FMCG: Is Marketing By Distributing Free Samples More Effective??
FMCG: Is Marketing By Distributing Free Samples More Effective??
"FMCG: Is Marketing By Distributing Free Samples More Effective??"..
"FMCG: Is Marketing By Distributing Free Samples More Effective??".. huh?? what an academic research oriented topic, but of course we are not discussing this here!! haha.. i'm getting into this topic from a very uncle perspective.. yeah, i got these free samples at the LRT station, yippee!! i mean myself as a grassroot consumer, instead of just seeing advertisements on newspapers or TV, no matter how catchy they are, i would be more delighted if i'm given free samples to try on (and probably would ask for extra sets to distribute to others too), hehe.. it's something like "done than said" which i find much more convincing.. and to advertisers, instead of spending more on papers and TV advertising (which most Malaysian spend less time on comparing to Facebook), perhaps it is wiser to have another strategy to distribute samples (freely, or free with conditions) to win words of mouth and testimonials from the users.. what do you think?? oopss sorry if you are looking for product review, i rarely do that, but i do always welcome free samples for me to try, muahahaha!! *evil grin*

  1. But for me those too new free sample I won't be dare to use, "you yong dou you deng yan yong zhor wo xin yong" scared mah!! So usually those free things I always wait until got youtuber talking about then only dare to try...(umm, I think mostly youtube one is more reliable as I always can see they even give negative comment about the product, not exactly negative but is just something not suit for certain type of skin or somewhat) Blogger one I still have some "hong gan bou lao" to belive!!

    3. i actually don't mind trying since the samples are just in small amount, and i always like to be the pioneer than the follower, hahaha..

ngo jan hai mmm meng nei up mud, nei bud yuu seh fan zhong man la~~

    4. me no qualms using free sample . But if those lotions and cosmetic products have to be very careful la. some people have sensitive skin so better be careful when using.

alamak...so many cantonese words....gotta puzzle out what talking about.

      Delete
    5. me too, actually it's sample so meant for try on mah.. i have no problem trying, and i guess that little amount won't cause too much harm to me, unless i have sensitive skin.. :)

      Delete
    6. Yah lo, the skin one really don't play play, especially the facial one, I would try only I've heard the name before, if those i've never heard before I'll be very hardworking go browse internet to check the review, but if the internet also have not much review about it, I won't apply on face as the product said, but I'll apply on my feet (okay, this's sound so crazy but if I throw them away I felt sayang, and if I gave my sister also i felt not good to give the products I'm so not sure to let my sister fry, because she's just buta-buta to try only never care)

That's one time I tried those facial product then I saw my face like not so right they I just pour all the liquid inside away then the bottle goes to recycle center, sigh!! Was thinking it should be a good product then who knows, really have to be 100% aware about it ya!!

  2. I think it is more effective this way because the potential consumer gets to experience the product first hand.

    1. yeah, and i guess most people when they see freebies, they would want to try them out.. the first hindrance of rejection removed right away..

    2. betul ...especially aunties like me. Take and use.

as long as they tarak ask pls fill up this and that form then we give you this free sample then I will most likely to take la. Unless the barang is irrelevant like diaper for baby....where am i going to use la.....LOL....take and keep one side meh.

      Delete
    3. yeah, if give freebies still need to ask me to do this and that and all the troubles, i think i won't have the patience at all but sorry, just forget about it~~

  3. Just like HyppTV giving Unifi subscribers free 30 days viewing. If you watch some of the channels, you get hooked and when the 30 days is up, chances are you will subscribe for the package. I got hooked on the Fox Crime channel and decided to pay extra.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank goodness my parents are more hooked up on the channels in Astro and my sister are on KBS. When the Unifi technician left my home in KL, we quickly dismantled the HyppTV decoder and chucked it out of sight.

      Delete
    2. just curious, how good is that HyppTV?? better than any streaming website that we can basically watch whatever movie we search for in full length??

      Delete
    3. I think the streaming websites are better in terms of variety and you don't get your movies censored for sensitive issues, So far I have terminated Astro due to bad service or rather no service during rainy or cloudy days. HyppTV also have those video on demand services which so far I have not tried because I hardly have time to watch TV :)

      Delete
    4. betul tu....astro also same. Give 30 days free trial then kids get hook on certain channel then parents will wanna subscribe.

They very darn clever leh. Their those package if you take A ...you have to include B & C... things like that la.

      Delete
    5. i think with the internet, there are actually so many movies and dramas to watch online huh??

      Delete
  4. Some free samples are more effective than others depending on what type of products. Food items like cookies/snacks (if they are good) will very likely result in the taster going to buy a packet. But beauty products like hand cream maybe not so much because these products need repeated use for you to feel the effect.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. betul what you have said.

hand cream and cosmetic stuff i take usually use for traveling lor. If wanna buy, I will buy my regular brand ...unless the stuffs is very good la.,

sorry ah SK ...detour talk women stuff....if they give sanitary pads then most likely i will take and try. if good will switch brand la.

Biscuit punya....so so la. If after testing the free sample and it taste good...then saw in supermarket and IF price is right then will buy la. If price too expensive or not easily available then i wont bother to go find lor.

      Delete
    2. yeah, of course there will be different marketing strategy for different kind of products.. and food surely will be more effective when they have free tasting sessions especially in the supermarkets..

      Delete
  5. But then again, after trying the samples some of us will simply forget about it. That's why I feel that for food items especially if they give free samples at the supermarket for tasting, higher chance of customer going to the shelves to buy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. you are right, the place where your distribute the free samples is also an important consideration.. i guess this product chose the LRT station for the volume of passengers flow..

      Delete
    2. but if food stuff or drink...sometimes they also have kiosks at the same LRT station selling those biscuits and drinks right?

Adui....now my mind kena brainwashed by wanda coffee. That day in LRT after and before the standard Charter Kuala Lumpur Marathon event ..in the train kept playing the wanda coffee ads. Now I dont think i will forget the coffee. wouldn't it be good if they would distribute the coffee sample there...at least i can try and set my mind at rest...no more the song "waaaaannnnnnda coffeeeeee~~~~" playing in my head

      Delete
    3. yeah, i actually think the LRT stations are a good place for this because of the passenger flow.. just within minutes you can actually distribute your free samples and then setting up booth there is also a nice idea..

      Delete
  6. Daily post, yes?

Hmm, today already starting to crack my head thinking of what to write, coz I seldom get free samples, except free food tasting/sampling from hypermarkets..

    1. The trend I see now is advertising in FB.. Not only eateries or come products, even blogging and giveaways..

They always say, “Like us on FB and stand a chance to win xxx bla bla bla yada yada yada”.. Or “Like us on FB, then tell us why you deserve to win, follow us on Instagram, repost and share it to your friends” ..

Aiyoh, I was like, sau-pei lah, have to go thru so many darn steps, so much hassle, better don’t advertise/organize giveaway la..

      Delete
    2. I don’t know about you guys here, maybe it’s just me, so don’t get offended..

Whenever I see this kinda statement: Like us on FB, then follow us on FB, blog & Instagram, then report and share to friends, get your friends to like their FB, comment why you deserve to win, yada yada, aiyoh, sau pei lah..

Unless that person is too free, has nothing to do, or desperate to win that something, then please go ahead, but not for me kua..

      Delete
    3. If you are sincere to advertise/do a giveaway, make it as simple as possible, please..

Please be a kind person :)

      Delete
    4. So, in order for us to try the samples, please make it as simple as possible lor.. Just like the recent products I got to review, it was very simple.. The fella didn’t ask a lot, she just emailed me to ask if I’m interested, if yes, provide mailing address and they will send the products.. I did it, and really, after 3 days, the package arrived to my office liao..

Easy.. No questions asked.. No need to click “Like” in FB la, follow in Instagram la, become a follower in FB la, repost la, share in wall la, ask friends “Like” and comment la, yada yada..

      *yawn*

      Delete
    5. Free samples, yep, who doesn't like? But depends on the product too.. if it's something to be applied on the face, like face cream or moisturizer, I have to see properly first, see what it's made of, etc.. Or if it's something to be consumed, like (dieting) pills or whatever pills, OMG, better think twice before even taking it lor.. I mean, come on la, you dare meh, to consume pills distributed free to you? Even if vitamins pun, have to think twice..

      Delete
    6. Now very "hing" rite, in FB, they always say "muka gebu" (face smooth like baby skin), they are selling this face cream.. To be really honest, I was tempted to buy, after looking at their baby-smooth face..

P/S: You can do the same with Camera Apps - Camera360

Really, you get this muka gebu effect, and it's so darn smooth.. No blemish, no wrinkles, nothing.. Perfect skin..

      Delete
    7. Ok, confession time.. I really purchase a set from my colleague, who is kam ngam distributing it.. She claims it will make the face gebu gebu and smooth..

Verdict? The first few days after using it, yes !! Memang smooth and gebu sangat, I can see results in just 1 day! The next day, my face was so smooth, it was unbelievable.. But as I continued using it, "farn hau kor" liao, rashes and pimples begin to grow leh.. So I stopped using liao..

I'm actually worried after using it for a few days.. Coz I was thinking, what the heck made the skin so damn smooth after 1 day of applying it? Steroid? Or any poison thingy mou? No brand somemore.. Worried also..

      Delete
    8. yeah, i so agree with you.. if want to give then give it for free directly lah.. don't let us do this and that, and in the end, just say you "STAND A CHANCE" to win only.. those i really will not bother at all..

      Delete
    9. hard o give direct also in FB . FB so many people will go requesting for the sample if that is the case.

Yea...those STAND A CHANCE to win usually waste of time la. more that `10k people share those ...how la.

Think they purposely to do this is to get the name of their brand out....so that when repeatedly see in FB or what ever media social ...people will be brain washed to buy their products. . Not really giving out prize la. Guess that is kedekut marketing method la. Biggest exposure with the least cost.

LOL...at least tarak like a certain co as you join in treasure hunt and have to pay for it punya and you blog about it leh....

      Delete
    10. yalah, especially those in FB that need you to like and share the post then baru say you stand a chance to win 10 of the freebies.. aiyah, i think many are just getting people to like and share, and i doubt they really giveaway the prize..

      Delete
  7. Tsk, at the very least don't blank out the brand logo in the picture lah, really wasted they give you the samples for free hahahaha XD

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No free advertising for them mah...

      Delete
    2. of course no free advertisement here lah.. want to advertise then must pay lah.. they gave me the samples to use, never asked me to review, haha!! :D

      Delete
    3. no money no talk dei, RG. Of course blank out la. What for free ads for them...LOL

pandai SK. If say wanna give you for review must ask for more leh...one packet and one small bottle not enough leh

      Delete
    4. yalah.. give me two little samples only then want me to do review?? hahahaha, i rather not take that then~~ :p

      Delete
  8. Yup , I do agreed that's a good idea as people can really see and try the products. Just like those coffee samples at the supermarkets and malls. Hahha. .. However , unless the products are really good it can be a double edge sword. If the product is lousy then the company ends up on the losing end. Wasted samples and it's like tell the whole world the product is not good.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Chris, I agree! Only if the product is good then only people will like it and buy it.

      Delete
    2. Phong Only if it's a good product. If its lousy, the efforts will turns against the company.

      Delete
    3. actually this is a 50/50 thing to the advertiser, either people like it or hate it.. but to the consumers, this is definitely good, because we can use the product for free before buying.. if like sure buy, if don't like then we won't have to take the risk of buying something we do not like..

      Delete
    4. How to define good product? what is good for one may not be good for another. Like wet wipes...some use it no problem but some use it may have rashes. All these depend on individual la.

Free sample of handsanitiser....some like it with nice scent some doesnt like any scent.

But I do agree with you there la. It is a double edge sword. Not because of bad or good products but rather whether consumer will like it or not.

Anyway....it's still advertising la....people passby people see the brand and it sort of stick to their sub-concious mind. Next time they see in the store and if price is right they might just buy it

      Delete
    5. yeah, with the free samples, the advertisers may actually test water and is a good way to promote new products.. and the consumers can actually try on and don't have to play teka-teki whether the new product is worth buying.. just use and know already..

      Delete
  9. Another thing is they have to employed and trained people on marketing the products unless the have their sales force stationed there. This could take up their sales force resources on their usual tasks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The promoters must be well versed with the product to answer queries from customers. Some customers are quite well versed about certain things and ask relevant questions. I have come across promoters who are not able to deal with these basic questions.

      Delete
    2. Some just employ students who will just ...eerr.. aahh... im not sure....!

      Delete
    3. i guess they will just most of the time hire casual workers like RM50 a day to help distribute their samples.. their sales and marketing team most probably has more important things to do, haha~~

      Delete
    4. usually i think they hire those part timer la...hence if you ask more indepth question the "staffs" most likely be "arrr....."

Co just wanna give the product out. Hey...it also kirea as a good marketing survey la. See if people will accept their products or not

      Delete
    5. yeah, very true.. anyone can actually do this kind of job, so just hire part timer and they are not expected to answer questions..

      Delete
  10. Some people will.just greedily help themselves with the products by taking a lot of the samples. This will end up being 'robbed' instead of promoting. I am sure the booth attendance will try not be rude to repeated takers and they also wanted to finish distributing the goods and knock off.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This reminds me of something related to advertising. You know those people who are hired to distribute flyers? Some of them simply dump a whole stack into mailboxes just to finish their jobs faster. Whoever hired them is sure very rugi.

      Delete
    2. Phong - yeah lor. You hired them for a reason but there may be some irresponsible ones who wanted to cut short the work.

      Delete
    3. yea betul what you said. Sanitary pad......sometimes can see men going asking for sample. Yea yea....give wife or sister use.

Some will just take take take...tough not sure if wanna use or not. Guess we need to self monitor la. cannot be so kiasu. Take liao then dont like ...throw one side? so wasteful leh

      Delete
    4. so true.. even want to give out things for free, also must have the proper control.. everyone just take one and it will be a disaster if they are going to create a chaos of everyone fighting for the stuffs.. even just simple distribution has to be managed well.. if others see such a mess, the impression marks already greatly deducted..

But i think this website marketing strategy very good la. at least they have genuine people taking sample and giving relevant feedback which can be use for their future marketing strategy

Today talk about freebies! Yesterday talked about free smells!! Tomorrow??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That was very generous of them to give you a bottle and a pack of wipe-ass! I would be happy to get them. This reminds me during my student days in US where they often had mobile booths of mascots giving out valuable loots like a pint of milk, box of cereals or pies!! I would queue up 2-3 rounds to fill my school bag and went home happily!!

I bet Ah Boy not so bangsat and kiasu like Anay!!

      Delete
    2. If you ask an advertising guy like me for my opinion, I would say that those ads on TV and newspapers are the least effective and so damn costly!!! The amount of those medias spent would be better to hire roadshows with loud speakers and give out freebies from town to town. Everyone will talk about it and the whole family get to feel & use actual sample. The mileage is BETTER!!!!

      Delete
    3. I am not saying that newspapers don't work but they cater for different segment market for different products. Properties are good to advertise in newspapers and high end magazines!

      Delete
    4. Anay, I thought your student days in US, you would get freebies like condoms that glow in the darkness or protruding thingy that gave you different sensation, no? US students were give a pint of milk and a box of cereals or pies, so healthy one!

    5. Between facebooks and blogs, which media is better to advertise??? Majority of the blogs of course!!!

    7. Good morning Anay..not as late as me.

TV ads no use to me as no longer watch TV. FB marketing still ok la ...only if it is a major brand la.

paling effective is freebie la. betul what anay say.

Like my MIL sometimes when she gets freebies in hypermarket she will tell us eh this and that brand free bie in xxx supermarket...nice la...can buy... so we sorta indirectly kena influenced also leh

      Delete
    8. yeah, newspaper and TV advertising must be very expensive, though i have no idea how expensive that can be.. furthermore, nowadays less and less people are reading newspaper and watching TV.. better advertise in social media.. of better still, for the benefit of grassroot consumers like me - just give me samples to try on lah.. :D

oh, free milk and cereals?? that one i like~~ :)

  18. Who doesn't like freebies? My customers would love it when we give them freebies. They get to try some new stuff. This is one effective way of promoting new stuff.

  19. Hello Sk,

Next time I get free samples I will give them to you because I just take but never use at all. So giving free samples is not effective for people like me who likes to stick to using what they have been using for ages. So I will just take the free samples and put them in a box and forget about them unless I know someone wants them, I will give them to that person. Once in a while, I will look through the box and throw away those samples that have expired.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hello mun, if you are not going to use those samples, then why did you take them in the first place?? just reject politely and then let others behind you have the chance to take the samples instead of keeping them in a box and then throw them away when they have expired.. naughty mun, wasted all the stuffs.. hahahaha!! :p

      Delete
    2. You don't know ah? The last time I rejected these promoters politely, I kena scolded and chased by them saying why so ba bei, we give you take lah. So easy also so ba bei. Lucky I did not kena whack by them so from that day onwards I takut already. They wanna do their job to give out these free samples, I take only loh since once they finish giving out all, they can pak si fat and sau kong and go back home.

      Delete
    3. oh, that was no good being scolded, they are so rude to do that on you.. if i were there, i will make sure i am to whack them instead of them whacking me!! but second thought, if you want to help the promoters to finish their job earlier so they can go home, it's also a conflict to the advertiser and mother earth that you don't use and throw them away.. that's really not environmentally friendly huh?? hehehehe~~ :p

      Delete
    4. Helping them to finish their job early is secondary to me fearing kena whacked by them. Of course I try to give the samples to other people lah if anyone wants. I am not strong like you, if you, of course you can whack them instead of them whacking you. :D

      Delete
    5. Talking about being environmentally friendly, that is another issue. Some products even the manufacturing process is already not environmentally friendly so better not to support those products. After the products have been manufactured, I am sure they will have expired products unsold which have to be disposed of so those samples are kacang putih only in the large scheme of the environmentally friendly picture.

      Delete
    6. yeah, then even not supposed to support those that you think are not environmentally friendly, DO NOT even bother to take their samples and keep at home.. keep and then throw away, you are doing double the sin~~ hahaha!!

      Delete
    7. Like I say self preservation from kena whacked is more important. Stay alive another day to save the environment is better than being maimed or dead, wouldn't you say so too?

      Delete
    8. Oh, putting this comment here so that when you reply I get an email notification.

      Delete
    9. hahaha, everyone has their point there but for myself, i guess being proactive is better than just reactive.. and make sure you stay alive another day to save the environment and not harm it, hehehehe!! have a great weekend ahead~~ :)

      Delete
    10. Hello SK, you have a good weekend too! But on a deeper level, come to think of it, the only way a human can really not harm the environment one bit is to be dead because like it or not, as long as humans use fuel and plastic products, we are already harming the environment and also with the trash we dispose everyday.

You are doing your bit to save the environment already at this point in time by not having more humans to consume endlessly and creating more trash on earth.

    1. well, if the product is good i think people will not mind to even do free promotion and recommendation for them, and the words of mouth is one of the most effective way.. i sure believe Small Kucing has done a lot of product review and know which one is good and which one is no good.. :)

  25. LRT station also can get free stuff ar? So good! Usually people distribute freebies in the shopping mall.. But it's a good strategy also la since LRT station is also packed with people everyday.

I agree, in order to sell the product effectively it's best to give some free samples to try, or at least share people's testimonials, rather than just copy paste what the leaflet say. That's what I believe when I started my online business. I even give my customers free stuff to try if he/she purchase more than one item. And for those close friends, I'll sure give them free, but because most of the items I sell don't comes with sample size so usually I need to give the free item after I purchase the item myself. I also need to earn ma so I cannot simply give free items to everyone.... It depends la.

Anyway, speaking about getting freebies, what you got is consider lucky and convenient, cause they distribute to you by hands. But many brands usually require you to fill up a form then print it out then bring to the counter to redeem one. I find this very inconvenient may be because I am from a small town where a lot of brands/choices are not available here. For those staying at big bity sure no problem la. I just think if they are sincerely giving free samples at least try to widen the areas of availability.... =)

Hmm, of course I wasn't expecting a review from you, since I remember you mentioned before you don't do review (Eh that means if I send you my paper mask you also won't write any review lo? Haahah xD) Plus I think with what you got (cleansing wipes and a sanitiser?), it's kinda hard and 抽象 to write a review la right? :p
