Stay Healthy - Walk 10,000 Steps A Day
Stay Healthy by Walking 10,000 Steps A Day

i once read somewhere that walking is a good form of exercise.. we all walk everyday no doubt, but how much of walking do you think could classify us as "having exercised"?? it says walk 10,000 steps a day.. this sounds like a big number and who the hell of us counts how many steps we walked in a day?? i never bothered, until i found this apps called "Health" shipped with my phone that logs the number of steps i walked.. i do not know how this "pedometer" works but if that "fruit brand" invested millions and years in the R&D of this thing and finally released it to the users, i better believe its credibility, haha!!

so i have been rather excited about the number of steps i walked lately, i check that apps every now and then and try my best to hit the 10,000 mark everyday.. i know,if i run like the archetypical her on the trails or him and her on the treadmill, i won't have to worry a thing.. but the thing is, i am TOO HEAVY to run (imagine a jello running all wobbly, susah lah kan??), and my ankles hurt if i do!! so i resort to walking, thank god, believe it or not?? it's actually not difficult to log thousands of steps a day, we just do not realise that.. and i am happy that i can maintain a daily average of 10,000 steps, bravo to myself!! so everyone, let's all start to walk a little more everyday, park your car a tad further from the entrance or walk out to tapao instead of driving won't die lah.. :p

    2. Hahaha, it's health, you're correct! Maybe I was miss typed or somehow.

Really? I thought it was came with IOS 8...but I wonder how they calculate the steps ya? Is when you walking while you're holding the phone ya? I saw from somewhere about the band how they calculate the steps were using the waving of hand and the heart bi something. Then so how about the phone ya? Use moving distance?

  2. I’ve seen some kinda device, you attach on your arm, then you run or walk or exercise, it will measure your heart rate, your walking steps, etc.. Is it similar with your post today? I don’t like walking, so I never tried these devices before.. I know lastime Sony hp got this apps la, you attach to your heart or chest, then it will measure everything one, it can detect the steps you walk for the day, etc.. But not accurate one la..

    2. Some colleagues like to park the car in the carpark, then walk up the office using stairs.. 8th floor man !! But they like it that way.. Good exercise, I agree also la.. And then, there’s the fire drill.. Walking down the stairs from 8th floor to lobby, ok la.. Very fast.. Somemore can “pok pek pok pek”, very fast reach lobby liao.. But walking up from lobby to 8th floor, wah, can pengsan.. Usually we will wait for the lift la..

    3. Eh, don’t say you are too heavy to run la.. Everything needs to start somewhere.. I started dieting previously, and the first few days, it was difficult. Very difficult.. But after 3 days, ok wor, don’t feel so sanfu already.. You may feel sanfu and whole body pain when you start to exercise, but after one week, your body already get used to it, then ok liao lor.. You go to fitness centre in shopping malls one rite.. Start “running” by “walking a bit fast”, I think can kua..

You can buy a pedometer or maybe phones that support the function.

  8. Good Morning Bloggers!

I have heard of this "Walk 10,000 Steps Daily" many years ago when my company helped a health care company to launch their pedometer gadgets for this purpose. I do not know how this device captures the number of steps walked but they are very sensitive and accurate. I bought one for my wife who even ran with it on the gym's treadmills. The pedometer could give the accurate steps made. Wonderful technology.

    1. Doctors anywhere would always highly recommend walking or brisk walking as the best form of exercise that would not injure injuries to our limbs. They say it would help our hearts to pump the blood in a safe pace besides regulate the circulation. Honestly, I do not even walk 10K steps a day with the nature of my job and lifestyle, not by choice really. My weight and size speaks for itself after getting ballooned up.

    1. For me, I would consider it an exercise if I do power walk ie walking at a fast pace. I used to do this at a field near the old place I stayed. Every morning, I get out of the house at 6:00am and walk round the field. I used to get a thrill out of walking really fast and overtaking joggers.

      Delete
    2. My walking sessions used to be 20 rounds around the field and after that I felt so good. I lost a lot of weight too at that time. Sadly, even though there is a park near my present home, I can't do that as I have to go to work early.

      Delete
    3. I find that walking is more gentle on our joints and legs compared to jogging or running. It is suitable for me because I have back problems and also twisted my ankle 3 times already.

      Delete
    4. Brisk walking exercise also tones the legs and entire body. Yeah, I used to be so slim. Sobs!

      Delete
    5. As a matter of fact, I can even do brisk walking in my house. I walk round and round in the living room like a mad woman. But it works too. After all, if prisoners of war can manage to exercise in their tiny prison cells, why can't we do it in our living room?

      Delete
    6. But cannot walk too slow also, have to walk faster to reap the benefits. That's why they recommended brisk walking.

  10. Generally from my observation, most Malaysians are lazy to walk. When they drive to the shop, they must find the nearest parking space. If possible, they want to park right in front of the shop or the mall entrance.

    ReplyDelete

    1. At my office area, there is even a shuttle van to ferry people around vicinity. I have no problem walking one big round to the bank or shops. It's a lot faster too than waiting for the van.

      Delete
    2. Yes, malaysians drive too much and that's not healthy too. Try to park the car farther and walk some distance. After all, it's traffic jam here and there. Maybe it's a good idea to park the car at lesser jam area and walk.

  11. We may not realise it, but we walk many steps in a day. I must look fo rth eapp and download it. I am also curious how many steps I take in a day. But that would mean having the phone on me all the time so that it can count my steps.

    3. During my first pregnancy, I used to walk like 3-4 times per week at Lake Garden Taiping. I enjoy the walk and the fresh air and the nice scenery around, best of all, it's good for me and the baby inside, helps in labor too.
Now with the second pregnancy, though I wish to continue walking like the previous pregnancy, I just cannot, cause have to look after the naughty son, I know it's good for him to walk around too, but he is so clingy to me he'll sure ask me to carry him one... So I rather don't go at all, unless got someone else teman me la! If just me and Aden, then better don't go, hehehe!

    4. Yes, walking in the park is relaxing especially during the breezy evening or morning. However, that's not really exercise but de-stress. You needed to walk faster.

  14. I wish that our government would provide more infrastructure for pedestrians. Like overhead bridges and covered sidewalks. I actually live quite near my office but I cannot walk there because it is very dangerous. There are so many cars zooming here and there and no amenities for people to walk safely. But then again, given most Malaysian's attitude towards walking, it might all be wasted.

  15. A I signed the King of Bukit larut 10KM run this 26 April, I forced myself to run on treadmill for 10km everyday until my ankle started to pain a little. Now, I run 10km too, but alternate day. Meaning, I run 10 km one day and do weight training another day. Just to let my foot rest a bit.

Good start SK for the 10k steps per day. Actually I like running more than walking, because running can make sweat more. I guess I will do power walk when my ankle gives up on running. When age is catching, I just need to admit that walking is more suitable for me.

At the mean time, I still run 10km when I step on the treadmill.

    1. Thanks for the link to me for able to run on treadmill. This is something that I feel proud, happy and good. Each time, after running for an hour, I step down from the treadmill, I feel so satisfied that I have accomplished my mission already. Though I walk down with my sore legs and exhausted body, I feel contented as I achieve my target of 10km run. I totally drenched from top to toes. My socks and shoes are wet with my own sweat. I need to mop the treadmill each time after my run, otherwise people may think I pee on treadmill. Hehehe!

      Delete
    2. Walking 10k steps can easily achieve by parking car further in the car park, choosing stair case instead of taking lift. Walking to the user department instead of using phone.

    3. Walking is a good form of Cardio exercise. Walking won't create so much problem to our legs and feet. Walking isn't as tough as running too. When I am too lazy to run, I will walk on treadmill with faster speed and higher incline.

      Delete
    4. Whenever I start my run, i feel myself is so heavy, I feel so difficult to complete my next run and 10km run. After warming up like 10 to 15 minutes, the run becomes much easier. It is the determination and persistence make me run and run.

      Delete
    5. I agree, every exercises need a bit of warm up, then you will find that the exercise is easier to engage in... Just like Yoga, always start with deep breathing and a bit of twisting, then eventually we can move into deeper and harder poses, without hurting our muscles.

      Delete
    6. Good luck Yannie. I am sure you will lose more weight training for the Bukit Larut run.
yes, warm up is important ..... when i stretch , I realised my muscles not so sored.

    7. Yaya, and can exercise longer too if we got do warm up~

  16. Yea, walking is indeed a good exercise everyone can do, no need to learn/practice, no need any props, and it's free!

I remember back in University time, I used to walk a lot, cause I don't have transport back then, and in my gang (I mean the few close one I joined) none of them have own transports too, so we got to rely on our '11 bus' when we wanna go anywhere... Anyway, lucky that hostel is near to the faculty, like just 5-8 minutes walk away, so we walk to and fro everyday, even walk from our hostel to the examination building which is like a 15-20 minutes walk, and our hostel is on a hill some more, so it was like a walk plus hike la, everyday also sweating one, haha!
So may be that's why I started to love walking, and I don't mind to walk a little bit more these days, like I will purposely park my car farther away and walk to the destination. Unless it's raining la!
I see some people very 'pa pai' one, must park nearest to the entrance, walk a bit more also cannot one, hehe.
For me, I rather park farther away, than go round and round searching for a nearer car park.

    1. Recently, a mall at Taiping started to encourage us to use the staircase instead of escalator. They started to draw how much calories we can burn by climbing the staircase, all very colorful cartoons and all.

Hmm, 10,000 steps a day, who will go and count right? But as long as we try to walk as much as we can everyday, consider very good to ourselves already la!

You are too heavy to run?? Haha where got such thing la? Every one can run la! Just depends you want or not only... But actually I read somewhere before that beat walking is better than running/jogging.. Better for our hearts too.

  18. I love this IOS 8 or rather iPhone 6 Heath app. It's a fine app and a good idea to have it on the phone as most of us carried our mobile phone everywhere. We also use the running apps in our mobile to track our runs and with this Health app thingy, it can track how many steps we have taken.
It will be great if Apple can enhance the app further by tracking our walking time, sleeping time, sitting time and so on like those wrist band. And, that's here the Apple Watch comes into picture.
I believe some Android phones like Galaxy S5 also have this feature if I am not wrong.

  19. I also use runkeeper and MyFitnessPal and it easily integrates to this app. Like Lina, I owned a Polar Loop device, which is wrist band that tracks my steps, calories burnt, sleeping , walking, standing and running time. It also integrates to this app.
My fitness app helps to track how much calories I have took in while the Polar Loop app minus off the calories intake, which acts like Health. Initally I used Health but I find it more accurate to use Polar Loop to track as I wore it almost 24 hours.

  20. Yeah, when I run, I can easily hit 10K+ or sometimes, 20K+. Of course, we cannot run daily as it will hurts our knees while our calf and thigh muscles will also be aching. I usually took two day off from running to recuperate though its better to run on alternate days but due to my lifestyle, I can't help it ...hahha... Weekends are mostly for the family.

    1. I agree with you Chris. I used to run daily for 9km an hour. I set that as my daily goal. Sometimes I ran for 1.5 hours to achieve longer distance like 12km. I was trying so hard until I hurt my ankle. I limped for more than a month. Now, I try to "sayang" my leg a bit. I do it slow like about 8km for an hour then, slow jog 2km another 10 minutes to complete my whole 10km run. I run alternate day now. I slot in strength training and swimming in between to let my feet rest.
So far, my ankle tendonitis is under control. Thank Goodness.

    2. Yannie - There were days when my calf muscles was so painful that I cannot run ..ahahah.. Yeah, need rest but I can;t help it. Due to my lifestyle, I needed to run daily as I will be busy during weekends.

      Delete
    3. As for me, weekend, I went to gym twice. Morning run for an hour on treadmill, evening, I go again to lift weight for another hour.

Whenever my ankle gives me sign of pain, I will stop and change to walk. Walking 10 km is taking longer time than running 10 km. If I have enough time to spare, I don't mind walking 10,000 steps like SK.

      Delete
    4. Yannie - wow..you are really active. I don't have the luxury of time during weekend except an evening jog on Sundays. Usually, I go gym or run from Mon-Thurs. But then as I mentioned before, it hurts my cals muscles and sometimes I ended up cannot run especially on Wed and Thurs.

  21. I actually got motivated to run after I purchase the Polar Loop. Thus, I guess you are motivated now by this app. Before that, I only ran 2km+ after my gym workout. The reason I am motivated is because I wanted to achieve the goal the app set for me daily. hahaha.. It feels good to reach 100% or more of my daily goal.
Else, I will still be running 2km daily and forgot about longer distance runs.

  22. BTW, I think our Malaysian lifestyle is not as healthy compared to other countries. In Singapore, due to the fact that a car here can buy a property in Malaysia, most folk took public transports. This also means a lot of walking from MRT to shuttle bus or from bus stops to office or home.
I also heard that in other countries, they are not so pamper and walk a lot. I believe you know some folks in Japan cycle to work too.
Well, I guess we have to hit the gym more in Malaysia. When I am home in JB, my steps barely reached 5K...hahahaha...

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't think you are too heavy to run la... there is no such thing. Maybe your joints are weak or you needed to strengthen your leg muscles. Do some workouts on the legs. Wear a knee band if needed when you run.
I have a friend who is very obese but he managed to run 5Km-7KM on alternate days for the past few months.

    ReplyDelete
  24. With the advent of these pedometers as well as selling at affordable price, there seems lots of folks are wearing, at least over here in SG. The Xioami band only sold at S$19.90. hahha...
And, with these devices, more and more people are getting active. I saw a lot of folks running at night in SG here.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think hitting 10K is not difficult, like you said. Yeah, instead of pampering yourself by parking your car near to your destination, park it further away where you may find a cheaper parking spot too.
My office is two bus stops away from the MRT and usually walked to the station unless I am in a rush. It's almost a 1KM walk and that increases my steps.
If you involved in sporting activities, it's even easier to achieve the 10K goal, but then in some sports you cannot carried your phone around like racquet sports. You may want to invest in a wrist band.

  26. Somehow, this app is still very basic now since it is the first version. I really hope they provide more stats in later versions. Currently, it is more of a dashboard to show the no. of steps as well as a hub to integrate third party apps. I am sure the fruit company will do more to enhance it, as well as introduce related devices like heart monitoring or maybe they put all in the Watch... hahaha...
The Watch will cost me a fortune, I guess I stick with my wrist band for now.

  28. Received a video from a friend that holding on to your buttocks with two hands while walking up stairs will give you more umph. Yet to try that one day.

  29. Bravo! Good for you! To be able to achieve 10,000 steps a day, I am also an advocate of walking since I don't like to exercise any other way. I walk the stairs at LRT station instead of taking the escalator. I own a few pedometers but once the batteries ran out, I got too lazy to change the batteries so they are lying around unused. I guess the fruit company coming up with this app to count walking steps is very good since many people carry a fruit phone everywhere so they can count their steps without needing to buy a pedometer like I did. Good job!

  31. But for me, I think more important is not to sit down too long. So I try to stand up and walk around every 15 minutes if I am sitting down.

  32. If you walk more, then it's also likely you are sitting down less, so that's good :)

  33. Oh so you don't go running? Too heavy to run? Haha

  34. OK lah if don't run, then walk also OK. Running has its pros and cons. I don't run for long distances because it's kinda hurt my legs. But I do run for short intervals, or I should say I sprint for a while, then walk for a while, then sprint again and repeat the cycle. That's my usual exercise :)

  37. Is good to walk a bit when we have been sitting for a long time. I don't mind parking my car a little far away so that I get to walk a distance. This way of walking is considered exercise for me too.

    1. Same here, I will park my car farther away from the destination and consider the walking as exercise... Of course sometimes depends on situations, like if it's raining then cannot already la!

  38. Maybe for a start, you can consider training for a 5k or 10k run event. This will help or rather motivate you to run more and thus, increase your steps. Else, I still find it not easy to walk more daily to achieve the goal. I barely reach 5000 steps when I'm in Malaysia during the weekends.
