The China House @ Lebuh Pantai, Penang
there is one thing i love about Penang, everywhere i go in Georgetown, i can still see old buildings very well preserved and maintained, and many are converted for commercial use.. so unlike her big brother KL, where it seems all old buildings must be demolished to give way to modern structures (=.=").. after a brief walk at Armenian Street that night , we hopped over to this place called ChinaHouse for a drink.. nope, it's not a place to house just the Chinese but a place with restaurant, bar, art centre etc under one roof, one roof that links two pre-war colonial house.. i LIKE this "retro contemporary" place, sounds contradicting?? but that's what it makes me feel!! :p

  1. That's interesting! A marriage of the old and new. I need to see it in person to really appreciate the fusion of old world and new world. Must get my partner to take me here when we go to Penang!

    1. oh yeah, it's a very long place because it links two narrow buildings back-to-back.. this courtyard really gave me a surprise..

  4. But I think what will really pull me like a magnet would be that long table full of baked goodies! I will have a tough time walking away without sampling at least four of the pastries hah..hah...

  5. Penang proves to us that the old and the new can co-exist. Preserving history while breathing in new life. I really admire that.

  6. Like so 怀旧 this restaurant!! I also agree that, instead of demolish the old one, they should keep it and make for other use of purpose to keep the "history" of it, now many place if want to see back just only can go museum to see or maybe not even museum, just look up online google!! (Anyway be back soon, so so much work to do, haven't finish tah~~~)

    1. indeed, and also because they converted two old buildings and link them back-to-back, i would say it's a very brilliant idea cos they didn't really touch up much but maintain the original structure.. like that even nicer with the classic feel..

    2. Feel like Melacca also, but Melacca got a lot of place also just kept there for good but never do anything about it, feel like kind of waste duh!

  10. Penang is becoming like singapore when you reminds me of reusing the old buildings for commercial purposes. I like these buildings too which they renovated it and decor it nicely. It also reminds me of the shop house that I stayed when I was a kid.

  14. Good Morning Bloggers!

I went there when it was newly opened. My friend from London brought me there. Of course she was a Penang born lass who went on to win Miss Malaysia in the 80s and still hogs the limelight as an auntie when she's in town. All the pub and cafe owners are often her friends, so I just tumpang the lights on her! LMAO!!!

  23. Yes I agree, many buildings in Penang still maintained well, 很有古早味! I think the local authority made a great effort in maintaining this thing, they want to continue 发展 but won't sacrifice the beautiful old buildings and monuments.
Hmm Taiping also got, come drop by next time and you'll see, I guess many are those you won't get to see at big busy city like KL ;)

Hmm this ChinaHouse is actually very famous hor? People from far or near also know about it, I purposely went there to dine after hearing my friend who gave positive feedback about this cafe, she stays at Taiping but purposely drive all the way there to eat, more than once somemore. So I think it must be really nice la! Usually I go Penang is to shop at the big malls but that time I persuaded my hubby to visit this ChinaHouse, din't bring GPS that time so we took a while to locate the cafe, somemore it was a hot afternoon, carrying Aden pula that time! But after the visit, I think ok also la, since I satisfied my craving already... And I can tell people 'yea I went there before already!' xD

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But actually it's a bit difficult to locate the cafe, I mean look at the signboard, no big fancy colorful 招牌 one, so must look carefully then only can find.

I do love their whole designs inside, a few different corners, salute the boss's effort in designing these corners, give people a different feel and 'wow' effects, and got these vintage and modern feels. I think it has been renovated a bit? Cause some corners you shared in the photos I haven't seen before... That time I went I sat downstair, near to the staircase, and there was a big mirror just beside the table.

The courtyard with the pond ho, now I think they redesign and add on decorations already, so with the lightning it actually looks romantic. But during the time I went, it was so quiet and without much decorations, looks spooky to me actually, haha!

      Delete
    2. The time you went looks crowded, I guess night time got more customers? That time I went was Sunday noon, also kinda crowded but still got empty tables, and I saw got a lot of 鬼佬 inside ;)

Their cakes are indeed very attractive and interesting, so many types right? Don't know which one to choose also, so when you said you needed to spend 10 minutes thinking what to choose, I can totally understand, haha!
Hmm their service is quite good also right? Waiter/waitress is polite ;)

      Delete
    3. yes, i actually like this place but it was a saturday night when we went, it was quite full but luckily we were still able to get a table.. i actually walked from the front to the back of the place and took photos like there's no tomorrow!! hahaha, but i think the people there also are used to tourists taking photos already.. it's a nice place leh, nice environment, and i especially like the 懷舊 but not really 懷舊 feel lah (hehehehehe, you know what i mean??).. and their cakes, fuyoh, so many choices and i really feel like trying all of them.. have not tried their dishes, maybe next time if i go to Penang again and by chance go to this ChinaHouse, must try their food already..

From ouside looks like just any old place but inside so surprisingly big a good mixture of the good new and old. The stairs looks very steep leh.

Mak oi...they even managed to fit a pool table there.

from G onwards...my mouth nearly drop to the floor leh....so surprise to see such big court yard behind there

and got koi fish pond some more. if i didnt know i thought u go vacation in china liao. reminds me of the stories in Lisa See's books. Peony in love and such.
