i guess i have already passed that stage that i must take photos of every single food laid in front of me.. when i remember Penang is a heaven for local street food, and that many bloggers love to see food posts (in the common flat layout), and in order i am not "complained" for not writing a food post for my Penang trip, haha!! hence, i searched for the food photos i reminded myself to take.. okay, here are what i have, *paiseh*.. but i have to say i did enjoy the food very much, so enjoyed that my camera may not "eat" before me, hahaha!! hope you enjoy reading too.. :p
we went to the public market at Air Itam (photo above) in the morning.. i've heard a lot about this place, but only realized it is surrounded by mountains.. beautiful when you ignore the messy traffic in that area but look far at the green mountains behind.. :p
#1.. we went there for this asam laksa which is one thing you should not miss, a lot milder compared to the very spicy and sour version we have here in KL.. just like the people too?? hahaha!! oh, i LOVE the iced nutmeg juice (no photo though)..
#2.. we then went nearby for this very interesting curry noodles, i guess this must be the legendary Penang White Curry huh?? comes with cuttlefish and blood pudding, and guess how this is sold by two old sisters boss?? move your cursor over the photo.. :)
#3.. no seat at the curry stall and we were asked to sit at the cheong fun stall opposite.. and that was why this plate of cheong fun with prawn paste was on our table!! i think the prawn paste was very nice, but too bad, only in Penang..
#4.. we walked a bit in the market and then hopped onto the car.. Lorong Selamat next for this famous char koay teow.. okay, RM9(!!) with three huge prawns.. but sorry, my comment is: overpriced and overrated, period.. i also heard that if you order using authentic Penang Hokkien, you will only have to pay RM7, this is unfair!!
#5.. one of the side dishes to go with our char koay teow (did not take photos of the rojak buah and sotong kangkung), this oh-chien was indeed a lot nicer!! i like the way they cooked it slightly burnt and crispy outside but soft and a little chewy inside..
#6.. BONUS: this was the prawn noodles we had a day before next to our hotel.. too bad, we were too early and many ingredients like roast pork, kangkung and beansprouts were not ready, hence this plain looking bowl.. nevertheless, it tasted good!! only to realize later this is the famous Green House Prawn Mee at Jalan Burma..
i know you sure exclaimed that i ate a lot after reading this post, haha!! but the truth is, food in Penang are not in big portion, furthermore many things we ordered were for sharing only, hence we actually didn't overeat.. just that we were too old to stuff in too much of food~~ :D
First off topic a bit, I like the layout today, I mean the switching languge one, so special!!
Skip all first, every time talk about Penang food, the first came to my mind is the char koay teow, don't know why just have the thought that Penang one is nicer!!
#1 Then I like KL version more, like those spicy spicy one, eat until tears drop that one then only shiok, hahaha!! (feel like am I torturing myself ya!!)
Morning everyone.. Ohh, so we are still in Pg? Good, then I know we should talk about food sooner or later, and it’s today! Haha, then good lor, at least got stuffs to write about.. Yeah, before humans eat, the camera eats first, I think it’s very common la nowadays.. Lastime leh, when we take pictures of the food, we feel paiseh people around us will look at us with one kind face, but now, not anymore lor.. Snap pictures first, “choy lei tit soh” (peduli apa?), teehee..
#1 – Yummzzz, asam laksa.. I see loads of (minced) fish on top.. Sardine or ikan kembung? Whatever is it, it sure taste yummy.. But I don’t like my laksa with “har kou”, but mum loves it.. But usually I will omit it la.. Wow I’m drooling over your bowl of laksa la, so loaded with fish and the gravy is so thick.. Was is “seng”? (fishy)
#2 – Ahhh, curry mee.. When I see pig blood on top, I know it’s from Pg already.. Now ahh, very susah to find curry mee topped with pig blood liao.. Even in chap farn stalls, it’s very hard to find pig blood.. Lastime they always have pig blood fried with taupok and “kau choi”, but now, wana find and eat again also very susah lor..
#3 – CCF, ermm, not a fan, but I do and still like to eat KL ccf more.. I like the curry gravy/soup banjir my ccf over here, but some sellers are not willing to give extra gravy/soup.. But I always try my luck and ask for more soup la.. Pg ccf, not very like, coz they serve it with “har kou” also, just “har kou” and nothing else, yes?
#4 – Everybody’s favourite! Who doesn’t like ckt? I really don’t know anyone who doesn’t like ckt leh.. Even health freaks would like to have ckt occasionally la, ngam mou.. As usual, I love mine with extra (raw) cockles and additional telur mata.. More noodles, less kuey teow, add cockles and “oi lat” (pedas).. Yummzzz… You are really making me hungry early morning leh..
#5 – OMG !!! Oh-chien! My favourite too! I could only eat this in the food court now.. Not always.. I miss this and I can finish the whole thing leh.. Believe it or not, I could stuff the whole thing into my big fat mouth! I prefer if they don’t break it into pieces/chunks, and just serve it as a whole ommelete..
#6 – Har mein! Sluurrrppp ! Look at the soup/broth! Looks like very sweet leh, with all the prawn shells and all.. I don’t mind my noodles to be oily (and red), to be honest.. Coz I feel those noodles with oil (red colour) baru syiok and ada uuummpphh !!!
yeah really got a lot of nice food leh.. but i think still got things that we missed out, because we just spent two days there only, actually to be exact we arrived in Penang in the afternoon and the next day after lunch we left lu.. i remember i didn't have cendul, OMG, how could i??
Not many locals like the Air Itam laksa anymore, they say only the foreigners (a.k.a people like you and me) will flock there to do the touristy thing.. Actually not me lah, I don't like laksa at all LOL! You are right to feel that the Lorong Selamat CKT is overrated! Unfair plus rude plus not really that super delicious, sorry man, not for me..
oh yeah, i didn't find the Lorong Selamat CKT that nice at all.. overrated and definitely overpriced!! i didn't make the order so i didn't know how rude she is, hehehehehe~~
I love asam laksa! Aiyo.. I can just imagine the sourish taste and I must have prawn paste (hae koh) when eating it. When I eat a good asam laksa, I will drink the gravy right to the last drop! I have heard about the nutmeg juice. Apparently it is very refreshing. Something that I hope to try one day.
the Penang one is different from the KL ones.. Penang fish is crushed, KL fish is chunky.. Penang is mild, KL is stronger in taste.. and the nutmeg juice, i so like it!!!
Penang white curry? I have not heard of this before (so jakun). Eeeks...got blood pudding! I don't like it. The last time I tasted blood pudding made from chicken blood was when I was a kid. Super yucks for me. Don't know if I still feel that way if I tasted it now. I don't mind finding out :)
PH, what about those ready packed Penang white curry noodles sell in market? Looks like instant noodles one. Very famous lately.
Blood pudding I also don't like, but don't mind to have it once a while, 'pou hiut' ma (补血)。 Ladies need it ;) But I must eat it with some sauce, if eat it on its own sure taste gerli.
oh, there was once this Penang White Curry instant noodles was so hot in the market, everyone is fighting to buy and always they do not have enough supply for the demand.. guess the heat is over now..
I am looking at the photo of the stall. The ladies are sitting down while serving teh customers? I see small plastic stools and do customers sit there to eat? Must be uncomfortable.
The CKT is so expensive! It looks good but too bad that it is overpriced and overrated. And so unfair that they discriminate the customers. But is this stall still very laku in spite of all this?
Ah, besides asam laksa, I love rojak buah and sotong kangkung! But these two dishes are not very photogenic hah..hah...so just as well you did not take photo because all we would see is black or brown gravy.
oh yeah.. their rojak buah is so nice with the prawn paste leh.. very thick and gluey type of prawn paste, i so like it!!! errr, forgotten to take photos lah, but i think i can make them look quite decent in the photo, hahaha!!
I also like oh chien. But it must be proper oh chien with good ingredients because some stalls add a lot of flour. It has been ages since I ate oh chien.
Prawn noodles are also very nice but not one of my favourites. I love the sambal that comes with the noodles. Actually hor, I also noticed that as I grow older, I can't eat as much as I did before. I think the system is slowing down and not able to process more food hah..hah...
Hmm, my parents also same... Now they eat less already, though facing with their favorite food, I guess the 'wai' (胃) becomes smaller when we grow older, cannot put too much food inside already, hehe. Actually not a bad thing also la, eat lesser can avoid from having big belly ma! (tai tou lam)
When I write this comment, I am at the cool lounge Golden Sand hotel. We have checked out, but still have some time before dinner, I let the girls play games via the PC provided here. I saw available PC next my girls, bla, bla.... That's why I m here typing this.
We are here in Penang 2 days ago. Just to enjoy the hotel resort, the pool, the beach, the sand, the water sport and the adventure zone. I got foot and body massage everyday. It is indeed a good holiday for JAMY. We didn't drive down to Penang town at all. No intention for food hunting and shopping, we are here for the relax, rest and easy.
Penang is a food heaven, but you must know where to find the right one.
While typing this, Jin Jin rushes me to off and go now. Will come back here again on weekend.
Hawker food is always Yannie's favorite. Didn't you have some Ice Kacang, Chendol, Rojak, Pasembur and popiah this round. Too many to eat, but tummy too small, right?
Glad to know that you guys have fun Yannie, I can see going on vacation during school holidays is something your family will do ;) Good la, can de-stress and at the same time the kids can have fun too!
Hmm those food you mentioned, easily available at Taiping la right? Too bad lo SK din't come to Taiping else we can belanja him geh..... Wakakaka!
yeah, so much of nice food to eat in Penang, but we just stayed there for a brief 2D1N only.. too many food too little time (as well as stomach space), hehehehe!!!
Hayley is right. I seldom go to Penang for food hunting, perhaps those food can be found easily in Taiping. Taste wise, if not better, it is equally good as Penang, I would say so. Therefore, I seldom go food hunting in Penang. In fact, the same type of hawker food, we can have it cheaper in Taiping than Penang. No offend ya!
Taiping is between the two food paradise - Ipoh and Penang!! maybe Taiping blends in the essence of both places, hence the food there is even nicer!!! :D
Aha! I know this Assam Laksa that sells beside the drain by the market. When they see me, sure got extra lius. I know the in-laws and son of the boss who is always there even on CNY!!! When I was clubbing during my early 20s, I was hanging out with their male siblings who are scary people! One taught me to smoke substance to get 'high' and no turning back with many more dragons. Once a year the boss will go to Ha'adyai with his friends with his wife's blessings!! I never seen such a sporting wife.. Oh, why am I spilling beans here. LOL
Curry Mee is Penang's speciality too and many would eat at the shop in town area, somewhere off Anson Road. I don't mind this one at Air Itam as the food are almost good everywhere to me. I am no longer fussy like when I used to live there. I have also stopped eating the pig blood after hearing how it was made these days.
If you want the same black sauce Chee Cheong Fun, you can try any Lorong Seratus Tahun cafes in KL and they taste as good to me. There is one at the below-front of Scotts Garden and another at SS2 next to the Bak Kwa Shop.
Ooo la la!!! I love to eat Char Koay Teow always as it makes me happy! In Penang, you can try the Sister's Stall along Macalister Road which is a fierce competitor to the 2 stalls along Lorong Selamat. This one could see long long long queues sometimes.
Hey, we seem to have same taste buds and liking! I also love O-Chien and do not have any particular favourite stalls as many fry their own styles. Some are dry like grass and some are wet like shit but nice! I avoided this O-Chien for a long time after the outbreak of Hepatitis in the island which the clams and oysters were blamed.
In Penang, you need to call this Hokkien Mee otherwise they won't serve you dei. The best ones in KL are sold in Little Penang and a coffee shop inside Taman Tun. Ask any Penang kia, they know where!
yeah, i gotta admit i really enjoyed the food in Penang.. not only nice but also not expensive (of course besides that Lorong Selamat CKT).. errr, i don't find Little Penang nice actually, gotta say it's all depend on individual preference and taste.. for hawker food, i always prefer to go to those rundown hawker stalls, instead of those pricey ones sold at chains inside shopping malls - which are probably cooked by "trained foreign professionals" only..
waahhhhh... like LINA!! Lau hau sui... I nearly need a bib going through the picture one by one... OK, just exaggerating...hahaha... I just came back from my dinner and I am still very full... very fortunately! Penang.. another food paradise... any angle also can see food one!
Thanks for fulfilling the requests of your readers by showing us the food photos. Look like you managed to eat all of Penang Famous food - assam laksa, white curry mee, ckt, oh chien, ccf, penang hokkien mee.
I like the oh chien the most. How much was that plate? I think I only get to eat oh chien here in Pavilion and Lot 10 Hutong food court but it costs more than RM13 per plate if I am not mistaken.
hahaha, i guess if i am not writing about the Penang food, i will be "belasah" by the readers, haha.. hmmm, i think depends on where you go, i think oh-chien is still quite common in KL..
hehehe, i seldom order oh-chien but i think i've seen Small Kucing posted about oh-chien quite a number of times leh, hence that impression, hihihihi ^^
Not portion small, is because you guys already biasa with big portion serve in KL, hehe! That's what I think when I eat at hawker centers around KL, big bowl but mostly not so good only. Over here at the Northern area, portion is memang like this, but taste good! ;)
Actually, I'm glad about the ruling on locals only in preparing authentic food. Look at how good food is being 'distorted' here in the city. I think real food can only be sampled in small towns not in KL.
Recalled one incident at Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow (CKT). A guy sitting next table refused to accept the CKT at RM7 (that was few years ago) said he got no money to pay & 'demanded' for the cheapest & simple CKT without whatever big prawns. Phew salute this great guy to voice out & protest.
wah, this guy really brave to voice out! normally the CKT seller have this motto "take or no take", yea they are arrogant! if u want to eat their CKT either u pay full amount or leave for others. After all, their CKT biz is good and tonnes of ppl wanting to try. Less one customer doesn't affect his biz! So did the seller obey with his request?
oh, i also do not like the prawn paste with my asam laksa, it makes the bowl of soup too sweet for my liking.. i always ask not to have it.. but friend ordered for us, so i'll just enjoy as it is..
hmmm, i like that guy Bananaz mentioned!! he is cool, he rocks!!! :D
Nux V, ya the CKT seller took back the plate full of big prawns, but we left the place before the new basic plate of CKT arrived coz thinking it may not be that 'Selamat' after all, if things go wrong with flying plates and chopsticks haha.
if i knew it's RM9 because of the prawns, i would actually want a plate with NO PRAWNS but then our Penang friend has already ordered so we just makan..
Pasar awam Air Itam, never heard before! I know Air Itam but never been there, I think as 'tourist' we won't purposely go there to hunt for food or walk around, probably because it's a small place and we need local people to bring us there cause they know what is famous ma! The first photo is nice, weather seems a bit cloudy though.. But gives me a feeling like Cameron Highland! Cloudy and always can see mountains one.
Asam laksa looks appetizing, lots of 渣 on top but I like! So that I won't feel like I am drinking the soup only.. If you know what I mean, hehe! Nutmeg juice is good, I realize drinks like this only serve in small town, or kampung area/新村, some more is pure and home made one. Those we see at market, bottled/canned, sure got added sugars and extra.
Wah that curry noodles!! Indeed special to me, got cuttlefish! And the stall is so old school! Macam those we see in Thailand, small, with just the cloth on top, and we need to bend down to order/eat, must be a very good experience!
As for cheong fun, hmm, nothing special to me, looks like what we have here in Taiping :p But for me I actually prefer Hong Kong styled cheong fun! With fillings inside one.
Lorong Selamat CKT, hmm, that's exactly what I heard, beginning memang famous but slowly, became 'commercialized' and now overpriced! I guess only tourists will go and eat lo, local sure won't, cause they sure know CKT at other places which is nicer. Come Taiping la, I assure you our CKT is better than Lorong Selamat one, hehe (macam la doing commercial xD), and you can have two plates with RM 9! Huh got such thing? Order with Penang Hokkien got discount? Mana boleh?? Oo chien, I like! Here we have nice oo chien too! And both CKT and oo chien are available under one roof, save energy save petrol, haha! We called cashier market (chai chi), with a famous stall selling local kuih, and ice kacang 雪山!
The prawn noodles really a bit plain, but then I guess it's all about the soup la, if the soup is good then put anything also good one ;) Erm is that 皮蛋 in the bowl? Looks like 皮蛋 to me, but seldom see prawn noodles got 皮蛋 one wo!
yeah, the asam laksa is different from the KL version.. the fish is crushed instead of chunky, the soup taste milder than the KL strong flavor.. and this CCF, i actually find the CCF so-so lah but the prawn paste is really good, that makes the whole thing taste good lor..
errr, the Lorong Selamat CKT, that was my very first time and would be the very last time also lah.. two word, overrated and overpriced.. and the prawn noodles, at first i also thought it's 皮蛋 leh, so i was so excited.. only when served that i realized it's those 鹵蛋 only leh.. but still nice lah..
good SK....guai guai snap photo ah/.... your friends ghot think u crazy or not snapping photos of food LOL.
Ah...i missed the food there. The asam laksa is to die for...hmm....tengah sore throat also die die wanna eat there. Bumped into the Wolf Gang some more last time
Over there also my first time learn about Keuh Chap.
yalah, i think KL people not going to Penang that often, so even not feeling well also cannot miss the food there!! eat first and care later lah, hahahaha~~ :D
am not sure about the laksa with the "blood" . I dont eat thhat but Kaldip will eat that. For me CKT, Asam laksa and the Prawn mee(the one with cili one not the blakc hokkkien mee) Darn it really confuse how to call it...why la KL and Penang have opposite name for two type of food. Pengsan
i also don't eat the blood pudding but then it's okay just leave it aside, the curry is still nice leh.. but nowadays the Penang people also understand when we call that prawn mee lah, but then they will know we are not Penang people lor~~
Nugmeg juice? Hmmm never heard of it yet. LOL. But I dun like the taste of that fruit. It got a kind of smell. Last time my aunt they all went Penang buy back and gave us. Plus the balm. We tarak use. Wasted.
First off topic a bit, I like the layout today, I mean the switching languge one, so special!!

But that was my memories don't know how many years ago, that time I went Penang was in a rush, didn't have much time to try out the food as well!!
DeleteActually from what you guys have eat aren't that much la, all and all just want the taste only right, hehe!! BRB
#1 Then I like KL version more, like those spicy spicy one, eat until tears drop that one then only shiok, hahaha!! (feel like am I torturing myself ya!!)
Deleteyeah, i think go Penang must eat the CKT and laksa, guess those are what Penang is famous for huh?? :p

ReplyDeletewhat is FKT?? sounds like vulgar word~~ :D

DeleteThat's what we always did. Ordered lots of variety to share and it's better this way. I love food and I will still take photos of food.
ReplyDeleteoh yeah.. more people then can order more so everyone can taste a bit of everything :)
DeleteI love to have the asam laksa! The best laksa can only be found in Penang , air itam. so far , no complain with it.
ReplyDeleteyeah, that was why our friend brought us there to makan - but he didn't makan, he just looked at us makan!! hahahaha~~
DeleteHahah...so today food post ? Are you suffering from writers block ?
ReplyDeleteerrr, not really, but i think i just have to write about food for this Penang trip :D
DeletePenang is an island for foodies, besides the nice beach and places. I like the char kway teow too as well as chendol.
ReplyDeleteThe prawn noodles also nice! Too bad, it's too far for me !
Where got far la! Now you are holidaying at Perak ma, go Penang very near only!!
Deleteaiyah, too bad, i didn't try the cendul there.. no time and also no more stomach space, hahaha!!
DeleteSo, did you put on any weights from your visit to Penang ? Lol
ReplyDeleteHaha I think got a little bit la SK, right? But never mind la, I think with just a few trips to the gym already can burn off those extra calories.
Deleteerrr, i didn't know woh.. i am one who rarely step onto the weighing machine :D
DeleteOf course we expect food pictures if you are in Penang. If not I will sure make noise why got no food photos when you are in makan paradise.
ReplyDeletehahaha.. and this post is especially for you PH~~ :p
DeleteI love asam laksa! Aiyo.. I can just imagine the sourish taste and I must have prawn paste (hae koh) when eating it. When I eat a good asam laksa, I will drink the gravy right to the last drop! ReplyDeleteerrr, i will not ask for more lah, i trust to boss to give just the right amount.. too little or too much may not be nice also..
DeleteThe CKT is so expensive! It looks good but too bad that it is overpriced and overrated. And so unfair that they discriminate the customers. But is this stall still very laku in spite of all this?

DeleteAh, besides asam laksa, I love rojak buah and sotong kangkung! But these two dishes are not very photogenic hah..hah...so just as well you did not take photo because all we would see is black or brown gravy.

DeleteGood evening bloggers! This post sure makes me sulk to see my hometown's favourite food. SK is good in stirring my emotions!! Kaneeneh SK Thambee dei.
ReplyDeleteAha! LOL
DeleteCurry Mee is Penang's speciality too and many would eat at the shop in town area, somewhere off Anson Road. I don't mind this one at Air Itam as the food are almost good everywhere to me. I am no longer fussy like when I used to live there. I have also stopped eating the pig blood after hearing how it was made these days.
DeleteIf you want the same black sauce Chee Cheong Fun, you can try any Lorong Seratus Tahun cafes in KL and they taste as good to me. There is one at the below-front of Scotts Garden and another at SS2 next to the Bak Kwa Shop.
DeleteOoo la la!!! I love to eat Char Koay Teow always as it makes me happy! In Penang, you can try the Sister's Stall along Macalister Road which is a fierce competitor to the 2 stalls along Lorong Selamat. This one could see long long long queues sometimes.
DeleteHey, we seem to have same taste buds and liking! I also love O-Chien and do not have any particular favourite stalls as many fry their own styles. Some are dry like grass and some are wet like shit but nice! I avoided this O-Chien for a long time after the outbreak of Hepatitis in the island which the clams and oysters were blamed.
DeleteIn Penang, you need to call this Hokkien Mee otherwise they won't serve you dei. The best ones in KL are sold in Little Penang and a coffee shop inside Taman Tun. Ask any Penang kia, they know where!
DeleteLorong seratus food is very expensive! You can get the prawn paste ccf at O & S coffee shop at Paramount PJ. RM2 only.
Deleteyeah, i gotta admit i really enjoyed the food in Penang.. not only nice but also not expensive (of course besides that Lorong Selamat CKT).. errr, i don't find Little Penang nice actually, gotta say it's all depend on individual preference and taste.. for hawker food, i always prefer to go to those rundown hawker stalls, instead of those pricey ones sold at chains inside shopping malls - which are probably cooked by "trained foreign professionals" only..
DeleteGo to Penang, if don't pig out, feels like not exploring Penang properly, right?
ReplyDeleteso must eat like a pig there?? :D
DeleteWahhhhh! The curry noodles vendor so very old-school one kah?
ReplyDeleteerrr, and also two very OLD women, hahaha~~
Deletewaahhhhh... like LINA!! Lau hau sui... I nearly need a bib going through the picture one by one... OK, just exaggerating...hahaha... I just came back from my dinner and I am still very full... very fortunately! Penang.. another food paradise... any angle also can see food one!
ReplyDeleteClaire ni also very familiar with Penang la! Since you travel there frequently!
DeleteI agree, Penang is a food paradise!
actually there is one good question to ask this Ipoh Food Mayor.. between food in Ipoh and Penang, which one do you think is better?? hahahaha~~ :D
DeleteThanks for fulfilling the requests of your readers by showing us the food photos. Look like you managed to eat all of Penang Famous food - assam laksa, white curry mee, ckt, oh chien, ccf, penang hokkien mee.
ReplyDeleteI like the oh chien the most. How much was that plate? I think I only get to eat oh chien here in Pavilion and Lot 10 Hutong food court but it costs more than RM13 per plate if I am not mistaken.
May be oo chien not so 'heng' in KL?
DeleteRM 13 is quite pricey, here less than RM 10, but got big and small size one, hehe.
hahaha, i guess if i am not writing about the Penang food, i will be "belasah" by the readers, haha.. hmmm, i think depends on where you go, i think oh-chien is still quite common in KL..
DeleteMay I know where in KL to get decently priced tasty oh chien? I only know food court stalls but not any hawker stalls in KL.
Deletehehehe, i seldom order oh-chien but i think i've seen Small Kucing posted about oh-chien quite a number of times leh, hence that impression, hihihihi ^^
DeleteI just came back from Penang and very true that the food portion is very small.
ReplyDeleteNot portion small, is because you guys already biasa with big portion serve in KL, hehe! That's what I think when I eat at hawker centers around KL, big bowl but mostly not so good only.
DeleteOver here at the Northern area, portion is memang like this, but taste good! ;)
hmmm, so basically the people in the north eat lesser and the people in the south eat more?? hahaha.. :D
Deleteprawn noodle got roast pork? never seen this version before...
ReplyDeleteYa, usually just pork fillets but not roasted one. Or may be SK sendiri 'ka liu' inside? Hehehe...
Deleteyes, this is what makes them special mah..
DeleteActually, I'm glad about the ruling on locals only in preparing authentic food. Look at how good food is being 'distorted' here in the city. I think real food can only be sampled in small towns not in KL.
ReplyDeleteI actually prefer sour Asam Laksa rather than the sweeter version - that's why I skip the prawn sauce.
DeletePrice difference for visitors vis-a-vis locals is horrendous! At RM7 it's already high even by KL standards - roadside stall price, I mean. No?
Recalled one incident at Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow (CKT). A guy sitting next table refused to accept the CKT at RM7 (that was few years ago) said he got no money to pay & 'demanded' for the cheapest & simple CKT without whatever big prawns. Phew salute this great guy to voice out & protest.
Deletewah, this guy really brave to voice out! normally the CKT seller have this motto "take or no take", yea they are arrogant! if u want to eat their CKT either u pay full amount or leave for others. After all, their CKT biz is good and tonnes of ppl wanting to try. Less one customer doesn't affect his biz! So did the seller obey with his request?
Deleteoh, i also do not like the prawn paste with my asam laksa, it makes the bowl of soup too sweet for my liking.. i always ask not to have it.. but friend ordered for us, so i'll just enjoy as it is..
Deletehmmm, i like that guy Bananaz mentioned!! he is cool, he rocks!!! :D
Nux V, ya the CKT seller took back the plate full of big prawns, but we left the place before the new basic plate of CKT arrived coz thinking it may not be that 'Selamat' after all, if things go wrong with flying plates and chopsticks haha.
Deleteif i knew it's RM9 because of the prawns, i would actually want a plate with NO PRAWNS but then our Penang friend has already ordered so we just makan..
Delete阿三啦沙,睇到都流口水。不過我一向都唔會影食物,因爲到呢一刻依然討厭食嘢。
ReplyDelete我會影嚟"旁身".. 有時冇嘢寫就摷返啲食物照救急.. :D
DeletePasar awam Air Itam, never heard before! I know Air Itam but never been there, I think as 'tourist' we won't purposely go there to hunt for food or walk around, probably because it's a small place and we need local people to bring us there cause they know what is famous ma!
ReplyDeleteThe first photo is nice, weather seems a bit cloudy though..
DeleteAs for cheong fun, hmm, nothing special to me, looks like what we have here in Taiping :p But for me I actually prefer Hong Kong styled cheong fun!
The prawn noodles really a bit plain, but then I guess it's all about the soup la, if the soup is good then put anything also good one ;)
Erm is that 皮蛋 in the bowl? Looks like 皮蛋 to me, but seldom see prawn noodles got 皮蛋 one wo!
yeah, the asam laksa is different from the KL version.. the fish is crushed instead of chunky, the soup taste milder than the KL strong flavor.. and this CCF, i actually find the CCF so-so lah but the prawn paste is really good, that makes the whole thing taste good lor..
Deleteerrr, the Lorong Selamat CKT, that was my very first time and would be the very last time also lah.. two word, overrated and overpriced.. and the prawn noodles, at first i also thought it's 皮蛋 leh, so i was so excited.. only when served that i realized it's those 鹵蛋 only leh.. but still nice lah..
我应该有量世纪没去过Penang了。。。 *哭奔*
ReplyDelete你贏!!! hahahaha~~ :D
Deletegood SK....guai guai snap photo ah/.... your friends ghot think u crazy or not snapping photos of food LOL.
ReplyDeleteAh...i missed the food there.
Deleteam not sure about the laksa with the "blood" . I dont eat thhat but Kaldip will eat that. For me CKT, Asam laksa and the Prawn mee(the one with cili one not the blakc hokkkien mee) Darn it really confuse how to call it...why la KL and Penang have opposite name for two type of food. Pengsan
ReplyDeletei also don't eat the blood pudding but then it's okay just leave it aside, the curry is still nice leh.. but nowadays the Penang people also understand when we call that prawn mee lah, but then they will know we are not Penang people lor~~
DeleteNugmeg juice? Hmmm never heard of it yet. LOL. But I dun like the taste of that fruit. It got a kind of smell. Last time my aunt they all went Penang buy back and gave us. Plus the balm. We tarak use. Wasted.
ReplyDeleteerrr, actually nice woh, i like the smell and taste of nutmeg leh, hehehe!!
