23.09.2013 | 施受之福

[Volume 8 Issue 9, #1792]
we often hear people say "it's more blessed to give than to receive", and this was what i saw painted on an old building in town yesterday, somemore in both english and chinese.. supposedly there isn't anything special, but take a closer look again at the signboard on the left, it's instead interesting to see this on the outer wall of a lottery company.. or shall i rather say, (I personally think) this saying painted on that wall indeed shows suggests irony.. who's to give and who's to receive then?? from the lottery company's point of view, of course they hope this encourage the public to give more.. on the other hand, being one of the public, i surely wish the company pay out prizes more often.. however, how many times have you ever heard of people manage to strike the big jackpot huh?? a friend once told me, in our neighboring country, once the jackpot hits an upper limit and if no one gets it, that would be paid to the government.. also many countries practice broadcasting the draw live through nationwide TV, which shows total transparency.. but just look at where we are, have you seen any?? instead it feels like just putting money into the pockets of that small group of people.. haiz!! but do you share the same view as me??

  1. Ironic!

Didn't quite get you on this though: a friend once told me, in our neighboring country, once the jackpot hits an upper limit and if no one gets it, that would be paid to the government..

Is this happening in your friend's country or our own?

  2. It is indeed to give than to receive cos you have the ability to give no matter how small it is... :)

    1. actually the chinese always say 施捨, but there is actually a slight different between 施 and 捨.. 施 is more about giving but 捨 is more about transferring what you do not need.. that's to me a slight difference because 施 is somehow more noble, haha~~

I duno la. Ppl say CNY play cards for fun lor..rm1 and a few sens. But then once kids got hook on that will become worse leh. Arent all gamblers start with small amount?

    3. yalah, small amount and for fun okay lah but cannot try luck as if making a living, that surely is not good.. cannot get hooked and must know where to stop lah.. like me, even gamble but few cents also i don't play.. 4D or lottery, only once in a blue moon just for fun :p

  5. oh, to give rather than to receive is a great feeling if seen in a different way. Here the irony is to give more but not even to receive even once. That's great for them. Yet people who go for 4D will expect to win ie to receive.

    1. hahaha, that's the irony i was talking about.. anyway, put aside the lottery, i think it's always a good thing to give to charity.. it really feels good and even better when we see people appreciate what we gave.. :)

    2. it's alright to gamble just a small amount, but never get hooked and spend a fortune expecting to get a huge fortune from there.. if it's that easy to strike a lottery, then the lottery company wouldn't want to do business already.. anyway, best of luck and hope you strike the jackpot one day~~ :)

    2. yeah, if go claim the jackpot also very scared.. later got people stalking outside and kidnap us dei.. really, no money takut, got money also takut..

    3. It is very horrible and scary to win too much and live in fear. I think the US way of issuing several part payments are better and safe!

The funny thing is that our media often got to interview them briefly to ask how they got the lucky numbers and what they would do with their winnings. How did they trail them at the gambling office?? Another interesting read was the newspaper once mentioned about a winner of a damn huge sum came to claim his winnings many weeks later citing that he was too busy with business and work matters. I guess that he took so long to avoid the unnecessary attention and spot lights yet the newspaper could even know that he took so long to make claims with busy excuses!!! Scary dei.

I think I will collect cheque and bank in to the nearest bank right away before heading off to KLIA. Why am I talking so much about this as if I will be winning something BIG!!! Tell me!

If I win, I guess I must hire Kaldip to accompany me to collect!! After that give him big ang pow and belanja him to eat his favourite clams by the river's bridge!!

    4. you are so true Anay.. it certainly may not be a good thing if we are winning too much, we are putting our lives and safety (probably also those of our friends and family) at risks.. well you know how safe this bolehland we are residing now is right?? probably because of that, those who have won before have been so low-profile, and yes, i guess they really have to.. if Anay wins, must inform Thambee second to Letchumi, then we can go travel overseas for one year and only come back when the hot news is cooled down~~ :D

  11. You know, there ate those delinquent Muslims who gamble.

Someone told me, JAWI will.wait at these lottery offices to nab Muslims who goes there if they win and collect RM1,000 fine.

    2. When they win they will ask Chinese or Indian friends go collect la.

      Delete
    3. so are Muslims allowed to buy lottery or not?? if win cannot collect themselves but gotta ask non Muslims friends to collect on behalf??

      Delete
    4. Of course they are not allowed to gamble and buy numbers. The 4-D shops are not strict at all on this matter but our casino up in the mountains are damn strict on this matter. I have seen them turn away many Bumi looking patrons who had to produce passports! Even some darker skinned Chinese friends were subject to this matter and became our laughing stocks. Now they prefer to carry special VIP cards issued with photos to prevent these embarrassing checks.

      Delete
    5. i see.. so the 4D shops actually don't care at all as long as they pay for what they are betting.. probably the shops are just touch-n-go unlike the casino where they are staying in there.. hmmm, VIP cards for casino, wow i guess they must have lost a lot to the casino before they are issued this card huh?? free transport, free accommodation and free food - the casino sure don't mind~~ :)

    2. But like you said, painting this on the lottery company building sounds so weird and irony!
Speaking of buying lottery, many people buy but not many wins.
Media always announce the amount of money waiting to win but how many times people can really win it?

      Delete
    3. But there were a few times I did buy 4D, just for the sake of fun la.. Bought a few ringgit cause I dreamed of something really unusual.
Of course, I din't win in the end >.<

    5. actually i have no idea who painted that on the wall.. maybe the lottery company wants to give hope and motivate the people to buy more.. and i think i have not bought lottery for more than 10 times in my life till date.. all the times i bought was just for the sake of fun lah, though will dream of winning jackpot but then really, never win anything before, haha!!

  14. I think the big sign is telling us to donate and give all our $$ to the 4-D companies. They make more than giving out the prizes for sure!!

    1. I always thought they could rig the numbers in the draws but someone told me that the draws are open to the public for viewing every week. Should we all go and watch??

      Delete
    2. Maybe it is to remind the winners to do good deeds by donating the money they won to charity?

When win something must donate out a bit so that more will come in

      Delete
    3. yeah, i also think they paint the words there, intending to give hope and motivate people to "invest" more.. if that's not their work, i am sure they will remove the words right??

oh really?? the draws are open to public?? i thot it's always computerized and closed-door draw..

      Delete
    4. Now that you have discussed this topic, I am very curious indeed. I will go check it out if I can go and witness the weekly draws!

    5. yeah, i remember watching the lottery draw live on TV when i was studying in UK.. and i remember seeing such thing happening in HK TVB series too..

  17. I heard that when one wins top prizes there are people who would swap your ticket and pay you higher amount of $$$ to evade taxes! You know what I am talking...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh really?? that's interesting and sounds like a good deal.. but then what happened if we do not have the ticket?? we would be questioned about where the money comes from right??

      Delete
    2. You are right. Normally if the winnings are too big, people would be worried to accept such deals. Example if you won 10 million and the goons give you 11 million in exchange for your tickets, you might chicken out at the big risks. So I think the popular deals would be 50K in exchange for 55K and so forth. We have heard of such things many times but I have yet to see it as I never won anything so big that has to be claimed from the HQ. I also wonder if there are such things. Let me win very big and come back to tell you okay!!!

      Delete
    3. yeah, everything happens for a reason behind.. so we must always be alert and think of the consequences before taking action.. there is no free lunch, if the goons are offering your RM1-million, there must be something big behind right?? think logically and deeply.. :)

Remember her story about him being conned by a Singaporean tourist who fled with his generous loan but he won the TOTO later on. His kindness was being rewarded in many folds.

How come I helped a friend to settle the loan sharks but I didn't kena big windfall?? It must be Anay's bad karma, I guess!
