:)i believe we talk over the phone everyday, besides those irritating telemarketing calls, i do realise there are these kind of people around us, who somehow confuse me on how to respond..
  • you're calling somebody, and after pick-up the receiver remains silent and expects you to give a response first.. don't you think this is a bit not right?? i supposed when you pick up a call, you should immediately give a response to the caller, am i not right??
  • you pick up a call and the caller straight away ask "whom am i speaking to??".. i actually find this quite impolite, i'd expect the caller ask something like "may i speak to XXX??" instead.. that question is only appropriate at the end of the call if XXX is not around..
  • you are sure somebody dialled the wrong number, but the caller keeps denying.. never willing to tell who he/she is, who he/she is calling and what is the number he/she is calling, but instead tries to ask 1001 questions on yourself.. don't you think this is very absurd??
given that you are on the phone with somebody (with bad telephone etiquette) like those above, how would you handle them?? :)

  3. yup... immidiate response is needed...
in call center, we called it, "dead Air"
as a call center agent before... we should answer the phone 5 seconds after it rings

    ReplyDelete
  4. hahaha...always meet this situation....

    ReplyDelete
  5. @2 ahaha,.. that's weird... you should know who will you be speaking with... You are the cller so you should be aware of the numbers you are dialing and aware of who is the owner of that numbers... haha so no need to ask who are you speaking with

    ReplyDelete
  6. i agree.. it should be.. May i speak to XXX... and then when XXX is not around... then that's the right time to ask "who am i speaking with"

    ReplyDelete
  7. @3 i have the ame experience before...

  14. I spent some time in the U.S. You know how Americans answer a call? Usually they will immediately utter their own names before they callers ask.

I have written a post on this topic. Click here to read.

  15. Have been receiving wrong number calls many times and some caller insisted to know my number and I said wrong number and ask the caller what number he wants to dial instead of giving him the number..

  16. Even had calls from China gal (I guess so) as she only speaks Mandarin even when I requested to converse in Cantonese she refused and that's something not right for a Malaysian not to speak Cantonese. Told her I can't understand Mandarin and she said I spoke well (alamak) oh gee! she is real something. Finally I told her sorry we have to end saying I really cant understand Mandarin as I can only speak a few words does not mean I can understand all of them.. phew!!!tQ

    ReplyDelete
  49. If someone called me and ask who am I, I will ask the caller back who is calling there. I won't disclose my identity to strangers.

  62. bluedreamer27:
haha, i purposely make this look like an MV, because Lady Gaga is singing "Telephone", haha and i trapped you clicking that.. yeah, i would expect the receiver to give immediate response once picking up the call, this is to give signal to the caller that the conversation is now started right?? hmmm, 5 seconds is not that demanding, i've heard now the call center operators need to answer calls within 3 rings, that's a KPI.. hehe, so you've always been scolded by nasty and frustrated customers when working in the call center?? hmmm, guess this is one of the lesson you must learn - stress management, haha.. get used to it, and guess you'd be alright.. :)

    bluedreamer27:
errr, i guess asking whom they are speaking to is more of calling to a hunting line than personal line.. especially at home, some unknowns just would like to ask who we are first thing when we pick up the phone, isn't this very funny?? but there's really not a need to know who picked up the phone right?? just straight away ask for the one you are calling, it's that simple and don't mess around.. and as for the wrong number, sometimes i can be irritating.. and ended up i'll get frustrated and hang up most of the time.. i don't have time to mess around with such people..

    ReplyDelete
yeah, that's why all these kind of people are still staying alive around us.. haha!!

    Bananazஇ:
yeah i think it's a good habit to state your name first thing first when you pick up the call, this will make the caller clear - so no questions asked further, hahaha!! oh, for the wrong number case, the irritating part is that, you are asking the caller what number he tried to dial, but yet he is not willing to tell, and so asking you in return what number is yours.. crazy right?? hahaha, so what did the China girl want from you?? guess would be some prank.. you know what?? when you sense something not right, then you just speak with her in some other language that she will not understand well, and then she will sure feel helpless and no choice gotta choose to end the conversation.. so prepare yourself a few dialects to handle such cases, hehehehehe~~ :D

    ReplyDelete
  64. khengsiong:
yeah, i guess it's good to state your name straight away when picking up the phone.. this will make things clear.. but most of the time in Malaysia, you will only hear "HARLOW??", haha~~

    edward:

    ReplyDelete
  65. manglish:
errr, sometimes it will really happened that you dial the correct number, but somehow during connection it went to some other number.. that's why it causes confusion.. normally i'd just politely tell the caller wrong number, unless those who kept denying and asking lots of questions, i'll just hang up..

    Mei Teng:
errr, even for this case, the caller already have somebody in mind already.. instead of asking whom he is speaking to, perhaps he gotta state clearly whom he is trying to talk to, and the purpose of making the call.. not just kick off the conversation by asking whom they are speaking to.. i mean this is always the last one to end up the call, right??

    ReplyDelete
  66. Danny:
hahaha, you scold your friend over the phone?? hmmm, maybe i shall avoid calling you then, just text will do, cos i may not know when you'll suddenly ki siao lor, hahahaha!!

    uLi.
wah, your temper so bad one ah?? sometimes it's not the caller's purposely intention mah.. also, many times it could be the connection problem that route to the wrong number woh..

    ReplyDelete
  67. iamthewitch:
i think after a while, i will just try to say "hello" and see if the receiver respond.. sometimes it might be because we don't hear each other..

    CheaHS@n:
yeah, i experienced that quite some times, the same number keep calling in, guess they must have been given the wrong number purposely?? haha.. but if the caller is polite and didn't try to talk too much, i'm ok with that.. but for those who thot the number must be right, and as if i am the one making mistakes, then i will feel very irritated instead..

    ReplyDelete
  68. Donna:
hahaha, very funny lor, maybe that is your company's policy.. must say alot of introduction and greetings and then end up with "how can i help you".. your supplier must be used to this, won't interrupt and will wait for you to complete saying only start to talk, hahaha!! but sometimes talk so much of greetings and introduction also no good lah, people won't be able to listen one.. like pick up already, 一輪嘴 like that, at last the caller also need to ask again who they are speaking to lor.. sounds familiar leh this case, hahahaha!!

    CheaHS@n:
hahaha, guess you must have lots of friends and colleageus that you cannot remember?? or is it your problem that you have problems with remembering people?? funny, very funny.. and i hate those who like to make people guess who they are, i think it's very childish, don't you think so?? hahaha.. normally i won't guess, just say "i don't know".. and you know, suddenly give you a call after such a long time not keeping in touch - sure must have something not-really-nice to bug.. agree??

    ReplyDelete
  69. Donna:
no lor, even if not the people i'm expecting, i'll ask to speak to that person straight away lor.. unless i really need to know who i am speaking to them i ask lah, or else really not necessary to know who answer the phone mah, right?? haha, no lah, even with close friends i will still say "hello" or "wei", just with different tone lor.. because people still expect hello or something one mah.. hahaha, i purposely do the media player mimic one, hahaha!! because like lady gaga singing telephone mah.. and i also put the karaoke lyrics, make it so real right?? kekekeke :D

    Donna:
yalaa, if wrong number then quickly apologise and hang up the phone lah.. for what jesus sake they still want to talk and talk and try to veriry, and still don't want to admit they are calling the wrong number?? haiz, i really hate this lor.. and then couple minutes later, call again, and repeat the same thing, i will really feel frustrated lor.. until i rejected the call then he knows already, and never call back.. errr, for me lah, i will always pick up although from numbers i don't know lah.. but then if got miss calls from numbers that i don't know, then i will not return call one lor.. if urgent then they will call again mah, else means not urgent then no need return call lah.. because now a lot of those telemarketing people call me, i really have no time to return their call and entertain them lor..

    ReplyDelete
  70. Ashley:

    vialentino:
of course if not purposely then i won't angry, sometimes it might also be the connection problem route to the wrong line.. wow, you will scold every salesperson calling you?? hahahaha.. maybe i should act like you also, i really receives a lot of those call, very irritating lor.. but still i very politely reject their offer lah, because they are also people working for a living mah..

    ReplyDelete
  71. Medie007:
haha, then this is a good habit ah.. but i would suggest you say "hello" after the receiver when u call next time, hehehehe~~

    Ghosty Nana:
yeah, guess this is what we all expect right?? receiver to respond once pick up the phone, to signal the caller that the call is connected, please start conversation.. ya ya ya, i hate being asked first thing first who i am, i will in return ask who the caller is looking for, it's just not nice to identify yourself to the caller right?? hmmmm, no lah, no secret admirer lah.. it must be their secret admirer purposely give a wrong number, and so unfortunately it coincidently became my line, hahahahaha :D

    ReplyDelete
  72. L²:
errr, no lor, i will still be very polite one, i got class one ok?? btw, how do you pronounce @%&*@%$%&&@#$@?? hahaha :D

    Kelvin:
hmmm, normally i will try to make a polite ending, unless if the situation really turns out too irritating for me, i'll just hang up straight away, with a bang!! haha.. :p

    smallkucing:
normally i'll try to end the conversation in a polite way, unless it has breached my patience threshold.. :p

    Isley Chang~:
haha, sometimes it's really not the caller's fault.. it could be because of the connection that routes to the wrong number.. not good to ask people to "go to hell" ok?? hahahaha.. :p

  74. Gratitude:
errr, maybe this is the way they speak.. i know they always tend to speak loudly as if they are quarrelling with each other.. don't you agree me with their style?? hahahaha.. :D

hahahaha, sorry for making you click that play button.. i was actually thinking that since this is a still from Lady Gaga's MV, i might as well do a media player mimic for that picture.. but fun to have caught some reader trying to play the image, hehehehe :p

  84. for #1, if after a while there's still no response, i'll say "hello??" in a questioning tone.. it could be that i can't hear the receiver..

    ReplyDelete
  85. for #2, i hate this too and i will never reveal myself.. instead i will ask in return who the caller is trying to look for..

    ReplyDelete
  86. for #3, guess i will not entertain for long, when i feel impatient already, i'll just hang up, don't waste my time..

    ReplyDelete
  87. #1 doesn't bother me because sometimes connection is bad resulting in delayed response - benefit of the doubt.

#2 cracks me up - clearly, tel etiquette lessons required.

#3 I normally don't entertain caller. I just plainly tell him/her that he/she's got the wrong number and hang up.

    damn rude. :p

    ReplyDelete

orh, so simple only ah?? i thot need to greet good morning/good afternoon/good evening, then say what company, what department, who you are, and finally how can i help you.. so your botak GM will test you all one or not?? last time i word in Bank hor, then got a team of HR people very bad one, will call to random people and then test their telephone courtesy.. luckily i always follow and never kena lah, but got one uncle he everytime "hello" only, so kena lor, hahahahaha!!

    victor:
#1: same here, i would suspect perhaps it could be reception problem, if still no response then i'll just hang up..
#2: haha, i guess many of us will do this.. i don't understand why they need to know whom they are talking to, haiz, is it important at all??
#3: errr, this is testing my patience.. once it reaches its limit, i will just hang up without giving a warning..

    ReplyDelete
  96. HappySurfer:
#1: haha, you always think the good side huh.. yeah, i will suspect it's the reception problem.. if there's no response, jsut hang up and don't waste the air time~~ :p
#2: and why the hell do they need to know whom they are talking to at all?? i thot this is only appropriate to end the conversation if only needed??
#3: yeah, good.. but sometimes they keep calling the same number until they can accept the fact that they have the wrong number.. haiz..

    Tekkaus:
#1: haha, so only business and family?? what about friends and relatives?? you missed that out already, geez :p
#2: i guess a normal person will just respond once pick up the phone right?? but maybe there might be some reception problem that the other end couldn't hear us..
#3: haha, you think they can't differentiate between a human voice and a machine voice?? well, i will always ignore that question and ask who they are looking for..
#4: yeah, it could be the connection problem routing to the wrong line, i've had such experience before also..

    ReplyDelete
  97. Merryn:
haha, sometimes i try to be a nice guy mah, because it might not be the caller's fault by the connection that route to the wrong line.. but most of the time, i won't think this way, i'll just hang up to save my time~~ :D

  98. oh sure i wil... yikes.. wow i never realized that it is really a perfect timing to feature you this month...

    ReplyDelete
  99. Wah, how many posts did L miss here? Like long time didn't visit your blog! Or was it just my imagination?

    ReplyDelete
  100. OMG! I'm out of the Top 8 Commenters! No !!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Hey, this photo - doesn't that looks like Lady Gaga? And she's singing Telephone?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Hey! And that's the Malay translation of the Telephone lyrics? Stop calling! Stop calling! Haha!!! Is this supposed to be a video?

    ReplyDelete
  103. Can't help laughing at the Malay translation of the Eng lyrics. Is there such a video or is this all your clever creation?

    ReplyDelete
  104. I would love to hear how the song is sung in Malay! Sure sound funny! Haha!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Wah! 108 comments oredy! Can I make you reach 200 comments? Can I? Can I? Is it even possible?

    ReplyDelete
  106. OK, I guess 200 comments a bit too far fetched if only me doing it here. So let's see how about 150 comments? What u think?

    ReplyDelete
  107. Since I need to go back to No.1 I must do something drastic and that is to comment spam till the cows come home! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  108. But I think others willl think I'm crazy or something so I better not be so drastic. I think 120 comments enough lah, right? kekeke

    ReplyDelete
  109. Unless of course you award your Top Commenter with something good then I will go all out! But no prize? Hmm....a bit lazy lar : )

    ReplyDelete
  110. Might as well go and sleep right? What's the point of spamming your blog with worthless comments? OK, I know - just for the fun of it! And I'm having fun! Yay!!

    ReplyDelete
  111. OK, OK! Too much crap comments here oredy. Let me read what you have posted and respond accordingly. Haha

    ReplyDelete
  112. Huh? You call somebody and the receiver remains silent? You mean he just pick up the phone and keep quiet? And you need to say Hello? Hello? first? Ridiculous!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Actually, I have done that before! I mean as the receiver and NOT the caller! Hahaha!!

Someone called, I picked up the phone, but I did not say anything while the person who called kept saying "Hello? Hello? Anyone there?" LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Now why I did not say anything? I tell you, I have a valid reason. It's bcos my mouth is full! I was eating and my mouth was too full with food - could not talk!! But must answer the phone anyway! Kakaka!!

    ReplyDelete
  115. So next time you call some one and they give you the silent treatment, don;t jump to conclusions - give them the benefit of a doubt - perhaps they are eating and their mouth is too full to talk! Haha!

    ReplyDelete
  116. On the 2nd situation where the caller straight away ask "Whom am I speaking to?" Yes, I think it's rude! Very rude in fact! Why should I even answer to that right? I don't even know who he is in the first place!!

    ReplyDelete
  117. It should be me asking that question, not the caller!!

    ReplyDelete
  118. In this case, I would usually not give the caller the satisfaction of an answer. Instead I would ask "Who is calling please?"

    ReplyDelete
  119. But there was once I was quite irritated and was in a bad mood when I received such a call. When the person asked "Whom am I speaking to?" I replied "Sorry no such person!"

    Hahaha!! : D

    ReplyDelete
  120. On the 3rd situation, I do get very annoyed with such idiotic callers! Normally, if they keep denying and refuse to tell me the number he/she is calling, I would just say hang up!

    ReplyDelete
  121. The trouble actually starts when the person whom I just hanged up earlier called again and again! They simply did not believe they have dialled the wrong number! What the f....! In such cases, I would lift the phone off the hook! Haha!

    ReplyDelete
  122. yikes me too went down to top 6... haha this is really a tough fight lOL

    ReplyDelete
  123. eh.. got prize, i will definitely try harder loh... =.=

    ReplyDelete
  124. me alone can spam 100 comment, every comment only got 1 alphabet.. muahahahahahhaa..

    ReplyDelete
  125. compare to foongpc, i still kalah "9 streets" la..
he every comment also so long one.. mine is short and sometimes just "hahah. " =.=

    ReplyDelete
  126. the other day after your post, my colleague asked me to call my boss coz she forgot to bring her hp..

    ReplyDelete
  127. I called the wrong number.. still dunno why wrong number though.. =.=
i remembered i press the right one wat, wtf..

    ReplyDelete
  128. then instead of polite female voice (my boss), it was a man with very rough voice..
    =________="

    ReplyDelete
  129. instead of "hello", i got "HALO!!! HALLO!!!! HALO!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  130. =.="
i was shocked and kept quiet a while then told him "sorry wrong number"

    ReplyDelete
  131. and hang up the phone.. AHAHAHAHAHA

    ReplyDelete
  132. so fierce one.... =.=

    ReplyDelete
  133. bluedreamer27:
yeah, hopefully i can reply you before 17th, haha!! but i glanced through the questions, still thinking of what my replies should be~~ :p

    foongpc:
haha, thanks for all the spamming, but you still did not top the list, we have Donna the spamming queen here!! hahahaha!!!
#1: oh you are so bad, stuff your mouth so full until you're not able to speak a word?? hmmm, if that case, i'd rather not pick up the phone..
#2: yah, i think it's very rude to ask the receiver "whom am i speaking to"?? agree with you, instead we must ask in return either "who's calling" or "whom are you looking for".. it makes no sense to answer that question at all..
#3: yeah, when my patience cannot hold the limit, i'll just straight away hang up the phone.. wrong number is wrong number, why need to waste other people's time right??

    ReplyDelete
  134. bluedreamer27:
hahaha, though no prize for the top commenters, but at least you feel proud being listed right?? kekekeke :p

    Donna:
wah, if i gonna give out prize, sure those 1 word per comments those type will not be counted lor.. haha, yalah, so you must practice more, i give you more time for you to gain more experience ok?? haha, but when comes to professional comment spamming, i think i am No. 1 lor, even better than foongpc lah.. eih, sometimes it's not our fault one, it's the connection suddenly "short" already route to the wrong number lor.. hahaha!! now you know sometimes the receiver very fierce when wrong number right?? but you keep quiet of course people will pek chek mah, hahaha.. maybe that was foongpc, kekekeke!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  135. You are no.1 professional comment spammer? Of course lah, the student must be better than the teacher right? And I am so proud to have a student like you! I am such an excellent teacher, yes? Haha! So you now H20N20 me only H10N10 rite?

Anyone reading this if you dun understand about the H10N10 thingy, just ignore it! LOL!!

    ReplyDelete
  136. Donna, aiyo, I think I surrender to you lah. No time to spam so much anymore, but whenver I have the time, I will give you a run for your spamming! LOL!

Bluedreamer, good luck to you if you want to take on Donna! Better just leave one or two words per comment! LOL!!!

    ReplyDelete
  137. we get a lot of advertising calls here and also the same type of caller as if you're the one who dialed to his/her number who wouldn't answer and wait til you talk or something

    ReplyDelete
  138. foongpc:
hahaha, not necessarily that the students are always better than the teacher.. this is a very personal issue ok, hahahaha.. errr, i think i'm more than H20N20, remember when you're aways in Bali, i got H70N70?? else, how can i secured the gift from you?? haha.. ok ok, so the top 3 spaces are just the fight between you, Donna and bluedreamer huh?? :p

    Ayie:
errr, i would think the one who picks up should start responding, it's a kind of telephone etiquette.. as for those advertising calls, errr, just let them finished saying their intention, and straight away i'll say "sorry, i'm not interested, bye"..

    ReplyDelete
  139. normally, i will receive a call from credit card or insurans offer....

feel lazy to answer the call as well.

    ReplyDelete
  140. i hate to receive those call - mention that i win lucky draw and time to collect blah blah....

    ReplyDelete
  141. normally, they as who am i speak to? i will ask who speaking there first else .... i will ignore them... am i bad hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  142. CH Voon:
no lah, now very professional already.. those marketing will know who they are calling, because they have bought a more complete customer database mah.. hmmm, i hate these calls also lah, sometimes one day a few, even from the same company lor.. so sien lah those call, i'll just let them finish their introduction, if too long till i'm not patient, i'll just interrupt and say "thank you, i'm not interested" and that's it lor..
