who go and scold you? Blogging is up to personal style la. These readers who hantam you? Who are they? I've read blogs by English teachers that are so boring and like being written by standard one pupils. I rather read yours lah!

If blogging needs to be proper, we all can write newspaer or magazines article already lah!

    5. mana aku tau...short attention span then lama lama jadi alzhemier leh. Dont think it's ADHD la.

Your son know what is good and what is not good. J pakai hentam aje. do first the think of the consequence later type

got la...some say not proper english la. write broken english la this and that. what to do?

  3. I talk to myself aloud, sometimes. Seems like perfectly natural especially when trying to calm myself down. But most tomes, after talking, id look around surreptitiously to check whether got anyone looking at me weird or not. Hihi

    1. hahaha, that's when you are aware that you are talking to yourself.. so you look around surreptitiously (i'll look up this word in the dictionary later).. but when you are not aware, which i guess most of the time, it's also truly natural i would say..

      Delete
    2. oi!
You cannot write the word "surreptitiously" and later look into the dictionary la. Terbalik pulak! LOL

Most times, you just naturally talk to yourself. Then suddenly you checked yourself and realised you're doing it in public and got "segan" and then look around to see if anyone looking at you weird or not. hehehe

      Delete
    3. why cannot cannot write the word "surreptitiously" then look up the meaning. I do that leh coz ometimes agak agak know the meaning but just to be sure then look up in dictionary.

      Delete
    4. But that's kinda terbalik?

How do you even know how to spell "surreptitiously" and write it in a sentence if you're not sure what it means?

If agak-agak, I'd go check dictionary first before putting it in writing wor...

one thing that am very bad is the pronouciation. Tak ngum punya pronounciation. In my mind will think of that word but dont know how to sound it out.so sometimes i "talk" to myself by sounding the word out la. if it makes a bit sense then will dare to buka mulut lo

  4. I read that talking to oneself is okay as long as you don't talk back. Then you're nuts. That's what I read.

Now, about talking to someone no one sees is something else altogether. Some people have an imaginary friend too. In a way, that is therapeutic - to get off some stress, some people need that outlet.

      Delete
    3. There is even a website that teaches HOW TO STOP TALKING TO YOURSELF !!

      1. Decide whether or not it is a problem. Only you can decide if it is a problem. If it is a serious problem, you may need therapy to determine what is causing it. Ask yourself these questions:

Is the first thing someone hears from me is me talking to myself?
Do people give me weird looks while I'm walking around?
Have my teachers ever recommended me to the school counselor?
Is me talking to myself such a big problem that I try to avoid public situations to prevent embarrassment?
Do I frequently feel concerned or guilty about how much I talk to myself?

      2. Make conversations with people. Sometimes, the only reason you're talking to yourself is that you have no one else to talk to. But if you make small talk with people frequently, then you should eventually stop talking to yourself.

      3. Try to keep the conversation inside your head. As soon as you find you are talking to yourself out loud, shut your mouth closed. This way, the conversation should continue on in your head. Press your teeth down on your lips so you cannot open your mouth. This will help dramatically.

      4. Cut down talking to yourself. Only allow yourself to do it while searching for keys, glasses, change, etc. But be careful with this step, because once you allow yourself to talk out loud, you might start talking to yourself at other times too. Have strict rules to limit your talking, and if you've followed them for a week, do something to reward yourself, i.e. watch a movie, buy candy, etc.

      5. Listen to music. When on you are on your own or walking somewhere, give your brain something to focus on instead of the subject you are talking to yourself about. If you are wearing headphones and realize you are talking to yourself, maybe people will think the headphones accessorize your cell phone. They will assume you are talking to someone else.

      I truly it could work!

    4. hmmmm, i do believe that kids may be able to see those "extras" and that's why they seem to talk to the invisible audience.. or from another view, kids are more imaginative, so they will just imagine there are people around them.. i think i do that when i was a kid too, of course the latter not the former case.. :p

well, i guess it's perfectly normal for us to talk to ourselves right.. probably just some exclamation or reminder or simple expression - cannot be a complete chit-chat session i assume..

well, driving alone and trapped in the jam, nothing else you could do right?? listening to music or chanting would most probably be the best thing to do to kill time.. errr, or like LouizYee?? just practice talking~~ :D

    7. i do agree those are good references from Twilight Man, at the same time i think the options still need to depend on the situation too.. so it still falls back to our own judgement, or rather are we able to judge or control when things just happen so naturally?? hahaha~~

hahaha me does that too la when in office. If a client irritated me i will mumble mumble curse his family 9 generations :p

Driving i dare not sing coz my driving is still like shit but when cooking i sing sometimes la . People say not good singing when cooking. bring bad luck. but logically i think maybe if singing when cooking it might distract oneself and things might hangus let alone the saliva splashing all over the dish.

Hmmm.... as for the questions :

      1. Nope.. I dont usually talk to myself if people is around la. and am not such long winded till people lost interest in what am saying which result to talking to myself\

      2. I dont really like small talk . A bit is okay la otherwise will lead to gossip

3.That sometimes i forgot and it just escape out like asking "what date is today".

4.Hmmm searching for keys sometimes i do mumble out where i saw them last...cant help it . like by talking out loud i will get the answer

yeah, totally agree with you!! it's a good point there that you mentioned, as long as we don't hurt anyone or disturb anyone, its no harm doing what we want to do!! yes, and sometimes talking to ourselves release the stress - depending if the thing you tell yourself is comforting yourself or adding more stress to yourself lah, hehe.. :p

    1. Here are the examples I talk to myself:

      1. When I want to think or figuring something is right or wrong, whether to tell or not tell, I'll talk to myself in front of the mirror. I do that very frequently. Release stress and tension while working.

      2. When I need to write out any formal form of message or letter to all bosses, any legislation officers, clients, suppliers. Even sometimes, my colleague need to lodge a complaint letter, I'm the who always help them to write it out. I need to think and think... but hor when we spoke it out, it more make sense and it seems more right then... So ini consider talking to ourselves or not.

      3. While I'm baking, I do talk to myself too. Whether to add other thing or not. Always asked myself back "Should I make this or not?"

      4. In Uni times, lots of presentation need to perform. Always stand in front of the mirror to practice.

      5. In car? not yet, unless humming the song is playing from the radio or probably sing a lil bit.

      6. Public areas? No ler...most of the time observe people more than talking to myself. hahaha...

      Delete
    2. actually if i see people talking to themselves, i won't really care whether they are sane or insane, as long as they don't come and disturb or harm me lah..

as for me, errr, i am not able to list down solid examples like you did lah, haha.. because most of the time it comes very naturally and without myself realizing it.. i would usually start with talking to myself in the heart, and whether my voice will come out eventually, i really have no say.. but most probably it will at times, maybe at some more important points then i'll talk a short sentence or so.. i guess happens when i am alone, or even when i am in public.. but i have to say i am lucky in that, when i talk to myself, i won't be loud.. so even if there are people around, they may not hear me~~ :p

    3. Maybe I should finished my sentence by ...as long as they don't come near me, I'm fine sitting at a corner. It will pretty scary too if sit beside this kind of person. You many not know what will happen later on.

  22. Copy pasting from Health Guidance website First part:

Talking to yourself is quite the strange habit that can get you some odd looks and that can make you feel a bit unusual. It is simply the act of talking your internal monologue and speaking it allowed and while it's no harm to anyone, some people will nevertheless want to nip the habit in the bud as it's not exactly considered normal. That said, before you go about trying to stop talking to yourself – ask yourself: is this really a problem? But of course not literally...

Why Do People Talk to Themselves?

Talking to yourself in actual fact is not all that unusual at all, and most people will do it to some degree. It is the media really that has made talking to ourselves seem like crazy behavior, and in reality it's something that can just help us to think or to work with an idea. Whatever the reason, after we've been silent for a while we tend to externalize our thoughts.

The main time most of us speak to ourselves is when we've been alone for a while. This might be as a means to break the silence, to 'flex' the vocal chords, or just for entertainment – but actually vocalizing thoughts can in fact be useful for coming up with new ideas and seeing what those thoughts sound like 'out loud'.

The only time that talking to yourself is really a problem is when the contents of what you are saying are damaging or destructive. Positive self talk is fine, but if you are saying upsetting or negative things then this is a problem and could lead to psychological issues such as depression.

How to Stop Talking to Yourself

If you still want to stop talking to yourself though then there are some simple methods you can try. As already mentioned, the main trigger for talking to yourself is normally that there is no one around and hasn't been for a while. In other words then, the best way to avoid talking to yourself is to make sure that you have other people to talk to and that you stay social. Of course if you're alone for a reason this might not be so easy, so try calling someone up and having a conversation and it should reduce your need for self-chatter.

Another strategy is to put on some music. This way you will distract your inner monologue with lyrics and prevent you from chattering. At the same time if you try singing along with the music, then this will also help you to give your voice the exercise it seems to be craving and will mean you can't talk to yourself. If you were talking to yourself as a way to break the silence, then this should be enough to make that unnecessary.

The same can work with the television, so try watching something on TV or just having it there for background noise just to create the feeling that there's someone there and to create some interest in the room. Watching the television yourself, or reading a book, can be enough to focus your attention so that you don't go stir crazy and your brain is given something to do.

These strategies can stop you from talking to yourself. As can simply making a conscious effort to remember not to talk to yourself (you can even chew gum to keep your mouth too busy to talk). But remember the question is – do you really need to stop talking to yourself?

      Positive Self Talk

If the contents of what you're saying are negative though and you seem to be putting yourself down, having irrational thoughts out-loud or generally thinking destructive things, then the answer is yes and it's important to change your thinking. The best way to do this then is by using some CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) which revolves around seeing the content of your thoughts and changing them. Make sure to make a note of what it is that you're saying that you don't like, and to note anything that crops up regularly. Then when you say these things again you should hopefully recognize them and be able to avoid them.

The other strategy is to replace your negative self talk with positive self talk – and if you do this often enough then it can become habit. Achieve this with positive affirmations such as 'I can achieve anything I put my mind to' or 'it doesn't matter if I fail, it's the experience that matters'. Such phrases will help you to overcome negative thoughts and fears and this is a highly beneficial way of talking to yourself.

  23. A Q&A about talking to onself copy pasted again :

    Q. Dear Sir/Madam,

To understand my issue, I’ll have to give you a bit of a background of myself. About two years ago I went through an event which caused great grief and resentment towards my friends. For the following two years I spent most of my days closed off to any social interaction besides with my family. I developed a terrible habit, of talking to myself outloud. I do this ONLY when I assume that no one is around. I am embarassed, ashamed of this behaviour. I relate talking to yourself, to be an issue of mental disorder. As a perfectly healthy and normal adult, I want to get rid of this habit. I believe I am past what ever events that occured in the past, and I no longer want to exhibit any signs or side effects from those past times. Please, tell me what I can do to stop talking to myself?

    Thank you
    D.B

    A. You did not include information about the event that led to the destruction of your friendships. It has been two years. That event seems to have had a significant and negative impact on your life. Perhaps it has led to your social isolation and contributed to the problem of talking to yourself. Perhaps if you were interacting with friends, then the likelihood of your “habit” continuing would decrease significantly or would vanish completely.

You associate talking to yourself with having a mental health disorder. That may or may not be true. I would have to interview you in person and extract many more details about your concerns to know if there was evidence of a mental health disorder. A clinical evaluation could determine if a mental health disorder is present.

How can you stop talking to yourself? Decrease the time you spend alone and increase the time you spend with others. Being in the presence of others will force you to interact with them. There are times when working alone and being alone are advantageous and desirable but prolonged periods of social isolation are unhealthy. It’s often a sign of depression. Human beings thrive on social interactions. Relationships are very important to the majority of people. Studies consistently show the positive benefits associated with social interaction. Individuals with more social supports are psychologically healthier than individuals with fewer social supports. Virtually all studies show this to be true.

If this is an issue that continues to concern you, then it would be advisable to see a mental health professional. The find help tab at the top of this page can help you locate a therapist in your community. The therapist might also help you to understand your past relationships with your friends and to remove the pain associated with those relationships. Good luck and I wish you well.

    2. wow...interesting. I didnt know talking to oneself also got a type of study done.

i agree one the part Positive self talk is fine. it would be akward if say in a train and suddenly talk out loud scolding foul language at some thng that had upset ones.

it is possible to stop talking to ones self but i dont think it will be possible to totally stop. Like let say we walking and sudenly fell down from a banana skin on the road. I would scold out loud in foul language cursing the fella who left the banana skin there la.

what the positive self talk part is good leh. I remember when am in school my studies is not that good. Sometimes i tell myself aloud "You can do it or your surname is not XXX"...so kira as positive talking ka?

      Thanks for sharing Lina :)
