22.07.2013 | 可惡司機

[Volume 8 Issue 7, #1758]
saw a news report by a foreign media the other day, results of a survey did on hired cars last year ranked malaysian taxi service as the top worst among asian countries!! i actually wasn't surprise with the result at all, i even think we actually can't "deserve" it more.. especially taxi drivers who refuse to charge by running the meter but offered you a ride with an exorbitant fare, or even running on meter but that machine was already modified, we can clearly see how not conscientious the drivers could be.. next, the drivers can refuse to take the passenger to a place they don't like to go, or perhaps they need to passenger to direct them to the destination instead, we can clearly see how not professional the drivers could be.. then, the drivers may not intend to give you the exact change, or they even ask for extra fares because they will need to go back downtown without a passenger from your place, we can clearly see how lack not trustworthy the drivers could be.. last week i was so unlucky that i met such a taxi driver (besides unable to get any minions), he "scored" four out of the six vices mentioned above!! i was really pissed off and hence i demanded to have every single sen clearly changed back to me, regardless how unhappy he was, i still can't hold it but to condemn his attitude.. lucky he did not drive his car and hit me from the back, haha, well you know he could always do that!! anyway, i just truly think that the authorities concerned should more strictly govern the professionalism of our taxi drivers.. :)

  2. Don't want to tell my long story again about how a KL taxi driver tried to provoke me into a fight - young man bullying me, an old man. Tsk! Tsk! Suffice to say, they're daylight robbers, crooks!!! But to be fair, there are some very nice and friendly ones...and I would say that MOST of the polite and nicer ones are Malays - always so pleased with them that I would ask them to keep the change or give them a tip.

    1. I agree with the Food Mayor of Sibu that Malay taxi drivers are often polite and nicest but many often got lost as they were new to KL streets. LOL.
I would say the Indian taxi drivers are most friendly and talkative to entertain me while my own race of drivers could be scariest!!!

    2. Correct, I agree to Anay. I also Indian taxi drivers are friendlier and talkative .

Thank Goodness, I so far so good, I no encountered any bad experience with KL taxi drivers.

But then, I had an expectation that they might simply charge me, so I just closed an eye, as long as they brought me to the place I wanted to go.

    3. Yan,
      Me too.

So far I've been lucky I guess.

Only got one time, got "unlucky" got on a taxi with a hamsap driver who felt like he had to declare his interest to me. Eeeewwwwwww!!!

But I never had any bad encounter. YET.

Anyway, taking the blue taxi got better service than red/white taxi.

Pay a bit (a lot) more though. :P

    4. Hmm...I feel Chinese Malay or indian also similar. Depend on character punya. Some chinese can be very friendly....some even"over" friendly leh.

Last time when I come back from work ...when tired , i would take cab. some friendly taxi driver will agree to go and no extra charges. Some will say traffic jam la this and that...ask for extra money. But then since exhausted from whole day working so no mood nor energy to argue la

    7. What wenn said about London taxis is true. I googled for the world's best taxi and found it is LONDON!!!

Retaining their number one position for the fifth time in a row, the iconic London black cabs bagged the top spot for cleanliness, knowledge of the area, quality of driving, friendliness and safety.

The survey also revealed that over 13 per cent confessed to 'becoming amorous' in the back of a cab in the UK, which is well above the global average of 6 per cent.

Among the strange items being left behind in the cabs were an accordion, knickers and condoms!

    9. The London black can driver has to through stringent selection process and interviews and tests before he/she can drive a black cab. It is good to ensure that the image is protected and uphold. Right, Anay?

    10. It's good la....if this is the case i think The Bluebird cab in Indonesia is emulating the London cab. They will be fired if any customer complaints. Anyway, they wouldnt wanna loose their job coz there hard to find work. You dont want then hundred others will wanna work. So theircab driver will be more "alert" and cautious lor

    1. This topic got me excited and I went on to Google the TOP 10 Worst Taxi Drivers to hear more information and its accuracy. Here is what I gathered from this website: http://www.londoncabs.co.uk/10-countries-with-the-worst-taxi-drivers/

      1. Kuala Lumpur drivers
Drivers from Kuala Lumpur are well known for overcharging clients and detouring. Even though they are supposed to charge by the meter, many drivers refuse from doing so. The best advice is to simply wait for another vehicle if the driver resists from using the taximeter. Cars in Kuala Lumpur can often be rather old and in poor condition.

      2. Drivers in Rome
Rome comes next, and the biggest reason for this is because most people cannot even find a vehicle available in Rome. Cars are scarce and the drivers are often rude and difficult to deal with. If it’s raining, expect to pay double or triple the price for a vehicle in Rome.

      3. Drivers in Bangkok, Thailand
Although many consider Bangkok, Thailand to have some of the best minicab drivers in the world, there are many drivers and tuk-tuk drivers that do not know the way. Some travellers expect that they get lost on purpose for a larger fare, but the truth is that many drivers in Bangkok are out of work farmers simply trying to make some extra money.

      4. Paris drivers
Paris France is another tricky city, because Parisian drivers are known for being rude and difficult at times. If you speak French, it’s obviously much easier to get around in the French capital. If not, it’s advised to print out your address on a piece of paper.

      5. Drivers in New York
Although New York minicabs are regarded for being cost effective and generally friendly, many drivers do not actually know the area and so the fare can be a lot more than what you expected.

      6. Mumbai drivers
Next comes India, but not because Indian minicabs are scarce. The Indian drivers will actually fight over your business, which is really not a good sign. On the negative side is the safety, which is not always the best in Mumbai. Many old cars don’t have seatbelts.

      7. Zürich Drivers
The next place on the list is Zurich. English is not always spoken, and Zurich minicabs are often quite expensive. Unless your destination is a very well known destination such as the airport or a very large hotel, come prepared with your own directions or hope that the driver has a GPS.

      8. Cairo drivers
In Cairo, Egypt, drivers are known for following people around and stalking them trying to get more business.

      9. Shanghai drivers
In China, you’d better have your destination written down on paper in Chinese, otherwise you are never going to find the destination that you seek.

      10. Moscow drivers
Finally, in Moscow, drivers can be inconvenient, but they are at least generally inexpensive and honest. Availability is not always the best and it can be really hard to find vehicles in some areas of Moscow. Many illegal cars are driving around in Moscow and trying to get your business, which you should avoid to any price.

    2. I felt that the given survey may not be very accurate as there are several cities not inside the list. A very simple one would be my own hometown Penang where the taxi drivers overcharge more than Kuala Lumpur ones besides their refusal to use meters! At least in Kuala Lumpur, you might find many of them using meters besides getting lost and taking detours by blaming the jams.

I'm wary about getting into a cab nowadays. I read that a good tip to stay safe for ladies getting into a cab is to make a call to a friend or family as soon as you get into a cab giving the cab registration number.

Many still look down on Indonesia but for me they have one of the most efficient taxi system.

They have this taxi company called bluebird. Just need to flag them down or call them they will come and pick you up. No haggling no refusal to go.

In fact, if you are not satisfied with the driver or the driver is rude to you or cheat you, you can lodge a complaint to the taxi company and the said driver will immediately be fired. That is the rules and regulation. Effiencient right? The company value their reputation more.
