Related Or Not
i mentioned about getting used to my new machine in the previous post and i find it amusing that some readers think i can do ANYTHING with computers, hahahaha!! well, i guess this is an over-compliment that i dare not accept, really.. i may be working in the IT industry, but this industry is so huge with so many domains, i absolutely would not know everything about computers.. and that is what i often experience, people around will just come to me when they hit any computer-related problems big or small.. frankly, i know nothing on network and hardware, and even software i just know a little tip of iceberg of it, *paiseh*.. to generalize this, it's like you are a specialist in cardiology and when people around know you are a "doctor", they will come to you for advices on how to recover from flu, what's the best medication for their sickness, what to do when they experience premature ejaculation!! and when you politely apologize saying "that's not really my forte", they bluntly say "huh?? doctor also dunno ah??".. yes, we are what our profession but not GOD who knows all things.. without prejudice and pinpointing, i guess we sometimes have to set our expectations right and not make assumptions, or at least understand that there is none who can do everything in this world.. agree?? :)

    1. Oohh, so today’s about Jack of all trades? Yeah, I know what you mean.. Let me story you.. When I was in college, ahem, I was “perceived” as the top student.. Becoz all lecturers seem to favourite me, and gave me almost-full marks in my papers.. So other students “perceived” me as top student, who knows everything (in every subjects).. I hated it.. That made me so stress.. So when I got C+ for my Accounting paper, people said “Hah, you will get C+ one meh, thought you always get A- and above in every subject everytime”.. OMG, sau pei lah, really hated that comment leh.. I always tell people I’m not good in certain subjects, and I’m not a top student, but they answered “No meh, you always get high marks wor”.. Duh, I get high marks for certain subjects only ok, not all of them..

    6. yeah.. i think sometimes if we are too high profile, we easily attracts jealousy and sometimes discrimination from some people.. but then just don't have to feel bad because of people bad-mouth us, we "walk upright and stand upright" and we have no fear or whatsoever about their gossips.. just continue to be yourself, and just like what you always say "my xxxx my sukak" mah.. agree?? :)

  4. Very true! A doctor who is a general practitioner will know a little bit of everything while the specialist who specialises in his field of expertise would know lots (but still not all!) on his area of of specialization. The rest of us tend to think that since they are doctors, they will sure know everything under the sun about our medical condition.

    1. yeah and those people really expected too much because they know nothing at all.. those who know something will be more understanding :)

  5. So with this interesting topic, we come to realise that every profession has their areas of specialisation. Just like chefs. There are many areas to specialise. In baking there's breads, pastries, cakes, sugar decorations etc. Ask a pastry chef to cook nasi lemak, don't be disappointed if he can't.

  6. SK, the thing is, to us mere mortals here (heh..heh...) your knowledge on computers and IT related topics far exceed ours. So naturally we tend to look at you as if you are THE IT guy. Those interactive stuffs you put up in your blog really impress the pants off most of your readers.

Guess we just have to get used to it!

  13. Same analogy of a car mechanics or so called 'foreman' as many would think they can do wonders. Can repair gearbox, fixed air con, repair radiator, repair alternators or electrical wiring, etc, etc etc. Actually they just farm out the repairs to the experts.

    Replies
    1. yeah.. that is somehow a very common perspective of people huh?? i would also think my foreman will know how to repair all parts of the car~~ :D

  14. Haha, lucky I am not the one who said you can do anything with computers! :p I just express my enviousness on you getting a new laptop only...
Speaking about this, we also got a new IT-related gadget in our room last week, it's the router modem. The old one (belkin) was working fine all these years but last 2 weeks, it got hit by lightning!! Arghhh I never know I would be that 'suffering' without wifi leh! Actually not just me but my hubby, sister in law and Aden (he watches Youtube on iPad xD) too! I got data in my phone but quota not much, so use also must be very 'stingy', plus line not good ma! But with wifi, things go smooth!
    Mana tahu, lightning 'killed' it!!
So end up we got to buy a new router modem lo.. So far it din't perform as good as the old ones but erm, what to do? Since already buy so just have to stick with it.

    1. Ok back to your topic, hmm yala I agree also, it's the 'general mindset' everyone have. Like your instance, we tend to ask a doctor all sorts of health-related questions cause we assume they sure know one, but actually doctor also got many types la! :p
So if that doctor cannot answer our question, we cannot blame them also, must be reasonable la!

I also encounter something similar before. I studied Software Engineering as degree but have little knowledge about hardware. There was once my CPU got problem and I couldn't fix it and needed my dad to bring it to the computer shop to repair, then my dad said 'you studied computer one ma you fix yourself la! Save money ma!'. I was like, I studied programming la not hardware la! So I totally understand what you are trying to say here SK ;)

    2. But but cannot deny that there are people who knows EVERYTHING about something, either they are naturally that talented or they spend time and effort study and 研究 on something. Really salute those people, macam genius already!

      Delete
    3. actually come to think about it.. i guess it's because those people know nothing about the problem, so they thought it's a very simple thing that the person they expect would be able to know everything.. on the other hand, for people who knows a little about the thing, they would be more understanding, that the person they are looking for help may not be able to guarantee a solution.. hmmm, so whenever we hit the first kind of scenario, guess we just have to make ourselves think so already.. :)

      Delete
  15. At least you know more about IT stuff than us. But of course IT knowledge needs updating so we can't expect you to know every single thing. However, you definitely can find the way to fix some problems related to IT.

    1. oh, you are into project management in the IT line?? hey, then we are of the similar background leh.. give me five!!

  18. Most of the times, I will give them generic answers. For example, if you want a good and reliable phones , go for IOS aka apple phones and stop buying cheap android phones. Hahah.... that applies to Pc. Even networking devices, the cheapest ones aren't the better ones.

    1. but what you say is very true lah.. when we know we will give detailed advice, when we have just a slight idea, we can only give very generic advices.. agree??

  19. Sometimes, I do some research for them. The good thing about IT folks like us are we check stuffs out first including the price at forums and sites before buying. I am sure you agreed and did that too. That's the least I can do to help them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes, hands up and high five!! i think in our line, we are trained to actually researched for the solutions before we go about and ask around huh?? unlike people, probably from the sales and marketing side, once they need something, they right away will shout for all people in the office to help.. :D

  21. Poor SK, you have to explain your predicament here. It's okay, life's like that, when you're an expert in something people will expect more - just like when you have ideas or more vocal in a meeting, people will appoint you to head the project, sometimes not a bad thing, but that wasn't the original intent.

Yeah, there's a lot of potential for people who know coding and stuff. I was watching CNN the other night and they were showing a segment on people who had successful startups and they were talking about Twitter and the founders, Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone. Of course, these people were already successful elsewhere before that such as in Google and Blogger, etc.. Anyway, to cut a long story short, there's a lot of potential out there in the IT world.

Ah, I see Conan O'brien up there with you. Enjoyed his Tonight Show.

    1. hahaha, it's not actually a very bothering thing but i just find it rather amusing that people would think i know everything.. of course, if i can help, i'd do my best to help.. and in your case, i guess better stay low profile to avoid any unnecessary thing to happen huh?? hahahaha..

  22. Steady, SK. You sound like me now, because I said the same thing to my boss. My boss asked me to do this system, that system. From Finance to Production, from Production to HR system. Yannie wants to go pengsan. Anyway, even if it is software application, one cannot know all too.

I remember I talked to my boss, I said if your brain got tumor, when you can't find the brain surgeon, will you let the heart surgeon to open your brain? I continued and said, you may go to coma or you may wake up, but you will forget your wife's name forever. He got stunned.
