[Volume 8 Issue 11, #1820]
i guess you won't find this mural unfamiliar right?? it's the work of Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic somewhere (i'm unclear of the exact location) in JB, using the character from Legoland in JB to depict a rather frequent scene in the city where one would very likely bump into a robber around the corner, inspired by advices from the locals crimes in the city.. the mural gained widespread attention and is much talked about, within the internet itself many were impressed and like what has been done.. however the city mayor Ismail Karim doesn't seem to be happy with it, he immediately ordered this mural to be erased as he claimed that it defames the city's reputation.. i personally agree with what Zacharevic responded "art does not cause the defamation but crime itself" which is very true.. frankly, i would see this mural as a warning to the people (though done artistically), and a motive for the authority to exert more effort to bring down the occurrences.. what's wrong with this mural for just portraying the truth, and if we can see many official "beware of snatch thief" signboards erecting in KL?? if that is what people think of JB, what is the use of erasing that mural but not doing something to fight crimes and hence change their perceptions?? now, it seems like it's another example of "ostrich burying its head" story here.. in the mayor's shoes he may likely have to do so, but those are purely my personal opinions, how would you view this then?? :)
[latest updates] a group of four painted a police beside the robber.. while Zacharevic commented that as a vandalism act, i would see it as the youngsters trying to save the mural by making it "politically right", their have good motives.. after this post was written but before published, the city council has already sent people to totally remove the mural yesterday.. PERIOD

Many cases already, you name it: Rape, robberies, human trafficking, organ harvesting (has this happened here? The child is soaked in ice in a tub, all organs removed).. Scary...

  2. So I've heard. I would just follow what Confucius said: When one has nothing nice to say, it is best to remain silent. No doubt, the artist has his point - everyone knows that...

However, I really cannot understand why there were people in Penang who went and vandalise his nice paintings - twice, at least, right? What is wrong with those people?

    1. They used to do that in all schools - very nice ones but the problem is they do not have the allocation to maintain them and it all gets faded...and old, not nice at all.

Maintenance is very important - I don't think the people here are that pro-active. Once it is done, it is done...and after all the publicity, they will just conveniently forget about it.

Personally, I think a regular nice new coat of paint on all shop buildings would be nice. The town council here in Sibu is very good - they will send reminders to you if your shop looks old and dirty, ask you to repaint. Of course, there will be some who will just ignore...but most will follow quietly.

      Delete
    2. How much allocation is needed for a school to paint murals? A LOT?

Because I remember I was in charge of painting murals of my dorm when I was in school, and all the warden gave me were buckets and buckets of paints.

The rest was handled by the students themselves.

      Maintenance too

    4. yeah, i think murals or even nice graffiti is kind of nice.. for example that stretch of artistic graffiti mural along the river around Central Market in KL.. i like that initiative very much!!

and i gotta agree with STP, maintenance is as important as the initiative.. as we can see, there are so many things not properly maintained in our country, it's actually a sad thing to see things get old and not functioning, and in the end disposed off just like that..

wow, lina must be very good in painting, she was in charge of the murals painting at school!! fuyoh..

Correct la. If there are that many official "beware of snatch thief" signboards erected in KL, then what is wrong with that mural?

All the anger might as well as put into good use. Instead of erasing the mural, why not put up more notice.

Just the other day I discovered from a facebook friend that Selangor used to have this apps called MyDistress for smartphone user. But now gone.

Here is the extract i copied from my friend's FB wall.

"Although Dato' Tun Hisan has opted for early retirement, he is much missed by his officers and men, and more, by the Selangor folks. He launched many good initiatives when he was their Chief Police Officer. One of the initiatives was the MyDistress App for smartphones which had rescued many people. All they need to do is activate the App when in need of help, and within minutes police will be there, guided by GPS. To run it is a commitment and thus a heavy responsibility which is why it was only available in Selangor. Dato' Tun Hisan saw it running. Thus, many people today feel sad that the MyDistress has ceased operation now. I am sad too.

Here is a testimonial from one of many who had benefited from MyDistress who had written to The Star.

    Subject: My Distress

    Dear Austin,

I couldn't agree less that My Distress application by PDRM should be reinstated.

On 4th November 2013 at around 4.30 pm my daughter and her friend had an encounter with a road bully in Shah Alam. She has My Distress application on her phone. She was not able to use it as the application was discontinued as announce by the Selangor Chief Police Officer.

The man became very aggressive and began kicking her friends car when they stopped over. He even sped at the lady driver's face. This was over a cutting of lanes.

She called me and I advised her to proceed to the nearest police station.

I then dialed 999. Got the operator who asked me too many questions on how the incident happen. Where is the exact location of my daughter, etc. How the h*ll do I know their location since they are driving towards a police station.

If she could trigger her My Distress the Police will know her exact location. Time wasted.

I have had two experience in using My Distress.

    1. My Neighbour, a Snr Police Officer called me once telling me he has cornered a burglar. I pressed a button on my Fone My Distress which sends a signal that I have an emergency in my house. Police called me and I told them it was my neighbour's house. Within minutes two Patrol cars arrived.

    2. I was on my way to KL Sentral in a commuter train at around 2pm. My wife a teacher called me that she saw a man jumping over my house fence. The train was near Bangsar. I triggered My Distress. Police called and informed that they have despatched assistance. I made my trip back. Reaching home there where two Patrol cars and the Police where taking statement from my wife. What' a relief.

    3. I was praying at a Surau in a Petrol station in Puchong when I saw a man with a bag and an axe . I triggered My Distress. I do not know the exact address. Again Police called and they know my where abouts. Again within minutes they came and questioned the guy.

Kudos for the Police with My Distress.

    Samad Rahimi Deraman

HOPEFULLY, MORE PEOPLE WILL WRITE TO THE PRESS OR USE SOCIAL MEDIA LIKE FACEBOOK TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK TO PDRM & THE GOVERNMENT ON THE NEED TO BRING BACK NOT JUST MYDISTRESS TO SELANGOR BUT ALSO EXTEND TO WHOLE COUNTRY. PLEASE SHARE IF YOU AGREE.

It will become a wall trend now to liven up back lanes!! The thousands of foreign tourists who flocked to Penang annualy were impressed by this Art which required them to make long walks across the Chinatown in Penang's Heritage zone. The CM Lim Guan Eng also assured everyone that it is very safe to walk around the touristy belts even in the middle of the night. I did that.

Now coming to this Johor Bahru's mural issue, the Star mentioned today that so many Singaporeans have made trips across the causeway to take a good look at these wall murals! Soon they will copy in their island too!

    6. Muahahahahahaa you counted Mak Glam's scribbles and stains on the walls as the earliest mural painters! Wow! We should officially record in history books!

Most artists did very extensive and long wall murals but I am not sure who started those cute human drawings on the walls that looked real life in size and perfect realities. That's where it started from Penang and suddenly attracted so much attention.

    2. Why are THEY get so sensitive towards the painting leh, really don't understand that. Ernest Zacharevic did a very good job to let everyone alert in any robbery cases - to stay careful and as a precaution. Since advertisement and signboard didn't get much attention from the public.

    4. In fact, crime cases shown a very high statistic at JB. There are several locations are very dangerous at anytime. So since Johor already has LEGO land, Ernest Zacharevic has a great idea to draw out the Lego minifigures character. Hey com' on, even all animation characters got good and bad people right?
Adapted from LEGO mini figures character encyclopedia:
"most mini figures are friendly, but there are a few rotten eggs out to spoil everybody else fun. Fortunately, these bad guys just aren't very good at being bad and their villainous misdeeds usually backfire with hilarious result." pg:94-95. Just coincidence, I bought this book for my son. It is a limited edition only cost RM69.95. Inside have more than 160 mini figures. Hey they have gangster, mini figures too lor...
