do you still remember the cinemas during your childhood?? was talking about this with a friend just now, and he wanted me to blog about this topic today else he wanted to get angry, hahaha!! okay okay, i'll just do it this time for him then.. anything that i have missed out that you wanted to add on?? :p
  • unlike the cineplexes that are all inside shopping malls now, the cinemas back then were all setup in their own building..
  • the cinemas back then have bigger screen, to cater for the two storeys of seats, lower storey for normal fees and the upper storey for special fees..
  • the cinemas back then show only one movie at a time and almost nationwide, unlike the cineplexes now giving you choices that is up to your own preference..
  • unlike the need to check the showtime in cineplexes now, the cinemas back then had fixed schedules for only 4 shows daily (1pm, 3pm, 7pm and 9pm)..
  • more than 20 years ago, the ticket for a movie is less than one fifth you need to pay now, and the front rows were even selling at cheaper rates..
  • the cinemas back then does not have their own food and beverage counters, patrons were allowed to bring in any kind of food they like from outside, no restrictions at all..
  • you are having limited choices of popcorn/softdrinks/hotdogs/chips in cinemas now, this is just so "deprived" from the wide range of kuaci/prawn crackers/chestnuts/fruits/fishballs/burgers/sugarcane/sweet potatoes (and many many more) that we could get in the good old days..
  • the cinemas only provide foldable wooden chairs in those good old days, never as comfortable as the sofas we have now in the cineplexes..

  4. I hated all the cinemas in those early years! Smoking was allowed and many had no air con. I often stepped on bubble gums and rojak wastes strewn on the floor. I lost count on the number of times cockroaches flew onto me plus rats running over my legs. One day I watched Sam Hui's "Aces Go Places" and halfway I sat on the floor. My seat was suddenly broken and everyone around LAUGHED THEIR ASSES OFF AT ME! chibaiii! so malu ! ha ha ha! I swear all the bullshits are true.

  8. Haha, the poor me only been few times to those old day cinemas. No $$ during schooling. It was smelly, dirty and warm. Luckily I've never seen any cockroaches or rats around, or else those people would seen an extra show...running chicken!!! If not mistaken, the last movie was "Leong Juk".

  9. I missed the pop-corn sold in front of Sungai Wang President Cinema. TGV GSC can't never match, not even with the 'new' caramel popcorn!

Well, last time we took bus to cinema. Nowadays most people drive and have to be at the mall real early to make sure you can get a parking lot in time.

All in all i guess we used to appreciate more before as it is a luxury. You can get a DVD to catch up the part where you dozed off.

    Pooi Tyng:
huh?? those are just very common facts about the old cinemas, nothing to be surprised at right?? :)

    TZ:

    Twilight Zone:

oh really you stay in jalan alor?? i think this cathay cinema suffered till quite the last minute, the building was still there for some other business after the cinema, but i think it's demolished and turned into a car park already now??

    BB:
yeah, i think i kena the bubble gum once, could not get rid of that, so angry for that!! and also remember walking on the sticky cement floor, the shoe sole would even make sound, kind of interesting..

    K|E|E|N|Y|E|E:
yeah i bet running chicken is more interesting than rats huh?? haha.. wow, you still remember what movie you watched huh?? i cannot remember anymore, but i remember will go watch movie during CNY with classmates, those time were always stephen chow and jackie chan world.. :p

    Chloe:
i gotta agree being able to go to the cinema was kind of a luxury activity during those good old days, and not to mention the ability to top up the session with popcorn and softdrinks.. but looks like going for a movie is already a very common leisure for people nowadays, see students everywhere queueing up for movie tickets in the cinema?? this is how the society evolved, being richer, haha :p

    Chin Weng
