2014.04.24 | 超貴飲品

[Volume 9 Issue 4, #1886]
in my previous post, i used a bowl of yummy fishball noodles to bring up attitude issues of eateries.. today, let's get these two refreshing glasses of calamansi and ambra juice to start a (probably debatable) topic.. so, what do you think of beverages sold in eateries or generally in the market now?? i think one word describes what i would say - OVERPRICED!! okay, we know things are getting expensive, this is inevitable and i also accept such economic trend, but what i cannot except is price of drinks close to the price of food if not more expensive.. i am fine if you use 5 oranges to make me a cup of pure juice and charge me RM10, but not selling me a cup of juice diluted from cordial or artificial flavoring at RM6.90, while my fried noodles only costs me RM7.90.. okay, that's probably higher end eateries (that youngsters and rich people can afford to go often), but back to the down-to-earth shops or stalls we more often patronise, how is it justifiable for a RM2.00 glass of lime water and a RM1.60 glass of herbal tea from concentrate?? hiking ingredients price, increasing operating cost and inflation?? likely a very handsome profit margin too.. well, being quite thrifty, maybe i'll just settle with water or teh cina ais, which seem to be healthier and more thirst-quenching too!! or sometimes i don't even order drinks, so that i don't fall into the trap~~ :p

    2. When I was TTC (trying to conceive), I stopped taking cold drinks, but it didn't last very long.. Coz behtahan ma.. After 1 year not getting pregnant, I started taking warm drinks and stopped all the gassy drinks.. But still the same, not pregnant.. After that, I tak kisah liao, hentam only..I eat what I want, drink what I want, couldn't be bothered so much.. Then I got pregnant, keke..

During the first pregnancy, I controlled myself and limit my intake on ice cream, soft drinks, "cold" fruits, iced drinks, coz kiasu ma, scared ma, kan.. Darenot even drink "cold" soups like "sai yeong choi" soup, etc..

Wah, during my 2nd pregnancy, everyday I took canned fruits+vanilla ice cream+ice cream soda.. P/S: I didn't have any gestational diabetes ok.. I ate everything, in moderation of course.. Ate leong fun, pineapple, watermelon, ice cream, Coke..

Guess it depends on individuals.. if biasa liao that thing, plus doing it everyday, then I think should be ok.. My friend only orders warm water (air suam) everytime she eats out, nomatter how hot the weather..

    3. Good morning Xiao Ying and Princess ribbons

last time plain water FOC geh . Now plain water also can charge till RM1 a glass leh. Crazy moe? Like that bring own mineral water also better la.

There is one restaurant in brickfield that charge its customer if they bring outside food and drinks into the shop to eat. That restaurant have a lot of hawkers punya. I think a bit too much lor.

Now I like hot tea la but also can take those cold drinks. depending what i eat la. I see the price of hot drinks and cold drinks have difference leh. Some difference so much till reach RM1 leh. Come on la...ice so expensive meh?

Really too much leh some hawker stall charge drinks so expensive till rm5-Rm6 . Carrot juice....how many carrots are used? One pkt of carrot in hypermarket cost how much? total cost i dont think even up to RM1. then they selling those juices till RM5 Rm6 a glass. High class joints lagi teruk...belasan RM. Vomit blood leh

小影 always got first sip!! Must be sticking in front of the monitor everyday huh? :p

Princess Ribbon, wah you very 'kam sei'! I avoid icy drinks at all course when I was TTC. Cause I know my body, weak on the inside so cannot afford to take icy drinks if I wanna get pregnant. But then like you said, sometimes cannot tahan also, so got curi curi take some cold stuff la! :p
Anyway, I agree with you, different people different body, some totally no problem in conceiving despite all the cold and gassy stuff....

    5. Pregnant can eat leong fun, pineapple, watermelon, meh??? Don't know le, all my sisters are not allow to eat that while pregnant woh, I think maybe we don't realized it problems, but when start getting older, the affect will shows up...since all my sisters have very big age range with me, so they know la!!! Always say cannot this and cannot that one!!!

Yah la, those what juice what juice...always charge like Rm5 to 6...until I don't have any appetite to drink already....=[

Nope, that's my timing for breakfast, I always have my breakfast around that time, so I will be in front of pc, watching news, blog walking and having breakfast!!!

    6. Ya wo 小影,by right leh those food are consider the 'cooling' type better don't take geh... But people say moderation is the key, so a bit of everything once a while should be fine la... Of course it depends on individual also, some can tahan but some cannot. So just listen to the body lo.
But if it's the elderly leh, they will sure say cannot cannot! My aunty used to warn me don't take this lightly but I sometimes say 'never mind la, a bit only, I don't take it often one...' Then she will say 'now you feel nothing, wait til you grow older then only you know! 到时风湿什么痛统统找上门你才知道!' Hehehe~
But sometimes really cannot tahan ma, got the craving leh~~

    7. During my first pregnancy, I followed strictly the rules.. Really.. I was very careful with what I put in my mouth.. No cooling fruits, no cold stuffs, no gassy drinks, no ice cream.. Coz first pregnancy ma, everything sure scared, hehe,, Somemore I was very difficult to conceive leh, so of course have to takecare and be more careful..

But ahh, human is like that.. During the 2nd pregnancy, all hemtam.. Of course in moderation la, I takut jugak.. Everyday ice cream soda+vanilla ice cream+canned fruits leh.. Really can die..

And tell you what, my body is not the strong type also.. I got slight bleeding on my 5th month leh.. Quickly went to see my gynae, he gave me a jab, and ask me to bedrest for 2 days.. Kononnya I move too much or work too much or do too much housework kua.. or maybe I carried Kz too much..

I asked him, anything to do with food? Like ice cream and soft drinks and what not? He said no. But still, better folllow la, to be safe..

I tell you ahh, after that day, I vowed (again) not to take cooling food and cold stuffs, scared jor ma.. But when I reached 7th or 8th month, behtahan again, and started back all the cold stuffs and gassy drinks, keke..

      Human....................

    8. Hahaha, normal la, I understand your condition! Here say won't take again, but the next seconds, forgot already ;P
But then glad that you were alright, bleeding during pregnancy is not a good sign at all. Must not neglect that!

Yea, first pregnancy sure takut one, then the next one, can relax a bit cause got experience already!
Well, western doctor sure say we can eat anything we want, but if go to see those chinese sinsei, they sure say cannot!! I once consulted the chinese sinsei and he asked me to totally avoid laksa, tomyam, ice cream, cold drinks like barley, 100 plus and etc, he said must not touch those food at all when TTC.
Erm in the beginning I did, but after some times I got curi curi eat a bit also, hehehe!! And you know what, everytime after I eat those food I feel super guilty one!! :p

    9. Talk about pregnancy, I totally never touch ice drinks - totally no.. Only warm plain water. I love Teh Peng - same like Old Town Xi Mut Ice Tea or "Nai Char" it is my favourite, but during my first pregnancy - I really obey and didn't take it lor.. But hor when come to the second one, I did obey again and skip all thsoe cold drinks... but still got curi curi lor...sometimes kenot tahan mar. Both pregnancy of mine is totally different. Hebe's time, I really love to drink something sweet and sour - like "Kat Zai Soon Mooi", Ambra juice oh super delicious - thrill my thirst leh...One thing I totally skip is ice cream.

    10. Good morning bloggers! Happy Monday!

I thought SK posted about overpriced drinks but so much comments about pregnancy stories. I want to say just one thing, better heed the advice not to drink iced water too much whether males or females as it would slowly harm our organs in many ways. I have the habit to drink hot beverages and cold drinks occasionally even though I won't get pregnant. Wakakaka

      Delete
    11. Yes sinsei TM, will listen to your advice. Cold drinks is not good. I prefer to order warm drinks by the time, I finish the meal, the drink already cool down and it is nice to drink too...I think it is better this way.

      Delete
    12. Yes, cold drinks is not that good for our health, first is not good teeth, like when given those cold drink, is for sure just half of it are "drinks" and half of are ice cube, then usually people finish the "drinks" fast got nothing to do will bite the ice cube...so it's not good for the teeth!!!

    13. yeah, i think drinks really have very very high profit margin lah.. what's the cost of one carrot?? less than 20-sen?? but then we might be charged like RM5 ringgit!! eih, that's too much right?? and those cordial juice or artificial flavorings, less than RM10 a bottle but can make more than 100 cups of drinks, and we are charged RM2 for those??

and TM please give me five!! this post is about overpriced drinks and not about pregnancy, so i am not going to respond to comments out of topic, and of course comments out of topics all tarak markah lah, hehehe~~ :D

    14. Sk, no matter how out of topic also got sangkut paut one... no meh..don;t tell me none of the content is related also? Women relates drinks with pregnancy is very normal mar... but if to warm drinks outside is much cheaper than those cold drinks too... Probably cheaper by 20cents...

Unless you order kopi kau, milo kau then should be pricey a lil bit lor. Hey I can order a giant mug of ambra juice lor if I really want to feel like drinking during pregnancy... So that time we don;t usually bother how much is that cup of drinks too.

Recently, Taiping got one new drink called "San Guo" - Three Kingdom. Want to know how much I think is RM3.50 per glass. Taste was like the "Sam Sek Nai Char". The special about this drink is got chin chau - leong fun one... taste quite nice lar.. Imagine that time was a hit - everyone around the table order one glass - make it 8 of us, and that has costs us RM28.00. It served with standard glass lor...

    15. of course it's common when we relate drinks with pregnancy.. okay, if you are saying that you are pregnant and want to save money so you don't order expensive drinks, that's around the topic.. but if you say you are pregnant and like to drink this and order that, i don't see how it relates to the topic of this post woh.. anyway, this is my blog, my say, hahaha!! :p

oh, so the "San Guo" is something like "Sam Sek Nai Char" with cincau?? hmmm, not bad, i actually like drinks with jelly inside, can chew chew a bit.. but then maybe it would be better to use milk-tea jelly instead of cincau huh?? hmmmm, if that's the case, i think would be RM13.50 instead of RM3.50 already, haha~~

  2. First thing I see is the “kat zhai suen mui” drink, hehe.. The picture was loading very slowly, and I could see your Chinese descriptions first..

So how much is this drink? A big glass like that I think easily cost RM7.90? Neh, those western cafes where you go eat fish & chips and chicken chop one.. They have drinks size one, yes? Like small, medium or large.. Like you can choose what you want, normally fruit drinks like laichee, apple juice, orange juice, etc.. The S one maybe RM3.90, M one maybe RM5.90, large one RM7.90..

Call me cheapo, usually hubby order 1 large one, then we both share.. But hor, sometimes they are very “cheating” also, put a lot of ice..

    1. There was one time we ordered the soursop drink.. Large one, coz I was very thirsty that time.. Wah, sekali I bit into the fruit, so sweet, man! Tasted so artificial, like soaked in sugar water leh.. But I guess every café is doing the same also.. I think they have this pre-packed soursop fruit (soaked in sugar water), then they just scoop it into the drink (made from soursop cordial).. Can easily find cordial in supermarket.. But what to do, that time, craving for soursop drink ma, ma order lor.. Hubby say, if like that, better buy a big bottle of cordial and “choong” (bancuh) yourself.. kekekeke..

      Delete
    2. Normally if apple or orange, they willuse fresh fruit, but very diluted lor.. They will add more water & sugar, the fruit maybe they use 1 biji only.. In my office canteen, I usually order “fresh orange juice – double”.. Guess the price.. They charge for 2 biji punyer price, amount is RM7 leh, not cheap.. My colleague crazy one, order triple.. He ordered “2 apple + 1 orange” (triple la tu, kan?), I dare not mention the price.. It’s > RM10, and the price is more than the fried rice (RM6.90) he ordered.. Cannot say he’s crazy coz it’s his money, his appetite, his sukak.. He teringin fruit juice that day, so he didn’t mind paying >RM10 for a glass of fresh fruit juice..

    3. When I eat out, my favourite drink is soya bean.. Not the can one la.. if can one, then I don’t want lor.. Usually I will ask first la, izzit can one.. If can, then I say don’t want lor.. Then I will settle for herbal tea “leong sui”… Normally will order soya bean or “leong sui” when I eat out la..

If dine in special restaurants, then depends what they have in the menu.. Sometimes very canggih one, like ice blended thingy, then if they have ahh, I will be tempted to try those too.. Like some restaurants they have ice blended milk longan drink, wah, nice.. Then some have ice blended soya+cendol+gula Melaka, wah, of coz I will order those la.. macam-macam got, baru la tak boring, kan?

    4. Since we are in the drinks topic, I wana story you something.. Yesterday we were having lunch in coffeshop in SS2.. Ok, if you wana know in details, we went for bak kut teh and steamed fish.. The specialty of the shop are bak kut teh and steamed “jeong jing” fish..

Ok lor, so we went there.. Ordered our food.. Lady boss wanted to “choong char” (bancuh tea).. The boss said “sorry, today no water, no bancuh the”.. So we asked, what drinks then? Boss said “got leong sui, barley, 100 plus, coke”.. Most of us ordered leong sui, lady boss ordered 100 plus.. She usually doesn’t take gassy drinks..

When out leong sui came, it looks so diluted, pathetic, almost tasteless..Lady boss said “see, I so smart order 100 plus, the boss said no water to bancuh tea, but got water to make your leong sui????”… Eh, make sense wor what she said.. She was smart to order 100 plus, coz it’s in a can, so whether or not there is water or not, it won’t be affected.. The safetest is to drink canned drinks..

Hmm, damn, why I never thought of it..

    5. I, for one, cannot order plain water or hot drinks when I eat out.. The weather is already so hot (if eat at coffeshop), if ask me drink hot drinks, I can die.. usually after a hot bowl of soupy noodles, when there is iced drinks, wah, very syiok one oohh..

But if hot drinks ahh, wah, feel like dying (sorry, dont curse me, maybe it’s just me ok)..

Imagine after my big bowl of soupy noodles, whole body sweating, even the thighs and panties also got sweat, then lagi drink hot drinks wor, no syiok la..

Eh, sometimes when I get up from the seat, got some sweat sticking on the chair leh, kekekeke.. Sorry, a bit gross, but I guess it’s normal hor..

When you are sweating while eating, your thighs and backside bumbum also sweating ma, kan? When you get up from the seat, sure got sweat marks on the chair, rite?

I will quickly use my hand to wipe away the sweat marks lor.. If not, malu ahh... What will the guy colleagues think of me?

    8. Hahaha same here, Princess Ribbon. Order Gelas Besar RM7.90 and share. We do that too.

Now i very super scared of order katt chai shui mui drinks...calamasi drink. have bad experience before. Ordered that in a hawker typr of restaurant.

You know those drinks have bits of asamboi floatingabout right? One time i nearly dranbk babies lipas! Lucky my colleague noticed and we look closely..those were baby lipas. so darn geli. Bannn.....but that time i was young la. Tak pandi complain. just left the drink like that and tarak drink. duno how the lipas go into the asamboi

    9. Yea so many cafe use those premixed for fruit juice and dare to claim fresh juice. Some more sell till nearly rm 10 a glass. Terrible leh

One that makes me angry is the ice lemon tea. They always make from premix o those big containers type. I would always asked it the tea freshly brew or is that premix. I dont like premix.

LOL...I dont order leong sui liao la in restaurant. it will either too diluted or too sweet and price so expensive leh, RM2 Rm3 a cup. Like that i boil at home lagi best. I can brag my lohan gua leong sui is the best leh. *eksyen mode* one big pot drink till lausai also wont be expensive as RM10 leh. That pot can make more than 30 cups leh....hmmm come to think of it if i open gerai sell leong sui maybe can fight with the famous one in petaling street leh LOL

      Delete
    10. I don't like they put so much ice inside, then the drinks turned out to be very cold, like drinking "ice" not the juice or whatever lo!!!

Princess Ribbon, why you do that le, if people see then see lo, everyone might sweat also what...but usually I'll the last one who stand up or not even so I'll push the chair back inside so if sweat on the chair, I also didn't realize it!!!

Small Kucing, sometimes I ask without sugar one, like "I want a cup of leong sui but no ice, no sugar!" Because like if they add ice inside they'll put a lot, end up just like drinking "ice" or half of the leong sui only!!! No sugar as we know that they always add in a lot of sugar one, and the most important point is all my family members also sugar free!!! =]

    11. Hehe, I too like 'kat zai sun mui' a lot! I have the same thoughts when I see the photo, such a great drinks for this hot weather!! Hmm actually I can drink it regardless of the weather la! Cause it's sourish, most ladies also love sourish stuff ma! Hehe! And inside got 1 or 2 plums, can chew chew a bit after drinking the juice, it's a great 'snacks' rather than chewing on the ice~
Plus it's cooling so it's surely a yummy drink!
I remember last time when I was younger, I used to chew on the plum, and 'pui' it back into the drinks and continue drinking the juice, then chew again til it's finished! Then sometimes I'll still chew on the seed, even though I already left the place, though it's very keras but then just sucking on the seed is fun! xD
Now thinking back, got a bit disgusting la... xD But then again, who cares? It's my drink, not that I share it with anyone also.... :p

But too bad not every stall serve this drinks, at least in Taiping it's like this, by right it's something so common right?

Oh ya, these days hawkers also use the 'cheat' method already... A glass of drinks is made of 60% ice and 40% of the original drinks. If you scoop out the ice, what's left is just about half the glass of juice only, some even lesser! Even if order no ice one, they already pour in lots of water, or sugar syrup.

      Delete
    12. So actually the best drink to order is sky juice aka plain water! Some serve free water but some not... Sometimes even a glass of ice also cost 30 cent or more depending on the kopitiam/cafe.
Anyway, I do order plain water (warm water to be precise) most of the times. But at the same time I am worry about the 'taste', some hawker serve boiling water (I mean they boil the water themselves) then ok la, since boiling water usually is tasteless. But if those using the water filter/dispenser one, mostly got one funny smell one leh! I am very particular about this one, if I feel something weird at the first sip, I will just leave the glass there and order something else, then I'll remind myself not to order plain water anymore from that stall. I'd rather pay a bit extra and order something else~ Don't know leh, cannot accept those funny taste of the water.

Speaking about drinks at hawker center.... it's either I order plain water or have the chinese tea. If dining with family usually we order a pot of chinese tea (pu er) to share, erm actually only the ladies(eg myself, MIL and SIL) drink la, whereas gentlemen (FIL, BIL and hubby, Aden excluded xDD) drink beer one. Actually chinese tea is a good choice after water... Can wash away some oil, and cheap too!

      Delete
    13. Eh, same here.. When I go lunch with my colleagues ahh, sometimes I also order kat zhai suen mui drink.. I see most of my colleague will leave the suen mui alone.. Seems like only me will chew the suen mui, and "pui" it back into the glass and continue drinking.. Sometimes, I feel paiseh, so I leave it til the end, after the drink is finished, then I only pick the suen mui to chew, then "pui" back the seed into the glass, then leave, teehee...

Since now we are talking about boiled water in coffeshop (air suam), if wana order air suam, better take own water bottle lor.. Jimat lagi.. If go eat out, and order air suam, like "mm dai" (not worth) like that.. They charge RM1 or RM0.50 for "sky juice" (peerrrrhhhh, plain water say plain water la, sky juice pulak)... Hehehehehe...

About "chong char" (bancuh tea), my lady boss very sukak one.. Everytime if go out "kiu soong" ahh, she will order "chong char".. Maybe it's just me, I don't like la.. I prefer my can of cola or 100 plus, or "leong sui" ice, kekekeke..

      Delete
    14. Haha high 5 there! Seems that we both do the same tricks to the suen mui, actually I like suen mui on its own, and the idea of putting suen mui into drinks is briliant!
Yep, some of the hawker really very daring one, RM 1 for a glass of plain water!! What, the water is diamond water is it? Hmm, some of them display the banner and acknowledge that they use diamond water/coway water in the entire shop, but then honestly, we won't/don't know if they really use such water lo, who will know what's going on in their pantry/kitchen right?

      Delete
    15. yeah, very scary lah the way they charge the drinks!! the cost probably less than RM1 but then look at those prices!! exorbitant lah!! maybe we all go sell drinks better, so high profit margin, no need to sit in the office work so hard but just got paid so little..

nowadays plain water also charge already, and what i hate most are those artificial herbal tea!! aiyoh, really cannot drink one lah, somemore charge you RM1.50 at least.. so safest is to order chinese tea or canned drinks lah, at least the taste would be what we expect lor..

      Delete
  3. Errr ... I usually ordered kopi and I think it's worth it. At kopitiam, the cheaper options around rm2 but kao and nice. In cafe, they use high graded beans so , it's justifiable to me. Not too sure about lime juice or herbal drinks. Lol

    ReplyDelete

    1. I don't drink coffee one, just milo or horlics.. hehe.. Not even tea.. I had coffee once when I was pregnant with G, Neslo, to be exact.. Wah, cannot oohhh.. After that, my heart beat so fast, couldn't concentrate in work the whole day, really regretted taking it..

      Delete
    2. Now kopu also naik harga liao lor not necessary rm2 liao.

Some more not all kao kao like in ipoh punya. if in kl maybe they will make one big pot and just pour in to the cup and add ice.

In some Cafe also some quality not that good leh. Pricey. But again depending on the cafe la.

      Delete
    3. Try those that offer good kopi like toast box or kluang railway kopi. Don't go to those normal kopitiam.

      Delete
    4. my side only have old town kopi tiam :(.... but the one at my office not bad la. RM2.35 for kopi o. they also very kind. they give the grounded coffee bean as handwash.

    5. Old town kopi C also not bad. Very kao!

    6. I like Mongkok Char Chan Teng (or any HK kopitiam) almond cream drink.. Anyone?

      Delete
    7. sometimes we are also not sure how the price is adjusted and how it is justifiable.. yeah, coffee outlet may use better coffee bean, but is RM15 for a cup justifiable?? surely they have a very high profit margin.. and "better" coffee means you pay higher price lor - sure not for a person who doesn't drink coffee like me, hehe~~

  4. Anyway, nowadays, most of the places were like for folks to mingle with a drink , instead of eating. Maybe they charge higher with nicely decorated drinks to cover back their costs. Imagine folks sitting there for hours chit chatting.

    1. Yep, I have seen people sitting there chi-chatting for hours, using their free wifi, and only order a drink, maybe an ice blended..

    2. hahaha like me la...hang out in my office for half a day with order of a cup of kopi o. rugi air cond and the electricity lor for them. Lucky they not charging like mamak leh . in some mamak restaurant they charge RM1 per hour if wanna plug in computer to electric socket leh.

Now many business are conducted in Cafe. Starbuck, coffee bean and similar places. So like you have said la Chris. People just order drinks . seldom order food.

    3. True lor. Just order a drink and talk the sky, the moon, the weather, the hubby, the wife, the mistresses, the kids, schools, massage parlour, ah seng, ah lian, jib kor, audi, giant, tesco, the dogs and cats, mozzies. ...etc etc.. and David Moyes.

But if for me, I'll see what situation it is la.. If really wanna sit there for hours one, I'll usually order something to eat, like french fries/nuggets, not main course but at least some snacks la! Not that paiseh ma! People also wanna do business geh.... Kesian the boss, imagine if everyone also do like that, sure bankrupt!

    5. Ooohh same here.. If wana sit there for a long time, I will also order light snacks like what you said: fries, nuggets, fish fingers, samosa, sandwiches, sausages.. They always have "Snacks" in their menu rite.. Or "Finger Food"...

      Delete
    6. Yea, those snacks are great for people like us who intend just to chit chat, but not to feed our tummy. If order main course seems too much pula, so save a bit and order snacks instead~

      Delete
    7. yeah, maybe that's one reason why they charge so expensively for drinks, because many people just order drinks and sit there using the facilities for one whole day.. i know some places in HK who charges you double if you just order drinks without food :)

      Delete
  5. In SG, the prices of drinks are still ok to me. Anyway, I agreed it's a bit over priced if kopitiam charged high for simple drinks. Might as well bring our own water bottles instead of drinking those sugary herbal drinks.

    1. but down side is some they say no outside food allow though not strictly enforced la. but now trend seems that this rules be more and more strict leh.

Like the kopitiam in brickfields that i mentioned in my comment...they put sign there if bring in outside food and drinks...they will charge RM entah rm3 or what in lieu of the food leh.

    2. Own plain water also cannot ? Then after finish makan, go out and drink. Lol

  6. Good morning SK and everyone.

hahaha....got new topic ah....drinks...yeah now drinks are getting more and more expensive. Bring own water leh. Better that way.

I am sure Lina will agree with me on that.

Got influenced by her. Now certain place i bring my own drinks.Coz price of drinks very mahal.

Like my office i will order a kopi o rm2.35. Then bring my own chinese tea. can last me for half a day. no need keep buying.

    1. Yes, like my mom always the one provide chinese tea, cheaper and taste nicer, as those china and taiwan businessmen always buy those chinese tea as souvenir for us, then we got it all for my mom!!! =]

    2. Agree, it's a good thing to practise actually, bringing own water. But hor I seldom do like that one, especially if eating at Taiping. Don't know why, just feel that it's a bit troublesome bringing a tumbler out, hehe! Plus drinks at Taiping still consider ok la, reasonably priced, so may be that's why I am used to order drinks from outside?

Unless if travelling outstation/oversea la, then I'll spare my own water, just in case if they serve expensive drinks, or different types of drinks.
I remember if go to those bars/lounge, a glass of orange juice (not freshly squeeze one some more) or Coke can be more expensive than alcohol! So sometimes I'd rather take the alcohol though I know it's not good, but at least more worth ma!

    3. For the kids, yes, I always bring their water tumbler along.. It's a norm liao, before go out, must pack this that in the diaper bag.. Even for Kz, although now he's a big boy liao.. But if we need to go out for a long time, I still need to pack his milk powder and bottle along.. A for the water tumbler, he can always hang around his neck, hehe.. Too heavy to be carried into the diaper bag also la..

For G, no need say lor, have to pack many things.. milk powder, bottle, water, hot water in a flask, wet wipes, extra clothes, lampin, hankerchief, hat (just in case hot or sunny or what), snacks like rusk or baby biscuits, cereals (just in case he's hungry and I'm inconvenient to make milk), etc..

Ooops, what am I talking? I hope not out of topic.. hehehehe...

    4. Hayley, yep agreed... In Langkawi, a can of Shandy is cheaper than a glass of soya bean (or same price?), I forgot.. But I went there few years ago with the in laws, so everyone ordered Shandy (and beer for the guys)...

      Delete
    5. Same with my son, I also pack his water tumbler in the bag everytime we go out, it's better to let kids drink own water rather than ordering drinks from outside, we adults can tolerate those sugars and ice but toddlers sure cannot.
And I want to make it a habit for him, let him know he must drink his own water when going out, of course sometimes we let him sip our drinks a bit but don't overdo it, if not next time they biasa already sure insist on ordering drinks for themselves!

      Delete
    6. yeah, i think it would be good to bring along a bottle of water with us.. but then in KL i rarely do that lah, usually just buy drinks.. but when i go overseas, i will buy a bottle and keep it in my bag, because more walking and we do not know where we can get water, somemore when travelling sure want to save money as much as possible..

  7. Believe me, I don't order drinks at all. I still prefer my own bottle of water.

  10. Good topic, SK! Drinks I would say is the item with the biggest profit margin in any eatery. And I always avoid fruit juices like the plague when eating out. Take water melon juice for example. There is hardly any watermelon in there, just lots of sugar water. And to pay RM6-RM7 for it is ridiculous. Better to make our fruit juices at home. We get pure fruit juice and more hygienic too!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Another thing I hate is they load the drinks with so much ice. If you remove the ice, there is barely half a glass of the beverage.

      Delete
    2. yeah, RM6-RM7 for a small glass of fruit juice, and probably they just use one portion of fruits (and may not be the freshest ones) then add in lots of water and crushed ice.. so what you actually drink is just a few sips of diluted juice.. with that money, can make 20 cups at home at least..

  11. Nowadays I drink plain water.. 50sen for a glass... if barley RM1.50 and with that amount of money, I can boil one big pot... sigh.. what to do.. sometimes dont drink also cannot, sitting inside the shop.. so at least one glass of water... if my girl is around, normally we share a glass of fruit juice or leong sui...

Not just food, the yoga center which I go, last time fee per class is RM 7 for non member, after CNY become RM 10 already!! Suddenly increase by RM 3 leh, actually many of us also discussing about it but just to ourselves la! Dare not talk too much to the tauke soh... I have friends who ran food outlets and they have no choice but to raise the price of drinks high in order to maximize their profits as the rentals are high. Usually I would look at the prices of drinks before ordering the food. In the past I have been conned unexpectedly until the bills hit the skies.

I went to one Japanese restaurant last weekend in One-U and saw the prices of all drinks being higher than most sushi plates running along the carousel. I settled for their Green Hot Tea and was happy that the bill was only RM30 plus after eating delicious meals. I seldom felt so happy for saving RM20 on drinks!
