i don't cook and i don't bake like many bloggers out there do, and because of that, chances that i go to a market is nearly zero.. the number of times i go to a market is countable, and for your information two times (as a tourist) last year, once in Tokyo and once in Osaka, which means i've not been to our market at all last year, geez!! first, i dislike our always dirty, stinky and wet markets.. second, i think i am a dumb inside markets, because i am one that cannot differentiate the varieties of vegetables or fishes.. on the leafy ones, sawi or kailan or spinach or (the lately the people's hot topic) kangkung etc, they all look the same to me.. i would have thought myself given spinach if i asked for it but when the stall owner gave me kangkung instead.. and on fishes, they all are just fish to me.. i can only differentiate pomfret from others because of the shape, and when they are cut into pieces, i can only tell it's salmon and not others because of the orange color.. of course this won't happen in supermarkets because they are always labeled, but if the labels are wrong, i would have thought i bought the correct ones.. that's how pathetic i am, and explains i am surely not gifted to work in a kitchen, haha!! :D

    1. Eh, you can't cook (or bake) well also you can go to market la.. Ok, not market, but hypermarket la..

Tell you 1 thing, I never step my foot in the wet market before also.. I only buy stuff from the hypermarket.. At least everything is labelled in the hypermarket, and I don't have to sweat about it.. Just take, weigh, campak into your trolley, and go! Senang ma..

But if you wana buy oink oink then harder a bit la if no wet market.. If go to non-halal section in hylermarket, only got luncheon meat or minced meat, but don't have the big chunks of meat la..

      Delete
    2. Confession: I also cannot differentiate many types of green vege and also the types of fish, but if you go to hypermarket, at least they are all labelled..

Wet market leh, if you want face, or scared no face, I un geh.. Coz if you go to wet market, already a lot of "si lai" hogging the fish-monger to choose (and buy) fish, you somemore "chor teng" wana join in the crowd, then when it's your turn, you ask the fish-monger "Uncle ahh, which fish should I buy if I want to make fish porridge", or "Uncle ahh, what is the name of this fish ahh", or "Uncle ahh, how to see the fish fresh or not".. Wah, sure you kena cursed.. Haha..

      Delete
    3. I also get my mum to buy fish for me, coz I also cannot differentiate the fishes.. Hak chong la, pak chong la, sekk pann la, mayau la, hung jou la, tong sat la.. Wait, tong sat is keli, keli I know la the pattern.. But like you said, other fish, when they are cut, it looks the same lor.. I also cannot differentiate actually..

When colleagues going out for lunch to "kiu soong", I also cannot differentiate and and to just keep quiet and let them decide.. They are always talking about patin la, "fei zhau" yue la, etc.. I also dunno one leh actually.. So just go with the flow nia..

    4. So I belif you sekali buy everything in the supermarket rite.. Don't say you, I'm also like that.. I am sure you shop for basic groceries rite, like potatoe/carrot/tomato/onions, to make ABC soup? As for the chicken, you can also buy in supermarket ma, the guy will chop for you also, and you can shop in air-conditioned environment..

Wait, you know how to boil soup rite? Gourmet-like fried rice also you fried before, then pou tong is wet-wet-water nia, yes?

Cook maggi-mee also you can add in nutricious meat and vege inside ma.. Like if you cook maggi mee, you can cook with your ABC soup (but I am sure many will like the MSG packet soup, hehe), throw in some green vege and some meat balls, then can eat liao.. Yue peng, yue dann, choy sum, then add 1 egg, ok jugak, kan?

      Delete
    5. Talking about maggi-mee now, well, I guess many will use the MSG packet for the soup, coz that's what people buy maggi-mee for rite, hehe.. If me leh, I always buy a lot of yee-mein, bihun and other types of eggy-noodles (like wantan mee type)... Then when I boil ABC soup (or any other soup), I will put into glass jars, freeze it (if can't finish it).. Then when I need it, I will thaw the soup from the freezer, cook my bihun or noodles with the home-made soup, throw in some green vege, fish cakes and meatballs, then it turns into a healthy MSG-free soup noodles..

See, not good in cooking also can be forced to cook in a way one.. See you wana do or not jek.. If you don't bake, well, you can always steam.. There are many steamed cakes recipe out there from "Mr G"...

      Delete
    6. If lazy to "open wok" to cook your own dinner, then steam lor.. Use the 2 or 3 tier steamer.. Senang dou..

1st layer boil soup (kuan tong) with just ikan bilis, spinach and wlkfberries..
2nd layer steam water egg maybe (or minced oink steamed egg), 3rd layer steam brocolli with carrots maybe (then add in shallots oil once done)..Or you can steam fish with store-bought tomyam paste, or taucu paste or whatever paste you can find.. Else, can just steam fish with ginger and garlic, kautim... So there, you get your home-cooked healthy steamed dinner in less than 20 minutes liao, easy mou?

You everyday eat out for dinner also eat until sien lor.. Sometimes will teringin eat simple home-cooked food also kan?

Like me, everyday eat out for lunch also sometimes will be sien.. On days like that or once in a while, I just stay in office, drink milo "dim" soda peang, ok jugak..

      Delete
    17. it has to depends on what you are buying, some are found only in hypermarkets and are cheaper, some are only found in wet markets and are cheaper.. but for me still, i think i can go to hypermarkets everyday even if i have nothing to buy but going to wet market is such a rare occasion for me~~ :p

    20. Tarak masuk office la this two days so cant on pc spam tdy beh tahan si spam here lo.

      Tuk tuk phone n spam.

I dun like buy fish from hypermarkets . Bought twice. Both times have mud smell. Whole fish have to throw away. But if kerang, hypermarkets better coz can see cheaper and sometimes bigger size.

Yes it depends on what barang we want. Some can find in hypermarkets some can find in wet market. I like wet market coz if cannot find eg bunga kantan, I can always go tovthe next stall and buy. But if hypermarkets. .tarak means tarak...hv to cari from other hypermarkets. .

Like the other day kns betul. I wanted to buy a few arrowhead shoots to cook. Saw there are boxes if it in hypermarkets. I ask the staff where are the loose ones. The lazy bum replied no loose ones coz the manager cuti hari ni.kita tak boleh buka boxes. Mak oi...if the manager cuti one whole week then biar the vege rotten in the boxrs is it??? That is what I dont like. Some staffs hv tidak apa attitude.

But if wet market usually own business they will layan more la. Some even gv some choong and cili padi for free. But then some vendirs can be fierce too la. As I said it depends lo.

Like taufu..I will go to pasar to buy. Also same goes for pork. Chicken I will buy from hypermarkets coz cheaper.

I like go pasar becsuse at times I will discover some vegetables thatI never seen before . The vendors will teach me how to cook the vegetable. They really have good tips leh sometimes. Like once the vendir taught me to put a dash of cooking wine when frying siew bak choy as it enhance the taste. Will taste like restaurant cook punya. And true enough leh.

  2. Good morning SK and everyone... As for me, i hardly cook and bakes, unless i have the mood, most of my meals are taken outside... If u ask me what's the name of the fish when in market, i won't know, as like what you mention, supermarket they label the name, that's where i get to know the name of the fish... And also goes to veg. they put sign there to indicate the name of the veg.

    3. Lol.... yeah hypermarkets n supermarket hv proper label on the vegetables and fish. Not like pasar.

Funny thing in pasar is one type of vegetables can have two or three names. Like sai kan...some call kan choy. Yim sai..some say heong fa choy. Can be confusing at times.

  3. I am not good at names as well...except perhaps for the common ones and some I know in English or Malay but not in Chinese. :(

    1. It depends, some vege and meat more fresh when buy it at morning market, like my uncle (my mom's brother) he's selling vege at morning market, early in the morning he has to go the big market there to pick what vege to sell!!! He's an expert picker, those vege he pick can store in the fridge for more than a week and taste different, not like those buy from other stall, can't even last for 1 or 2 days!!!

      Delete
    2. If jadi housewife or SAHM (stay-at-home-mum), then go to market everyday is good la.. Can get fresh food there ma.. But usually, I think people (with no time) buy once a week..Food in the fridge enuff to last them for a week, and they only sekali go to the market one time during the weekend..

      Delete
    3. I used to go with my mom to morning market if I've time in the morning!!! So I kinda know which stall she goes, which stall to buy what, hehe!!! Thus she only spent half an hour in the market then she already can get all vege and meat enough to cook for a week, super expert...we always ask her "why are you so fast?" =.=!!!

    4. My mom goes once in a week le!!!

    5. I have always envy and wanted to become a SAHM too, but cannot lor, need to work.. Unless my hubby is a dato' or very rich la, then I no need to work lor.. Stay at home, everyday pickup kid from kindy, then go shopping+facial, I also want lor..

But in reality, cannot la, hehe, need to work.. So the foodstuff only buy once a week lor.. Everything wash, divide the portion, keep in freezer.. Everyday before going to work, takeout the meat or fish portion from the freezer, put in the fridge, and by the time come back, the meat will be soft liao, then can terus cook lor..

      Delete
    6. Normally my mom bought all the vege that my uncle picked from the big market, even my uncle also said those vege you bought are even more than those he sent to restaurant!!! =.=!!!

Cause we've three different types vege per dinner, it's okay for my to differentiate what type of vege it's!!! =]

I was the youngest and only one who often had to do laundry and cleaning up our 3 storey house when I was schooling. My older siblings were set free cos mother complained they were hopeless in marketing and doing household chores. Bluek!

    3. But then I dislike going to the wet market. It's so wet. I usually shop at the dry market in a shop. Still I always shop simply. Just grab, pay and go. I don't even negotiate!

    4. It's good to do your own marketing once in a while and try to cook once in a while too. It's a sort of satisfaction with your own cooking. I always cook simple dishes and I feel satisfied with my own cooking.

    5. yeah, i think it's good to do marketing once in a while, but due to my fear to the filthy and stinky wet market, i actually prefer grocery shopping in supermarkets, haha.. but having said that, i enjoyed the marketing when i was in Japan, so clean and so many things to see (which are not found in Malaysia)..

so i guess it's inevitable you need to do marketing and cook for your family.. so when are you going to pass over this responsibility to your girl, or most probably your future DIL's?? :p

  13. Good morning, the reason for me not going to market and cook myself was probably it is much more cheaper to eat outside. This happens same to me as I only know how to differentitate between salmon and other fish partly because of the orange colour~ Anyway, let's practice eat kangkung from now onwards.

you are true also, sometimes it can be more expensive if you cook yourself than having something to munch outside.. but when i was in UK, a few of us share the cost so it was cheaper to cook at home.. else, i'll just cook something that can last for a few days to save the cost.. you know i do not have like RM50k per 6-months to spend when i was studying..

By now I need to think a way of earning back those money bah, because what had past shall consider as past too. No use to dwell so much right? From now onward, i really need to be more mindful and think about my future d, no more play play liao being a 24 years old guy. Thank you so much for the encouragement, I will try to change as I'm imperfect too.

I never heard of Mr Lonely going to market or cook anything.

I used my conventional oven to heat up food, make it crispier :) My mum and my sis go to wet market , I only shop at the supermarket. I think I need to learn to go wet market as the prices/cost of living will be rocketing again..

In fact, if Yannie is still single right now, I will be just like you, SK.
Anyway, different people have different strength. You cannot be good in everything. SK is certainly good in programming, IT, handmade gifts, and lots of other hidden talent which SK's readers still don't know.

Anyway, I don't go wet market that often too. May be because I cook only on weekend. I buy most of my cooking stuffs from pasar malam.

  25. Hahaha, same here la SK! I hardly go to the morning market too, though I cook/bake sometimes :p
Like you, I can hardly differentiate the types of fish, as well as the vegetables which are green (Unless those very common types like spinach, cabbage and etc). I'll need to ask the seller which is which, haha xD
But even if I hardly go to the market, that doesn't mean I cannot cook la! Most of the times, I just utilise whatever available in the fridge (mum in law bought ones) and cook, :p
