How You Spread Jam and Eat Your Bread
How You Spread Jam and Eat Your Bread

still remember a month ago we talked about some trivial topics like how you eat your bread?? fold, flat, one on top another or even a triple-decker.. okay now you know i am going to talk about something even more trivial, hehehe.. i never pay attention to how much butter and jam and whatnot i spread on my bread, until what i witnessed the day we had breakfast in our hotel during my recent Bangkok trip..

one of my friends splatted two blocks of butter and one block of jam (those small convenient packet of butter and jam, you know??) onto one slice of toast and then just eat it as it was!! OMG, i was speechless i was shocked as i was watching him, because i realised i actually only used half butter and quarter jam for my toast.. i personally think a thin spread would do to bring taste to the toast, a thick layer of fats and sugars on top looks rather scary to me.. just like i would only use little to no sauce for my fries, unlike many who would eat plates of (free and bottomless) chili sauce for a packet of fries, like they are eating the sauce with fries (and not the other way round).. maybe as i get older, i started to appreciate lightly flavored food more, for instance i cut down oily and spicy food now.. but i still think it is perfectly fine to happily eat whatEVER we like healthy or junk, but always hold on to the principle that modesty is the key.. too clean and we end up vulnerable, enjoy but don't go over the board, it's all about a modest balance, just like many other things we would do in life.. :)

    1. I've seen "chi mui" playing "heng dai" during wedding day hor, they put the ENTIRE block of butter (dunno what brand, if ciplak brand then die), "kiap" onto 2 slices of white bread, and force those "heng dai" wallop the 2 pieces of bread leh !!

    2. Ok, to be honest, if butter, yes, I can spread one "small box" onto 1 slice of bread.. Maybe 2.. No problem.. But jam, maybe quarter or half like you said.. Butter, I love leh.. But well, like you said, everything in moderation, cannot act like "hungry ghost", hehe..

    3. Ok, that's butter.. If wana talk about kaya, don't worry, I only spread a thin layer.. Same goes with jam or marmalade and mayonaise.. But if peanut butter, wah, I can spread a THICK layer again.. So leh, in summary, I will spread THICK THICK for butter and peanut butter, but for jam and mayonaise and kaya, just a thin layer will do, kekekeke..

    4. And one more, I'm a big fan of condensed milk.. I will spread peanut butter and condensed milk on my bread.. Banjir melimpah one !! I can even eat condensed milk on its own.. Oh dear, guess I must control hor.. You know, after pouring the can into my container, got a lot of leftover inside the can right, I can use finger and korek and lick the whole can clean.. Yummy...

    5. Muahahahaha... I like that line - "Banjir melimpah one !!" I am also like this. HIGH 5!

I know I am greedy and would spread thick butter & strawberry jam on toasted bread to the brim. That would really give you the Oomph! It also tastes heavenly and only experts like us know how to sapu until banjir melimpah one..... wakakakaka

    6. actually me also lah, i will have more butter than jam on my bread or toast lor.. same to peanut butter or even nutella, just evenly a thin layer i won't make the spread like really so 3D lor, haha!! as for condensed milk, errr, no thank you, i don't actually like that leh~~

    7. hahaha...see! your friend is not alone when comes to spreading the whole block of butter onto the roti leh

two block of butter (small lock type) won;t make it into 3D la. Unless your roti is the size of sweet potato bun that is being sold in hyper market la. Those , if put two blocks of butter is too much la.

If roti with milo, i will make it 3D leh Muhahahaha... Eat milo instead of eating roti

    1. Whoaaa!!! What kinda research you need to do before coming back to spam? You always sound scary and mysterious like a Harry Porter's author dei. I wonder what you mean by Roti Panjang? I only know Roti Benggali which was the most popular buns with kaya and butter during the 1950s to 1980s. Now they want to make a come back!

    2. Wah this roti panjang sounds like ada udang di sebalik batu one! Small kucing, run for your life!!

What la Anay ni....so lucky never heard of roti panjang ah... what a lucky childhood you have had.

  3. Wah your friend, I salute lah! Two blocks of butter for a piece of toast is very rich. OK, I confess lah. I also like lots of butter but tak sampai two blocks. For me, one block of butter and one block of jam for one piece. Still seems a lot for you right?

    1. I also must celup my fries with chili sauce. But not excessively though at one time, me, my auntie and my bro almost finished one whole botol of chili sauce at Chilis.

    2. So can be considered I do it lebih-lebih. I must learn to be like you, modestly balanced hee..hee...

    3. But seriously, I want to enjoy my toast with generous butter and better still with kaya. Warm toast with lots of butter and kaya (how to measure the kaya? :D ) sends me to heaven!

      Delete
    4. I also love kaya with butter but I am quite fussy as the butter needs to be imported brand, baru harum manis. The local ones often smell funny and bluek sometimes. The kaya also needs to be homemade by famous Nyonya shops with pandan leaves thrown in if possible as those canned kaya is not fragrant and dark looking like the grease of the motorcars!

      Delete
    5. yalor, i also like butter on my toast, especially excited when i see the butter melting on my toast but never go as far as two blocks of butter lor.. i've tried the most one, but usually just half will do for me.. hehehe!! kaya ah?? measure by how many millimetres you spread?? hahahaha~~

      Delete
    6. wah...anay mouth very sharp dei....butter got to be imported.... Local cheapo butter tak main ya. But nowadays most restaurant and hotels also using cheapo butter. want imported ones have to go overseas lo.,

kaya memang have to have pandan leave thrown in mah. Letchumi tarak make ke, Anay? But to make kaya will have a lot of pantang. cannot simply "talk 24 "(talk nonsense) else the kaya will become lumpy. But my friend discovered a way to make the kaya smooth. She after cooking the kaya, she blend it. Very smooth and strong pandan fragrant. Kalah those Famous Nyonya shop.

Butter melting into the roti...wahhh...heavenly la.Roti must be warm from the toaster. I dun like the butter that is hard and frozen.

  5. I think the old time I also like to have very strong taste, but now the light flavored food more, if ask me to take something heavy all most of the dishes are meat, I will have no appetite to eat, end up I just having the bowl of white rice only without any side dish.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. LOL. You sound like a hospital patient eating a bowl of white rice with no side dishes. At least scoop a bit of marmite or tomato sauce to smear the rice with some flavours.

I still like strong flavoured food like spicy and sour Thai food which I have been eating since I was born. I cannot stand eating some bland tasting food served in China. They mostly like eating plain and mild flavours unless we head to Sichuan Province.

      Delete
    2. haha.. i think this is true lah, as we get older most probably we will prefer things to be just slightly flavored and strong taste ones maybe make us feel uncomfortable.. i definitely cannot take hot & spicy food now..

      Delete
    3. Hahaha, yea, I feel that way too, I'm too scared that I got sick then I couldn't work and need somebody to take care on, so is better to take care of ourselves better so people surrounding won't worry us that much and also we don't have to troublesome others.

  7. when you say block of butter.. how big is it? The butter that we used to have here can be bought in 225g or 112.5g and that is pretty huge block..... maybe you are referring to those little butter packets??? (those usually provided in hotels) I used to apply huge amount too and make sure no space will be missed haha

    1. Of course he is talking about those miniature blocks that are served at buffet tables at the hotels. Who on earth could eat one whole of butter that your mum buys to bake cakes? He would be greasy and face full of volcanic pimples if he swallowed a whole chunk of butter!

      Muahahahaha! Muahahahaha! Wakakakakaka!

    2. those mini size convenient packs of butter served in hotels, usually around 15g each.. wow, if you are imagining those 225g blocks, hahahaha!! that is indeed very unreasonable and makes no sense, don't you think?? hehehe~~

  8. I love having square bread like in your picture. Whenever I went to have buffet breakfast, I would toast one or two slice of bread. I love to apply Kaya, butter, peanut butter and fruit jam. I prefer to have wholemeal bread toasted.

You are right SK, moderation is the key.

    1. Yannie is a very greedy person, if the jam, butter and kaya are provided by the hotel, I will put thicker. If at home, then I put thinner. Heheheheh!

Recently, Yannie is on strict diet, because albeit my exercise regime, I still gains weight, why oh why?

Therefore, Yannie is cutting down carbs intake. I am trying to reduce eating bread, noodles, bread and biscuits. Hopefully, Yannie can put her weight under control.

    2. May be age is catching up, Yannie has weight gained issue even though working out hard everyday. Yannie is sad when seeing the figure is increasing on my bathroom scale.

Talking about eating fries. I love fries very much. I can do without eating burger and taking coke. but I can't resist fries.

I also love dipping fries in chilli sauce . Hehehehe! One pack of McD fries, I need to have two sauce plates of chilli sauce.

      Delete
    3. Yannie is having big appetite if not controlling well. I can eat more than 4 slices of breads at one go.

Bread pudding is my top favourite too.

      Delete
    4. Just sharing information here, if you take one pack of McD fries, you need to run at least 4.5km to burn away the calories. I saw this information in FB, sports circle. This is really killing me.

      Delete
    5. Funny! I thought I am the only weird one who is addicted to fries. Now got a friend-fries in Taiping! Muahahaha
I found out that potatoes have the highest contents to stimulate the happiness glands of human beings. No wonder we eat so much because we wanna be happy!

Weight increases when we exercise too much. I thought it must be due to the fact of fats burned into heavier muscles theory.

I also sapu and sapu a lot of jam & butter at hotels as we are paying for them. At home, we have to limit ourselves otherwise have to replenish again with a hole in our pockets. Sometimes I thought eating hotel buffets are sinful and gain weight but where on earth can eat eat 100 different food at one price?? We cannot even cook that many dishes at home with the same price. So, buffet is cheap sometimes and worth it if you are a big eater. Now my head is thinking of Jogoya!

      Delete
    6. Anay, the McD fries itself make me need to run extra 4.5km, plus dipping in chilli sauce two plates, need to run another 1.5km. So, I better stop eating fries from now one. Once in a blue moon, ok la!

    7. i actually like toasts when i go for breakfast buffet, and get very excited seeing the butter melting on my toast.. but the most also i spread one whole block of butter, usually just half will do.. two is too much for me leh.. mmm, you mentioned fries, i wonder if it would be nice to melt some butter on our fries?? hahaha~~

  9. I spread moderately on my bread. Not wise to use too much butter or jam. As for me, I like to eat my fries with very less chilli sauce. Even I prefer rice without any gravy.

  11. Hahaha, my case is sometimes, we get those block of butter still in cold state, so it is difficult to spread them. If I am too lazy to wait for the butter to melt further, I will do like your friend and just eat the roti with 2 blobs of thick butter.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. eih, actually it's nice to eat bread with cold butter woh.. like that actually won't feel a lot with 2 blocks leh, but melting two on a toast like it's going to banjir like that.. haha!!

  12. When I don't want to eat more than one slice of bread but already open a small case of butter and a small case of jam, then have no choice but to put everything on that one slice of bread and eat. Else who is going to eat the leftover butter and jam since the case cover cannot be glued back to cover the leftovers.

If I spread jam from a big bottle, then I will just put one thin stripe and then roll the bread. No need to spread the whole bread because I roll up the bread.

Modesty as you described sounds good.

    1. yeah yeah.. i bet a person who doesn't put sugar even in her most sour drinks like you, it can't go wrong to expect you to just spread a very thin layer of jam on your bread.. whenever i go for breakfast buffet, usually i'll have four piece of toasts, two blocks of butter and a block of jam to evenly split among them are just nice for me, hehehe~~ :p

    1. yeah, same same here.. wise people think and taste alike too!! hehehehe~~

  17. hahaha... yeah, there are folks who like to eat like that but usually it's the younger ones. At those kopitiams, they will ordered the kaya and butter toasts and usually,a small slice of butter would be sandwiched between the toasts which also has kaya spread over it. They love the slice of butter and even ate it without the toast too.

For me, I will request the butter to be removed while asking for a thin spread of kaya. The aunties knew and nowadays I don't have to keep telling them...muhahahaha.. They are 'educated' by me of my needs as I always patronised the same kopitiam.

Can't help it , better eat healthily and moderately.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anyway, most of the food eaten outside are usually unhealthy as they will add lots of seasoners, salt and like what you mentioned, butter and kaya spread. I just take away a kaya toast from a shop yesterday and there were lots of kaya spread onto it. By right, this is fine as it shows the shop is generous as most people love it. Everybody will love more rice in their chap fan or a bigger portion in their meals.

However, more doesn't mean good and it's our responsibility to ask for lesser salt, lesser kaya, lesser sugar, lesser rice and etc. I guess most health conscious people did that and there are more and more folks who take care of their diet, where it;s also due to their appearance factor. Some just eat lesser to look good than staying healthy...hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  19. Somehow I also spread a lot of kaya onto my toasts and I did it on both sides. However, I dislike butter. I also did that for jam that I like... as it's tastier this way. Yeah la, like what you said, moderate is the key and once a while is allrght la. Else, there will be no life for us if we always keep to a strict regime of diet..hahaha...

I also indulge in steak ,nasi lemak, bak kut teh, char kway teow and so on. There are too many good food around and we have to savour it but do it moderately la.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Haha actually the thicker the jam the tastier it is, to me!

But I am aware of the calories, so I dare not do that, so just a thin layer is enough!

  22. alo...good morning

okay...today baru read whole blog post. hari itu read 1st paragraph only :p

Wah...you friend so terrer ah. Use two blocks of butter and one block of jam in his roti.

Hmm.....I can't blame him la coz i also like that leh. *run and hide*. ...Me more like kiasu la... I know roti if i eat in the hotel buffet the maximum i can eat is one slice only.

if i were to open a block of butter or jam (yes, i use either or..not and) , i "must" use it all up on that slice of roti. Otherwise will be wasted leh. Not good to waste food lo.

Too thick or not ah? Hmm..for me it's okay la coz the roti at the hotel is quite thick also leh.

Moreover...see your above photo on the roti and kaya....i do not spread it like that. I will spread the block of jam or butter till the end of the 4 corners of the roti. I don't like to eat the edges of the roti coz of the taste;. So i spread till the end to hide the taste lor.

As for butter...i think maybe be able to use two blocks of butter because if eat toasted bread, the butter will melt into the bread when it is spread. Very cepat meresap inside...so need two blocks of butter lor.,

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ah....the mentioned of fat and sugar. You really had me going there.

When I was small , my mother used to "force" me to eat planta and roti. Tried to make me bring to school as bekal but failed coz i hated it.

Then one day i sort of go crazy leh....put a lot of planta and then add sugar on top of it. Yup....many will be horrified...what la so unhealthy..sugar and fat. but then manyak sedap leh. Had that nearly every day...till bored with it already. Till now dare not eat liao. When you mention fat and sugar i baru teringat of that.

One more is milo and condensed milk on roti. super unhealthy but sedap. Put a lot till cover the bland taste( yes, i taste roti feel that it's bland taste) of the roti then baru syok

Maybe in the old days nobody is that health concious la. So i get to eat food that has very strong taste lo. lotsa salt lotsa sugar

    ReplyDelete
  24. Now older liao..guess have to eat more healthy stuff and more healthy method la. Cannot simply stuff myself with sugar and salt.

I do agree with you there . everything moderate can la. Too dirty also cannot and too clean also no good. SOmehow we need some dirty germs to keep us healthy like. Just like we go for all those jabs ...the jab us with all those mild virus so that our body can build up antibodies against it.

Like my ex boss said...big germs eat small germs. Won;t die one...only lausai Wakakakaka
