11.11.2013 | 殭屍鬼片

[Volume 8 Issue 11, #1818]
watched this movie "Rigor Mortis" last weekend, if you are a fans of the 80s chinese vampire and ghost movies, you would not want to miss this.. of course i am not going to pretend i'm a professional to give this movie a review, whether it's good or not is rather subjective, if you are interested then just go watch, hehe!! i actually grew up watching these chinese vampire and ghost movies, the vampire movies (i still remember the "Mr Vampire" series) were not too bad at least they were not too scary, but when it comes to the ghost movies, the more scary the more i wanted to watch, i even needed to rush into my room to grab my blanket to continue watching last time, haha.. anyway, these movies at a later stage were mostly added with too much of comedy elements, until i thought i was watching a comedy rather than a horror movie, since then i was no longer interested to watch any more of them.. however lately it seems that the trend was back, i've watched a few from Thai/HK/Hollywood productions and they were good indeed.. hence i personally think that horror movies should not be adding too much (or any) comedy elements, they have to be real serious and i think we only feel good if the movie could really scare the hell out of us right?? especially if the fright is simply beyond visual, stays in the thoughts and never easily being forgotten, then that is a successful horror movie.. a "ghostly" start on a monday, i know, but have a great week ahead everyone!! :)

  1. Yeah, those old Chinese vampire movies were entertaining. You're talking about those jumping corpses in Manchurian costumes, right?

As for those really scary ghost movies, I pass. Too scary for me, can't take them. Don't want to pay money to get a scare, I feel. To each his own, of course.

    2. Yeah this Thambee watched too many horror and scary movies until Anay can never write any more blog posts to scare you! Haiks. Your mind has been grossly polluted with all the scary music effects and graphic motions! People always said that watching a movie is better than reading the same story from a book dei.

  3. The ones made now not so scary la. Especially the Hollywod ones as they rely more of CG effects.

Last time, horror movies are damn scary because of the unseen. What is scary is the one that you cannot see. Suspense wor....

When I was small, use to watch a whole lot of scary Indonesian movies.

    Then, it's Chinese ones...

Thai one also quite scary but somehow I'm not really a fan of Thai movies. :P

    1. hahaha, very true also.. last time all makeup skills but nowadays all CG effects only, and at times can be overly-CG i feel.. oh, yes yes yes!! i must agree with you, those unseen ones are even more eerie and scary than those seen ones.. the unseen ones remains in your imagination and will not fade off easily.. Indon ones, i remember watching one about the banana tree spirit, that's quite scary also..

  4. Much as I hate being scared, I think I prefer watching horror movies and get scare out of my wits rather than watching a movie/drama that's full of screaming mother-in-law or scheming families.

Those family style drama, complete with wimppy, crying, cannot solve anything women against their mother-in-laws, family, society - those are the type of shows I hate. Blergh

    1. oh yeah, the silent ones are even more scary!! those that are full of screaming makes me irritated only lah.. errr, wimppy, crying, cannot solve anything women against their mother-in-laws, family, society?? have to depend also lah, i cannot generalize and say i don't like.. some can be very nice and touching also one.. :)

what about plots where you find out your lover is actually your long-lost sibling or the one who killed your father?? haha, so typical Bollywood~~

    2. Iyer... I hate that kind of plot.

It's lazy story writing for me. :(

This just shows how old Anay is! LOL

    3. cannot be lah, when it was the 80s sure Anay was happily bringing girls into the cinema and he intentionally chose ghost movies so that the girls will feel scared and then hide under his arms.. errr, or was that the other way round?? :D

    4. He brings girls to the cinema, maybe not to watch la. But to "make movie" Miahaha

  8. I think the most scary one was the recent Conjourling. It scared the shit out on my chair!!! So many men screamed in terror while watching and the audience burst out laughing instead at those weak hearted sissy men! Muahahahaha

    1. Which was the most disturbing part? For me it was the part where the lady was in the cellar, pitch black, and suddenly a pair of hands in white clapped two times! haha..

      Delete
    2. Yeah that part also scary...The other part was when the chair flew and crashed down. I think the screaming men around me made the cinema more scary!! Best of all that low budget film producer was a Malaysian!!!!!!!!

      Delete
    3. oh, i watched The Conjuring also, it was quite scary i would say.. it's directed by James Wan who is a Malaysian.. i think he has adapted some chinese ghost movie styles in which he creates those unseen scare that stays in your imagination.. i remember the western ghost movies i watched last time weren't of this style..

BTW, did Twilight Man scream like a frightened grandma in the cinema?? :p

      Delete
    4. I think even if TM screamed like a Tweety's Granny, I think he won't tell us here.. Coz if you observe what he wrote, few times liao he said other men screaming (and not him).. So my guess is he won't tell la, so don't bother asking..

      Delete
    5. very true also.. i guess when he meant "other men" that would probably includes he himself~~ :D

      Delete
    6. For this, we no need to ask.

      We simply assume! LOL

      Delete
    7. or probably that's already the fact and no assumption required?? :D

    8. Oh yes I shrieked out during the Conjourling movie!!! Twice I ducked my head down during some shocking & horror parts. It is their sound from the loud speakers that made the audience jumped. That movie was produced and based on real life true story! They filmed the entire movie in Rhode Island which is near New York State. I always found that many areas in East Coast USA have many big houses and mansions that looked like haunted homes. You can find plenty in Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, New England, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Please visit there someday!

  9. Thais love to make ghost movies because in their culture, the folks are always talking about charms, kong thau and roaming spirits! You can get rich by becoming a witch doctor there! Anyone?

When someone dies or accident happens, they will try to find numbers or relate the incident to something to spur their instinct on the winning numbers! Amazing Thailand.

    1. Same thing as the Indonesians right Anay? They are surrounded by black magic.

And that makes for a wealth of ideas for supremely eerie movies.

      Delete
    2. You understand so well what I was expressing. Their folks love to talk all these topics all the time and everyday got many hantu reruns on TV and cinemas. I seldom see Indon Ghost movies in our country as they don't seem popular but their bomohs can be damn powerful and deadly too.

      Delete
    3. errr, of course anyone would have understand what you are trying to say, your words make your message so clear dei, hahaha!! ah, probably that's true huh, the more a nation likes about the topic, the more practical it is to be made into movies, afterall movies is about earning money from the box office!! but i think the chinese should have more topics to make into movies huh, due to the religious believes and also day-to-day practices.. :)

i have watched one Indo ghost movie (or was it Malaysian production) which talked about the banana tree spirit.. boy, that was scary!!

      Delete
    4. They used to be popular Anay.

I think it became not popular because our film industry wasn't happy about the flooding of Indonesian movies into our shores and how even locals love to watch them, that there is some sort of restriction/ban iposed against importing movies from that country.

Just recently, hantu movies were banned by our government so local producers cannot make them. When the ban lifted, you see all sorts of "tahyul" movies now. That and gansters movie.

    5. oh, Mak Glam knows the film industry so well.. hmmm, she is starting to study them so that this knowledge would help her in her future media appearance and hence her ultimate stardom!! yeah yeah, Mak Glam go go go!! maybe one day we will see Mak Glam playing the leading role in a local production ghost movie.. the one kena frightened but not the one who frightens others lah~~ :p

    6. Hahaha

      No lah.. not really well.

But I do like to know the reasons of things be the way there are. And read up.

So now I like K-Pop. I kinda take the effort to learn about the industry. Read up on them.

That said, I couldn't care less about the Star's life. hehehe

Me playing ghost? I think the hubby and son would laugh and say it's a perfect role! Muahaha

      Delete
    7. wow, so deep lah this Mak Glam.. listening to K-pop but at the same time study the industry, fuyoh, salute!! eih, maybe you can win yourself an Oscar and Golden Globe for playing ghost in the movie?? :D

      Delete
    8. Not because of good acting la, for me to play hantu.

Because itu dua orang say I look scary and act scary everyday! LOL

Learning about entertainment. I just like to learn about it. When I started listening to Korean songs, I wonder about some bands. Then watched their programs and wanted to know more. So I spent time to google up info lor...

But I don't like learning about personal stuff on singers / actors. Their accomplishments, yes.

      Weird ke?

    9. Like how I know Psy even before "Oppa Gangnam Style" became a sensation.

He's a song-writer/artistes that has fallen inti scandals a few times. He tried to dodge the complusory military service. He also writes many insipirational songs such as "Champion". One of his song was banned by the government because it is deemed to be encouraging relax and selfish attitude by the younsters.

All this is more interesting too know that who go out with who or who fight with who. Hehehe

      Delete
    10. you know what?? one of the things best actress judges will look at is, they don't see you as "acting" but really "being" the role.. means, if you are going to act ghost surely you will win an Oscar because you are just being yourself!! muahahahaha :D

oh, interesting to know about PSY's history.. i don't really go google up the artists, if i like them i like what they are now.. but of course many has very inspiring history behind their success.. i guess all of the artists rose to stardom and popularity through hard times.. and what i do not like is paparazzi keep boasting their personal life scandals, and there we may lost an artist..

      Delete
    11. Of course scandal is what sells newspaper, right? Or get high viewer ratings.

      So, that's the downside lah...

Inspirational stories are boring la... hehehe

Who reads them anyway. Better read who hook up with who. Or who kena get caught cheating with who. :P

    12. I really didn't know that our local movies producers were not allowed to make hantu movies until the ban got lifted. I did think for a while what happened to all the Pontianak and Toyol movies gone to?? I thought we have been exhausted of niak-niak stories while Singapore was busy making them. We do have many scary and haunting incidents to make real life movies. Usually I find that making the ghost movies require the lowest prop and production costs since they don't need expensive props and never could they use too famous starts to act.

      Delete
    13. Last time it was banned because hantu movies contain "syirik" elements. Some alim people believe it would only lead to religious and moral decay.

Now, all sorts of gansgters movies come out and I yet to see authorities say it's the cause of all the crime and shooting done in Malaysia. But they will blame it somehow, soon. I think.

      Hubby also download.

      Much prefer it to streaming.

Download, anytime can watch. No need to always have internet connection.

    7. yeah you are right, once download you can keep (though the website always warn us to delete after 24 hours) and watch later.. those online streaming i guess will not be available after a certain time..

      Delete
    8. Last time I didn't download. But then those sites that share all the K-dramas I love, usually get blocked. KBS and other TV stations in Korea are very rajin weeding out illegal streaming.

I have to admit I watch mine free and download them free also. I am a pirate. huhuhu

So now, I make sure I download anything I like.

And thank goodness Unifi never throttle my internet speed. Unlike M and C telco. Sure habis my limit fast then speed got throttled and become so slowwwww it takes ages to even upload a photo. :(

    9. Please remember that our lives are revolved around the frequencies in this universe and all thoughts & actions could actually fly within the air space. Now I want to share a true incident of what happened to Letchumy's student's family.

One night, the student's whole family gathered in their living room at home to watch TV as usual after dinner. They have been watching that Guai Tam horror series in the DVDs for sometime. They just continued to watch as usual and huddled themselves in fear. That night, they sky was clear and suddenly they heard a loud thunder with lightning which struck into theit TV set by the big door of the house. The whole family jumped out of their skins seeing the lightning striking in loud boom and the TV blacked out immediately with smoke!! They had the most shocking moment in their lives and threw away their DVDs. They never dared to watch them again. They have been confused over the omen and consulted a medium whom I didn't hear them disclose its findings. I suspect they preferred not to reveal.

I used to watch several DVDs of Guai Tam too and many nights the evil spirits sort of emerged out from the TV set into my bedroom, giving me horrible nightmares. After that I watched them in the living room's TV instead and then Letchumy had nightmares. We have discontinued watching as the show captured real unseen ghosts into the DVDs and that could be multiplied too!!! Don't play play nia.

  12. Pendek cerita...I dont ike ghost stories/movie/books

    nenek kebayan cerita :-

    - if chinese comedy vampire ghost like Happy Ghost , I dont mind. But if it's those jumping kiong si...adoi...nightmare leh. night time sure turn on the lights to sleep.yeah..me chicken leh.

    - hate the most is those Chinese ghost stories with the scary sound effect. sometimes the ghost never come out the sound made me up 10 stories high leh.

-Malay ghost movie especially pontianak type also very scary leh. The bunyi hilaiyan really scary. Hmmm ...but if compared to Cerita Seram and Dari Kubur stories, i think the cerita seram is more scary. Coz uses own imagination. Used to curi curi read those thought banned in my school :p

    - Most scary of all is Thai stories . Coz those are very "real" . suddenly blood come out from wall...blood come out from stones...all those movie aiyo....my 9 lives not enough to use leh

-Ang moh...hmm...okay la..some scary some not so scary la. Now all crazy about vampire and werewolves

Rigor mortis...I think I will definitely wont watch la especially .

Am surprised Anay not scared. But then anay seen real ghosts before so these special effect movies pose no challenge la.

Okay...my nenek kebayan story long enough yet ka? Longer than the post right? kakakaka

    2. Honestly the real ghosts are not as scary as the cinema ones as they don't blare out eerie music or horrible lighting effects!!!!!!! Humans are more scary than ghosts sometimes!!!

    3. hahaha, those "Happy Ghost" series cannot be considered as ghost movie lah, i think they are happy comedy more, haha.. but you are right Small Kucing, those sound effects can really kill.. because the unseen ones are actually more eerie than those that you can visually see, because they stays in your imagination and hardly fade off..

yes, Thai movies also quite scary because they created those eerie ambiance.. western ones, frankly, i don't really find them scary because mostly are zombies and draculas which are more "kan cheong" than scary i would say..

i think i have not really read a ghost story book before, but i guess would be scary because it's all in your imagination.. especially scary if you read it at night alone in the dimly lit room~~ :p

    4. Oh, I agree with you on that point. If it's a ghost movie, it's meant to scare people, so why incorporate funny scenes in it? Should get really serious then only consider professional.
Those half comedy half horror ones, like Scary Movie, I personally feel it's a waste of time to watch, sorry la I am trying to be honest here. Funny scenes are not funny, scary scenes are not scary, so what's the points of watching?? A bit 废 lo....

Like Ricky Hui, this supposed to be his movie which is written by him, but he died on the half way, so just cut off his part and Chin Sui Ho take it over!!!

    3. But now still can see the Mr Vampire series in YouTube anytime!!! They got the whole series of it!!! =]

    4. actually i find the whole movie too violent and too many blood, that i find disgusting.. the final part, i actually think it's quite "puzzling" lah, the guy fought with the vampire, errr, a bit like 想怎樣先現在??!! lor, hahaha.. oh yeah, this movie is a tribute to Ricky Hui and also 林正英, i so missed the 80s vampire series with all of them together.. so nice!!

    2. There's this movie, I can't recall the title, maybe it is Mr Vampire. That one really full of comedy and scary lor... if to compare nowadays ghost movie, I guess many of us would prefer the 80's one.

    3. 開心鬼 is sure not scary at all lah, i think it's rather comedy than horror film, haha.. i mean those 殭屍先生 series, bet you didn't dare to watch last time, haha!! hmmm, i think you are referring to 殭屍先生 right?? i remember they were shown during the CNY and has to change the title to 一見發財, yet many people went to watch during CNY :)

    2. Japan's ghost movie not really entertaining right? Too subjective and we really get puzzled sometimes by the story line. Their ghost and even horror movie always make us think why is like that and so on. So besides scared us off a few times and the producer will end the movie like - the person is actually have this kind of sickness and so on. I'm fine with that conclusion but not for all the movies right? Probably this is their art of deliver their horror and ghost movies to us.

    3. yeah, the Thai are good in making ghost movies, have been watching quite a number in the cinema and they were good, really scary.. as for the ang moh ones, errr, most of the time i think they are more 刺激 than 恐怖 lah, probably the way the visualize the spirits, haha!! until lately the two directed by Malaysian director James Wan, only i can feel the real 恐怖.. he's making things more unseen and stays in your imagination, i guess that's more scary.. as for Japanese production, i deeply remember The Ring, that scene when Sadako crawled out from the well and out of the TV, boy, that's super duper scary~~ :D

  25. Oh nice ah this Rigor Mortis? It's dead serious and not funny right? Cos I dont like comedy ghosts movies!

    1. some say nice some say not nice, so it's quite subjective lah.. it's a serious one but a little of comedy elements, just that little bit within the dialogue that doesn't spoil the movie..

  26. Always like a good ghost story!! I usually like Chinese and Thai ghost stories. More scarier than their western counterparts.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes yes!! i agree with you.. the western ones somehow not as scary huh?? but the recent two directed by James Wan were quite scary also, maybe he's a Chinese and influenced by the chinese ghost stories, haha~~ :D

      Delete
    2. I don't agree lah as I find many Chinese ghost movies a bit childish and too artistic. They seldom blast loud music that could bolt you out of your seat. The Thai and Korean horror movies could sometimes rank above the Chinese and English ones too. Just my 2 cents.

    1. i guess last time it all depends on the makeup skills but nowadays the ghost movies have to rely on the CG effects.. maybe that's the difference, and the latter tends to go overly-CG sometimes..

I dare not watch horror movies, I cannot sleep after watching them and I will imagine many horrible things, that time I watched the Japan movie "The Ring", the sadako scare the hell out of me and I have to sleep whole night with the lights on. Especially those horror movies with very loud and eerie sound effects.

    1. haha, yeah, sometimes those sound effects can be very scary, and especially if you cannot see what you are imagining.. but i'm not that bad that i need to turn on the light to sleep, the tiredness will kick in and i will quickly fall asleep without "energy" to still think about the movie i watched~~ :D

  41. Ghost movies, I like, JJ also likes. Since our dating time, until now, JJ still bought many ghost DVD to watch with me, when both girls go to sleep. Mostly, we watch HK one. Occasionally we watch Korean and Hollywood one. By the way, I also like Singapore ghost movie eh!

The scariest movie is What lies beneath, starring by Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. I watched that at KLCC many years ago. I stayed at Mandarin Oriental hotel that time for short training, after that movie, my husband (then bf) went back to Taiping. I stayed alone in the hotel. Mid of the night, I banged at my colleague's room, I asked her to let me sleep with her, because I was too scared to sleep alone after watching What Lies Beneath.

Have you watched this film before?

    1. Gosh! I couldn't help laughing at this timid Yannie having to bang the colleague's door at night! Yeah don't play play lah. If we feel scared at night inside the hotel or our bedroom, high chances those invisible beings are present lah!!
