2014.01.22 | 咪當我笨

[Volume 9 Issue 1, #1852]
i received an email few days ago, stating that it was from the bank requesting customers to update their account details.. being smart (ahem!!) of course i was not trapped, as i read the email, i already know it was a scam, thought i'm a dumb huh?? it's all four very simple but logical reasons..
  1. banks will never send you email to ask for details, even if they need to do so, they will spend money to send you an official letter for the correspondence..
  2. the email address was not from the bank's domain, and banks will probably not use abbreviations as their names..
  3. the content of the email was super simple, not official and even has grammatical error, how could a bank allow that to happen?? being long-winded and playing with words until you cannot understand what they are trying to say is the bank's style
  4. i've never registered with the bank using this email account, they will never know this email i used specifically for junk websites..
i would usually just delete such emails if i receive any, but that day i replied to that email showing a middle finger, hahaha!! care not if they will receive and read or not, at least i expressed what i wanted to say in heart, i actually find this photo above truly describe my thoughts at that moment, hehe!! lastly i would like to advise my readers, if you receive such email, you may not want to reply my way (but would be fun to do so), but please just ignore them.. if you are unsure of the authenticity then make a call to the bank to verify, do not ever let the bad guys have any chance!! :)

  1. Hmm, interesting topic today.. Let me story you..

Not only emails from bank thingy la.. Nowadays, I receive many emails starting with:
    1) Hi, my name is XXX, from XXX country, I have USDXXX to be invested in your country, and I would like to work with you with this amount of money and you shall get USDXXX as commission if the deal succeeds, bla bla bla..
    2) Hi, my name is XXX, from XXX country, I have no family members and I would like to make you the beneficiary for this USDXXX amount of money and you must promise me to make it into good use, bla bla..

I wonder how many idiots, oops, mind my language early morning.. Rewind..
I wonder how many farn-shue aka sweet potatoes have replied to these kinda emails.. Well, if it's for fun (just to see what the other fella reply), then ok la.. But if really get trapped jor, too late lor.. Nasi sudah jadi bubur, nobody can tolong lor..

    1. Then I am sure we have heard of cases where housewives (and also business women) kena con by online lover.. Asking them for money little by little, and 5king 5kok, these bimbos already transferred more than RM100k into the conman's account.. Chisin betul.. Uneducated desperate kampung girl housewives ok la, understood.. But please, business women? Study until degree study what oohh? Not "tak chek", but "tak sai" I think (study shit)..

I really behtahan when I come across this kinda news one lor.. So many people kena con so many times liao, why can't they learn their lesson ahh?

People make mistakes, but only fools repeat them.

    2. Somebody from my ex-company also another "tak sai" (study shit) one.. Manager position somemore.. I still remember her story clearly. Now, let me story you.

That day, konon her mood not good wer.. Kena lecture from MD giving her pressure why her dept. is not making sales.. Sales leh, got is got la, but the target tak sampai, something like that.. Her dept. used to be the top sales in the company one, but becoz of little bit target tak sampai, the MD asked her to go into the room and lectured her, so she "lau chan" la, and no mood konon... So that day, she drove her car around for fresh air..

So she sampai at this petrol station to pump petrol.. Then a salesperson came over la, her first sentence was "Congratulations, you have won a BIG gift, a car (yes, a car!), would you mind to spend some time and hear my explanation?"

She memang sudah no mood to work rite, and she didn't wana go back to the office so early, so ok lor, she wasted time at the petrol station to layan this salesgirl lor..

The salesgirl asked her to go to a shophouse near the petrol station to claim her "car reward"... She really followed the salesgirl into the shoplot wor.. Wah, lucky she didn't kena raped or robbed.. Holy..

And this is how the whole thing works.. They lure you into this shop, ask you to purchase some goods worth RM5k, then you get a chance to "win this car". They give you vouchers and scratch-cards, then you scratch on the spot, see can "win the car" or not..

Ended up, this bimbo manager bought RM5k worth of goods - a kettle, a vacumn cleaner, a pillow and an oven. She got a few scratch cards, and of course, she did not "win the car"..

She asked the girl for refund. Obviously, there is none..

I would have answered her "There's no refund for stupidity".

    3. Sorry, but I know my two komens above have nothing to do with bank thingy..

I am a long winded person la, very behtahan when I hear or see con news like that.. Coz it happened to people around me..

Really, there's no refund or turning back to stupidity, so please, put on your thinking hat, think twice and be "qin xin"...

There's no free lunch in this world..

    4. I myself personally kena before in a shopping centre in KL.. Can mention here ahh? Or sensitive? It's in Berjaya Time Square la..
I was shopping, and was approached by a guy. His first sentence was also, "Congratulations, you have won a free gift"..

Of course I told him I wasn't interested and there's no such thing as a free gift (without buying something else first).. He said "no, no, believe me, come come, it's just nearby"... He persuaded me into a shop inside the mall (quite well known brand of electrical items), so I felt "ok".. If the shop was not inside the mall, I wouldn't have followed him.

Inside the shop, he gave me a form to fill up, answer some general questions, and he gave me a free gift. I opened on the spot, it was a mug.

My case still ok la.. At least not kena con and I didn't have to pay anything before getting the mug..

    5. Another thing which I would like to story you guys - slimming centres..

Now they are using the same approach too.. You go into a slimming centre, and they ask you to pay RM10k for the session.. They guarantee you would look as thin as a hockey stick in 2 months.

After you have paid the RM10k, say, about a month later, they say "Congratulations, you can become our ambassador and appear in the posters in our centre and all".. BUT (there's a but), you must purchase another set of goods, around RM8k wor.. Coz this RM10k session almost finish, and you need those RM8k products to maintain your "thin-ness" in order to look thin in our posters.. So you purchase and paid another RM8k..

After you paid the RM8k, then only they say "Err, actually not you will become the ambassador, but you have the chance to become one.. Means you are entitled to have the chance to be selected as our ambassador".

Those spending above RM15k in our centre will "have the chance" to be selected.

      Puh-leeeese.

      Get the gist now?

      Delete
    6. Facial centres are also using the same approach.. But they are not so aggressive, and you can still feel they are "safe" (depends on individuals).

      Here's another story.

You sign up with this facial centre, coz your face is so full of freckles, blemishes and what-nots. They use this opportunity to hoo-haa about your face and say "wah, your face full of "hak pann" and "cheok pann" (freckles), you need at least 20 sessions to "smoothen" those freckles. Then they will say, oohh, not 1 shot pay RM6k, you can pay in monthly installments.. Ok, there, then you pay RM6k for this 20 sessions facials..

Susah is your own self lor.. Coz they use your credit to swipe, they get the money right away, but you yourself have to pay installment to the bank every month lor..Not pay installment to the facial centre (hello, they already got your money babe), but pay installment to the bank... You die, your hal lor..

Ok, fast forward.. After going thru about 15 sessions, they will say "Left 5 sessions only wor, you wana renew"? Then you say sorry, no money liao, don't wana renew lor.. Ok, they keep quiet for a while..

After 2 weeks, they will come and say "I understand if you don't want to renew, but we susah payah "cantikkan" your face until today's result.. Tak sayang ke if you don't want to continue? If you use over-the-counter products, then later your blemishes come back again wor.. Ok, nevermind, you want to purchase a set of serum, for your home use? You don't want to come for facial is ok, but you have to takecare of your face yourself. A set of serum cost RM4k, and can last for a month.

So there you go, you purchase the RM4k serum, and it only last for a month.. After a month, you feel if you don't continue, then you would have wasted all the money you invested on your face, so you go and buy another set of serum, pay another RM4k..

And you are planning to get another set next month, RM4k gone too...

Like I said, have to be street wise lor.. Hehehe.. Can act blur.. Can pretend stupid.. But mind must be "qin xin"..

My motto is simple ~ "Life is short. Just do it. Break the rules. Find your thrill. But know the boundaries. This too shall pass".

There are things in life (read: certain things) that you must experience once in your life time, then only you will be "kam yuin".. I don't have to go into details what are those things, but as long as we know what we are doing, then just do it. Just be smart (and don't get caught) *cheeky grin*

Wei u must masuk topic leh .. your comments out of topic no points with be given la.

I kena many these spam mail too. Some times I just delete sometimes I report as spam . But when I chi sin I will reply givecthe false information as in username and password s. Let them pusing kepala and happy for awhile.

The one sk highlighted is wrong domain name and links, grammar error is easy to detect la. But some are very good fakes that is hard to detect. The domain name very similar to whatever bank name.

And some banks doesn't make it easier for customers ..I don't know whether common or not but if I go public bank berhad website and I click their e-banking, it would lead me to www2.pbebank.com.my. if I don't know beyter I might think it leading me to a fake website. Why pbebank? Why nit publicbankberhad? Why www2? I didn't kniw there is a www2 till I come across this bank.

Many people tell me if do banking transaction I must look for the https instead of http coz https means secured wor. But me darn scaredy cat la. Even with https I still scared to do. If nit necessary I won't do online transaction lo. I rather go to the bank itself or go to the shop to byy.

Afterall how secured is our information online?

I had one credit card from xxxx bank and since the day I sign up, I received so many marketing calls from various co. Readers digest la, insurance la, hotel membership la this and that. I suspect maybe the bank shared my information with its subsidiaries.

      Delete
    24. I agree with sk on item 1 whereby banks will not simply email customers to ask for updates of personal information.

Banks are famous for their red tape leh. At times i find even our gomwn also kalah to the bank in terms of red tapes

Like the other day I need to change address. I wrote to my banks letters informing them to change my address. Terbalik I received calls PLUS formal letter from them saying that they can't do it due to bank nrgara rulings. I have to go personally to the banks and get my address changed

Gotta go fill out the forms and show NRIC then thumb print too. Only then did they "accepted" my application.

A wwek later I received formal letter from the banks sent to my OLD and NEW address informing that they have changed my address as oer request. If I did not request for the change if address I have to contact them.

I guess it is good la coz this way they guard themselves against external and internal fraud case.

So thinking about all that. I don't think banks will so easy and simply send email to their customers asking for their details la. Ecerythingvhave to be firmal.

And the bank now have speed up a lot leh. No need to wait for ages despite all the red tapes.

Back to the topic. Looks like sk and me same . Use separate email for banking and anither for junk and blogging.

Yea if banking email come to the junk email address I can close ine eye and press delete la.

But if come to the banking email address then I will open eyes lor. Easy to identify if I don't have account with that bank. Straight I can junk it.

But if I happen to have account with that bank I will scrutinise the email. See how they address me eg "hi" or dear messrs xxx. . The read the contents lo. Yea I know its most likely just fake but its cat nature to be curious lo. Wanna see what they tembak correct and what they tembak wrong. Some more imagination too active leh. Alwats will imagine that they somehow got my account information . Very chivken leh.

Me weird..some times when I received these email. I will cut and paste and forward to the relevant bsnks for their information. The funny thing is that the bank's firewall is too strong.bullet proof. Even my emails were bounced back as soam. That means their iT site already know about the spam email gua as I attached the soammer email address to there.

Lol...yea..banks letters tend to be long winded and have long words. Have to check dictionary to understand what they want. Funny thin is each words have special meaning for banks wor. Like some banks will kick your arse to ask u use their overdraft facilities ..hence comes terms like "under utilised" "inactive"...inactive means tarak use at all. Under utilise maybe means 1% used to 50% used.....so when I get letters from banks I will garu my coconut see whatvthey really mean...unless of course yhey send letter say their subsidiary have bla bls bla insurance or unit trustvto offer la. All of them are successful with own houses BUT they are so fussy with long list of expectations! HARLOW - THEY NEED TO LOOK AT THE MIRROR FIRST LA!!! Better stay single and enjoy a stress free life than getting conned online by fake lovers.

    3. Wwi cannot say ladies only leh...many hamsap men kena conned also leh . Butvtheir case highlight also nobody wanna care ma. For ladies if highlight then people will care more la coz used to be no common.

Both men and ladies also kena conned before la. Like the casein china. The man have online affair with a woman. Then meet up baru discover she is his daughter in law.

Eh u heard radio advertising a certain bank offering cardless withdrawal? Hmmm...I wonder how well it will work for those con artist. Now they don't have to open bank account leh. Just ask the lady/man to send them money through atm . I wonder if there are any additional security features to those transaction. ..otherwise. ..haiz..case ribut lo

  11. How come we never heard from Michael Chong that men got conned to deposit money to the lovers abroad whom they never met personally?? It's old men we heard that cheated their spouses and enjoyed flings with the China Dolls everywhere. They got their worths and not cheated.

  12. yes, I dislike scams as they seem to creep in easily into our mail box. Once I had an email address which was full of junks. I had already dumped that email address and use a new one.

  18. SK, thanks for the post, very good reminder to everyone. Smart like Yannie got conned too . It happened in last year only, I received an email just like yours, but it was from PayPal, asking me to update my bank account details and so on. In the email, there is link to my PayPal account. i actually ignored the first email, but the same reminder emails came to me multiple times through out the week. So, I thought it was real, as it also stated my account would be inactivated if I didn't login and update by that day. So I did so. Guess what happened next?

My PayPal account was having a dispute transaction on the following day. I knew it when it sent a transaction sms to my phone. It was an online shopping payment of RM25. Thank God it was only RM25 and not more, but I still logged a dispute transaction compliant in PayPal, PayPal refunded me. But now, I have stopped using PayPal, I have removed my credit card details from PayPal, I have also terminated my credit card and got a new one to replace after that.
